a great literary critic in my own country said he can read anything in translation but not Russian literature. you need to read the original, and the same thing a Russian close friend told me years ago, I still regret not marrying her

Astounding!!! In all the shitty things ive done in my life, and will yet to do, ive recently taken to kissing the ground and asking for forgiveness. Its the only sane thing i feel in my heart to do, and i owe it to Raskalnakov...

He says the idea of suffering to purify soul may be understood only by russian people? Is it a christian thing common in Catholics as well? I have heard it from Mother Theresa as well.
@boyanpetrov5007
@boyanpetrov5007 7 лет назад
Well while I completely understand why he said it, would be difficult to explain it in short. And he says "Russian", but I think it is a concept common to the Slavic culture and psychology, not just Russian. It is question not only about religion but perception of the world. Slavic culture is "introvert" and that why the perception of pain and suffering is inseperable part of the existance par excellence. Latin, Roman or Western culture is more of "extrovert" and suffering and pain in general is something outside of its modus vivendi, someting that is always temporary.

@@boyanpetrov5007 Your interpretation/explanation makes sense & is insightful - I do tend to agree with you. (I also lean towards the "introvert" ways as you describe, regarding introspection/suffering ... in varying degrees)

You should know that the Catholic church has a different relationship with suffering than the Orthodox church has. For the Orthodox church, which through its continual suffering has been forced into obscurity from the world there is a general story of this feeling. Its history is littered with stories of "happiness in sorrow." If you have read Dosteovsky you might get a sense of what he thinks about the difference between Catholocism and Orthodoxy. Thus, the idea of Russian suffering which Dosteovsky talks about is the suffering which only those that have truly suffered can know. The Russians have suffered through much of their history, the people have known more periods of suffering than they have know of victory, something which cannot be said of Catholic Rome, or the Vatican.
