Couldn't have said it better myself! Necrophagia is really underrated and does not get enough credit. I would add Decased Luck of The Corpse as well. Great video!
Thanks man, I'm sure I'm being biased in someways but I really tried to stick to essential, even though that can def. be debated here and there for sure. Cheers
Thats what i always loved about Left Hand Path is the atmosphere on that album such a flawless album front to back.Clandestine is also another banger even though its not LG on vox its still a great album, how can ya not love the riffs on Sinners Bleed.
I think if LG was on vocals or even Ovar from Nirvana 2002 was actually able to perform on it , it would be held in higher regard, still a banger for sure.
im kinda surprised that Necrophagia isn't talked about more considering they are considered to be THE FIRST Death Metal band right next to Possessed and Death.
They're kind of average to be honest, I mean Season of the Dead isn't bad, but I wouldn't put it in a top 10 list just because it was early DM. Same with Slowly We Rot, it's good while it's on, but just not particularly memorable and not something I come back to that often. What is most influential isn't necessarily essential in my opinion. It's like Master of Puppets, I wouldn't put that album anywhere near my top 10 thrash albums, but sure it's probably one of the most influential.
Couldn't agree with you more! As essential band i think there should be Bolt Thrower too because of their way of playing which lots of bands nowadays are trying to do...
Great list Dennis! I'd say all of those are essential for getting into Death Metal, all absolute classics and very important for the genre. Cool to see some Dismember, Entombed, Deicide, Obituary, Carcass, Morbid Angel and Death!🤘🏻🤘🏻
No arguing with most of these. Necrophagia is only one I never really got on with, I'd likely throw in Swamped in Gore from Broken Hope or Victims of Internal Decays self titled as essential DM albums for me anyway. Always love your picks dude, you're everyone's favourite death metal historian 😁
Love that Uneashed album, revisited it again at the weekend in fact. Absolute weapon. Same goes for Dismember. It never let's up. I prrfer Legion, but the debut is fantastic too. Evil as fuck. Slowly We Rot was such a fucking shock at the time. THOSE vocals. Symphonies Of zSickness is flawless to me. Still stands up today. Left Hand Path is brilliant, but I'm a Clandestine guy. Altars Of Madness is a masterpiece, Blessed Are The Sick murders too. LOVE Necrophagia, one of my favourie Death Metsl bands. Seven Churches is definitely a Death Metal record. Scream Bloody Gore fucking rules. Autopsy of course are the ultimate Death Metal band. Killer list Dennis, great video!
Banger after banger dude agree on all of them. I’d add realm of chaos (not my favorite thought) but would be hard to decide which to kick out in its place.
Nothing I can add to this, you did all heavy the work schooling it, great topic! Funny as I got done watching the video an ad for an online university came on the end… as if the algorithm was aware how educational the content was, haha. Just out of curiosity… would early Cannibal Corpse have made your top 15 or 20 as part of that essentials pack?
Yea I believe I added The Bleeding to my top 20 favorite DM records a few years ago and they would easily make the top 20 but not sure how essential they were to the scene but def to bands coming out later for sure. cheers Rick
Killer video Dennis mate! I can’t disagree on any of your picks whatsoever. Just classics every damn one of them! And loving that edge of sanity shirt. Killler!! 😉🤘🏻🍺
As a dutchman sempiternal deathreign would be in there. Total gamechanger for me. Other than that its very close to my list (maybe i would sneak pungent /disharmonic split in there somewhere)
All of them top notch choices. I consider as essentials so many other LP's also. Records like Pestilence-Consuming impulse, Bolt Thrower- Realms of chaos, Death-Leprosy, Morbid Angel-Blessed are the sick, Master-Master..too many really. Fell in love with death metal instantly when i was a teen back in the golden 90s. Thanks to this Roadrunner compilation called, At death's door. Great stuff man. My best years. In fact, my only years with some good times. But brutal music still keeps me company. I am close to enter 50 years of age, and instead of leaving brutal sound behind, i enjoy them more, cause now we also have better monitors and audio systems. Back then we had tapes and shit. Good times, i wasn't complaining back then, but i love my bass pouring out of the monitors in their full force. Instant sub.
Great list. I would have switched cause of death for slowly we rot cause that was the first obituary i heard and 'Infected' and 'Body Bag' blew my mind but damn, thats a proper DM essential list.
The album death wishes they did is how I always describe severed. It’s crazy how most normies don’t even know Chris was on scream bloody. Also 🐐 bass mix
Hi Dennis!!! well done and that's the way things should be done..... coming from a guy that really know about the genre, i'm not a fan of extreme music, nut i have listen to some of the big names and kind of like Death and another couple of bands maybe not the big names like Vader, Benediction. cheers and be well
We’re pretty much on the same page for bands (I’m 51). The only differences are obituary Death and morbid angel I would have chosen cause of death , leprosy , and blessed are the sick . That’s when I feel they were all at their peak .
