🟩 How To Breathe Before Sprinting and 400m | The Great Athlete Tip
If you're a #sprinter or #400m athlete, you probably wouldn't have thought practising how to breathe significant to your #sprinting performance. But it is fundamental. Generally athletes are consumed by the training but if you don't breathe correctly, which most humans have forgotten how to do, then you are trying to #runfaster with "the handbrake on". You're making life very tough for yourself and increasing the chances of injury. Learning how to breathe is one of the most valuable things you can do to sprint faster becaus e it allows you to get into proper relaxation for sprinting. There are things that are so simple that we think we do automatically and, because of that, we think we do them proficiently. One example is breathing and, of course, it's something we do 24/7. And again because we do it all the time, we think we have it nailed. Not so. Nearly all of us are just breathing to survive and not breathing to perform. The world puts various pressures on us all the time. The fight or flight state is common ground for a human being trying to get ahead in this hectic world. This all creates chronic stress on our body and our bodies' reaction to stress is for shallow and quick breathing. And that includes athletes and sprinters. As an athlete, you live in the same world as the rest of us. High level fitness, unfortunately, cannot save you from stress - not at the level it is today. Additionally, because of insufficient recovery and over training (something that is pretty much present in ALL athletes), stress levels are rising and shallow and quick breathing are more extreme and common place. The problem can go to muscular level as well. To not breathe well can first cause dysfunction in your hip muscles and compromise important muscle groups like glutes. Deep breathing should encourage the diaphragm to engage with the psoas muscle. The psoas is an important hip flexor but is also a messenger to the hips. Shallow breathing will not engage with the psoas which means other muscles will take over causing muscle overuse, tightness and injury.
So, in a nutshell, if you don't breathe correctly, you weaken your hips and raise the chances of injury.
To really make the most of the potential as an athlete, you must learn to breathe well. At this present time, there is precious little discussion on this and your coach is likely unaware of it's significance.

This video will show you how to breathe correctly. After learning how to do this, you are likely to feel and see moderate changes in flexibility in the hips and shoulders and also feel relaxed and energised.
Without learning this very basic skill (and it has now become a skill due to its scarcity) you will always compromise your training and competition and also raise chances of injury.

Hold the abs in place and breathe in to the diaphragm so.the diaphragm expands 360 against the abs this will strengthen the breathing muscles .The stronger the breathing muscles become the more air can be taken In and compressed by those muscles.

Mate, I'm going to be checking this out next time I go hill training here in Devon. We have loads of great hills and I have been working really hard to get good form. Think this might be the final and most important piece in the jigsaw to help me get my form as good as possible. Great vid. Thanks for sharing the knowledge.

Great stuff. Thanks for the comment and you re sure to benefit from it. Just keep persisting with it. Allow the breath to do its job and relax after each one. One other thing. Don t think of it as the final piece of the jigsaw as there is no such thing in this process. It is indeed important part that will take you to a new level in your running.

@@RelaxedSprinting Thanks for that. I understand, not the final piece, of course, but a very important missing piece for me. Very much appreciated advise. How is that muscle below the diaphragm spelt? Soers? Surse? I would like to find out more. Thanks!

Whatever suits you. However the exhalation is where the relaxation happens. So maybe an extended exhalation may work best.

if your chest DOESN"T rise you are not using your full lung capacity

That maybe true in some cases but for most people, they breathe purely into their chest and do not breathe into their bellys and for optimal hip function and relaxation, diaphragmatic breathing is a necessary skill.
