A few weeks back we did an episode on how to overcome bad fit up when TIG welding roots. This week, we are doing the same, only this time we are using 6010 to run the roots in. We'll show you a good gap, a wide gap, and an insanely wide gap.

if you can stomach more bad fitups, can you do one on pipe? like, the diameter is slightly off, also the guy on the saw kinda clamped it too hard so now you have an iso standard bend and an oval pipe... and you have to make it work even though one part of the bevel is kinda too high, the other too low, and half is kinda okay but it is all wonky and whatnot. i deal with that on the regular and i would like a veteran's opinion on how to angle the arc when and where to make it look afterwards like the fitup was just dandy. edit: more tig yes. cause tig is surgical love. and if you have some stainless to do it on even better. doesnt have to be too thick either, one pass for proper root and cap? quick n dirty fab job. cause we have to make about a dozen of those before lunch.

That 1/8" 6010 75 AMP root pass was brutal, I guess the key is to just keep flicking the rod up to let the weld pool cool slightly. I'd blow it out for sure, thanks for sharing your vast knowledge bob, I really appreciate the efforts you put into sharing this free content with us all.

That's the joy of 6010. It's a fast freeze rod, so if you pull ahead a little, the pool solidifies quickly.

Once worked with a very respected pipe welder that welded so hot the rod would melt off at about 2 1/2", yet that man had a wallet full of tickets. Never could weld with that mans machine. Nice video Bob! I'll enjoy any welding video you can throw at me.

You are the man. I strive to be this good. But I did pretty well on my 6010 SMAW open groove test plates. I like the 1/8" fit myself. And the sound it makes when you keyhole, I love welding

Stick welding is much more difficult than Mig and welding up big gaps I find is very hard with stick so it was an education to see a seasoned welder battle with a big gap! Great to see the metric conversion too!. Many thanks for posting young man!

I’m learning how to weld uphill, and I run into that wider gap much more often than I’d like. I think I get nervous to step too far ahead and open up the keyhole way too much, so I probably don’t step far enough ahead. Puts tons of heat into such a small spot. Will try stepping out just a tad further 👍🏻

Mr Bob you have been more then helpful with welders trying to break in the gas and oil field. We are usually given 3 test all x-ray pass its usually a 4" sch 10 stainless steel, a 2" sch 80 to 120 carbon tig all the way out and a 2" same sch as your tig but 6010 root and 7018 fill and cap all on 6g or 6g restricted. I watch all your videos I even have notification on when your videos are uploaded. If I can make a request and im sure other pipe welders would like to see also is if you can do a stainless steel sch 10 tig pipe on a 5 or 6g position

Great video bob. I like your style . Been welding since 09 and you do bump into somr bad fit ups and you have to do what you do to keep getting a check and its definitely important on when to say no. I have learned some great tips from guys older than me and guys like you keep it real and true. Not all welding is perfect setup and fit up and that is reality that new welders could use help on. I enjoyed the bloopers take care

Man that looks like a pain. I haven't been able to properly weld a complete root pass on a 8th gap cause I couldnt tell if it was just welding reallyyy slowly or I actually wasnt doing anything besides blowing a huge hole in my plate

I've worked with bad fit-ups before with MIG. Not quite as bad as that last one, but I used basically the same technique of working from the sides, then filling in the gap. I learned that you really have to watch the heat. Too much and you end up fighting to keep the puddle intact. Too little heat gives a poor weld without the strength. The thinner the base metal, the finer the line you have to walk.

Since I don't have a DC machine, I usually prefer to run E6011. My personal favorite electrode, but a big enough charge can overload the E6010 making both electrodes interchangeable.

My fav method for wider gaps is 2 roots on the bevels (4 in total, 2 on each side) then I'll weave in my 3rd to join them for my fillers and finishing passes. Give it a shot, you should even be able to get by on a 1/4in gap with just one root on each bevel if you know how to weave in your last root correctly. I always use a crescent or Z weave for my joining root and for my finishing passes

Another nice video Bob. I really enjoyed this one. I'm like You. I don't like big gaps. I'm practicing 7016 and 7018 root at the moment because we rarely use 6010/6011 here in Europe. It's hard but I'm getting better at it.

