This Ford Escape was towed in for a no start. So here a quick video to pin point the problem along with how to replace the ignition housing without removing the steering wheel.

Your video is dead on fantastic. You covered every single step. I'm a 69 yr old woman and you made it easy to replace the housing on my 2011 Ford Escape. ( My husband was pretty proud of me too!) It saved me probably about $600 at the dealership. I didn't have to remove the airbag either which I absolutely did not want to do! I will look to your videos 1st for any other problems I have with my vehicle and tell others about "NoNonsenseKnowHow" Thanks so much.

I just bought a 2008 Ford escape hybrid for 1500 bucks looking through the receipts in the glove compartment it had been in the shop multiple times for a no start condition. The guy that towed it to my house said he has towed this car at least seven times. After some research and some basic countryman knowledge and old-timer skills. I did the first thing you do when there’s any electronica problem on any vehicle. This is what we did in the good old days boys and this is what everybody should do now. First thing you do is make sure the ground from your battery to the frame is excellent. That means disconnect the bolt that attaches to the frame of the vehicle and make sure it is polished and clean and that ground cable from the 12 V battery is getting an excellent connection. Once I did this all the codes disappeared the mysteriously problem vanished. Can you believe it now I have a beautiful Ford escape hybrid that I got for 1500 bucks that runs like a dream. Do not focus on the mysteriously hybrid battery issues that cost thousands of dollars start with the cheapest easiest thing to do every single timeOn every car. Any electrical problem start with your ground. All these cars just like in the good all days need a good solid ground to start.

This is the best video on the replacement of ignition collar. I just completed the installation of ignition collar on my 2009 Ford Escape LTD with v6. Follow Chris's advice. Beware there are 4 wiring harnesses that have to be disconnected and reinstall. Also beware the new collar come with the ignition switch so the new unit does not look like the old one. The chisel trick works great on security bolt, I had to chisel it several times to get "hand loose". Trickiest part is getting the 5.5mm bolt in front of the ignition key out and back in the 1/4" ratchet with swivel does the trick (this is the only reason I see to pull the steering wheel). It is better to align the bottom and ignition 5.5mm bolts first on reassembly then the top and finally security bolt. I appreciate this video so much I left him a little $ thanks. This saved me big time!

OMG!! I cannot thank you enough!! This video saved me time from having to find something to take the steering wheel off and all that. It took me a little while because I didnt have the swivel head but my landlord helped come up with another solution to get the bolt out in that tiny area. Then I couldnt get it to line up with the wipers/signal. BUT I got it on!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO!!!!!!! My mom couldnt get it to start before but I always could. Now she can too!!

Thx! VERY MUCH!!! Took me a lot longer than it should have. 😳. About three hours. You almost have to be a contortionist to get some of screws back in. One trick I discovered is putting a 5.5 mm on an allen wrench to remove/reinstall the screws especially the one on the right side of the steering wheel if you don't have a wobble.

THIS IS THE ONE. I've watched a few dozen of RU-vid Ford Escape ignition collar replace videos. Had me with the chisel trick. I used a Chinesium Harborfreight screwdriver sharpened on the driveway. Plus no airbag or clock spring removal. I just fixed my 2008 Mazda Tribute. (rebadged Ford Escape) Only suggestion I can add, is go to the hardware store, buy a 8x125 "hex head" bolt rather than use the "security" torque break-off bolt. Just in case ... Ain't nobody gonna go to steal an 14 year old Ford Escape. THANKS for the video.

Great video! Just replace the housing on our 2010 Ford Focus and ignition works like a charm. I initially followed other videos about replacing the ignition switch but the problem was still there. Your video explained everything in great detail and step-by-step instructions. The entire housing cost me $120 at a local auto parts store. It took me 2 hours to replace. The trickiest part for me was getting that one 5.5 mm bolt out above the key housing (8:24) , had to make a trip to the hardware store to get a swivel adapter. Thanks a bunch, really helpful.
@mikeg_123
@mikeg_123 2 года назад
I was going to throw an ignition switch at the problem also. I was watching another channel and he also mentioned that it is not always the ignition switch but he didn't show the symptom of a bad housing like this video showed. Nice tip about the swivel adapter.

