I had a similar experience with Babel. The characters felt like pawns solely used to express Kuang’s ideas and to move the plot forward. I also felt like I was being force-fed the themes of the book.

I’ve read all 4 books in the series as well as the short/novella, and I enjoyed all of them, all absolutely worth reading, but none quite reached the heights of Shadow for me. That one is still my favorite. Though, to be fair, often the first in any series is my favorite book of the series. Something about that first rush of falling into a world you love that is really hard to match or even surpass, at least for me.

16:48 I have to say, I agree with you on this assessment of Babel. I enjoyed the book, and there were aspects of it that ripped me to absolute shreds. But it honestly could have been a third of the length if R.F. Kuang hadn't repeated herself so often. It felt a bit like one of those university papers with a minimum length that we didn't prepare for, so we end up thinking of different ways to say the same things and hoping no one will notice.

I really enjoyed this collective review of the books you read. I had the same thoughts while reading the summary of Babel, so I have been steering clear of that one. I out of these, I have read Vita Nostra. And I just loved ALL of the strangeness. I am sure that some of it went over my head, but that was the beauty of the book. It is meant to rope you in all of the strangeness, and the suspense of reading on trying to find out what happened next. It's like I did not understand, but understand it at the same time. Cannot wait for book 2! ✨️🖤📚

You’re so articulate and I loved hearing your thoughts on all these books! Vita Nostra is wonderful in its strange, surreal character metamorphosis and critique of academia. I had the same feelings as you about Babel. Kuang had no trust in her readers and character shifts felt so abrupt and hard to get behind. I read those two books in the reverse order that you did, and reading Babel only made me love Vita Nostra more than I did initially! 📚🖤🕯

Yes! I'm so happy someone is talking about Vita Nostra! I read it couple of months ago and still think about it sometimes. It was such a wild ride. Truly an experience. Also happy to see Night Circus and Starless Sea mentioned, they're two of my all time favorites. I read Wuthering Hights almost 10 years ago when I was getting to my 20s and loved it so much. I just loved how messed up everyone was. But I wonder if my view has changed since I enjoy different kind of books now compared to then. I guess it's time for a re-read. Oh yeah and I agree, wouldn't really call it a dark academia book either. Your copy is stunning though!

Your review of Wuthering Heights is as though you looked inside my brain and verbalized my every feeling about the darned thing. 😆 I recently finished Laertes by Carly Stevens which is a Hamlet retelling from Laertes pov, set in a 1920s dark academia setting in Paris/Denmark. As someone who read (and adored) The Secret History when you were 3, I can really recommend it 📚😊

It was the comparison with Essun that really sold me on Book Eaters 😉 I read Wuthering Heights years ago when I was trying to read a bunch of "books I ought to have read by now" and I hated it. But I also finished it. So I guess I can relate to your review that Bronte deserves some credit for inspiring such fiery hatred of characters! I scrolled through all the comments and I'm honestly kind of shocked no one mentioned The Historian!! Am I too old for this comment thread? Is it too mainstream? 😂 Seriously, though, I devoured it. It kept me awake at night. I loved it (lo these many years ago), and it definitely classes as dark academia!

📚 I read The Secret History a long time ago and it’s stuck with me over the years, searching for something similar, which is When We Were Villains (listened to is as an audiobook), all the Shakespeare vibes. I’m absolutely with you with Wuthering Heights, I really didn’t like it and I agree that it’s not Dark Academia but very Dark. I feel finally vindicated that I’m allowed to not like it and the characters. I haven’t read many of the other books mentioned but a couple of your recommendations have been added to my ever growing TBR

I’d love to see you do a part two of this video at some point. There are so many more books that could be included! Also, despite Wuthering Heights being in my DA list, because it’s appropriate classic/gothic vibes to me and I know some people love it, I frankly hated it. I read Jane Eyre first, which I did and do utterly love, and I read Wuthering Heights after thinking it would be similar and I was so deeply disappointed. 😂 📚

I only know a few people that have identical taste in novels to myself, and so far we have matched on everything! I did not enjoy Babel at all, but the hype probably did not help. I am so glad you loved Vita Nostra; the translator mentioned on Twitter that the sequel will be releasing in English in March and is already available for pre-order! I might have to give If We Were Villains a second shot because you enjoyed it so much. I got about 30 pages in and it wasn't quite vibing with it, but maybe it deserves a second chance. Great video as always! I think Name of the Wind might fit into this category as well, but it's quite the chonk of a book

Bunny has got to be one of my all time favourite novels I have read in a long time. While the story is so weird and everything feels so far removed from reality, looking deeper into the text I think its a very interesting take on mental illness or specifically schizophrenia. It is so artistically crafted that you don't need to know this or pick up on it to enjoy the novel but I still think it should be noted. The language and how it artistically depicts the environvment, the feeling frenzy and WTF, it is all just so perfect. I've never read anything like it before and I wish I could read it for the first time again!! It is most certainly a love it or hate it novel however. Can't wait to add some of these to my TBR!

