After this game, Brett Favre really seemed destined to win a 2nd Super Bowl in 2 weeks and maybe a few more. He was the golden boy of the NFL.

No Jerry Rice + a banged Garrison Hearst to keep Favre off the field some really doomed the 49ers in this one. That JJ Stokes 1-foot in touchdown where he was obviously forced out, as well as the clear fumble by Dorsey Levens that was ruled down, were absolute game-changers that prevented the 49ers from having a real shot in this one, despite the 2 key injuries.

@@homer9868 True, true. The Packers still got several more huge breaks in their 96-98 showdowns overall, whether I'd be w/ injuries, game-changing calls (including in the regular season to decide home field advantage), free agency, or America's love affair w/ Brett Favre that was out-of-this-world in the mid 90s to early 00s. Also, the 97 loss hurt the most, because San Francisco had secured home field advantage throughout the NFC playoffs, acquired Garrison Hearst to be ready to dominate the Packers w/ balance, like the Cowboys had, would've crushed the Broncos in the Super Bowl, not 55-10 like in 89, but something like 27-14 IMO.

As a 49ers fan, I used to hate the early 90's Cowboys because they owned us, but we eventually got over the hump and owned them from 1994-97. But We never got over the hump vs GB. They fucking owned us and our only win (1998 playoffs) was due to a terrible non call we got in our favor. But We seem to own the Packers now. Since 2012, the 49ers are 5-2 vs GB including 3 times in the playoffs.

Exactly. As a 49ers fan I have said this for years and people want to argue with me about it and use the "we didnt have a running game" excuse. Steve would have won the 49ers the Super Bowl in 1990 if not for the Roger Craig fumble. He also helped Montana by letting the 49ers rest him a few games a year and giving him some extra motivation to elevate his game.

@bobross1550 3 года назад
I feel the same way. I live in Steeler country and it was like Young turned into Kordell Stewart when the playoffs started. Run run run around fling it somewhere and hope for the best. While Favre just mowed them down. Even in 98 when they won, watch the pass right before The Catch II. It's on the youtube clip. Total bonehead throw into double coverage, almost intercepted, and even if Stokes caught it he would've been tackled in-bounds and the game would have been over. He was / is extremely intelligent but it didn't exactly translate to the football field sometimes.
@christophersantiago171

I kept saying that during the Debate of Montana vs Young on First Take and I said that Young had a stacked WR core during the late 90's T.O, Rice, and Stokes and Young played like crap after 94. Montana only had Rice and Taylor and yes a stacked Defense but he won 4 SuperBowls as for Young during the 90's he recorded 12-4 and 13-3 records on and on but once Green Bay came to town it was a Kryptonite except for 98 but the 49ers in 97 were a 13-3 offensive juggernaut they even beat the eventual SuperBowl Champ Denver Broncos on MNF but Young couldn't do anything after 94 and all that talent went south after Young Retired

@@jackduncan5442 I was/am a fan of Young but I agree that he didn't always play the best in championship games. Even in '94, he and the 49ers were lucky to get past the Cowboys in the NFCCG. Chris Boniol's missed FG in the second quarter; Dallas failing to run out the clock before the half; Deion's pass interference on Michael Irvin that wasn't called. All that being said, Young had a magical season in '94. He was unreal in SB 29 (6 TD passes).

If J.J. Stokes keeps would have had the time to drag that right foot inbounds in the end zone at 2:42 and the refs would have done their job and awarded a fumble recovery to LB Gary Plummer at 3:21 this game would have had a totally different outcome or complexion. Stokes' TD catch and that 23-yard fumble recovery for a TD by Plummer and the Niners would have been ahead 17-13 early in the third quarter 🤬😯.

This game was really no contest at all. 49ers did have a solid W that season when they beat the Super Bowl champion Broncos on MNF but overall they were up there with the '99 Jaguars in terms of playing a ridiculously weak schedule (2-2 against playoff teams). The Packers were much more battle tested (8-1 against playoff teams) and were clearly the vastly superior team.

