Without alcohol this was normal fare since these establishments are for social diners with small appetites (not these two). Guaranteed they hit McDonalds an hour later.
Nobody who knows what the cooking style is about for sure. I think the first time I had fresh sushi, I was more concerned wih the druy Bonito fish flakes come to life on top of my hot shrimp skewers moving around! It never fails to amaze me how people start becoming squeamish after wanting to experience what they know is coming so bad afterwards
better than being served 6 months old Fish corpse with flies laying egg in it and flying around this is more common than you think, because in the kitchen people can't tell the difference that's why seafood restaurants often have fish tank and fish in it, because you're guaranteed to be served a fresh fish, and not a 5 Months fish corpse it's more of culture thing. if you live in a country where serving Rotten meat is a common occurence, you'll value a fresh fish too
@@jensenraylight8011 I live in a country that loves to show off, big money characteristics to impress, at as cheap the cost as they can make it, but still look expensive. You can go to a very GOOD restaurant down here in Canada...totally top notch, and still when you order a live lobster out of a tank, it could be very, VERY OLD, and in the tank with lobsters that were already dead a day! Most of the fresh lol seafood down here in Toronto, smell like ammonia and throw up! FRESH MEANS *YOU GO TO ST.LAWRENCE FISH MARKET, AND BUY LIVE SEAFOODS TO COOK AT HOME YOURSELF. Something I am good at and love, but don't always have the time to do.
Like what? like Lion eating Deer while it was still Alive? Like wolf Hunt down Elk and eating it while it was still alive? Cat eat Mouse while it still alive? Basically almost all Animal on earth eat their prey while it was still alive and moving. oh, now you want all Animal on earth to Kill their prey as humanely as possible? Being Eaten alive is way worse than being Steamed in a minute, basically almost instant death, which is more humane than how most animal hunt and eat their prey just because you're not the one dirtying your hand, doesn't mean you've a moral high ground. Just appreciate your food and enjoy it, by doing it, you're respecting the animal, and gratitude toward your food and the chef who prepare it for you
@@jensenraylight8011 "oh, now you want all Animal on earth to Kill their prey as humanely as possible?" > That's a quite ridiculous and completely made up interpretation of that silly comment. Congratulations. "Being Eaten alive is way worse than being Steamed in a minute" > Steamed alive is way worse than getting dispatched properly - in this case by being dumped in icewater, which doesn't cause any pain. Your logic doesn't make any sense. By our logic, assisted suicide by stabbing someone in the stomache with a dull knife would be completely fine, because that's better than being eaten alive by bedbugs. "Just appreciate your food and enjoy it, by doing it, you're respecting the animal, and gratitude toward your food and the chef who prepare it for you" > That's BS. How is it respectful to torture an animal, when there is a proper way to dispatch it?
@@CD-kg9by did you even read your own comment? Because neither of your argument was strong enough to damage my argument at all, it was like written by 5yo Which makes me really confused about what to reply You're trying to fight against my argument for the sake of fighting alone, justification everywhere, and clearly didn't think things thoroughly This is my first time reading an argument written so badly
I felt bad for the poor little abalone, but would definitely try the rest of the meal. It was so artfully done and very relaxing to watch. For me, this experience would absolutely be worth the price.👍🏾
I'm sure if the only thing left on the planet was us and the abalone, you'd eat them raw. I'm CAF Ret. Para-ambu medic here..and I've had to eat quite a few raw live wriggling creatures in training and otherwise.
@@canadiancaribou855 Yes of course, but why watch the videos of live fresh seafood being cooked so traditionally if it bothers you...I get it, I'm just saying.
@@angelarigido7161 because I can watch whatever I choose and feel how I choose 🤷🏾♀️ If that's how it is prepared, then so be it. I'm a country girl that grew up around farm animals and hunting, and have seen many live animals dispatched for food purposes. As long as an animal's life isn't wasted, I'm all good over here.
I watch DB videos to relax before bed. Really didnt expect to watch a living creature literally get scalded to death. Omg that poor abalone. I can't finish this video.
Thank you for posting this I read comments before watching, couldn't handle that in my head. I am a vegetarian but I will ear some meat rarely, too many animals killed inhumanely for me. Thank you
As a Westerner who knows where his food comes from, I confess I'd feel a bit weird watching that abalone being cooked to death, but I'd still eat it. I'd not be able to afford this any time soon, but it looks to be an exceptional high end dining experience! Thank you for sharing it with us all, Bacons!
It's really not that hard to kill your food before cooking it. I know some stuff like lobsters get bad very quickly after they die, but you still don't have to cook them alive.