Great video Chris! You just saved me $300 and a lot of unnecessary hassle. The Mercury dealership wanted $125 just to diagnose the problem (which I already knew what it was having replaced the ignition switch to no avail and seeing your video). The local car shop wanted $400 to replace the unit. I purchased one on Amazon for $90 and had this fixed in a little more than an hour. I purchased a swivel adapter set from Harbor Freight for $8 and a small cold chisel at the Depot for $5 and it made the job much easier. Also didn't have to remove the steering wheel as suggested on other videos. Thanks again and bravo!

Great video! I liked that I didn't have to pull off the steering wheel like a different video I watched on this said to do. The part for my vehicle only cost me $45 on Amazon compared to the big box store price of $189. I did find that you can simply use a screwdriver and hammer instead of the cold chisel to remove the headless bolt. It took me about an hour and a half to do. Thanks for saving me some money. I enjoy all these do it yourself video's that save me money!

THANK YOU!! My 2008 Ford Escape has had ignition issues for over a year that have gotten progressively worse. I would push my key in and wiggle it around to start it, but eventually even that stopped working. All the other videos on youtube wanted me to take apart the whole steering wheel, which requires specialized tools, and start with replacing the whole ignition module rather than just the ignition switch. I was about to give up until I saw your video, and replaced the switch for a new one for $45. You saved me $500!

Just wanted to add another thank you... today (1 year later) the new switch failed, and this time it failed within a day. I was stuck in a Target parking lot. I looked up your video again in my history to remember what size socket I need (5.5), walked across the street to Home Depot, got it all open and started my car with a screwdriver. The part is under warranty so I'm getting a free replacement tomorrow. Too bad the part is so prone to breaking, but at least it's an easy fix!

Praise praise praise 100% to your video thank you for your detailed step-by-step instructions on how to replace the ignition lock mechanism on my 2012 Ford escape it seemed very daunting and overwhelming being a novice mechanic but selling parts and service for over 25 years the hardest part for me was getting the lock cylinder out of the housing and lining up the lock cylinder back in the new housing but my application was almost a carbon copy to this video again thank you for posting PS do not be cheap and get one from the junkyard it will burn you as those lock mechanisms could be worn as well I have a friend at Ford and he gave me his employee price at $100 well worth it to have my vehicle start on demand every time cheers

Great job on this video. It made it very easy. Thank you. Comments: For those without a 5.5 mm metric socket, 7/32 works. Another comment: turn the "D" connector in the ignition housing to match the lock cylinder. The lock cylinder must go into the new housing the way it came out of the old housing.

Good stuff man👍 Anyone doubting if this works.. I can tell you 100% this works. I just did it today and only had to play with putting the lock cylinder into the new assembly.. But the whole thing took about 2.5 hrs.. Not bad considering that I'm not a mechanic 😊 For the last few weeks, I was starting my car with a screwdriver and now.. It works better than it did when I bought the car. When I bought it.. the car had 20,000k..Now it has 267k...Solid fix🙌

Just did this today. Thank you so much for this! All other videos had the steering wheel pulled off and yours saved so much time. To any future people doing this: be sure you either use a swivel adapter or a 1/4” socket wrench for the 3rd screw on the right side. It’s a tight fit with the wheel on. Overall took around an hour and saved about $500 (most places are charging $550-$650 to do this!)

Awesome, man. The only issue I had was, the cylinder would not seat in the replacement housing, initially. I had to remove the switch and have a helper turn the shaft counterclockwise a little and then it went into place. Thanks, bud! {subscribed!}

Thank you for this video. The mechanic nearby was hyping up the issue telling me it was gonna be easy $400 fix. Now I see this is apparently a known problem with the model of vehicle I have and I hope others do check this out as well
