As a retired police officer, I must say you handled yourself professionally. Stated your side of the story calmly, without vulgarity...that...goes a loooong way. Those Sheriffs knew you were getting screwed without even having to know about the trucking industry. Walgreens were just being lazy and / or incompetent. A distribution center that resorts to calling the police because they can not off load half a a truck load of the same product efficiently says more about them then you. Walgreens ought to be ashamed of themselves.

Used to unload trailers it does not take 3 hours to do that, a fully loaded 54ft trailer should only take 30min or so. Walgreens must have maning problems and should just hire people at what they are worth

In theory, The police should have absolutely *NOTHING* to do with whats going on because its a civil matter. Youre not trespassing. Being aggressive or threatening anyone. If i was that sheriff, id go in the office and write the guy who made the call a ticket for wasting police time.
@MINIMAN10000
@MINIMAN10000 2 года назад
Police also have to make sure that civil arguments are being handled lawfully. IE investigate if his forced detention is legal ( the lock ). The reality is that the police are being called in to handle a dispute. Sometimes the person calling the police is the one who is legally in the wrong.
@bigmacdoubleyouv
@bigmacdoubleyouv Год назад
Im no lawyer, but if they were violating a federal law with that two hour rule, seems like it was more than a civil matter.
@rpruneau68
@rpruneau68 Год назад
@@bigmacdoubleyouv Its not really a thing; drivers just feel they are more knowledgeable then they are. This is common occurrence with many issues while looking at the reality of this situation. I heard the same thing when I started my OTR career back in early 2000's about it being illegal to carry a firearm in a CMV. All these seasoned professionals and steering wheel holders would state how you couldn't legally carry a firearm. None of them were able to answer a few simple questions or cite legal statute and governing authority were said laws exist or are being regulated. To test the validity of the federal detention argument there are a few logical questions to consider with regard to the statement as proposed: 1. Federal law. What is the statue number and who is the governing authority? FMCSA, DOT, OSHA, IRS, ATF. There is a common practice or industry standard practice but in reality NO such STATUTE exists. But for argument sake, let's say one does on a Federal level the following question should be answered: 2. Governing Authority. Who is the governing authority and who has jurisdictional control. i.e. who do you contact to enforce such matters, the F.B.I., D.O.T., O.S.H.A., A.T.F., F.E.M.A., I.R.S. or County, local or State police? 3. What is the Process. Is there a specific federal court that listens to these cases and or is there a special magistrate that is in charge and is this criminal or civil? Again, neither cause NO SUCH ORDINANCE EXISTS... Just looking at a few things logically shows how absurd the mere statement of such is, but happens all the time and can't convince those who want to be argumentative of the absurdity of their stubborn illogical and egotistical thinking. Yes it sucks, that we as drivers are at the mercy of some BS practices and have to eat crow and I don't disagree that is not right. But in reality, you are making $1800 or whatever similar value for hauling a half trailer worth of semi-lightweight product a few hours and few hundred miles away. Drop the load, record detention times and put in for compensation and move on. Next time that load comes up its a negotiating point to drive the rate up a few hundred dollars or refuse it altogether. These are choices we have control over. Be grateful you have the opportunity to provide a good living for you and your family and stop sweating the small stuff and control that what we are able. On a side note; the trailer glad hand lock was probably placed on there as a safety precaution since, which you decided was not necessary, since you had obviously been up to them several times to inform them as to your displeasure of waiting for such a long period. It was insurance that an irate driver didn't couple back up to trailer and pull out while a tow motor happened to be completing the operation. Not sympathizing with Walgreens practices, but I also wouldn't want to see a warehouse worker get injured because an irate driver who felt justified, decided to pull his trailer from a dock door without informing them and causing a preventable accident. Two sides to a coin.

Back in the 80's I ran cross country for a major reefer carrier. One warehouse told me that I was to stay at their dock until they were good and ready to finish unloading my truck (I had been sitting at the dock for 3 hours by then). Called my dispatcher who contacted corporate. Not sure what they told him, but I got a beeper message to call dispatch. When I called, I was connected to the CEO of my company, who said "They want to play games, so this is what you do. pull out from the dock, close up and go to this address ( one of our drop yards). Drop that trailer, tke this newer one we have waiting for you. All deliveries to that warehouse are cancelled, they just voided our contract." So I pulled out, closed up and padlocked the trailer. As I was pulling away, the warehouse manager came out yelling for me to stop. I told them to call our 800 number and left. As far as I know, they couldn't get a contract with another company after that, as our CEO put the word out to everyone.