I really enjoyed the books in the "His Dark Materials" series and even though they're not targeted to most of your audience. The dark academia vibe is SO GOOD! The protagonist Lyra used to live in an old college in XIX century's Oxford where she would learn about religion and stuff. Mind you, this was in the XIX century, so a lot of the ideals in these books didn't age that well, but still, the vibes and in general what it addresses are immaculate. The main premise of this book, as much as I can shorten it, is a sort of depiction of the multiverse and travelling through it with some sort of particle called Dust. Now this "Dust" thing isn't really the dust you clean off your shelf when it's cleaning day, nay nay, this Dust is the Dust that is "seen" i guess in the book in the Aurora Borealis (where you can kinda see the outlines of the other universes). It's a Fantasy book with a short romance in the end of the 2nd book/beginning of the 3rd one i believe and this kinda weirded me out: the romance is between two *children* and i think they're both around 12-14, it's not really implied (at least i didn't notice the mentioning of their ages during this part so I'm not sure) and i just didn't feel comfortable with the portraying of these *children* having desires of one another. Now this may be controversial, because i know that it's around this age that teens start really understanding and exploring what it's like being in love but i, personally, as a teenager myself, didn't feel okay with it so i just wanted to mention that and kind of warn you. Anyways, apart from that, the series is quite good and, in terms of how it's written, i think Philip Pullman is an excellent author and you should give it a try. As I've said, the vibes are IMMACULATE!

Thanks for the recommendation! As a 30 year old I feel awkward reading about teens/kids falling in love if it’s too explicit because… well, I’m an adult and it’s weird haha. I didn’t mind it when I was around the age of the characters, though! And I think it’s great to introduce (healthy) relationships to preteens/teens in age appropriate books ❤️

Thank you very much for this video! I recently read the Secret History and I was fascinated with its tone and atmosphere. Also I was very surprised to see Vita Nostra om this list! I am Russian, so I've read a couple of books by these authors and Vita Nostra is definitely the strangest of them. I can guess why the first part felt slow paced for you and it was difficult to completely engage with it at first. I think the reason is that it is very based in the reality og post-soviet countries with its things, artefacts, specific language and so on. When I started Vita Nostra I got that eerrie feeling that I've been there and seen things, it was almost dream-like. I think you might love the other fantasy novel that Maria and Sergei Dyachenko have written: the Ritual. I's an interesting take on a story of a prinsesse abducted by dragon, quite heartwarming too. I am very glad, that I've discovered your channel!

OK so first : 📖 Then : I'm so glad you reviewed those books and gave recommendations ! Most of them are on my TBR and some of them I have to wait for their translated version (since I'm French and I feel like dark academia vibes are too intense in term of vocabulary to be fully understood if I read the original version). Anyway : I read "Wuthering Heights" earlier this year I think that, as you said, it's not really dark academia-ish. The characters are not people we want to appreciate... But I feel like it's Bronte's wish to picture them as they are "Babel" and "The book eaters" are in my TBR but I'm waiting for the French edition... and "The Secret History" and "Vita Nostra" are available in French and in my TBR, patiently waiting for me to pick them up... Maybe next fall season 🤷‍♀

I first read Wuthering Heights as a senior in high school back in 92. I hated it. I thought the characters were hateful and just ridiculous. I read it again in my latter 30s to see if my mind had changed. Not really. Sometimes I feel like an island with a population of one among readers on this opinion. Always glad to hear I’m not alone. Glad to hear you loved The Secret History. I love Donna Tartt. Have you read The Goldfinch? I loved it even more. This is my first viewing of your channel. I quite enjoyed it. I feel like Donna Tartt’s book was NOT the start of Dark Academia. This is an old one, but did anyone read Down a Dark Hall by Lois Duncan? That was a great book I loved as a teen in the 80’s. Also, I LOVED The Lake of Dead Languages and Arcadia Falls by Carol Goodman more than The Secret History

The Secret History had such an impact on me and kind of altered my brain chemistry. I seldomly come across book who are stuck in my mind like this one, I can't stop thinking about it, especially how unreliable Richard is a narrator. The first time I read it, I was a little bit oblivious to be honest. I thought "omg, yeah Bunny's such an asshole, good thing he's gone." and didn't question Richard'S role in all of it that much ... but the more I think about it, the more I question everything the character's said and had done, the more fascinated I am of how many aspects and theories are in this books to be thought of and to be turned over. As a Historian and Archaeologist myself and often thought: "Is THAT how people see me??" To an extend I am, because of how much I love all that ancient stuff, reading Homer for fun and so on ... but at least I don't think I'm above everyone else because I do so 😅 and I don't murder other people for the aesthetic, of course. at least I don't know of any murders my fellow students committed.