If we're talking *Essential* death metal, not just favourite albums I couldn't in all good conscience not mention Mortifications 1992 album Scrolls of the Megilloth. Thanks for the vid. & It was thoroughly entertaining to listen to & watch....P.S. I was listening to Slowly we rot at work & my boss unexpectedly walked in & asked me *"Who's this band?"* to which I replied *"It's a Floridian band named Obituary "* to which his response was *" Oh, It's sounds like they're fucking dead "* : )
It's really odd and pretty sad how Necrophagia seems to have just been buried under time, especially for how insane their demos were, some of the most extreme music made up to that point, and how fully formed they were by 1987. I was born in the mid 80's and they were a big deal still in the mid/late 90's, a certain Phil dude definitely helped with that, but how bands like Incantation, Suffocation, Demolition Hammer, the Swedish bands and a whole ton more legacy bands found a second life with the kids today worshiping their sounds, Necrophagia never experienced that. Maybe they're too fringe, I don't know, but it's a god damn shame, though the fate of “underground forever“ is pretty fitting for them hah
I never got it either, prob the production or just never the right time, who knows. The stuff with Phil is next level eerie, his lack of skill playing and addiction def added to the off kilter feeling you get listening to those records and the videos are pure underground horror shit as well!! Cheers
@@analogarchives found it, hahah, awesome. I'd be interested in your list for 92-96ish. I was born in '82, so that was more my entry point.l (for better or WORSE).
@@analogarchives most definitely underrated. There’s quite a few underrated ones out there that should be appreciated and listened to more imho. All the very best to you sir 🤘
Obituary - Slowly we rot Morbid Angel - Blessed are the sick Bloodbath - Resurrection through carnage Carcass - Symphonies of sickness Vital Remains - Let us prey Hypocrisy - Osculum Obscenum Asphyx - Necroceros Grave - Into the grave/Tremendous pain Death - The sound of perseverance Primitiv - Immortal & vile (Indian death) Aeternam - Ruins of empires (Arabic death) Real good ones imho
@@analogarchives you may like the last two, I don’t know. Let me know what you think of them. I’ve been exploring metal, in general, from other areas of the world and I can say pretty confidently, that there are some awesome bands to find 🙂 The Arab world has some crackers As for the Bloodbath album above, I’d say that is pretty much an essential one, as are the Morbid Angel and Obituary ones
@@analogarchives Here’s a list of Arabic metal bands/albums to check out if you so wish: (From Iraq) Acrassicauda - Gilgamesh (From Egypt) Crescent - the order of Amenti (blackened death) (From United Arab Emirates) Nervecell - Past, present…torture (death, great album) (From Lebanon) Blaakyum - The line of fear (From Jordan) Esodic - Mirrors of disgrace ep (From Syria) Ambrotype - The revelations (From Egypt) Scarab - Blinding the nations (comp album) (From Kuwait) Divine Disorder - Garden of dystopia (From Bahrain) Narjahanam - Wa ma khufiya a’atham (From Algeria/France) Acyl - Aftermath (From Morocco but formed in Quebec) Aeternam - Moongod - I mentioned that other album of theirs in the other post to you
And here is a list of Indian metal bands and albums for you: The Down Troddence - How are you? we are fine. Thank you Bhayanak Maut - Man Spithope - Care is fiction, fiction is reality Rudra - Eight mahavidyas Kryptos- The coils of apollyon Chaos - Violent redemption Deamonstealer - …And chaos will reign Against evil - End of the line Kasck - Deal with the devil ep Weird Anxiety - Act 1 scene 1 Dreadhammer - Sovereign Orion - On the banks of rubicon ep Theorized - Psychosphere Gutslit - Amputheater (death, great album) Inner sanctum - Legions awake (great album) Armament - First strike ep Plague Throat - Evolutionary impasse ep (death, great ep) Perestroika - The most confidential knowledge Darkrypt - Delirious excursion (death, great album) Godless - States of chaos (death, great album) Ksetravid - Man made crisis (single), The third eye (single), Static belief (single) I reckon you’ll love some of those ones! Hope you enjoy listening to them 🤘
The Seven Churches argument will go on for eternity. Jeff Becerra himself has repeatedly confirmed it is a Death Metal. If people can't believe someone IN the band, then who do you believe?
Every thrash band had a Nuclear war or global warming song on their record in 88-89 for some reason. Maybe the record companies were paying them to do it
It's possible, I just think they wanted to distance themselves as more than just dudes that sang about violence and the occult...which is what thrash was about, MTV was probably a huge influence at the time too. Cheers
All your picks are fantastic. The only one I disagree with is Necrophagia. I just think that band is without a doubt the most overrated old school underground band out there. I know it’s hard to call a band like them overrated but I seem to be the only person that just doesn’t get that band. I know you love them, I respect that but to put that in there for essential and to not put Butchered at Birth or Tomb of the Mutilated is like doing an essential thrash album list and not putting mentioning at least one of the first three Metallica albums. Love or hate the Corpse they are the number 1 death metal band and have kept that title to this day. (In popularity and sales) when talking essential by your definition that counts. Influence too. How many CC rip offs are there? Probably 100s Anyway thanks for the content as always
Cool man, but I think just the opposite and think CC is way overrated and nothing that great no matter how many records they sell. I like the first couple and The Bleeding but after that it's pretty mundane honestly. Again just my opinion and think Necrophagia writing DM demo's since 84 deserve way more respect than they do. Cheers man always like the discussion
@@analogarchives Barnes is (was) the shit, Corpsegrinder is just shit. Not really though, but he definitely gets boring after a couple of songs as he lacks the dynamics and quirkiness of peak Barnes. He's just all about monotonous speed and brutality. Run-of-the-mill vocalist. Anyways, great list! I feel Speckmanns footprint should be on here somehow, but he might be too thrashy and dark-horsy🤔 Probably just me having a softspot for his plentiful projects....
Entombed - Left Hand Path Morbid Angel - Covenant Deicide - Deicide Death - Individual Thought Patterns Grave - Into The Grave Cannibal Corpse - Tomb of the Mutilated Bolt Thrower - The IVth Crusade Nocturnus - The Key Obituary - The End Complete Immolation - Dawn of Possession
