Hello friends! :) Today's video is a bit different from usual, but it is a topic that is worth listening to. It is about Pride & Pet Ownership - specifically pride when giving and taking criticism. Too often we let our pride and ego get in the way of learning or teaching others. We don't like being wrong or we feel it's our job to tell others THEY are wrong. Let's try to each work on swallowing our pride and ego, admitting our mistakes, and being willing to change if needed. It will make the atmosphere in the pet community more harmonious! :) Thanks for watching! ♡ ♡ ♡

Yes! It always breaks my heart to see people get bullied on forums and groups. Bulling someone won’t help them or their hamster. It puts them off and the hamster may suffer for it. It’s so important to be kind and respectful when giving advice but it’s also important to give people time to process it. Most of us need time to think things over before we change our minds :)
@HoppingHammy
@HoppingHammy 5 лет назад
I agree so much and it does oftentimes put people off to ever asking for help again. Ultimately, the hamster is the one who suffers because the owner was driven away by rude responses. You're also correct that many people *do* need time to think things over and come to the conclusion for themselves, not because they were being forced to by others. Thanks for your great input Hammy Time! :)

This is so true! I try my hardest to live by example. Show people what I do, explain why I do it, but if people don’t agree with me, there is no way I can change it. It’s hard to get hurtful comments from people about how I should live or how I should care for my animals, but I know arguing will never get me anywhere. And for the most part, people are genuinely kind and happy. The people who get upset just happen to be the loudest. However we all fall short and all have issues with pride. I know I still struggle sometimes in my own heart. I think about what I could say back to a person and get all upset. But that is not my place. Loved this video! ❤️
@HoppingHammy
@HoppingHammy 5 лет назад
Showing and living by example is such a great way for you to go about it and help others to learn. :) You're right, this is an issue each one of us has to deal with in our heart, easier said than done! I think being able to recognize pride within ourselves is half of the battle right there. Once we recognize and acknowledge it, we can better address it and change how we interact with other people. Thanks for your comment! ❤️

I haven’t even watched it yet and I’m VERY excited you’re discussing this. I have always wanted to make a video about the way people criticize others and the way people receive criticism in the pet community. Okay I’ve finished watching and I love the way you addressed both sides! Bullying those who are seeking help is a huge problem, especially in Facebook groups and forums. And giving advice to someone can be exhausting if they’re not being open-minded. Great video.
@HoppingHammy
@HoppingHammy 5 лет назад
Thank you Jessica! You are so right that bullying has become such an issue in these types of groups and forums lately. Of course there are also people being far too proud to receive any form of constructive criticism too. I hope to see these two issues lessen, but it will take work from all of us in how we choose to interact with and speak to others. :) Thanks for your comment!
@peachypetparadise27

Excellent topic, I completely agree! No matter what advice we give out, we aren't forcing people to take the advice, we are informing and making them aware of the situation but it is always their choice to take the advice or not. I also see blunt criticism all the time and it really is about how you word it. If you are blunt and not respectful about it then they are going find that rude and in result ignore your advice. But this can simply be resolved if you word your advice better and put it in more of respectful way. You should gain more respect and possibly change someone's mind just by being a bit kinder about it. Brilliant video! :)
@HoppingHammy
@HoppingHammy 5 лет назад
Hi Peachy PetParadise! Your comment is SO good! Thank you for sharing all of that. You also reminded me of a quote that I wish I would have included in this video. It goes something like: *"If you say something offensively, it will be taken defensively."* This is almost always true in every situation. Respect and kind wording goes a long way. Obviously there will always be those people who choose not to listen, but we never know if they're pondering our advice and might change in future! :)

This video really make me reflect on how I give advises to other people in forums and groups. While certain posts and comment really set a fire off in me, I know I should remain calm and not vent that frustrations in the replies I give. It is down to anger management. Thanks HoppingHammy. This video is a really good reminder.

