Thanks Kyle, I love the audience I have. As long as those watching are enjoying and benefitting from my videos, that's good for me. I'm not trying to be the next Pewdiepie :)
I have owned the D2 Delta PX for nearly a year now and I agree with Stefan. It’s a really cool watch. But it would have been much smarter of me to spend the money on flight training. It’s good to track the accuracy of circuits etc. I don’t regret spending the money but you absolutely don’t need this it’s just a cool toy. Keep up the awesome content mate!
Thanks for sharing that James, interesting to hear another perspective from someone who bought one. Hope your training is going well mate, and thanks for the positive feedback.
I have a son who has a plane, well 2 of them really, so this would be a great gift. May not do the 1800 but now I know something maybe he doesn't know ;)
Stefan Drury, thanks for the reply. Training is on hold for now but I am fortunate enough to work in the aviation industry as aircrew so that satisfies the bug. If you are ever in Perth or want to have a look at some interesting aircraft feel free to contact me.
I bought some years ago the D2 Charlie because I am a private pilot. Nice to have it but frankly speaking, I have never, never used it during a flight... Plane instruments coupled to a iPad for any flight informations are quite more relevant and reliable. The good point is the autonomy of the battery which can reach more than 2 weeks before charging. Just to say that I will replace it by a Samsung Gear x more useful and easier to use for a day to day life.
Thanks for the review . I appreciate the fact that you took the time to explain that "it depends on what sort of pilot you are" !! Keep up the good work
Great review Stefan! Definitely up there in the 'nice, but don't need!' I've had a love/hate relationship with Garmin running watches over the years. The joys of waiting for a 'sync' to complete before a race was always frustrating! Take care mate!
I love my Forerunner 935 for running, best smartwatch I've ever owned to be honest. The battery life is crazy good and the tracking I find is really accurate. Yeah there can be a delay whilst it finds a GPS signal I get that too, but often (if you have clear view of the sky) it's often not too long. Thanks for watching Benjamin.
You said since it wasn't a sponsored review you were going to be very frank and very honest. So, if it WAS sponsored, you wouldn't give an honest review??
Hi Stefan , when I hear an aircraft coming over wherever I am , I always look at flight radar 24 and you can see what aircraft it is at what speed etc...etc.... On this Sunday November the 10th there was a cirrus sr22 flying over where I live , Doreen and landed at Yarrawonga aero drome at a calibrated altitude of 6850 ft and a speed of approximate 185 knots . I just wonder if it was you ?
I have the Garmin D2C Titanium, been amazing for military, fixed wing, and float plane flying. The watch is going on three years now and it’s made it through two deployments. Unfortunately the titanium band didn’t make it more than a year and I had to buy another band due to manufacture defect, $200 USD (Garmin wouldn’t cover that). A fellow pilot bought the D2D and I literally wouldn’t pay an $500 USD to get three additional features: Pulse Ox, Garmin pay, and 500 song capacity. I wear this watch for work, working out, and flying. If you want a cute lil watch to listen to music, digital pay, text, phone calls, and other life’s conveniences don’t get this watch. Go with another company or dare I say get an Apple Watch. The D2D isn’t justifiable since they didn’t upgrade the screen or any of the features you actually utilize during flying. Save yourself money and get the D2C or wait till the D2E comes out with hopefully some upgraded features for flying. Ultimately don’t spend the money for the D2D instead put your money towards flight training, aircraft avionics upgrades, or save up for a plane. If someone gave me the watch or if you can acquire it like Stefan did then go for it.
Absolute humorous and informative entertainment....... Thanks Stefan! Really well done. The fact that the D2 has an Analogue face makes it very appealing to me. The integration with the Nav suite is fantastic and the Garmin App is....sweet. I would gift it to my very ill brother, so as to get him flying again. I imagine it could be of the greatest value if one was to loose your GX-650 in the air; another means of redundancy. God bless stay safe..
Yes, this watch is technologically amazing, but it is just a fitness watch with flying functions bodged on. The start/stop for flying "activity" drives me up the wall. It isn't designed for pilots. I'm an airline pilot and software developer so I just wrote my own apps for my watch. In a few hours I could write way more useful and reliable applications.
I don't think it can pick up GPS signal inside a commercial airplane... I use my phone to track the plane location but have to hold it really close to a window
I have the Garmin MARQ Aviator pro. I was able to track my entire flight from inside a commercial plane. It will also not work if you are not against a window.
I'm wondering if this would be a useful product for GA aircraft and pilots that don't have a cockpit full of modern avionics. I'm thinking of those that fly historic aircraft, experimental aircraft, PPG pilots that do cross country and similar. Something compact on your wrist would be far more manageable than a tablet on your knee board, especially for PPG use. Something that you can set up (presumably) a warning on the pulse oximeter to let you know if you are approaching your limits would be great. Having some basic navigation capability would also help to keep an eye on fuel when you meet an unexpectedly strong head wind, and a way to double check heading and ground speed in cases where you don't have the instrumentation or something unexpected happens.
