I like the process but I would say trying the measure rotational torque and tighten the pinion nut to the same bearings preload. Not measure with a depth gauge.
Originally it came from a husky extension set. I never used it till I was under a truck and asked Josh for a "10mm on an extension". I heard them laugh and I got handed it on an impact. It's been a meme ever since. It's actually really handy when taking the triples off Todds race truck.