The next lesson on Championship Sunday we head out West to the Bay Area in the NFC of the Packers and 49ers late on FOX is : Silence of The Niners 🧀🧀🧀😊😊🏈. The Packers had the Niners number in the playoffs twice espically facing Mike Holmgren being a former corrdinator for the Niners in the dynasty hey days of the 80's, as for the Niners being undefeated at home 9-0 with a win last week beating the Vikings with a dangerous offense and defense without Jerry Rice but Garrison Hearst back from injury meet thier demise as a magical season at 3.com Park turns into a funeral parlor espically being 1-3 in NFC Championship games at the Stick. The Packers hit first with a Farve pass to Robert Brooks but in the red zone the Niners hold them to a FG thanks to William Henderson drops it then Kevin Greene and Brett Favre get in each other skin as Greene sacks him " Yeah, Im gonna get you, hell yes !! 😁, and Rod Woodson showing some guts playing with an injured calf muscle. Steve Young completed 10 straight passes but he becomes Victim #11 with an INT from Eugene Robinson against the stingy defense of the regining champs, then Farve hits Antonio Freeman for a TD beating Marquez Pope and Merton Hanks and the secondary and Freeman beat the Rabbi,Cardinal and Pope lol 😋 on that play and its 10-0 then Farve strikes again with a pass to Freeman and a run by Dorsey Levens 11 yard run then a bullshit grounding call on Green Bay and Homlgren is pissed, then Niners retaliate with a drive starting with a pass to Terrell Owens 48 yards from Young then J.J. Stokes is out of bounds instead a TD alas he was pushed out and another FG and 10-3 , then Farve and Freeman connection is working with another pass and a Ryan Longwell FG as its 13-3,( Packers offense last 2 min's of 7 TD's and 7 FG's in 1st half in 1997 ), but 2nd half as the rain coming down 🌧🌧🌧 as it wasnt Mary J. Blige singing " Rainy Dayz" , the Niners defense comes out gunning as Lee Woodell decks Henderson but not ruled a fumble, then the Cheeseheads blitz Young with a sack then Levens keeps running in the rain burning Niners in the mud as Green Bay is pumped up as Jerry Rice has that look on the sidelines of " Man, Oh Man, wish i was in there" 😑. But on 4th down the Niners feel the pressure with another sack on Young and Levens says " Ching-Ching" with a TD as he the 1st 100 rusher vs. the Niners, but with time running out 23-3, Niners get a kickoff punt return by Chuck Levy 95 yards ( 1st Touchdown punt return in Championship games of the Niners ) , to put them back in the game 23-10 still down 2 scores, but little too late as The Niners are silenced and Brent Jones says goodbye as he on his way to retirement as him and Rice console each other, and Rod Woodson would be gone as William Floyd as the Niners are 1-3 in last 4 Home Championship games and this was the final time the Niners had the #1 seed at Candlestick. While Homlgren and Farve and company celebrate as NFC Champs and heading to Super Bowl 32 to defend thier title with the " Mile High No Limit Soilders " of the Broncos as Packers going back to the Super Bowl for the 4th time in franchise history and Homlgren his 3rd consecutive win against the Niners......but in 1998 it be Payback for one team as a future hall of famer would make his mark. End of Lesson ( Pat Summerall and John Madden, Ron Pitts on the call on this game 4:00 😊😊🧀🧀) .Class Note: Packers no turnovers in this game in the last 3 games against the Niners the Packers in the playoffs forced 11.1 turnovers , Steve Young is 1-3 in NFC Championship games , Farve had 222 yards 16-27 ,Levens had 114 rushing yards and a TD. To Homlgren it was " Poetic Justice" playing the Niners and Steve. Merucci 1st home loss as 1st year 49ers coach, and like he said " It was a heck of a ride"😊......but all and out a failure no matter if you clinch the division title and have the best record in the league, class if you dont make to the Holyest Day of Men in the Super Bowl, youre season is failure 110% . As for William Floyd he would become a Carolina Panther in 1998, along with Kevin Greene making his return, as for Rod Woodson he would become a Baltimore Raven in 1998 ( not good for Steeler Nation lol ) .

Antonio Freeman running away from defenders, making em miss, and scoring the TD off of YAC. When you watch these full games, the color commentators always talk about how he wasn't the fastest receiver, but IMO he always had great football speed. Maybe he doesn't wow you in a 40, but in the 2nd half of a big game when everyone's getting tired, he would make the big plays and outrun supposedly faster players.