I upgrade to the D2 Delta PX from the D2 Charlie. It’s a great watch, the titanium band it a bit average, the first locking mechanism broke after the first month. Garmin wants the whole watch back not just the user replaceable band. Not great given the watch band is worth over $320 so its not great.
Any good use of fat numbers around screen ? Looking more disruptive for me :( . My daughter brought Fenix 6 about week ago - LOVE it - huge display , but it is not "avionic" :(
It's an attachment for the oxygen boom when I'm flying higher altitudes. It attaches to the headset so I can easily clip the oxygen boom in and out. Video on it here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bwSxlnRDnMs.html
Hi! Can it be used totally independent, without any connection to iPad or Phone, to be used as a backup EFB? Or in parallel to another EFM like OZRwy, but no Garmin apps? Does it require a Garmin Pilot or equivalent subscription with Garmin to be used, download maps, etc?
what limitations does it have if any should you not have any other garmin products in the cockpit? it says it syncs to other displays, but if all i have is my phone or ipad how limited is the functionality of the watch?
If Garmin doesn't start sponsoring you and the Channel, well, they are missing out "Big Time". I would purchase the D2 Delta based on YOUR APPRAISAL ALONE..... cheers
I have been using the D2 watches for almost four years. I agree that it is worth the price. But there is nothing else like this to compare with. For student pilots, no, spend money on flight lessons.
Think of it as 3 watches. A $5000 Omega X-33 can't do what a D2 can. The Omega is more readable, cockpit friendly, and higher quality. Fitness Land Navigation Flying
Yes, almost. I was able to load the airport database to my 935. However, I found that Garmin limits the flight tracking abilities. For example, Garmin Connect will not properly speeds greater than 141 mph on the track.
I admire Garmin watches except for the one that has barometer as the barometer get stuffed and stop working after a short time (average 2-3 months) and I had to claim 9 or 10 watches on warranty and get them replaced until I fed up with that process and decided to get a refund.
@NonyaBusiness! What people spend on a watch is NonyaBusiness. All I said was it's not expensive in comparison to luxury flight watches. To some people an Apple watch is too expensive. It's all relative. To each his own.
@NonyaBusiness! . Again I never told you what to spend your money on. If you can't afford it or you want to spend your money on something else then do that. I just stated that it's not as expensive as other watches. You're the one telling people what they could be doing with their money. I paid $1000 used in new condition. Money well spent. I like it and I use it every day.
Seriously, why would a pilot need such a watch. You have all the instruments you need in the cockpit. if you want a real stylish pilots watch, have a look at the fliger watchs from Sinn, Laco etc, or if you like to be blingy, a Rolex AirKing!
You dont really play with it ever; having owned it for almost a year. Its nice for, stopwatch, direct to(playing), metars and tafs, Zulu time. Thats what I use it for.
A very expensive toy...but full of high tech etc. Stef what would happen if I put my Navman car GPS unit on the windscreen of EYZ ? I presume it could give me some form of guidance and given I can enter GPS co ordinates into it it may be of some use ? I know I am good at silly questions !! Another great video and well done as always !!
The D2 Charlie is a Fenix 5X (non-Plus) with a different firmware. The D2 Delta series (there are 3 different models) are Fenix 5 Plus models with a different firmware. The 6X Pro doesn't have a D2 equivalent (yet?). If Garmin releases an update, it probably will be the D2 Echo series. Or Foxtrot if the MARQ Aviator counts as a D2.
Nice vid. Too fidly of a watch for me tbh, and that reflection is pretty bad too. (perhaps the video makes it worse? ) If i may add some constructive critisism Stefan, your music is pretty high volume compared to the rest of the sound (goes for all videos ;) ).
I enjoy see my flights on FlightRADAR24 and recording the info for posterity & learning. However, not every aircraft at my school has ADSB-Out. That is where something like this would be very helpful. Oh, and the Golf Course maps too!
Garmin needs to speed up these things, i dont see a bright future otherwise, meantime other smart watches are way ahead… thanks for the video, you try the best to sell it…
@@Nano606606 If you have the non-Plus 5X, you can turn that into a D2 Charlie. If you have any 5 Plus model, you can change the firmware to that of a D2 Delta.
That is very clunky having to download an iPhone app, onto the iPad (looks terrible on a big screen) to then use another app, with a 2k watch 😂 All the toys are a bit like the sports mode on cars, use it on day one, will never use it again. I’ll stick to my F-91W Casio and stick a 65 inch OLED TV on the wall thanks ✌️ Bit like Breitlings, marketed at spotters, never used by actual pilots 🤷♂️
