A suggestion is to hand sew in bra strap holders that easily saps closed. Was a feature of many couture and higher end clothes of past. I remember seeing them in my mothers' outfits from the 50s - 70s, along with sweat sheilds.

That Barbie Rapunzel paint brush envy was some instant nostalgia. Also, the brown imitation fur complemented your hair so nicely!

I wonder if adding some trim at the neckline could bring it in enough to hide the bra straps? A satiny black ribbon or some lace? This really is a cute dress and I’m thrilled with how easily it came together for you!

To fix neck line gaping during the drafting stage, use a method called contouring. I found it when making my bodice block. There are lots of videos about it here on RU-vid and it is really simple. The finished dress is beautiful! Love the cape/jacket!!

I have so many plaids in my stash, but most of them were bought as remnants so they're less than a yard. That capelet looks perfect to make if I can find two matching less-than-a-yard pieces. And so cute!

The jacket+capelet is just too damn cute and amazing, I need to sew one asap!!! I love, love, love capes and have made several for myself, but they're not always practical for my life, so this would be the perfect thing - I still get to wear a cape, but it's more useful in my daily life!

I LOVE the concept of 'low stakes projects' and have been trying to incorporate that into my sewing practice - I like to have several projects on the go - my intensive educational ones and balance them with low stakes ones (palate cleansers ;)) - makes for much more enjoyable sewing!

I’m so envious! My mother had a very long tartan dress known as her “Christmas dress”. Sadly there was no way it could ever be altered to fit me, and I’ve wanted one similar (but with a fuller skirt) ever since. One day when I can afford that yardage of pure wool tartan I will make one; I definitely want it pure wool as I’m sick of synthetic materials! You ensemble is absolutely gorgeous.

That dress is gorgeous! Not gonna lie, I’ve also eyed that dress on Shirinatra. This year was also my year to teach myself flat patterning. And it is the most tricky but also rewarding thing ever! (Unsolicited advice coming, ignore if you want!!) I’ve got the pattern book the Closet Historian always talks about and for low necks, it recommends contouring. Haven’t tried it yet to see how it works, but it sounds promising for when I do try something lower!

I really appreciate what you had to say about low-stakes projects! I lose out on a lot of good sewing time just twisting myself up in knots about how I need to do it perfectly for a perfect end product I'll wear for the rest of eternity, when the joy of many projects can be just be what you said- having aha! moments, learning new skills, thinking about what you'd do differently next time. The finished garment is a bonus. AND a lovely stash dress, thanks for sharing 🖤

I made a quilt last year with scraps from clothes that my mom made int he 70s that she passed on to me in the 90s, along with scraps from clothes I got in India in 89-90. I am totally an unapologetic scrap hoarder 😁😁

I really like the fur trim on the jacket/cape... add bra holder straps to the dress...it's a quick "fix"...you can add two sets-at the shoulder and then in front around armpit level which might help with getting it to lay better without exposing bra straps

Not everyone has a serger, BUT there's also those of us who have one, but use it less than we might because we don't really think to use it for applications like that. I'm so used to seeing costubers show every method *but* serging, it was a moment for me to see how simple of a solution that was - as opposed to trimming back the raw edge of the fabric then stitching down the zipper tape to enclose the raw edge (either prick stitch by hand, or topstich through to the outside). Which would certainly work, but possibly add more rigidity along the zipper than is ideal for that fabric. I'm not sure I've actually seen anyone do it that way, but that's what came to mind.

It would be interesting to see wear that dress or the cape in different ways with the rest of your wardrobe. I'm currently starting my own self-made capsule wardrobe and am always curious on how people style their items. Happy holidays to you 😀

I wish I remembered more details from when I took a couple community college sewing classes, but there is a specific adjustment we were shown for if you want to change a high neck pattern to a scoop neck (or presumably any lower neckline). it was very similar to how you might change a dart's position, or combining two darts into one. except at the neck there is no dart, but you cut into the pattern and rotate the excess around so that one of the darts takes care of it...somehow, idk it seemed like magic lol

I can confirm the fabric is the Royal Stewart (modern) tartan. It's my family tartan, though now I'm married it's changed! Yes, we Scots are confusing!

Ended up buying 8 metres because I am VERY VERY fussy about pattern matching. To go with it, I'm planning an Armistice blouse, in clotted cream lawn and lots of lace. Hopefully, it will be done ready for New Year's Eve. It's not my Clan tartan, but that doesn't matter. I hear Hogmanay has been 'cancelled' in Scotland.😱

I like the dress but I LOVE the capelet/jacket! So winter-y!

I think you should consider taking another pass at the bodice on this dress. Maybe split the bodice down the center front, and add a lace-up detail to take up the extra fabric and add a little element that will peek out under the coat. Overall the dress looks great, and the cape/coat will be super versatile. You'll probably wear that quite a bit.

I had a similar issue with gaping when i made lower square neckline from my own block pattern that i had adjusted from a shirt pattern that had more built-in ease than i had realized. I found that a pretty good fix was to pinch the fabric that gapes at the neckline to see how big of an extra bust dart would fix the problem. Then mimick that on the flat pattern and rotate that dart into merging with one of your other bust darts.

Absolutely gorgeous! That fabric looks so wonderful on you and the design of the dress is very flattering! I know you mentioned being unhappy with the neck line, and you may enjoy digging into contour lines in relation to block patterning. They're a way of taking into account the extra dips and curves of the body when doing deep cut-outs like your neckline. It might help a lot with that kind of gapping. They seem really confusing at first but once you get into it they make a lot of sense!

Nice! I love the hooded cape and need to try to make something like that... and the fur was a nice touch too. Thanks for showing your assembly tricks, I'm new to lined garments and it's always nice to see different ways to do it. I'm doing my first foray into plaid pattern matching with some 100% unknown fibre content stuff I got at $6/m cause it was purple plaid and it felt suspiciously like wool... grabbed enough for a couple projects, brought it home, set some on fire... pure wool, near as I can tell (so I went back and bought the rest of the bolt because it calls to me).... so once I was done with my first project using my new princess seam bodice block, I HAD to do something with the wool plaid so I'm making a house coat to wear over my flannel house dresses when my house is too cold. Still not sure if it's going to get a lining or not (I'll probably just fell everything since I love handsewing and find felling seams to be pretty zen) or what I'm doing with the collar, and there's one "piecing is period" spot where the person who cut the bolt previously did not cut it at all straight, but I DID get the horizontal stripes in the pattern to match, and the vertical ones are at least symmetrical, so I'm calling it a win. Now I just need to learn how to use darts and make a bodice block consisting of fewer pieces!!

There's just something about Red Plaid & Christmas. I had a pleated skirt when I was a kid, in a near-identical tartan to this dress, that I brought out every Christmas until I had outgrown it. A few years ago I bought some red & black "buffalo plaid" flannel to make my brother some pajama pants for Christmas, and used the leftover to make a cute blouse with a gathered peplum. I wore it tonight to a Christmas Eve service even (and ended up matching with about 10 other people. I really wish we had done a group photo, it would have been adorable. Ranging from 2 to 92, all in our cozy checks). I'm totally biased towards red in general (my initials are R.E.D.) but there's just something about a rich red in winter (even without snow, but better against the blinding white). Anyways... Beautiful! You could wear a chemise or blouse under the dress since it's roomy. The cape/jacket would look good with anything, even jeans.