Hello! :) I just want to say that is extremely mature of you to reflect and consider how you can better respond to people. This is how positive change will come, is by each of us being willing to take accountability for our own behavior, not blaming others or expecting others to change. It starts with each of us. Thank you for taking it to heart. :)

This video is so important. Unfortunately, in the pet community I see a lot of bullying. Thank you for sharing this video with us and I really do hope it helps the community as a whole 💕

I think that the things that you say apply to people generally and not just about pet ownership. Pride goeth before the fall... it’s important to treat others the way that we ourselves would like to be treated. Glad to hear you preach it sister.❤️

Firstly it's lovely to see you back 😊 Secondly you're do right in all you said. Just because someone is making mistakes they still deserve to be treated with respect and are far more likely to listen to another point of view if it's put as that..a point of view and not shouted at them. Dignity to all tends to spread forward, abuse tends to isolate.
@HoppingHammy
@HoppingHammy 5 лет назад
Hi Debbie and thank you! 😊 You are right and thanks for sharing that with us. It does require a level of self control not to get upset at others sometimes, but the more we work on being nice the easier it gets over time. I really like seeing debates or questions online where there's pages of replies and input, but all of them remain respectful towards the viewpoints of others. That's honestly the best way to learn and grow - not by yelling at one another!

HoppingHammy isn't that one of the fab things about RU-vid and other forums??!! We can reply to people we've never met, know very little about and probably never will. Our opinions are allowed to speak for themselves without interruption and we can read others at our leisure. Kind of makes me realise what an interesting world we live in and we each have just as an important role as everyone else ❤

I think this is a great topic and a wonderful way to carry it out. When I tell someone what they are doing might not be right, I try to tell them that this is what I do, and it works for me. This way they don't see it as criticism, but as an alternative way that works for me. Then they are more likely to do it. Thank you so much for this video HH!

Hello HH, what a great topic to touch on, and I completely relate, on both sides. I watched a whole online community (I think maybe you know the one) die out because of judgement and criticism and the aftermath of it all. (well ok, maybe its still limping along over there, but idk, I left long ago and have never looked back. Still don't regret it ether). One thing that wasn't mentioned that I think is super important is the difference between online criticism/conversation and actual face to face talking. In text based conversation its is so SO easy to word something just off enough that your intended meaning can come across as potentially rude or snappy to somebody. Yes, using emojis helps. I know some people (or at least a few in the community I was part of) think its sugar coating, but as long as they aren't over used, its more like a replacement for body language and vocal cues you wouldn't otherwise get through text. Its helps set the mood or tone in which you said something :) On the same note, its also far too easy to read something somebody else said the wrong way, especially when you were already in a bad mood, or if it was something you didn't want to hear etc. I like to ere on the side of positivity and assume that whatever they said was meant to be positive and helpful rather than negative or rude. I actually do this way too much with my best friend when we text (which is all the time). I always read her texts wrong and get all worked up, end up saying something stupid because in the heat of the moment and then we argue for a bit before going back to best friend status. As a result, I actually really hate texting now, even though we still do it. I much prefer a phone call, or a facetime call. Gets info across so much faster, and you have the vocal cues and tones/body language so there are no misunderstandings in what is ment.
@HoppingHammy
@HoppingHammy 5 лет назад
Hi Melodie! :) Thanks for sharing your thoughts and tips with us! That's a good point about the emojis and I agree, although sadly there are so many people who refuse to use them as they say it isn't their style to. If this is the case, that person needs to be extra careful to ensure their text sounds pleasant and cheery. (Honestly it isn't that difficult to add a single smiley face at the end of sentence though!) All of us should be willing to adjust our "style" depending upon who we are talking to in order to better communicate and understand one another. This is far better than expecting others to adjust to us, and having misunderstandings and upsets! :) It's great that you and your friend have worked it out to do phone or facetime calls as it definitely is easier to hear tone and understand as opposed to reading a text! 👍🏼 P.s. I hope you're doing well!

I have to agree, it's such an important topic! I've seen puppies doing agility when their bones need to fuse and grow fully before you begin jumping them, but i always worry about telling people (so i don't) that it's super important! I really wish people were a tad more honest as i would love for people to say what they think I'm doing wrong! There's always a nice way to put things towards people! But then again i see people who are always being so rude telling people not to do things! Blocking people because they gave kind advice is so heartbreaking to see. I think here we all own pets and love them more than anything in the world and we want the best for them. Where kind and constructive criticism is often needed! So happy someone finally addressed this
@HoppingHammy
@HoppingHammy 5 лет назад
Eeek, I can just imagine how the dog community must be regarding certain topics. I don't think you need to worry about informing people though, and in fact it's needed for the sake of helping others to learn. As long as you are saying it nicely and are willing to move on if someone refuse's the advice, then you've done your part! :) There will be some who perhaps listen and others who won't. Thanks for adding your thoughts and I enjoyed reading them!