Yeah the moving right before it dies is definitely weird. But we've also watched him hook a live fish right before eating it. It's just the way they do it over there
Watching this abalone get literally cooked to death made me uncomfortable. What was the culinary benefit in cooking it alive compared to killing it first? To ooh and ahh over how fresh it is? Mollusks might have very different “nervous systems” compared to mammals, but they exhibit stress responses and it’s thought that they could possibly feel pain as some have a form of nervous system and nociceptors. Eat the abalone if you want, but cooking it alive? That was needlessly cruel.
That's the part that bothered you? I was bothered by the fact they salted it and let it writhe in pain *before* they cooked it. At least the cooking process would had been faster (but not much better). Just putting salt on it and letting it suffer because it's amusing to watch for some people? That's literally a child with a salt shaker finding a slug or snail, or finding a magnifying glass to burn ants with. Whoever finds this amusing or pleasurable? They're that kid. They're the kids that enjoy torture p*rn.
Glia cells are pain receptors on non-nervous system organisms. It's why they writhe in pain when cut in half, or when thrown on a grill. Pain is literally the #1 trigger for all survival mechanisms for life on earth. Even unicellular organisms react to painful stimuli. Our ignorance on many things is staggering, but the refusal of people to acknowledge pain responses as actual pain is beyond stupid.
You haven't seen the Japanese cooking of putting a small eel into a pot. In the pot is a brick of tofu. As the water heats up, the animal swimming frantically trying to escape the liquid hell, finally burrowing inside the tofu to escape the heat. It is finally boiled to death and cooked in the tofu. Awful way to kill an animal, as if the suffering adds to the delicacy.
It was a bit disappointing that they didn’t use the wagyu beef fat to cook the vegetables, garlic and rice like many of the other restaurants you have been to. It all looks delicious though!
I believe that was probably intentional. Cooking it all in the wagyu fat would definitely be delicious, but they probably wanted distinct and purposeful flavors instead of vegetables that taste kinda like wagyu and rice that also tastes kinda like wagyu.
I don't like seafood but even if i did i wouldn't be able to eat the abalone knowing that a few moments prior it was alive and wiggling around... It's just too creepy
Same, for me it’s so strange that people go to those sea markets with lots of aquarium and chooses the food alive then go to a restaurant and eats it like it wasn’t alive 5 minutes ago
Watching that Abalone sliding around the shell almost as if it was confused or something was weird,. I don't see seafood or anything being prepped live as I am way too far away from the coast to really get fresh fish/other seafood
@@madamerosario to add to your perfectly valid point, Japan is huge on freshness as well. Showing you your food is alive before cooking it (mostly just with seafood) is the highest form of hospitality. It's basically a way of them saying, only the best for our guest/customer.
I love how literally EVERYONE on the euro-asian continents just look at whatever they find crawling out of the ocean and immediately think "I'm gonna eat that".
Wow this Chef is so skilled! I love how he adds the fat (flavor) back to the meet. Cut it into smaller peaces so you can enjoy different combinations of seasoning and garnish. Then splits everything into 2 perfect portions. Impressive attention to details.
Brinjal is, for those who are unfamiliar (as I was!), just another name for eggplant or aubergine. The chef there put on the best sort of show -- no theatrics, just a masterful dance of implements to serve up a delicious meal!
You sprinkle the seasonings from higher up for a more even coating. The difference between this chef and salt bae is this chef isn't sprinkling on his nasty arm first like that idiot does.
I remember one video where another Teppanyaki chef just set the live abalone down on the grill, body side down. The abalone immediately began writhing in pain so much before it just stopped moving completely. In this situation, the abalone is at least covered before being steamed, so it's not as devastating to watch while the chef works on the other ingredients.
There's a How's it made, factory,.... genre RU-vidr. I unsubscribed when a chef gutted a Pufferfish. Things was moving for minutes after. The comments from the Pro Chef comments, "It's nothing but nerve endings!!!!. You eat meat? What's the problem?" Well, I prefer animals to be dispatched as soon as possible.
@@dlewis9760 almost every religion believes in killing animals in a humane way. Some people do not care. Only because I respect nice lady’s channel I will not speak my mind.
I had to stop watching when I saw the abalone moving around, I felt really sorry for it. It may be a cultural issue, but I can't deal with the food I'm about to eat moving around in front of me before its cooked, even worse seeing it cooked alive like that, I think it's really cruel.
I do realize that Abalone don't have a central nervous system which means they cannot feel pain or experience emotions related to it, but it just still feels so wrong to cook things while they are alive. they do still react to stimuli as you can see in the video they react heavily to the salt being put on it. I just don't get why people are ok with live cooking like this. It takes mere seconds to kill it and can be done seconds before cooking it and it's going to taste the exact same.
