In times of hardship, it’s not an unnecessary exercise to fortify our minds with philosophical ideas, so we don’t slip into the trap of panic. Roman emperor and Stoic philosopher Marcus Aurelius had some valuable insights on how to do this.

This video appeared in my feed at the perfect time. I was on my way down a pretty severe depressive spiral after reading the comments section on a very biased article about the pandemic. There was no discourse there; only verbal abuse and hate. I kept clicking, and clicking, searching for some glimmer of hope; just one thread of genuine conversation, and by the time I realized I was looking for a needle in a very fat haystack (or a specific needle in a haystack sized pile of needles) the damage had already been done. My anxiety levels were through the roof, and then I found this. Even the comments section is so civil. People are talking and sharing wisdom. It’s so easy to lose perspective and get trapped in hopelessness. Thank you for doing what you do!

One of the ways of not allowing yourself to be influenced by what everyone is saying and what mass media is propagating is understanding that staying at home is not a good idea. That will only reduce the damage, instead of solving the problem.
@angelcdeath

It's called damage mitigation. Lessening the effects of (something)s impact by having less vulnerabilities. When someone goes to punch you in the gut you're going to want to avoid it or tense your stomach muscles to lessen the damage. Until they know how to protect us from this "punch" it's better to just avoid it all together.

The mind is very good at playing the trickster when it comes to grey areas in life. I quote from Osho, "The Mind: a beautiful servant, a dangerous master." Rationality is key to allowing the mind to sort itself out in times of panic. When we make decisions that lack rationality, it is easy to slip into making a decision out of fear. If we can present the reality of the situation rationally then the mind ceases to tell us stories that are not grounded in reality. Rationality will be the first step towards fortifying the mind to live in the here and now, not caring about what anyone thinks or says about you.

My only criticism is this': Logic is often used to say that emotional reactions are illogic.. Emotional behaviour has its own logic to follow it's supposed to be used for short range solutions where Thinking or rationalizarion is useless Like a parralel to reflex of the spine e.g it doesn't make sense to think about holding unto a hot plate burning in your hands I rarely see anyone break down emotion most people just dismiss it completely

There is not logic to emotions, but there is a reason for them. Look, if you want to know to know the real difference between logic and emotion, I'll tell you. The key is to understand why we have emotion and how we use logic. Emotions are simply an evolutionary adaptation to help us survive and reproduce. Emotions=survival. Every emotion you have, is in some way suppose to directly or indirectly help you survive and reproduce. The key thing to understand is what emotions are not. Emotions are *not* a way to help you understand the world, just to survive in it. If the purpose of emotion is to help us survive, than logic is what helps us understand the world. Now, as far I know, humans are really the only animal even capable of using logic. Look, the problem with both emotion and instincts is that we live in a modern human world and not the jungle anymore. It takes who knows how many thousands of years for emotions to evolve. There are numerous examples where our emotions and instincts have failed us. Obesity, addiction to porn and bad government policies just to name a few. We have a strong desire to eat lots of fat, sugar and salt, but those instincts can make us fat due to this modern world. Look, having said that, emotions are important, of course, but they have their proper place and time. My advice is this, the more trivial something is, the more you should use emotion. The more important and critical something is, the more we should use logic.

We were beasts before we were men. Logic is great for a day to day stoic life but how many times have we all ignored our instincts and regretted it? Our instincts and emotions are just as necessary or they would have been bred out of us as we evolve. Emotion is the driving force for great change, good or bad; the changes of emotion is as necessary as the solidity of logic. All is valid or it would have been discarded

Thats because the majority of emotions are flawed. If you have to apply language to 'think' about how you 'feel' , then it is to be dismissed as nonsense.

@@youtubeuser7798 lol if you think emotions are flawed your already on the wrong path simply because of context emotions are neutral and have there time and place Not sure where people have this idea to dismiss them entirely

My obsession with the news is to see if we are headed for the historical loop because I a just quickly. I think my vintage resales gig is over. Defiantly time to go find the simple live I've been unknowingly preparing for for many years. No credit, No dept makes me a minimalist. Americans are being fed to the Wolves of Wall St again. I just had to be sure no one would be coming to save us. Time to let go of what was quickly.

I absolutely love these videos. Einzelgänger, I remember a while back you made a video about Yoda and his philosophies in Star Wars. Can I make a request for another fictional character video? I would really appreciate a video on Uncle Iroh from Avatar: The Last Airbender. He is one of my favorite characters from my childhood and I would love to see a video on him. He has a lot of wisdom on not giving up hope and finding the light in dark places that I think a lot of people would appreciate, especially given today's current events.
