That is such a well thought out design. I don't know if you're a Julie Warren fan or not but your designs are every bit as interesting and easy to follow. I was a bit sad when the Homestead project was over. Well, here you are Penny, making more beautiful things and sharing your talent with us. I hope you know how appreciated you are :)

Awe! Thank you so much! I am a HUGE Julie Warren fan and she was a big inspiration for me when I decided to start my own channel. I’m glad you liked the Homestead House. I was also a little sad to have it end. It was such a labour of love for me! Thanks again for the kind words! 💚

Penny, you are the best teacher! I love that you give the thicknesses of the woods, so helpful. But, what kinds of woods did you use, please? Basswood, balsa, plywood, something else? I am a novice builder of minis, so i need to be told every little thing, sorry. Thanks.
@littlebylittledollhouseminis
@littlebylittledollhouseminis 10 месяцев назад
Thank you so much Denise! The short answer is Basswood. Depending on where you live it is the easier to find and relatively inexpensive. It cuts well and has a nice wood grain if you are staining the piece. There is another type that I love called Obeche. It has a beautiful grain and is really nice to work with. The problem is that I can’t source it locally and have to ship it from the UK. That makes it expensive and not very practical. (If you want Julie Warren fro Little Bits and Pieces, she uses this wood) I try and stay away from Balsa because it find it very soft and it breaks very easy. That’s just my personal opinion of course! Thank you for tuning in!😁

@@littlebylittledollhouseminis Thanks! I have a problem sourcing thin wood for crafts that I can cut with just hand tools - there is only a Hobby Lobby here in the desert southwest, and they have next to nothing that is useful. I found some small plywood planks there in a package, but they turned out to be mostly warped. I guess I will have to go the mail-order route and suffer shipping charges. Julie Warren is one of my favs on RU-vid too. Thanks again, please keep sharing your talents with us!

@@deniselocke559 Julie sells wood from her Etsy shop for a good price and doesn’t gouge people on shipping costs. The link for her Etsy shop is on her RU-vid channel, in the about tab. An alternative to wood is Chip board which you can order on Amazon and comes in various widths. I often use that if I intend to paint the piece. You honestly can’t tell the difference once it is painted. It’s also cheaper than wood!

Mach weiter so du bist spitze. ❤

Hi Heather! Thank you for your question! So I also live in Canada and I can tell you that sourcing materials here is a challenge! Michaels used to carry Craft Plywood (Bass wood) in 4” x 24” sheets. They stopped carrying it about 2 years ago (at lease here in Alberta) which made my life as a miniaturist really hard. I do not have any stores in this area that carry it anymore so buying local is not an option for me. If you have smaller privately owned craft stores in your area, you may be able to find some of the wood there. Places that specialize in train models may carry it. Ordering online: I have ordered the wood from Amazon in past but found that the wood was so warped that it was almost unusable. I have ordered it from Julie Warren (Little Bits and Pieces). She has an Etsy store linked on her channel and she carries the wood and ships to Canada. The quality is really good, I have never had a warped piece, and the shipping is very reasonable. She sells a couple different kinds of wood like Basswood, and Obeche, which is my favourite. She also sells in different thicknesses (1/16” and 3/32”). I was ordering from her for a while and then finally decided to take a little road trip into the US. I live only a couple hours from the border so travelled down to Great Falls Montana. The Hobby Lobby in the US carries ALL the wood, and I honestly cleaned them out! I have enough wood supply right now to probably last me a couple years and it was well worth the trip. I don’t know how close you are to the border, or if that is an option, but for me, it was the best solution all around. (They do not ship to Canada unfortunately) Type of Wood: I usually use Basswood in either 3/32” or 1/16” thickness. Hobby Lobby sells a 4” x 24” piece of the wood for about $2.99 a sheet so cost wise, it is reasonable. A good alternative to wood is to use Chip Board. You can buy a package of 25 or 50 pieces (8.5 x 11”) from Amazon. It works out to be about $1.00 a sheet but will last you a fairly long time. It’s cheaper than wood! If you are painting it, or covering it with the vinyl, you can’t tell the difference. The only downside is that there is no wood grain in the chip board so staining doesn’t work as well. Other than the wood, a good wood glue like Gorilla glue, a metal ruler and a sharp blade (exacto knife) are a great start. I get a lot of supplies like clamps, sandpaper, and even wood dowels from the Dollarama. All of the measurements for my pieces are included in the description box for that video. I also include the type of wood I have used in the description. Please reach out any time if you have any more questions. I am happy to help if I can 😁.Have fun with your build and thanks for watching!💚