Everyone starts somewhere in making mistakes and what caused them to correct those errors was educational advice. I hate it when people who are rude in giving criticism expecting the receiver to kiss up to them. Like 😂😂😂 would you do that when criticized and attacked? No, obviously. So don't do it to others. I agree with your words, "Please grow up."

Kashi is so cute! She's thriving!😻 Exactly! We're all here because we love our animals and want to do what's best for them, but what other's do with their pets isn't always what we feel is right and vise-versa. Something very bad happened to one of my babies, Papa Neville, and I reached out for help and everyone attacked me. Afterwards I saw that an amazing person reached out with kind words and that helped me when I needed it, saying the same things but in such a different way. Great video! 🎃🌻🐹🌼🍁

Hey I have a quick question. My hamster bin cage is 25” in length and 18” in width. Is that too small because it seems small but it’s 450 square feet. Also if it is too small then can I just add another bin on the side to add more floor space?
@the.piggie.brothers6568

Sherley Pita actually that’s the minimum cage size so your cage is actually a good size for your hamster, but never feel shy to give your hamster more space and room to roam!

@HoppingHammy
@HoppingHammy 5 лет назад
Hi there! It's really good that you are asking this ahead of time. I would like to very strongly suggest to you not to get 2 random dwarfs and put them together. Related dwarfs (sister / sister or mom / daughter for example) don't always do well in pairs as it is, and more often than not they will need to be separated. When you take 2 unrelated dwarf hamsters and pair them, this is even more risky and dangerous. Honestly dwarfs can do just fine staying solitary, and this is what I tend to suggest to my viewers. :) If your sister wants her own hamster, please ensure that both of you keep them separate and never have them meet or play together. As another potential risk to mention, dwarfs are very difficult to tell the sex. If you put them together and they end up being a male and female, they could mate very quickly and then you'll end up in a bad situation with too many hamsters. I hope this info can help you! If you have any other questions or would like more opinions other than just mine, feel free to ask at www.hamsterhideout.com/forum and I'm sure you'll get some good info there as well. :)

Hi, just wanted to tell you my experience. I bought two hamsters that were from the same clutch. We were told by multiple places that this would be ok but we should never buy hamsters from different clutches and put them together cause they will fight. After bringing our hamsters home they got along well for a while but we had to separate them for fighting. Then they would start to bite us. I didn't end up as we expected. It ended up being a lot of work separating and regaining the hamsters trust. I would suggest one hamster in one cage. Good luck! :0)

I've been wanting to start a pet related RU-vid channel for so long. I take criticism very well and if someone tells me I'm doing something wrong I'll do more research on that certain topic and see if they're right. What I can't handle is hate though. It sucks because some people are so bold and mean without realizing it. Hope I can get over this "fear" and finally start a channel after all these years :/

This was very mind opening video and hopefully many people can take something new from watching this. I agree it's a bad excuse to say "it's just the way I am and I'm proud of it." That's a horrible excuse and the crazy people who say that are the same people who cry their booties off when someone speaks to them that same way. Like really it seems like people forget basic manners and just think because they're not kindergarten they can be so bad. Also HoppingHammy do you have any tips for feeling confident in yourself and not being embarrassed because you don't wear popular brands like everyone else and just not being afraid of yourself?

