PEMDAS is not wrong, it is just often poorly explained. Where either 'P' for parenthesis or 'B' for brackets are first; from left to right or working the inner most P/B first, then Exponents; left to right, then M/D; where 'M' comes first if it is required or 'D' if there is no 'M' function, then the same for 'A/S'; where Adding comes first before subtraction, unless there is no addition component. At least, that's how I learned it.

7:55 the multiplication by juxtaposition rule would take priority over PEMDAS. The 2(3) should be resolved first, and then you would have 6/6, which would be 1.
@Vibe77Guy
@Vibe77Guy 20 дней назад
6 halves of the quantity (1+2) is indeed 9. In keeping with all other formulas with fractional coefficients. However, 6÷2(2+1) fails dimensional analysis unless the parenthetical expression 2(2+1) is fully resolved prior to the division. 6kwh÷2h(1kw+2kw)= 6kwh÷6kwh=1 cycle. The results of doing it otherwise are in units of square kilowatts, and spurious units indicate spurious results. Implicit notation includes the implicit grouping relationship of all of the factors and coefficients involved in the implicitly joined expressions. This is true of ALL engineering and scientific formulas. Especially those with fractional coefficients. Also Distance divided by circumference is revolutions. So D÷2πr=D÷(2πr)= D÷(πd)=revolutions But D/2πr would be interpreted as (D/2)πr, or (D/π)d neither of which will return revolutions, but instead differing results in units of area. Neither of which is correct.

I just found your math videos today and I have subscribed because your style helps me and makes sense to me. I started college last summer and this math class is kicking my ass mainly since I was homeschooled as a kid. The emphasis by my mother was on words and not on numbers or math so I have been at this odd disadvantage. Thank you for making these videos. I will be watching more of them to help me to pass this bleeping math course. :D Oh and thank you for the Red Boxes! I started boxing my answers when I would test or correct answers so that I could rework problems and I found it really heart warming that you use boxes too! *BIG HUGS* But most of all thank you for the introduction because I do feel as if other people will think me stupid if I can't do the math or have problems, and that idea does keep me from getting help or asking for help. I just don't think with numbers I think in words lots of words and the better things are explained verbally or in writing the better I retain and deal with it. I am sure to other people it sounds odd. But all that fear I have of being dis'd for not being smart in math does is keep me from getting help and learning anything. So thank you so much for being respectful of that.

Thank God I found your video! Earlier today, I was watching some tutoring to refresh my math skills. The videos were from Al Valencia and some students who worked out some problems! One problem, which I thought was going to be very simple, actually turned out to be troublesome because they were teaching "PEMDAS" yet did not really apply it and did not explain WHY! 19+10x7/7x3-18. It is quite troubling to know that many students are still taught incorrectly. It was finally made very clear in the first problem you worked on! Thank you so much! You are an excellent instructor!

This video is money! I always thought that the whole "PEMDAS" thing was clunky because, visually, it implies that you focus on the order of the acronym versus actually focusing on the order in which actually take place in a given expression. I always like to think of the order of operations in terms of levels; I can't get to the addition/subtraction level until I've completed the parenthesis level, exponent level, and multiplication/division level. And within each level, the operations always occur, as you have pointed out, from left to right. Anyways, I thought the video was solid and very helpful.

@@EyeIn_The_Sky I'm not missing the point. I know that you do whichever one comes first. If i thought multiplication came before division I would've put the D under the M, but as you can see they're next to each other. Same with A and S.

I learnt arithmetic ,algebra,calculus ,differential equations,even some quantum mechanics . Arithmetic was the only branch that used the obelus divison symbol. The use of the horizonal bar forced the writer to clearly state the next series of operations and if not clearly to use parentheses . Mathematical expressions should be written in such a way that one understands or arrives at the same result or conclusion whether one reads it forwards or backwards .