I find if I’m struggling it helps to listen to the audiobook and read a physical copy simultaneously! But otherwise I just try to read when I’m in the mood for it and not super late or first thing in the morning. Annotating might help, too!

Excellent video as always Elizabeth. Have you read Ship of Theseus? It is not Dark Academia but the weird, dark, depressing atmosphere is there all the time! Wuthering Heights is a book that people love or hate passionately. There is no middle ground with it 🙄😍. When it was published, people hated it because for the time it was very violent so it was a completely fail for the author. 👩🏻‍🏫🖤

I'd recommand Plain Bad Heroines if you haven't already read it. It's dual time line and one of those takes places in an all girls school and is about a group of girls becoming obsessed with a book and meeting untimely ends. Plus it's queer!

I picked up Wuthering Heights at a middle school book fair when I was in 6th grade. I was so excited to read it. However, I could not get past the first few chapters because of the style of language it is written in. I would try picking it up every few years, but would get frustrated and stop. At the end of my Senior year of high school, my English teacher gave us an assignment to pick any book we wanted to read and write a book report on it. I chose Wuthering Heights because I was determined to finally read this entire novel. I had the same problem and told my teacher about it and she gave me some of the greatest advice ever. She told me to just power through and keep reading and it will eventually click. So, I did...and I finished it...and I wrote a scathing report on how horrible the "love" story was and how deplorable the main characters were. I remember liking the characters used in the framing device of the story much better, but we don't get to spend much time with them. Anyway, I remember HATING Wuthering Heights, but was proud of myself for finally getting through it. I never understood why people lauded it as such a great love story. I was excited to hear your thoughts on it, and you give such thoughtful reviews. I feel less alone now. :)

The Maidens by Alex Michaelides. I don't know of it fully qualifies as dark academy but it is a dark mystery that takes place at a university. The twist at the end surprised me even with me thinking I saw it coming.

📚 Jane Eyre is one of my top 3 favorite books. But I agree completely with you about Charlotte's sister's book, Wuthering Heights. Of course its a masterful work but I found it painfully confusing at first. Then once I figured it out, I, like you, hated the characters and their heartlessness. It probably deserves more than 3-stars if you compare it to other 3-stars you have given over the years. But man, its hard to get through, IMO. ⭐

Oh definitely! I *try* to rate books within the context of their genre and purpose so a three star contemporary romance will be a very different kind of book than a three star classic or memoir or work of literary fiction. I use the CAWPILE method to figure out my ratings and I find it helps a lot with my indecision 😂

I loved Wuthering Heights. I will definitely have to give it a re-read. You may enjoy Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë. It is dark but when it was first published it was banned for giving girls and women ideas of independence. If you like Jane Eyre you may also enjoy Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys. It is her take on Mr. Rochester's first wife before he met Jane Eyre. But I will have to see if Book Eaters is at my library to check out.

The only book from your list that I've read is The Secret History. Surprise, surprise, lol. I don't really remember the details, but I remember liking it a lot. I have Babel next to my chair, waiting to be started. I picked it up because I saw two very opposite reviews of Babel and now I have to read it for myself to form my own opinion, lol. I added The Book Eaters and Vita Nostra to my TBR though. I've never read Wuthering Heights. I've read Jane Eyre by Charlotte though and count it among my favorite books. I wish I had some dark academia to recommend. I guess I don't read a lot of novels set at college. And without the college aspect, doesn't it just become gothic? 📖

OMG I soooo agree on Babel! The characters didn't feel real, there were actually quite a bit of plot holes, and I felt like we're being force fed the author's ideas (and those ideas were quite simplified as well). As much as I loved the main idea, setting, the whole linguistics part, and the magic system, I'm so not reading anything by her again. I can think on my own, thank you 😅 Still, Babel was mostly enjoyable (when it wasn't irritating). Book eaters on the other hand ... That one was disappointing af. And The Secret History has been my all time fav for over a decade, clearly setting the standard for what I expect from the dark academia 💜

I DNF’d Babel, I loved the setting but that was it. It felt more like an academic work and the ‘fiction’ elements just weren’t really there for me. I was feeling like the only person that didn’t love it! It’s great the other people love it, but it just wasn’t for me. I may give it another go at some point in time, but I’m in no hurry to do so!

