今天和各位講的善知識
Today I'm going to talk about
a good learned advisor.
你有好的父母
Your good parents
好的父母就是你的善知識
are your good learned advisors.
你去讀書
When you study,
好的老師就是你的善知識
your good teachers are
your good learned advisors.
你交朋友都是善友
Your good friends that you've made
這是你的善知識
are your good learned advisors.
說我們一個人的成長
If one wants to grow spiritually,
要想成功
or become successful,
我想沒有一、兩百位善知識
one may need 100 to 200
good learned advisors to help us.
覺得他的
Sometimes we may appreciate
這很好的話、很好的道理
the good words or truths that they say,
一句、兩句吧
though they are just a few words or truths.
我能有一百人、兩百人
Learn from 100 or even 200
of your friends,
都跟我講過 我都記得
and remember what they said to you,
我都有受用
you will benefit greatly from them.
你至少也要三、五十人
If you don't have that many friends,
at least make 30 or 50 friends
都是我的善知識
to become your good learned advisors,
我的好老師、好朋友
good teachers, and good friends.
所以佛教
So Buddhism
一定就要教人親近善知識
asks us to approach good learned advisors.
沒有善知識
If one has no good learned advisors,
就沒有助緣幫忙你
he won't have any good condition
to tide him over.
在你灰心、失意的時候
When you feel despondent or frustrated,
沒有人給你開導
nobody will guide you,
沒有人給你鼓勵
nobody will encourage you,
你很容易就退心
you will easily fall back on your faith,
很容易失敗
and so you'll be doomed to failure.
是非常可惜的
This is quite a pity!
所以諸佛菩薩
So buddhas and bodhisattvas
是我們的善知識
are our good learned advisors,
諸位聖賢、大德
sages and great venerables
都是我們的善知識
are our good learned advisors,
諸位好人、善人
good and wholesome men
都是我們的善知識
are also our good learned advisors.
一個人不能把自己關閉
One cannot just shut himself up
沒有親近善知識
and keep away from good learned advisors.
就是沒有一個偶像
Without an idol
沒有一個形象做我的模範
or an apotheosis,
這不容易成長、不容易進步
one finds it difficult to grow spiritually
and make improvement.
所以要想成功的話你必須
So if you want to succeed, you must
訪師尋友
look for teachers and friends
到處參學問道
and seek their advice wherever you go.
為什麼 我要找善知識
Why do I need to find
good learned advisors?
當然有好多的善知識
Your good learned advisors
給你開導、給你開示
can give you guidance
and instructions.
你不高興
If you don't like it,
可惜
it would be a pity!
聞善言要著意
Bear good advice in mind.
你不必傲慢
Don't be arrogant
這個人也不好 那個人也不好
and criticize others for their imperfection.
不對的
This is wrong.
對善知識要觀德莫觀失
In dealing with a good learned advisor,
你要看他的道德的一面
try to look at his moral side
不要說他的缺陷
rather than his defects like
這個人講話不流暢
his stammer,
這個人禮貌不周全
his indiscretion,
這個人相貌不莊嚴
his indignified looks,
這個人很貧窮
or his poverty.
不是這樣的
You shouldn't have to.
只要他有道德
If he has morals,
只要他肯能傳授我
and is willing to guide me
只要他對我有好的知識
or impart knowledge to us,
都是我們的善知識
he will be our good learned advisor.
這個世間上善知識是處處有
There are good learned advisors
everywhere in the world.
三人行 必有我師焉
Two heads are always better then one.
但是你如何去找到善知識呢
But how can you find
a good learned advisor?
你也要肯得虛心下問
You need to be modest
你要肯得自己謙虛跟他問道
when asking for his advice.
佛菩薩到了你的前面
If a buddha or bodhisattva
appeared in front of you,
釋迦牟尼佛來了
or even, the Sakyamuni Buddha came,
你還把他當一個普通的老和尚
and you just treated him
as an ordinary old monk,
可惜
it would be a pity!
所以善知識就在我們的左右旁邊
So good learned advisors
are just around us.
很多的
There are many of them.
希望我們各位佛教徒們
It is hoped that Buddhists like you
對於別人的尊重
could show others respect.
找到善知識
In that way you can definitely
find a good learned advisor
你必能得大利益
and be benefited from him greatly.
