Two commonly confused words are 안 and 못, which can both be attached in front of a Pure Korean verb. These have completely different meanings, but we’ll talk about how to use each one so you won’t confuse them anymore. We’ll also talk a little bit about what a Pure Korean verb is.

As always you have helped me when I just don’t get something. I hope in your follow on video you will include why it looks like “안” changes to “...지 않습니다” when “도” (either) is added to a sentence. Is it the pure vs sino verb issue or just because “either” was added?
@JanelleStollfus
@JanelleStollfus 5 лет назад
I still need help understanding when/why this change happens, but I did find out it’s called short-form negation vs. long-form negation. I think.

They're unrelated. You can learn about how to say "don't" in this live stream: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zLJSp2N8caY.html

You said 못 expresses “can’t” / not able to (do) xyz. Isn’t this way of negation similar to the grammar rule “V을/ㄹ 수 없다 (/있다) ?? (I hope my question was understandable, English isn’t my first language)
@GoBillyKorean
@GoBillyKorean 3 года назад
Yes, it's similar to that. In the future I'll make a video going in depth about their differences, but if you're only trying to say that you're unable to do something you can use either one :)

Thank you for this video but i have a question!what is 긴?like 고맙긴 or 맞긴...
@LiviaKpop
@LiviaKpop 5 лет назад
So, is 못 different than using 을/ㄹ 수 있다? I'm guessing that 못 is more like, "I don't~ (because of something)," and 을/ㄹ 수 있다 is just, "I'm incapable of doing~."

So 영 못했어 Is I can't English?
@remi8792
@remi8792 5 лет назад
영'어' 못해요 = I can't (speak) English. The 어 is the part that means language. 했어 is past tense so it would mean "couldn't". I just changed it to present tense. In translating, "speak" sounds more natural to use; I think a more direct translation would be "can't do English language".

@wlwuriwp7081

They are used in the same sense but 못가요 is often used when people talk to each other, and 갈수없어 is used as an expression of sentences in books.
