Seriously he is literally the best under 20 Swedish player of all time, lead the entire league in scoring WITH the break for world juniors and currently has 17 points in 12 games in the playoffs.
I disagree, Tolvanen broke records in the Khl and is the best under 20 year old who has ever played there. Pettersson played on one of the best teams in the Shl. Shl is a lot weaker league than the Khl and it's a well known fact. I have seen them both play many times and Tolvanen has literally been in almost every single one of them the best player on the ice. While Pettersson can put up points and a good highlight reel, he is not as consistent as Tolvanen
Ville Halttu Main question:Did Tolvanen hit puberty early??...wich I think he did. Pettersson was late. The difference is usually vital how they develop later. "A late bloomer" has a much longer developing curve. If Tolvanen was early and Pettersson is late...Elias Pettersson potential is bigger.
You could definitely make that argument. For me Casey Mittelstadt has skill that you don't find very often. He absolutely dominates the ice. I like his size too. But Pettersson is up there. It's kind of a crap shoot right now.
Agreed, we wont know until next season, just seeing Pettersson break Kent Nilsson adn Peter Forsbergs SHL records sealed the deal for me. they both had dominating world juniors and i am also a biased canucks fan. lol
Elias Pettersson will be huge. He has everything. He hit puberty late. 188 cm and 75 kg! Another 20kg in a couple of years and he'll be a superstar. His stats as a junior in the senior leuge (SHL) is the best ever in Sweden. Kent Nilsson is second. Peter Forsberg is 3rd. Sedins are 4th and 5th. He has EVERYTHING... Remember that word!
Playing well on a massive European ice surface does not mean his game will translate to the NHL quickly or at all for that matter. I mean, does anyone even remember who Kent Nilsson was? Sure, Nilsson had 100 point seasons in the NHL in the 80's, but almost anybody could score 100 points in the 80's. The Sedins took like 5-6 years to become superstars in the NHL, and I think the same will be true for Pettersson. Scoring points on giant ice surfaces means nothing when you're heading to the NHL.
Good video man! Follow up with 11-20 Curious of your thoughts on Filip Chytil or Lias Andersson who has the higher upside. I had the pleasure of watching Makar play against QU this year in the NCAA. That kid will have a long NHL career!
As a Sabres fan, I am glad to see Mittelstadt on this list. Did not expect him to be number one. Don't know if that is fair either. I think I'd rather have Petterson, Tolvanen, maybe Kaprizov, but he is a couple years older
Sick video man, nice to get a refresher. Hahah gave you a like before I saw the tank at #1 glad he fell to my boys! But I see the argument for Petterson. Damnn
Robert Thomas should be above Jordan Kyrou. Kyrou is a megaboom or bust prospect. Power forward is certainly not how he is described either. Plus he will be a winger in the NHL. Thomas is a future #1 or high end #2 center who could have very well played in the NHL last season. You can ask anyone who covers the Blues, myself included, clearly, that Thomas, not Kyrou is the better prospect.
Yeah we'll have to wait and see, but as of now Mittelstadt is behind Pettersson. This could change, of course. Don't forget that Casey's league is a lot easier to rack up points. 30 points in 34 games in the Big 10 NCAA league nets you a conversion factor of 10 "NHL points" in 34 games. Elias Pettersson scored 56 points in 44 regular season games, and 19 points in 13 games in the playoffs. This is 75 points in 57 games, which converts to 44 "NHL points" in 57 games. These are fairly sturdy conversions used by the NHL to project success in young players and there is no better alternative right now to predict future production. As you can see, Casey nets about a 30% efficiency, with Pettersson hovering around the 77% efficiency mark. (I rounded Casey up, and Pettersson down). In the last 5 years or more, only McDavid and Matthews has put up a higher "production equivalency" than Elias Pettersson.
While watching this, I thought you were insane for not having Mittelstadt on this list. Then I got to 1. Well placed. He will be better than Pettersson, 100%.
Elias Pettersson might be the best player in the world not playing in the NHL right now. Eeli Tolvanen is an absolute stud and I cant believe Nashville was able to land him at #30. Mittelstadt looks like he could be a real solid player at the NHL level. Unfortunately for him he was drafted by the Sabres and they will find a way to fuck it up
I honestly laugh at this. Pettersson at #3? The kid broke the SHL records for points by a U20 player in the regular season and regular season and playoffs combined. Also, how at least one of Olli Juolevi, Adam Gaudette, Jonathan Dahlén, and Cody Glass aren't on here is absolutely beyond me.
I agree with #1 @ 5:11 *_Casey Mittelstadt_* 8th overall pick for *_Buffalo Sabers_* But #2 should be @ 1:51 *_Cale Makar_* 4th overall pick for *_Colorado Avalanche_* FYI: I'm a know-nothing NOOB, so I'm just going off the short clips of their play-styles. To me, College & Minor-League stats don't mean shit... For long-term bets, I put all my stock in value (natural talent & actual skill).
Blake Bitz Nylander is nowhere near as developed as every player on this list. I’m beginning to think he’s a bust. He hasn’t progressed much either. I was pretty pissed when we drafted him because Buffalo’s Defense is terrible and inconsistent. I really wanted Juolevi or Bean that year.
You from Victoria? I watched Joe grow up playing in the W but he miles away from a list like this. He has a chance to make the NHL as a small d man in the Detroit system, prob will take awhile tho.
He did get 5 games, 3 assists and plus 5! Atta boy Joe! However his numbers in the AHL for the season do not look nearly as good, 5 games 3 goals and 12 points with a -10. He is filling out a bit at 180 lbs still just 5'8. He took a big jump in his 3rd season in the W so maybe he will do the same thing in the A and see steady nhl time at 24... I still suspect he will be 27~ if/when he makes it... Altho he wasn't supposed to be such a stud for the Royals.
Don't know about mittldstat. I feel his stock gets big cause if the world juniors. Not even a point per game in college and there's been other rookies that are an above point per game that made the NHL that don't get much exposure like connor boeser keller
Totally agree, Boeser had 60 points in 42 games his Freshmen year, and at the time he probably wasn't even considered a top 5 prospect outside the NHL. Definitely seems to be a recency bias with the world juniors.
Dude, as I see it, he projects as a solid bottom six forward. Gritty, hard worker, but not special talent. He doesn't look any better than JT Miller, who was bigger and a better skater. They compare him to Stepan, difference is Stepan was a value pick as a 2nd rounder. At #7 overall you'd like a prospect with more upside. Very mature, instant nhler, but projects as a 12-15 goal, 25-30 assist type of player. You take him over Mittlestat, who projects much higher? Hey, I hope I'm wrong, but I can't remember the last time my rangers drafted a prospect with high end scoring talent, not since Alex Kovalev!
