Still a flashpoint of the Cold War era, the demilitarized zone (DMZ) separating the two Koreas has become a popular tourist site.
From Paju, South Korea (Imjingak), half-day tours shuttle visitors to the Third Tunnel, an ominous reminder of the looming threat by the neighbouring North Korea. Along the way, daytrippers can peak into the authoritarian nation from the new Dora Observatory.
Within the Imjingak Peace Park, there is the Peace Gondola to transport sightseers over the Imjin River into the Civilian Control Line (CCL.) Where a U.S. Army Base was stationed, an aft gallery and exhibition displays the history of the Korean War.
Follow along with Matt as he bounces through the DMZ, on a budget, to get a taste of this historical and curious geopolitical oddity.
