How about guessing the air temp and wind speed at noon on January 1 as reported by Sky Harbor on Park Point. The person with the lowest difference between their pick and actual....applied to both temp and wind. Or maybe even reported by Mike with his gear while going live!!

I’m always thankful that they provide a salute. There are some ships that don’t do it. This is another interesting ship to add into the mix now. It’s cool seeing the ships I haven’t seen before. Any ship that starts coming in with the snow or ice is going to be awesome. Moving forward though.
I found this kind of interesting. Her first name was the Louis R. Desmarais. In her early years with this name, she was an active participant in CSL's ship-to-ship coal loading program in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. She would sometimes be part of a 5 at a time group of lakers that would meet a giant ocean bulker and load that salty for overseas destinations. Thus the ocean bulker would not have to enter a port to load and face draft restrictions for load capacities. She has also "topped-off" salt water vessels off the Atlantic Ocean in Nova Scotia. The two salt mines I am most familiar with are Goderich, Canada and Cleveland, Ohio. I've visited the Goderich mine when I boated with my family in the 70s and 80s. So what do you do at the mine?
I bounce from pretty much every job underground there is to do cutter, driller, explosives handler,scaler operator, and LHD operator , and bolter im a jack of all trades lol

You're right Mike. All kinds of boats and ships are coming and going up and down the Piscataway river. One of the most exciting is watching submarines coming in or headed out of the submarine base. 👍
As worn as the hull might look consider this. Over the winter of 2000/2001 she was drydocked at Port Weller Dry Docks at St. Catharines, Ontario, where her old forebody and cargo section was cut off just forward of the aft accommodations. The old forebody was removed from drydocked and towed to the scrapyard in Port Colborne. In its place, a new forebody (bow section) and cargo section was constructed. So basically much of this ship is less than 25 years old. Much newer than if those sections were still of 1977 vintage (original year of construction).

Large diesel engines that Mike Identified as Catapillers on this ship are a sight to behold, the sheer size is mind boggling! A most interesting place to see on a ship is the engine room. Propulsion of ships through engine(s) of the past were unique in that parts of the engine that is internal today wasn't. Today what was external on an engine in the past is now internal, however, some once external mechanized components now internally can be seen with the eyes from outside the engine. This is accomplished by looking through fixed ports of thick glass like would be used in the pilot/wheel house. One can look into the lower part of the engine(s), what's even more amazing is that one can egress into the engine to inspect or... Engine problems at sea, the ships engineer can egress the lower chamber of the engine to assess and or... Many not having maritime knowledge of large ships are unaware of this unique aspect of very large ship propulsion engineering! 🧐

I know this is a ship spotting video Mike, but I have basically been watching ever video you drop (and I have many videos on my RU-vid: Great Lakes) and I been wondering about the city; are you ever going to do a walk threw to show the Shipping culture of the city, because being all your videos take place there I would like to see the city. I know it is full with maratime history and probably has some amazing locations that could serve to bulster your channel.

Some confusion might occur when you hear ocean going ship. There are those of us who call non-salt water ships, " Fresh water ships " or " Freshies " and ocean going ships, " Salty's " .
I say “salties” once in a while. The majority of people that don’t know much about ships will not understand that. That’s why I try to keep it lower level terms so everybody can enjoy.
Understand - I was born in the Great Lake area watching the freshies and then became a US Navy sailor being a salty with 7 plus years of sea duty. All of the ships are great and amazing.

There have been a few questions about the boat and bridge signal horns when the boats are entering and leaving the Port of Duluth. In most cases, once radio communication with the bridge has been established, use of the boat and bridge sound signals are not necessary and operation of the sound signals is left up to the captains. Often, boats will not use the loud horns after dark as a courtesy to city residents. So, most often when you hear the customary whistle/horn-blowing sequence of "long-short-short" it is a friendly salute to the Port of Duluth from the ship captain and is responded to by the lift bridge operator with the same sequence. The Master Salute is an upgraded more formal whistle/horn salute. That is “long-long-long-short-short.” While the famous sound may be a courtesy, it has long been part of the nautical tradition of this great inland sea port.

Most were built at a time when ship builders spared no expense to build super strong ships. Today's shipping companies maintain them generally really well. They aren't cruise ships catering to the wine and cheese crowd. They are designed to move very heavy bulk dirty cargo. And boy are they cost effective in moving their loads. Most transport cargo just as well today as back when they were constructed. If they don't, or are too expensive to maintain .....then they get retired or scrapped.
