came here to say that! Deathnote was so good. AFAIK Misa only wears it that one time, but the scene and her song are so iconic and tragic, that it stuck with me forever
I always recommend Kuroshitsuji (Black Butler)! It's set in a Victorian time period, and Elizabeth wears Lolita style. The main character, Ciel, also wears very obviously Ouji style too, since it's so heavily Victorian inspired.
The most shocking thing I learned here is that Tomoyo has been renamed Madison in the english dub... I know the dubs are often horribly localized and strip characters of important parts of their identity but changing names starts to be ridiculous specially when she's the most traditionally japanese looking character out of the main cast. (Edited: stocking in panty&stocking seems like a gothic lolita even though the series itself doesnt fall to the lolita aesthetic category so much. And its a rare case of perfect english dub that might be even better than the japanese. Its a comedy with bit offensive humour since it parodies american cartoons but its really well made, powerpuff girl- gyaru and gothic lolita making a lot of chaos while hunting demons.)
I was so confused when she said Madison because I always known her as Tomoyo. I used to watch Cardcaptors as a child and in the Spanish dub her name wasn’t changed.
It’s a manga and not an anime but my favourite example of lolita in media is Cat Street. It’s a manga about outcasts finding a home together, and the lolita character has an arc about wearing the fashion and how it impacts her life, and she makes her own clothes! It’s a relatively short manga and very emotional
rozen maiden was actually my intro to lolita fashion in like 2006 so I'm glad to see it mentioned a little haha!! I remember so specifically seeing clips of it and not being able to find any subbed episodes and being so Mystified by the fashion and the inability to understand the story. that's how I ended up in bodyline dresses in middle school with No blouse it was such a mess (I got better don't worry)
Everytime I think lolita in anime I think of Tuesday from Carole & Tuesday bc she is done so well and it's not what defines her as a person but definitely fits the music she makes! Also the outfit changes are SOOO GOOD!!
Sakura from Cardcaptor Sakura has actually worn lolita!! The Clamp group collaborated with Baby the Stars Shine Bright to design and create a whole dress line!
I love Paradise Kiss! Some of the plot went a bit over my head when I was younger, but I rewatched it when I was around the same age as the characters and the themes really spoke to me. Its a really good coming of age story for teenage girls/young women.
Mai from Nana was the first lolita in Anime I ever recognized as an actual lolita! We looooove punk lol Great video! I may have fangirled when I saw a coord of mine in the beginning from the lovelylor hashtag mention
wowowow i never considered tomoyo as a lolita wearer, but ur SO right!!! i always thought she was SO stylish. cardcaptor sakura is one of my fav animes...
because I first watched it as a kid, I never thought about it either until I rewatched it as an adult and thought wait she is literally me hahah except that I can't sew
Aikatsu was my introduction to lolita at age 14. I was obsessed with Angely Sugar, and it's confirmed that it was highly inspired and based on Angelic Pretty
@@LovelyLor DEFINITELY REWATCH THEM!!! Rozen Maiden is especially awesome, but Gosick is perfect for a sweet evening with a cozy sweater and some warm tea ❤️
@@LovelyLor Rozen Maiden had a collab with the brand Innocent World a few years back. While the basic selling pictures look really plain, the quality of fabric and outfits put together with them are very lovely.
xxxHolic is one of my all time faves! I feel it blends dark themes and comedy really well, without it being "dark humour". The comedy still feels light and balances out the darker stuff perfectly for me ❤️
For fans of Ai Yazawa's work, I'd recommend Gokinjo Monogatari (or Neighbourhood Story) which is another series she did! It's an indirect sequel to Paradise Kiss from the 90s, and one of the main cast, P-Chan, wears lolita! It's super 90s and old school lolita and is amazing inspiration for us who like the older looks!!
Pandora Hearts was my introduction to lolita fashion as a young person!! It's a psychological mystery shonen with lots twists and turns and also beautiful character and environment designs. the whole aesthetic is very victorian and rococo inspired! =)
Also notable is The Mystic Archives of Dantalian, which was a collaboration with BTSSB and Novala Takemoto, who composed the lyrics for the closing song. I believe that BTSSB provided the live-action video used in the closing, too. It came out the same year as Gosick, and often gets overlooked next to it since both feature a gothic lolita who is closely attached to a library and has a young man as a companion. Of the two, I prefer Dalian's personality, myself, but both she and Victorique are fairly prickly, or "tsundere", types.
I've been waiting for you to do this video for practically YEARS at this point, and seeing it in my notifications and seeing a character from my favorite anime (Artiswitch) in the thumbnail absolutely made my day.
I’ve found that a lot of magical girls are inspired by lolita fashion, and that is mostly the type of anime I watch lol. I see you’re a fan of Aikatsu, and I have 2 other recommendations based on that: ~Pretty Series~ (Consists of Pretty Rhythm, Pripara, Kiratto Prichan, Waccha Primagi, and King of Prism) An idol dress-up anime with new leads every year, and every few years they rebrand with a new name and story mechanics ~Precure~ (Short for Pretty Cure, no relation to Pretty Series) A magical girl anime with a different theme and team every year, there’s a season for everyone All 3 franchises are made for young children and have basically cornered the shoujo market in recent years. I love looking at all the cute outfits in each one, and lolita fashion is a part of all of them
I have always loved how the magical girls dress especially the poofy dressses and Lolita is so gorgeous I really really love the poof of those dresses btw
I love Rinko ("goth-loli-sama") from Shirobako; there's one episode (episode 16) that goes a little into her background and why she wears lolita, and it's one my favorite moments in the show.