Thanks bob for the videos. Watching a 2nd and 3rd time there still is info pouring out of all your instruction which is awesome. As a long time motorsports guy just learning to tig (always leaned on mig - and stick years ago), can you do a vid about controlling heat to get going. Practice beads going good, real joints not so much. Sure would love to take advantage of the summer class you are offering but I can't on your first go around, so hopefully that program is a success and is offered again!!! Thanks again for your efforts

on the job I had to fill a 3/4 inch gap with 3/32 rods. We were out of 1/8 and it had to be done

I hate to say it, but after years of helping people cheap out on replacing ugly holes with welds... I find that the bigger gaps aren't that bad. They take some moving, but if you're ADHD... You'll love it!😂 I guess it's a matter of necessity in being used to it and needing it done ASAP. Cheap is cheap and I learned that the day my dad came home with a new Lincoln buzz box and over 20lbs of 6011 in one size... *BIG!* Just for me and him working on his tractor attachments.

This reminds me of my very first job I got called to. A project where they had 2 massive structures 120 feet tall attached to the side of a huge 300 foot long dredging barge....There were gaps 1.5 inches wide in places! Serious safety concerns everywhere too....I was scared as hell and dumb as FK! :) Today I would just walk off a site like that...Nothing good happens on sites like that

I was showed a trick before for wide gaps like that, and the trick was actually a 1/16 6010/6011. ran on 60-70 amp, yes it smokes the rod but in my opinion it welds damn good on those wide gaps. idk I was taught big gap small rod, small gap big rod. burn it hot and it burn right in..

This is the kind of stuff you run into in the real world especially working on broken equipment. It's nothing to have a 3/4" gap to fill in a broken part which is where flux-core will definitely save you a ton of time. Fast-Freeze electrodes work but it takes forever to finish the job 😒 A "U" whip is best for filling large gaps. It focuses the heat equally on both sides unlike a "J" technique being used in this clip. Personally, I find this type of welding to be a good test because it makes you think outside the box 😉

Can you guys do a video on all of the larger sizes of rods and different types of rods. Like a full and entire comprehensive video on all of it. Rods from 8th inch to 5/16 and 1/4 inch rod. And electrodes such as 6011, 6010, 7018, 7024, 8010, 6013, 7014, 7018 AC and others I may have missed. I'm looking for a video that does a complete and entire comprehensive look at these rods and sizes and techniques used when welding with all of these rods. As well as running all of these rod types on DCEN, DCEP and AC and seeing what they can run. i.e running 7018 on AC when it's designed for DCEP and DCEN. So just seeing what they can run on. Just seeing what they can be run on if say I have a rod and I don't have a DC machine. A video showing what the beads from all of the different types of rods should and would look like. So we know what to look for. And how to make a good penetrating weld while making our bead width longer. (For non critical welds) How to repair a plate I punch a hole through that I am using for a project that isn't a critical weld. Say I don't want to get another plate and I can't grind it and I can't use a backing plate. How do I repair the hole in the metal using a welding rod? And what rod should I use? I have personally ran into the problem where I punched a hole in my material and I can't use a backing plate and I can't just cut it or grind it. Since at the point I was at I was so far into the project that it wasn't an easy spot to just grind it or use a backing plate. So I lost a lot of money on that project and scrapped it entirely. So knowing how to fix something like that would've been very helpful for me. The other thing I'm looking for is what arc length and what rod angle allows me to add more material than penetration and what angle and arc length allows me to have more penetration than weld metal? And how can I use that arc blow or force to my advantage when welding to get more or less penetration? There are a lot of questions I have, so hopefully these questions give you guys a lot of video ideas. Thanks :) This would be a video educating some home hobbyists in the unprofessional standpoint where non critical welds would be needed.

I'm not gonna say where or when for obviuos reasons but on some 30" heavy wall adding pups to cut down degree fittings we had bad fits tight n wide n lots of hi-lo. We'll come to find out forget the 5p+ and use a pipeliner 4mm 8010 it will beat that hi/lol with ease and step in the wide stuff look in thinking your gonna have to back weld guess what it was pretty slick did not back weld.we did over 500 welds of this nature pupping out mitered degree fittings in the Fab to send out to the tie in crews.no repairs and yes we were way out of procedure.