Thank You! From the start until You actually got to "Wuthering Heights" I wondered how it ended up among "dark academia". Dark, yes, but I would call it "dark romance" or just a horror story. Did I like it? Sort of, but I also sort of dislike stupid main characters, and Catherine/Cathy is not my type ... It is sad. Again I say "Norra Latin" by Sara Bergmark Elfgren, ghosts in a high school drama class ... For some reason I also started thinking of "The Silent Tower" by Barbara Hambly, dark magic in a lonely aerospace complex outside Los Angeles, with a (tall?) programmer as pov ...old and probably not DA really ... but.

I'm totally with you!!! I disliked Wuthering Heights from the start to the end, I think is a completely hopeless story, and reading again will be masochistic 😝 I realize that technically speaking is a great book, that Emily explored a lot of new techniques, but as reader, I can't stand it a second time 🤷‍♀ Love your long videos about books!!! 📚📖❤

I'm just finishing Babel so I went back to watch this video. I enjoy your commentary so much, and I've learned things about myself as a reader from listening to you. I am loving Babel and I think it's because I am so intrigued by the ideas and the magic system. I agree with you about the rather shallow characterizations but it does not bother me. I have read about half of the other books you review here. I read The Secret History when it was first published (yes, I am old!) and have to confess that I did attend the small, pretentious New England college on which it is based. And yes, it was full of rich kids (and others of us). Thanks for your thoughtful reviews

SPOILERS: My take on the constant drumming of certain points in Babel was that Robin repeatedly tried to ignore those things, gloss over them, or block them out. His initial involvement with Hermes was his fascination with Griffin/need for family/sameness. Every time Robin’s eyes were opened, he closed them and those points were made again to illustrate his eyes being forced back open in a way that helped you to feel his craving for comfort, steady lies against awful truths until the angel and devil on his shoulders are gone (Ramy & Lovell) forcing him out of his waffling moral laziness. The other characters weren’t as fleshed out because they wanted you to view the four as a unit so that the violent ripping apart of their unit would feel like a person torn into pieces, ie losing a part of yourself each time. Of course, we all wanted more Victoire, but Victiore didn’t know Victoire until she knew her own history and origins, which didn’t happen prior to Anthony. Maybe my takes are off and I’m giving authors too much credit, but that’s how I read it and I just finished it two hours ago so these are raw thoughts.

@@PlantBasedBride Highly possible! I have read highly rated books and authors and felt very much the same way. In fact, I don’t even have to read CoHo. From the reviews of the way she glosses over these bad relationships, I would be infuriated. Most domestic abusers check off enough spots on the Hare psychopathy checklist that they should not be glossed over for any reason!

I read Vita Nostra some time ago and I remember being disoriented for most of it, though I admit it was an interesting read. I read The Secret History, Babel, and Book Eaters this year and, unfortunately, all three have been terribly disappointing. Both The Secret History and Babel completely flopped for me in terms of how poorly the stories themselves are executed, especially in contrast with how much care the authors took with the academic/aesthetic aspects of these books. Book Eaters let me down mostly because, at least for me, it was completely mismarketed. Based on what I read in the blurb, I had been expecting something very different from what I actually read. It felt more like a cross between Midsommar and Handmaid´s Tale with a bit of Sophie´s Choice thrown in the mix. None of these are necessarily bad, but had I known this, I would have gone into reading it with very different expectations. Wuthering Heights is probably the best book on this list for me, though I wouldn´t describe it as dark academia. What I find fascinating about Wuthering Heights is that I have listened to the audiobook several times over the years and as I got older, my perspective on it (and on Cathy and Heathcliff) have made a complete U-turn. I used to take it for a tragic love story, but gradually, I started despising the two of them for causing so much pain to everyone around them simply because they were both too selfish and self-centered. Personally, I have yet to read a really great dark academia book. The closest one I came across would be If We Were Villains. But I do love the idea of this particular theme and I am always excited to pick up another one :)

I definitely didn’t feel the secret history (or babel) were really about the plot, but I don’t mind when books don’t have much going on in that area! I know not everyone feels the same way. I think it helped that I typically read the blurb of a book when I first add it to my list but don’t reread it until after I’m done with the book. Considering how long it takes me to read books after I add them to my TBR I’ve usually forgotten what they’re about and go in with no expectations 😂 I honestly don’t understand how people can feel Wuthering Heights is primarily a romance, or romanticize the relationships in it (not you, but the many people in general who I have heard talk about it in that way!) Sure, Heathcliff and Catherine love each other in a twisted way, but they both suck (as you pointed out) and they are the only ones to blame for their unhappiness!