An anime I recommend is Tsukuyomi moon phase, the gothic/kawaii fashion is great! And it has a good balance of gothic environments and outfits and comedy I highly recommend it!
Rozen maiden was my introduction to lolita fashion and one of my favourite animes of all time (it was also one of my first animes too) so was nice to see it mentioned!! ❤
gosick is like my favorite anime of all time and I fell in love with lolita fashion in elementary school because of it lmao. Definitely recommend if you like dark mystery with a very light hint of fantasy. There is romance but I would say the main theme is heavy in the mystery genre
I LOOOVE Artiswitch! I would also recommend Carole and Tuesday! It's a slice of life about two girls from completely different walks of life who meet by chance and bond over their love of music. They begin living together, making music, and pursuing their dreams of becoming professional musicians. Tuesday wears a lot of Lolita/Lolita-adjacent clothing.
aikatsu stars in particular was literally my whole life, i watched every episode from 2016 to 2018 when it ended! i especially loved the outfits of ‘lily shirogane’, they are very lolita like! Also, just wanted to say your videos are so calming snd nice to watch, thanks for your hard work!
I would love to recommend you heaven's design team, such a fun, educational and lighthearted anime, but so underrated in my opinion. There is cool Lolita character and also stylish queer character! Also, I watched over a thousand anime at this point and you still managed to surprise me with titles Tha I didn't know or heard of, like fantasia dolls. That would be so great if xxxholic got remake or at least remaster, such a good anime in my memory, but hard to watch nowadays becouse of poor grafics😢
An anime i never seen mentioned is "dropkick on devil/ jashin-chan dropkick". One of the main characters Yurine, is a gothic lolita, and many other characters wear the fashion. But, fair warning, its a weird anime.
A big introduction to lolita fashion for me was Anju from Chibi Vampire Karin. It's also a slice of life supernatural romance, so I refinitely recommend it to folks who like that vibe! It's a bit older, but the whole thing is on RU-vid.
Love the video! Actually surprised i hadn't heard of a couple of them! I'll have to watch artiswitch! Also omg an mmo junkie rewatch is absolutely on my mind now
Aikatsu, and card captor Sakura eek. card captor Sakura was definitely my introduction to Lolita when I was 10, and I’ve been in love with it ever since.
Not an anime but man Vampire Doll was THE gothic lolita manga for me its SO over the top it really gave me some unrealistic expectations for the fashion XD
The fact theres never been a mention of chidori in either the anime or the game video is sacrilege! Gothic lolita fits her abnormal personality and values well, and the motifs in her outfit really come together when combined with her character. Not only is her dress a really solid coord, lolita fits her so well. ‘For yourself’ dressing and non-sexualised femininity really encapsulates her withdrawn yet unique identity, as well as playing into the themes around her depression through her unique accessories.
I found Lolita because of Chibi Vampire. The sister wears Victorian inspired/ gothic Lolita clothes and all I could think about when reading it was how I wanted to look like her.
I found lolita fashion through a little obscure anime called Kokoro Library. It's such a lovely slice of life show about three sisters living at a library on a hill. The ending is a bit crazy but i still love it.
The classic: Death Note. Misa Amane has a lot of outfits, mostly encompassing lots of gothic styles. There are some episodes that show her in a full lolita coord, and in the most dramatic part of the anime she is wearing a full gothic lolita coord!
one of my favourite anime All Saints Street / Wan Sheng Jie has a scene where one of the main characters, Neil Bowman, wears lolita fashion while he's out shopping with a different main character. it's a comedy slice of life one that can be pretty episodic
I have an anime recommendation. Since you Aikatsu is a guilty pleasure of mine as well. PriPara, evolution/sequel of Prism Star. Prism Star doesn’t have as much Lolita Fashion as its successor. They changed the name when they removed the ice skating aspect and expanded the alternate digital dimension. They also added categories for the fashions (more than the 4 in Aikatsu).
I used to play Fantasista doll game in high school and Akari is my favorite! She introduced me to lolita fashion. The game is a bit weird for “bathing” feature but it still has a special place in my heart. Especially when I got Akari’s card, I was so happy! Thank you for sharing your thoughts!