This is such a good video. I and many people see these things happen. Especially on forums or hamster groups on Facebook. Its hard to give criticism and advice without sounding rude (with text). Some people take it in a good way and some just make a whole scene out of it. I personally dont like to get involved in such things. I know there are others that are willing to say the things that are necessary depending the circumstances. I most of the time read comments. But never like to be involved because i dont want to sound rude and there are already tons of people saying the same thing. So why would i repeat it? I know someone who has 2 kids. Both had a hamster. Both in a very small cage (2 cages). I asked her if she was open for advice to take better care or the hamsters. And i told her like pages full of information. And i told her that the detolf is a great cage. They can split it up in 2 cages (its not the recommended size anymore but its more than i could ask for, its a pretty big cage in general, so that she is accepting such a big cage that would sit in the living room, was okay for me. Many people wouldnt want to invest in something THAT big for a hamster). Sooo what did she do. 2 days later she had the detolf already set up in the living room. We only had to figure out how to split it up. I did some research and had found the best way. The same day they went to the hardware store and bought a small plank and cut it to size with slits on the bottom so the bars of the detolf could fit in it. Next day it was all done. Both hamsters super happy. Running. Not biting bars anymore. Are not stressed anymore. Kids happy. Mom happy. And im especially happy because she took my advise by heart. She was soo sweet. That makes my day. When i can help someone without making that person feel like he or she is being attacked. But there are also a lot of people who think they know better becayse theyve had hamsters their whole life. They tell me they know how to care for hamsters while they are doing everything wrong. When someone doesnt want to listen. Ill just accept it. I think you did a great job of sharing this. I think a lot of people relate in some way or another. Thanks for uploading. I didnt expect it this time. Xxxx have a nice day. Sorry for the long story. Haha. I have before and after pictures of the cage change. Ill send it on fb if youd like to see it. Bye bye❤

Yes, sometimes it can be difficult to read text and not hear a tone, so that's why I think it's good to either use smileys :) :) Or if that isn't someone's style then they need to ensure their words are pleasant and not overly blunt. Adding in some compliments helps too! That's awesome that you were able to help someone and that they were willing to take the advice! You went about it in a proper way too, asking her if she was open for advice and not shoving it down her throat. Well done! I also agree with you that if too many people are giving someone criticism, it really isn't necessary to hop on board and add to it. People don't need to be ganged up on. Anyway, thanks so much for your comment and yeah, today's video was a bit of a surprise for me too! I felt well yesterday and was able to film again so soon after the other! Take care! 💖 💖 💖

@@HoppingHammy ah thank you. Yes i approach people carefully. I always use smileys especially when i think its maybe going to come over as rude or mean. Its very important to think about how you say something before actually saying it. Especially when it comes to giving advice or criticism.
@sydneytaylor8128

I agree. Well, I actually would rather be told if I were doing something wrong, but that's just because I know about what's healthy for hamsters or small pets and I know that lots of things are dangerous and unsafe. If someone tells me that a toy I've been using for mice has been known to cause injury, I appreciate being told. But not everyone knows this, and if you're just someone who has a hamster and is just now being told that everything is wrong, it can be stressful. The thing about giving criticism is that it's really only okay in my opinion if you're trying to help something that's harming someone else. If you're kindly telling someone that their cage is too small and are offering cheap alternatives, that's fine. But when someone tries to criticise you unsolicited on a purely opinionated matter- something, like, the way you draw things or the way you prefer to play a video game, it's okay to be a little defensive. If they're offering advice on how to make things easier, that's fine, but if they say, "I don't like the way you draw cat ears, you should make them smaller" or "you need to pay more attention to the dialogue in this game," It's just uncalled for.

I can't remember which vid I posted a question about using www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/reptile/reptile-habitats-and-enclosures/exo-terra-med-wide-terrarium-24x18x18 for hamster or gerbils. Now from what I've read for hamsters, it comes up short. I'm now considering prevue 528, as it has some great reviews, should I decide to go with a hamster. I'm still doing research as I'm not sure exactly when or if I'm actually going to get any.

so when i bought my cage for my syrian i got a 40 gallon BR. When i bought it the people at the pet store made me feel so bad and shamed me for getting it for a hamster :( i know i did the right thing by getting him a big cage but it made me feel so bad about getting it.
@HoppingHammy
@HoppingHammy 5 лет назад
Don't feel bad. :) It's very common for pet store workers to be misinformed about hamsters and their needs regarding cage size. You're doing the right thing by providing more space than the typical Crittertrail cage would provide. In fact, even a 40 gallon BR tank is not always big enough for some hamsters, but I'm sure your hamster will very much appreciate the space! Well done!

I have not yet personally experienced this, as I am still in the wanting a hammy phase, BUT what offends me more than seeing others being corrected is the three page pile-on. I have watched people respond graciously to the first few posts correcting them but then lose face after how many more there are that are telling them the exact same thing over and over and over and over and over and over....

