I sent a preconfigured Nas drive to my sister in england, all she had to do was plug it in and plug in the network cable into her router and my synology came online and I can connect to it. Now I have offsite Geo redundant backup for cheap.
Peter, I have out of print books, LPs, and CDs. Don't ever assume you can run down to the store and replace media. Often new CDs or DVDs have been remixed, horribly, and the movies recut into new versions. There are 3 or 4 different cuts of Blade Runner and Almost Famous, and the track endings/breaks on many live music CDs have been mangled so badly that I go back to the LPs.
I have had a synology NAS for almost 10 years now. I can confirm its a very good option...... I think my next NAS will probably be a truenas box, but I can definitely recommend a snyology to the non techie folks. Its a few more dollars, but it has so many more options. FYI...... You can run home surveillance using the synology NAS. You get 2 free licenses for cameras. You have to pay for more cameras, but its not too much.
I got some new 4K cameras that combine and report as a single camera. I'm going to get the coverage off 4 cameras for free. But I will probably pay to get my other cameras up.
@@PeterC408 That would make a good video for you to post. I know that some cameras play nice with synology (and some dont). I have not personally used my synology nas as anything other than a basic nas. You could get a few videos out showing all the apps available with DSM.
I can't decide if I really want to move everything over to NAS. I feel like for the cost and convenience of smaller scale, it's difficult to beat the cloud offerings.
You really shouldn't rely on the cloud it's very dense storage meaning that it was holding many bits per cell. The fault tolerance and archival strength is very poor. We just think because it says Microsoft or AWS that it is good reliable storage, if it's cloud it's not. Better as a backup
I have. They look nice but when it comes down to investing in an external facing NAS device, it has to be secure. Security is a constant evolution. I want to go with the leader. You want a company that will be there to support the product with FW revisions so that you don't end up with a doorstop.