Drove in the 80s as well. Pulled a load for kraft foods going to a federal AAFEEs warehouse. Got there an hour early, they snidely told me as much and they were crazy backed up with trucks. I waited for a door and they kept stalling me even up 2 hrs past my appt. I told them it was $300 an hour detention fee for every hour after 2 from the appt start time starting the first minute after. They told me they won't pay that and I wasn't allowed to leave. I called the freight forwarder and told them I had other freight appts and they needed to fix it. They called around and called back and told me to leave and drop it at their lot at another location. When I went to leave you have to enter and leave thru a gated guarded fenced lot. The manager at AAFEEs told the gate guards not to let me leave. I called the police and threatened to have them charged with unlawful restraint. The cops came and ordered them to open the gate. Mind you this is on Federal Gov't. property. I had the cops get everyone's name involved, the managers, the gate guards, in preventing me from leaving and told them they were going to hear from my lawyer and added as accessories in the lawsuit. That was just to see the look on their faces especially when the police said after they admitted not letting me leave that they could arrest them on the spot. Some jacka** warehouse mgr gov't employee thinking he was the big man in charge. Was paid for the delivery and 3 hrs detention. Went back 6 mths later and was early and left in just over an hour.

As someone who has worked years in Shipping and Receiving I made it my #1 goal to get trucks in and out as efficiently as possible. The problem is that too often the Office people think they need to make Shipping and Receiving pull triple duty and do everything at all times and the truckers suffer from that. I have been through some seriously annoying moments dealing with My Fellow Forklift Drivers frustrations and Frustrated truck drivers and some day all you can do is just reassure them you are doing the best you can to get through everyone as quickly as possible. Most companies regard their shipping dept as the Lazy group that get to sit down all day and just ride around they don't realize how hard you run all day every day to make their BS work.

My parents did long-haul trucking for several years in the 1970s - now I get why they were tearing their hair out half the time. Usually it was complaints about the bad logistics coming from the main office dispatchers. Truckers should be getting treated like gold because they are invaluable to everyone, not "We're calling the police if you try to complain to us about us wasting your time due to our cheap strategy..."

Come on now. Not ALL truckers should be treated like gold. I worked for at least a decade unloading and loading trucks. A few were kicked out of the yard after yelling matches about stupid bull shit without even being unloaded. One place I was at had a lot of LTL loads and they would always make us move stuff around and/or drive through a maze on a trailer to get to our stuff and would get all pissy about possible damage. So I made a waiver the driver had to sign that stated that if they made us touch anyone else's product or drive around anyone else's product that we would not be held liable for any damages. Don't think it held any actual legal standing but we didn't have to do deal with that much more after that. Loads magically started appearing on the lip of the trailer when they'd show up. Wouldn't even drop the plate. Drive up, pick it off, check, sign papers, and he or she would be on their way in less than five minutes.

I even told a half truth once, I was going to run tags to see if anyone had child support warrants then I will have their vehicles towed. I was running someone from an earlier call. This reminds me of my early days of trucking, back in the 80s. I was never so happy as the day I quit PST, driving OTR, and went to work for Clearwater Trucking, an LTL company. 6 years later, I became a line driver for Kimberly Clark, and that was an awesome job as well, mostly drop and hook. The 2 years I worked for PST, most all my deliveries were live load, and back then, you were at the warehouses mercy, and many made you unload it yourself, or hire a lumper. Delivering to grocery and department store warehouses were the worst! I doesn't surprise me, that they attempted to lock your trailer, because office logistic pencil pushers have no idea what's going on. They're like dispatchers. All they know, is they think they're totally in charge, and that the driver is a lump of meat behind the wheel, that is to be controlled, and not listened to. I'm so glad that federal regulations have changed, to help the driver do their job, and put these idiots in their place. The last 11 years of my trucking career was hauling parts for Toyota in Georgetown Kentucky. That was an awesome job, because the JIT contracts Toyota had with suppliers were very strict, and only allow them to detain us 15 min past our window times. When the time limit was reached, we were to leave, with or without their freight. In the 11 years I worked there, that only happened once, and while the supplier was furious over it, there was nothing they could do, accept watch my tail lights fade into the dark... The year I was injured, and had to retire, Toyota was implementing a new cross dock system, which was even better for me, because instead of doing a trip with 3~8 pick ups, I only had to go to one cross dock, and get loaded from all the suppliers in the area, that were picked up by local drivers. Sorry I got wordy, this video just brought back a lot of memories from my years of trucking... LOL!