Dear Fort Bend tutoring, just for discussion: The parentheses represent a group with numbers as it is here but it also can contain variables with mixed operations. In the subject expression, the group has two numbers to be added but acted upon by an outside operation as it is here by the FACTOR of 2. Some see the parens as not being fully resolved until that operation is complete. Some think that the result is a value in and of itself and the group would not be satisfied (arrived at the true value) by removing the factor. This is true when DISTRIBUTING the factor across the group. e.g. One would arrive at a totally different answer if one were to distribute the values as in 6:- 4+2 (six divided by four plus two) then using PEMDAS would give us an answer of 3.5 I hope you are not suggesting that distribution cannot take place before the division operation. So simply using that primary school mnemonic is a generalization that fails in this case. It may be ok for simple math but not for more complex expressions.

This video reeeeeally helped me understand what was wrong with they way I was attempting to do my order of operations problems. I have been out of high school for many years and I am reentering college with a field of study that will require college math....after ALL THESE YEARS. I'm preparing for the PERT Test. I did well on the whole review EXCEPT the order of operations. Now I'm much more confident.

This was absolutely AWESOME!!! I've been a Math "coward" for many years and always avoided going back to school for the fear of having to do Algebra. I've never grasp the basic "formula" for algebra... and for lack of better words it's always scared the hell out of me. I certainly appreciate the "ease" of your instructions!!! THANK YOU!!!

Thank you SO MUCH for this video. I struggle with math as a college student. In all other areas I am able to get A's and B's but my major includes a ton of math and I have been terrified for this coming semester due to this. You have no idea how you have helped my mind to finally click with what has been one of the most difficult concepts for me thus far. Please continue making your videos because you truly are an amazing teacher.

YES!!! That is what I was taught in school. They told us to use Please Excuse My dear Aunt Sally and they NEVER told us we choose the one (M,D or D,M) comes first, LEFT to RIGHT. They emphasized the ditty more than the actual application of the order of operation agreement.

If you're writing by hand, I'd always recommend using a fraction bar instead of the division symbol. It works as a grouping notation, so it eliminates a lot of ambiguity.

Wow, thanks a lot for your tutoring! I've never been good at math, but I'm about to go to college and need to really develop some good math skills. I was probably taught pemdas in middle school but since I got lost in fractions I didn't retain anything further than that! This is so helpful because 1) I don't have to relearn what I was taught wrong and 2) you have explained this with clarity so I understand the operations rather than a gimmick trick! Much obliged. I get rid of the division by turning it into multiplication by a fraction, so I don't have to go left to right; I get the right answer no matter what order I multiply the numbers in. Likewise, I get rid of the subtraction by adding a negative number, so I can add the numbers in any order.

your videos are a fun review and refresher for me and reassuring that I was taught the right way (10 years ago). Your personality and voice shine and add a pleasure to the experience. Thanks I’d like to send a link to my friend (were in our 70’s) who recently expressed an interest in learning math as you are so very clear and provide side links for further exploration if/when needed but I feel might be a bit overwhelming at this point. I hesitate to do this as she felt she needed to go back to really basic arithmetic. Do you have any suggestions that I can pass on? Thanks

I was always taught this way and I have never been confused about it because it is really easy, but alot of people tend forget to do steps 3 & 4 from LEFT TO RIGHT. PEMDAS in 4 Simple Steps Step 1) Do the parentheses (brackets). Step 2) Do any exponents. Step 3) Do any Multiplication OR Division LEFT to RIGHT Step 4) Do any Addition OR Subtraction LEFT to RIGHT

That's correct! The opposite of three squared is -3² because the exponent only applies to the element directly to the left of it. To square -3, you must include the negative sign within the parentheses for the negative sign to be included in the process of squaring. Therefore, negative three squared is written as (-3)² as we are squaring both the negative sign and the number 3, not finding the opposite value of 3². Hope this helps and thanks for the comments!

Hello Daisy! Please watch our video "Solving Multi-Step Linear Equations" for the process to solving problems like this. First distribute the 5 to get 5x - 15 = 4x + 9 - x. Combine like terms gives you 5x - 15 = 3x + 9. Subtracting 3x from both sides you have a result that reads 2x -15 = 9. Add 15 to both sides and now the equation reads 2x = 24. Finally, divide both sides by 2 and the answer is x = 12.

I think it helps students to see the equation written out with the divisor under the multiplier, i.e write it as a fraction this can be then be simplified.