Another solid video. Everything I do is pipe related, but it should transition to flat work just the same. Most of the fitters I apprenticed under would slam everything together so it was practically touching. They’d push in a 1/8” 6010 root that most of the time was capped with a second and final fill/cap of 1/8” 7018. Most of the time we’re working a couple hundred feet from our welders so they’d do that so they can run the 6010 at the same amperage as the 7018, and obviously cut an entire pass out of the process. I’m not for or against it as so far as it is a viable process, as long as the welder is aware of the necessity to sink that root deep. We work in standard wall (sch 40) pipe and I personally do all three passes (root, fill, cap) so when I do, I gap 3/32 MAX. I don’t like chasing the keyhole and I don’t like to fiddle with my machine when I’m switching rods. Hot 6010 with a slightly tighter than “normal” gap if I get to pick.

I was taught to angle the electrode upwards when welding up, but welding with a gap is a nightmare. I keep blowing holes which I can't seem to fill, instead they get bigger and bigger. I see you angle the rod downwards instead and "drag" the bead through the gap. I've got to try that next time. Using 7016 electrodes, mostly repair work.

Your 2nd plate you did. I did a very very similar weld with the same amount of back face reinforcing and was visually failed for it. I resat my test with the amps dropped right down to 65amos and dug the rod in. Barely any keyhole around the rod but it gave a fairly flat back face. Around 2mm reinforcing. Not being negative. Not at all. But something to maybe aware of.

So, I am welding shooting targets from 1/2' armor plate bits cut from an old M57. All sorts of shapes from 4' squares to 16x3ish Cut by students! HORRIBLE! Gaps range from 0' to 1/2 inch. What I do on the bigger gaps < 5/16 is whip up and cover the walls then come down when u the world pool has cooled. or also, get a 7018 take off all the flux and use it as a filler when I come back to the weld pool. just on plates though. never on pipe.

Love when you do stick welding. Thats the only welding accesible to me. But please do some sheet metal or about 0.3-0.7cm metal welding. Maybe some tubing or squares. I always blow a hole. Doesnt matter the electrode,travel speed,amperage it always burns a hole. I would love to see a how to strike an arc video.

Could you do a video on beveling pipe by hand? Different scheds and sizes? Going from plate to pipe, getting a good bevel is harder than making the weld

What would happen if you were to say cool it down some more, run a little bit on each side then fill the root in, or run it until it gets to hot and stop for one second let it harden some, just a second, and start again and repeat over and over til you finish. What I see happening is the two walls melting down until you have a big hole and it makes sense because of how thin it is down in there where you are welding. When it is together or very close you can jump up on the shoulder of the weld area to place your heat, where it can handle the load that you are placing on it. What do you think?

great video as always...love the Tim Allen grunt by the way 🤣. the plate with the huge gap, could you run two root passes one up one side and then thr other? or would that just be opening the door for slag inclusions and lack or fusion???

We see those big gaps if not bigger daily on the shipyard you just have to bridge it and build off the bridge constantly popping off to let cool and back in for a few stitches or it’ll fall out like it did on you... it sucks

In school they will not allow me anything except 1/8 face 1/8 gap on open root stick. Hopefully I will get to try some other stuff before I finish school.

I know it's not the approved method but sometimes when people don't know how to use the torch you have to knock off the flux and use the rod like Tig but that's not like on anything pressurized or anything special kinda . nice fill on the Gap =^-^=

I was always told and taught be at 90 degrees to a little push uphill travel....are you pulling it or is that camera angle?

...Good job on a crappy fit.....! I once went for a welding test for a job on offshore oil-rig jackets (bases).... 1-1/2" wall, 7-8 foot diameter 'pipes'.......45 degree V groove with maybe a 3/4-1" wide gap.....running 5/64" NR-232 1% nickel wire.....instructor says..."That's a good fit-up around here......Stockton, Calif...1986...Platform GAIL.....550 foot long under sea....still, to this day.....largest ever built....