I used to be a much more frequent anime watcher but fell off of it and treat it a similar way to what you described for yourself. BUT these all have me legitimately so excited to watch anime again
Idolm@ster represent!! So happy someone is talking about it 💕 Ranko's VA Uchida Maaya has voice many gothic lolita inspired characters often with Uesaka Sumire, who voices Anastasia in IM@S Cinderella Girls, who wears lolita and has modeled for AP and BTSSB! Also Artiswitch was so fun 💕
Wow, a video i can finally say this, but this comment might give excessively violent whiplash upon hearing that there's an episode of Hetalia (from its newest season that came out in 2021, Hetalia World☆Stars) in which the character China is literally wearing Qi Lolita that he made by hand and then questions on why a 4,000 year old funny country person like him is wearing lolita in the first place (it does mention in a little blerb on the Chinese side of the fashion too a little bit!) But there's also the character Liechtenstein who appears that she is always wearing Innocent World and apparently according to TV Tropes, Belarus is also a lolita-inspired character 🤔 Legit though, the dub of the anime has become a lot more tame than its very offensive counterparts a long time ago, but i could only watch the dub anyways bc of my autistic ass being heavily overwhelmed by the subtitles flashing back and forth so much orz
I highly recommend you read Pandora Hearts by Jun Mochizuki! And yes the same person who is making the famous "Case Study of Vanitas" But pls avoid the anime version because it doesn't do the series justice because it ends at a cliffhanger due to unpopularity.
OOOHH I'll definitely have to try some of these out!!!! One anime character came to mind who Sometimes wears lolita fashion, is Yohane Tsushima from Love Live Sunshine! But I wouldn't call it a lolita fashion anime overall
I clicked on this video from the infamous pink dress video, hoping that you'd review My Dress Up Darling! It's about the friendship/relationship between a popular, bubbly girl who wants to start doing cosplay and a shy guy who makes Hina dolls (and thus knows how to sew) - the first cosplay they work on is an elaborate gothic lolita character's dress, and they go very in depth on the fabric choices, construction and time consuming process of making it. A large aspect is about cosplay-specific choices, but also about wearability of these elaborate dresses and they touch on a lot of the nuances of making handmade garments. Please I would love to see a video of you reacting to this! I want to know what you think of the accuracy and would love to know more on if there were other aspects they could have elaborated on.
if i can add more suggestions, Umineko no Naku Koro Ni has many characters (Lambdadelta, Bernkastel, Erika, Gaap and more included) who have outfits pulled nearly identically from old GLB's! Red Bard here on youtube has a really good video about it, especially the part about the character Virgilia's dress being in a fashion museum - not to mention Erika Furudo has a JSK that was actually reproduced and sold by Souffle Song!!!!!
thanks for all the anime recommendations!!! i like that you talked about an anime with an older MC at the end, recently ive felt a bit uncomfortable with underage characters in anime (especially girls) and how they are depicted or treated. it really put me off watching anything for a while when there is an upskirt shot of a 14 year old girl within the first 3 minutes....
Thank Goodness That Lor Taking A Massive Reviewing about this Topic I Should Honest When Rozen Maiden anime is out in middle 2000's era , So Obsessed I am with that anime , Even i buy any magazine that reviewing that anime
I still remember how one of my metal magazines had a write up about Visual Kei and had pictures of Malice Mizer in middle school... and then CLAMP just cementing things for me in high school.
Ahhh, I remember the years of debate on whether Chii/Chobits was lolita. So many ruffled frills! Haha Excellent video, Lor and definitely great for the casual anime watcher. Also, pretty sure it is just "holic", the xxx part being like a stand-in particle for whatever addiction. Aaand, I LOVE MMO Junkie!! I also highly recommend Wotakoi as a slice of life romance featuring adults (bonus because it's built around a quickly established couple instead of the "will they, won't they" of most romances).
I found you while researching for an Aikatsu deep dive! I'd love to know if you have any further thoughts on which Aikatsu brands correspond to real lolita brands, the Angelic Pretty connection was super helpful 💛
Its a bit less 1:1 lolita fashion and more victorian children's clothing but I really enjoy the anime Shadow House its a fantasy, mystery (with a smidge of a horror/creep factor in a mildly unsettling way) show about a young girl working for a shadow that looks just like her.
🦋 I haven’t seen much anime, though I have been to a convention, my friends used to run the video game room at Nan Desu Kon in Denver. I recognize video game characters more than others because I would help them by making cosplay for them. Maybe I should watch more anime 😊
There is one stylized anime that got really popular in the West in which one of 2 main characters is a gothic lolita - the thing is, anime is kinda not suited for younger audience (there is a lot of crude jokes, especially in the dub). It's called „Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt“. Stocking is mostly wearing gothic lolita, except in one episode when she is going on a date and wearing more sweet style.
This actually helps me a lot!! I really like incorporating my fashion styles into things and so lately I was thinking of a gender bend of a character using a cool looking jsk I found to make a character inspired coord :D
Hazuki from moon phase is also heavily inspired by Lolita. It’s about a guy who’s a photographer, and he walks into a castle, and ends up meeting a vampire girl by the name hazuki. It’s a super cute romance drama anime, if your into the whole vampire kind of anime.
Cardcaptor Sakura is too cute and theres so many great outfits !! One lolita anime that I love is Puella Magi Madoka Magica !! It starts as another magical girl storyline but with is actually more horror with a super dark twist, big trigger warnings but i loveeee how the lolita fashion styles have a big variety but is shockingly genuine characters in impossible situations. One thats more cute is Sleepy Princess in the Demon Castle !! extremely uwu the princess is just making cute outfits and acessories from stuff in the demon castle? highly recommend !!