Walmart would make us wait and some would even tell us to turn off the reefer which is against the law for cold chain product. They would give use an appointment and make you wait until that appointment. They would also refuse a load if you were 30 minutes late. I remember one time it was snowing really bad and they roads were awful. Highway speeds were down to 30 Mph. They refused the load then complained the next day that they were out of milk during a snow storm. LOL funniest thing when my boss told them we were overloaded with deliveries and they would either have to pay an extra fee for delivery or wait until the next delivery day which was once a week for this location. I heard that the manager that refused me was fired by the district. Never had an issue after that at this location.

My dad says many drivers result from "driver mills," basically, the industry is being saturated with low-quality drivers. He has been driving for nearly 30 years, including as a fuel truck driver in the United States Army. He was also taught by old-timers who started their carer in rigs that had two sticks. I actually met one of those old-timers a few years back; as he came to pick up a trailer used for storage at a local thrift store, I was impressed with the love of driving that kept I'm doing it for forty-some od years.

In the UK the government is going to extend drivers driving time, in July 2021, for a limited period they say, to cover a shortage of drivers. Just what drivers want, to work more hours. And in another news item, Iceland, the country, has tried getting people to work a 4 day week, get paid for a 5 day week and productivity creased and people were happier. How about Trying that, truckers work just 4 days a week but get paid for 5 ?

I am so glad that being a former receiver I can finally see the aggravation from the other side. When you a have a decent crew, unloading, no matter what it is, is cake. When the suits remove your help, it puts a real damper on things. I'm jumping to the drivers side here shortly, and I hope I have as few of those situations as possible.

For the past 18 years at my job, I've been occasionally driving a crew-cab super-duty with a 21-foot cargo trailer. At 40+ feet, it's far smaller than these big rigs, but big enough that I need to use the truck/trailer side of highway rest stops and travel plazas. It gave me a new awareness of what truckers have to deal with from ignorant and stupid drivers on the road. In my experience, the average trucker is more skilled and more considerate than 90% of the other drivers out there. Just finished a 16-month voluntary reassignment working in my state agency's COVID-response logistics warehouse. There were times when product was coming in so fast we couldn't put it away before the next load came in (and some times when more stuff came in than we had space to store). NEVER did we make a trucker sit for hours while we shuffled product into rack slots or broke it down by lots. Our inbound crew would drop pallets of product in the aisles between the racks, call over outbound or QA crew with hand jacks to supplement the forklifts, or whatever they had to do to get a trailer unloaded and the driver back on the road. That said, we did reject one trailer that looked like it was loaded using one of those mulch-launcher systems. Several hundred 40-pound cases of PPE all thrown in randomly with no pallets. Even the driver looked at it and said "WTH were they thinking?"

I drive a big truck (not a big rig) and pull a similarly sized trailer for work quite a bit. Finding places with big enough parking so I can run in and grab lunch and back out is a pain in the ass but at least there's this one taco bell that for some reason has like 5x the normal sized parking lot on my route where I can take up a double row of parking spots and there's still 40 spaces left for a place that usually doesn't have more then 5 or 10 cars at a time!

Thank FSMA and "Secure Facility" for that, anyone with a Walmart contract has to lock their facility down, which means somebody would have to sign you in and follow you to the bathroom, stand around until you finish, walk you out. Very few facilities have time for that bullshit and they weren't built with this in mind. We had a porta potty for drivers, then the company just took it away. The receivers are screwed if any drivers need to take a shit and those who sit in offices sure as hell aren't going to do it.

We could do it in 14min if I had my buddy free to jump on the second lift and we would set the timer to see how quick we could do it. If customer service sent a truck to our dock and never let us know about it, that was a different story, at least an hour to find out what was supposed to go on the truck then do the easter egg hunt through the warehouse to find it all, then paperwork from scratch. But if we had a couple-hour heads up of a truck and what it was picking up we could have everything staged. Sometimes the drivers would get a little disappointed because they just laid down to take a nap and we were done before they could get comfortable. But I quit dock work, driving looked like a lot more fun than being stuck in a hot warehouse all day every day. Now I drive the truck.