I had to stop watching, I'd like to watch the chef work but cooking a creature alive for one's one enjoyment is needlessly cruel (and I couldn't care less about if it can feel pain or not, it's still horrible.) I strongly feel as creatures with advanced intelligence that dominate the food chain, the least we can do is respect the creatures we eat for the sake of it, not for survival. It might be something baked into Japanese culture but that doesn't make it right. D:
@@ArtzyZeroI agree. We used to go hunting with my grandpa for deer, and he was so good at doing it! But he’d always make sure it was a quick death and then taught us to thank the deer and respect our food.
It's a flex how tough the chef and eaters are. "I'm better than you, because you are weak". Tempted to drop these 2 because of that. They actually gloat that it was alive.
I love to watch these masters cook. Everything looked so tasty. Too expensive for my budget, though. Thank you for taking me with you on your journeys. I love your channel. Happy new year. May 2024 be filled with good health, happiness and prosperity.
Having lived in Japan the price for such high quality plus the presentation is worth the money. This is an experience you can’t get elsewhere. Even in a big city like NY, it not like eating in Tokyo.
Thank you for sharing this upscale experience, with a professional chef's kiss. As well, thank you for all the information and Mrs. Bacon's enthusiastic gestures of enjoyment and approval! Happy New Year 🎊 Wishing you to continue flourishing and prospering 🙏
The happy noises your wife makes when she tastes good food is so wholesome. I've had teppanyaki once at Nobu here in Melbourne, Australia and my highlights were the chicken tofu & mushroom soup. It was so simple, but delicious and I found myself craving more of it when I left lol. And the garlic fried rice is a MUST even if it costs extra, it's just SO worth it
Love this chef. Lots of things to admire but one that stuck out to me was his stylish salting technique. It's like Salt Bae but with genuine talent, and I think you actually get what you're paying for with this.

Yay! First. 😊😆 I’ve never felt bad for a shellfish before, but that poor abalone moving around the way it was…it was almost as if it was looking at everything and wondering what was going on. 😢 I think I’ll stick to seeing my food after it’s been dispatched from life. ✌🏻😊
I love how every one is feeling bad for the abalone cuz it was still alive, but as far as i know they dont really feel pain if ya poke em with a stick they will retract due to reflex but no pain
Abalone is an endangered species? Oh, I had to look that up. It looks like a lot of them are, but not all of them. I wonder which one they're eating here? I have no idea. But yeah, dude.. don't salt it and let it suffer because weeee it's fun and cool to look at! :D :D :D That's gross. :/ Humans are gross.
First up, i found watching this part confronting but understand people would enjoy not just the flavour, but the show as well. Who am i to judge. One thought though: I hope they use Australian abalone. The industry is very highly regulated here and heavy penalties apply for poaching or over fishing. The cost of the licence to farm abalone is astronomical - I know a guy who has the licence for the Warrnambool area in Victoria and he is beyond wealthy.
Thank you, once again for sharing an experience I will sadly never have. Her expression would be mine! Please keep having fun, tasting the best, and sharing. Love what you do.
When I was a kid in NZ we used to go and pick abalone off the rocks in the beach we called them paua, they were often a bit tough (so we probably did not cook them right) but with a good flavour. They are (or were) common when I was a kid
Another great food video. Anything wagyu is delicious! Thank you! Wagyu meat is pinker and much more delicate, resulting in a more flavorful, soft cut of meat. It can cook for extended periods without becoming leathery or dried up. Wagyu beef also has fat that is better and healthier than other types of meat I just posted a "Best Pancakes in Hawaii" about the delicious Chantilly Pancakes in Hawaii We should battle! (You'll probably win though) Happy New Year Dancing Baconators!
I’m not eating anything that gets burned alive right before my eyes just so it’s fresh. For what you paid for this extravagance, I’d rather have a giant salad with some quinoa and avocado.
I have eaten at tenpayakki restaurant before, I was unsure about the portion at first because it looks small. But surprisingly the whole meal make full 😂 and I shall not underestimate the smol portion next time
Sadly, abalone is almost an endangered species on the coast of California, and some abalone species are extinct because of poaching wonder where they got this one
How do you know it's in pain? Do you also imagine a carrot being in pain after taking a bite of it? The mollusk with no brain suffers as long as you imagine it to suffer. There is no way to prove it. Not yet at least.
@@Danne89 “There is no way to disprove that there are invisible elephants walking around therefore it can be true and must be taken into consideration" This is your logic. The ones who are implying it's in pain are you and op. So it's your job, not mine, to prove or disprove it. But it's simply a fact that simple organisms (compared to humans) don't have a nervous system advanced enough to feel pain. Why? Because they don't need it. If an organism is covered with a shell and doesn't have to move much, then there is no need for it to feel pain as we do. This thing doesn't even have a brain to which it can send pain signals to. Applying human emotions and feelings to it is stupid. But if you think this is unnecessary and is displeasing, I agree. This is a stupid custom in fancy restaurants to show how fresh their food is. That is a better argument against this than saying it's in pain.