You do bring up another VERY valid problem that seems to happen, so thank you for mentioning this! I do agree that this "ganging up on" really should stop as well, because the person surely got the point after 5-10 posts. It only adds frustration to have too many people repeating the same thing.

I hate the way the world is filling up with people saying "it's just the way I am, I say what I think and don't sugar coat it". They are the same people that share pictures on social media that say "I'm a b**** and proud" etc and I am like, when did being a b**** start being a good thing? When did being rude become acceptable. Makes me yearn to go back to the 80's, before the internet made the world stop sugar coating things that really should have remained so.

Hello! I do very much agree with you that too many people nowadays are using the "It's just the way I am!" as an excuse to run their mouth in a rude way. Yes it takes effort to change how we naturally might want to respond to people, but it's entirely possible. Thank you for sharing! As a side note, may I kindly ask for you to edit out the vulgar words from your post and just put a "_____" instead? I'm sure people will figure out the word you implied, but I do have very young children who watch my videos and I like to keep all comments family friendly. :) Thank you so much as I don't want to have to delete your post!

My hamster 1 year old Syrian hamster chewed a hole in her cage, and I can’t seem to keep her in, what can I do?
@HoppingHammy
@HoppingHammy 5 лет назад
Hello Isabel! Is this a plastic type of cage? If so, that's tough and I can't think of any way you could patch it up to where she wouldn't chew out again. Oftentimes hamsters might become obsessive chewers if they are bored, if their cage is too small, or if it doesn't have enough enrichment and things to keep them busy. Could this possibly be the issue? If so, would you consider investing in a glass tank instead? Tanks are great because a hamster can't chew out of the base and as long as you have a secure lid, they can't escape either. :) As far as size goes, a 40 breeder or 55 gallon could be a good starting point for you to look at, but be aware that female Syrians really benefit and thrive from something even bigger. I hope this info helps you!

so is it ok if i leaf a suggestion for you, cause i really love kashis cage and all the different themes but i kinda miss a digging area for kashi, hamsters really love to dig in an area that has at least 15.8 deep bedding also the general bedding should be between 9.9 and 11.9 inches deep. I'm not sure if this is already the case as it is a bit to hard to see on your videos. So if your bedding already is this deep great if not then you could consider to maybe try it out ☺️

I tried to be gentle and calm when talking to a close friend of mine but she really isn’t caring for her hamster correctly and I just find it so distracting like for example she kept saying that she was worried her hamster was too cold ( this was during winter and it was snowing ) so I said why doesn’t she use the carefresh I brought her instead of wood based substrate and she said no so I asked why and she said “I believe u and it probably would make him warmer but I don’t want to” so I asked why and she said “because I just don’t” I just honestly can’t understand some people .... I don’t it so frustrating
@HoppingHammy
@HoppingHammy 5 лет назад
Yes, it certainly can feel very frustrating when people choose to do things in a way that doesn't make sense to us or doesn't seem logical. In cases like this, you can perhaps mention (gently) a couple of times and if your friend continues to do otherwise, you'll have to choose to let it go. It's her hamster, and there isn't anything you can do about her care. Have you suggested shredded toilet tissue, as a second option? Maybe she might try that. :) Another thought is to give the hamster a solid, proper-sized wooden house. Hamsters tend to stuff their houses with bedding, so this could help him to stay warm. Anyway, try not to get frustrated if your friend doesn't listen to you.

Hi Hopping hammy. I know you have a forum link below but I have received zero replies. Since you seem to be a very knowledgeable hamster pro, I hope it's ok to post my question here? I have a Syrian hamster female, named Daisy. We have had her for about 4 months now. She is a full size adult. Over the past two days she has seemed to be a bit more lethargic and cranky. She is getting up later than usual too. I checked her rear and no wetness or sign of wet tail, she is eating her food which consists of pellets and some fresh lettuce and carrots or apples. And eventually she will get in her ball to run around. There haven't been any major temperature changes either. I'm worried she could be mildly sick? Also wondering if maybe she's just bored? She usually is very high energy and loves her wheel and burrowing and can't wait to get into her ball when she wakes up. She's just not her usual self. Anyone with any suggestions I'm all ears!
