Great video John, I really love the Genesis and its huge library. Light Crusader is such a steal, I spent many hours with Desert Strike back in the day, also recently picked up Cyborg Justice complete for $6, had a lot of fun with friends when it was new
Definitely some good ones in there. NBA Jam TE is one of my favorite games ever and I see complete copies all the time for about $10. The 6-pak is also a great deal in terms of bang for your buck.
I remember playing Columns and Streets of Rage/Bare Knuckle with a neighbor of mine back in the day. We would also exchange games and give each other tips on them as well.
RoadBlasters looks like the RC Pro Am I always wished for back when the game was new. I grew to love Pro Am so no big deal there. Nothing better content wise than you covering Genesis!
Another excellent video, from a genuinely great person. I know I speak for everyone subbed when I say that we all appreciate you and the content you put out. The way you explain games gives me the same nostalgia as if I was playing the games myself. ImmortalJohn an excellent representative of the retro gaming scene. I couldnt pick a better person if I tried.
John I just have to say how awesome that Genesis wall is. I just turned 40 and looking at that wall took me back to the early 90s. Man what an amazing time that was for gaming. Also I had Desert Strike and remember the day i beat it. I had such a sense of accomplishment. Even remember my parents were watching "Guarding Tess" on VHS when I beat it. Memories lol
Cool video! I rented Jungle Strike from my local video store enough times back in the day that I probably could've owned it. And yes, those strike games are underrated gems. Technoclash would've been added to my list as well. It's like a quicker version of Shadowrun with a variety of magic abilities from the start. I picked it up recently at a retro game store for five bucks.
Love these ranking videos. Reminds me of games I forgot and games I gave up too quickly when I was a kid due to no manual. Older me has gone back to games I gave up on.
John, Awesome! One of your best video's ever! This could easily be an "overlooked" games people should play video... Good to know these gems are still affordable. Thanks!
I remember me and about 6-8 childhood friends would auto skip the regular season on tecmo super bowl and we would pick from the teams that made the playoffs to try and win the super bowl just about every weekend. A lot of late nights and fond memories.
Awesome video. I never owned a Genesis as a kid but played it at friends and stores growing up. Always looking for recommendations to experience with my collection now!
Definetly helps to have a crt on that one. Much easier to win because every bit of reaction time is crucial. On my lcd flat screen it has some lag and I'm lucky to get past level 2. On my crt I can get to least 8
Oh my goodness I can't believe you mentioned COMBAT CARS. That friggin game was so hard for me as a kid. Also, the character select screen SCREAMS 90's!
Great video John. I sincerely think you should made "a budget" video for each platform you own. It will be a great series & lot of people will support it.
As always, great video John. Love the Strike series... great missions, and depth. You must have a few mores stories to tell on how you attained some of the games in your collection. Be nice to have a video (or 2) on the topic ;)
some great games on this list! One of my favorite not super expensive Genesis games are the first two Road Rash games, they were some of my absolute favorites growing up and i always play them if i'm messing around with a Genesis or emulation of one.
Loved that Ren and Stimpy game as a child! My friends and I laughed so hard when we played it. Wasn't a huge fan of Pac Attack. I did like that Road Blasters game I think it was. We played it at a pizza place all the time. (Only game they had)
John Hancock, don't forget about the two other sequels that were released for that system as well, namely, Jungle Strike and Urban Strike. This series also ended with Future Cop: LAPD, which I enjoyed immensely on the PS1/PSX. Finally, the first three games in the series were also released for the SNES/NSFC and they also play just as well.
Soldiers of Fortune was called The Chaos Engine in Europe. I played it a lot on the Amiga with friends, it’s really great, I love the soundtrack. I got to get the Genesis-version now that I saw it...
Don’t know of the prices offhand but the Road Rash games are pretty solid. I played a ton of James Pond II growing up it was a fun platformer that is cheap if I remember.
B.O.B. was also pretty fun, and, best of all, it was also available for the SNES, and neither version of the game sucked. I do remember playing the Road Rash Trilogy on there back in the day and having fun with it as well.
Good call on "Light Crusader" & "Desert Strike" AWESOME games. Light Crusader is the only Genesis game I had to buy brand new because I love it so much I wanted that copy all to myself :)
In Europe Soldiers of Fortune was known as The Chaos Engine, I remember it was a really big deal when it was first released on Amiga, got great reviews
Cool list. I remember playing Roadblasters in the arcade. It had a cool yoke style controller which was great for steering and shooting. How about Eswat or Cyberball? Those were great games that I can't imagine are too expensive now. A blessed 4th to you and your family.
How does Desert Strike compare to Jungle or City Strike? I picked up Jungle Strike a few weeks back, and kinda forgot about it...will need to give it a play.
Nice selection of titles! I hadn’t realised The Chaos Engine was re-titled for the American release (or that it was so cheap there - it’s about £20-30 here)!
I still have fun with Cyborg Justice. Lots of fun removing baddies arms and pulling their torsos off to get extra health. I spent hours with Desert strike. It was the first game I got with my Genesis. I made maps of the last couple levels because of how difficult it could be to find ammo or fuel.
Perhaps my favorite game that I've only seen on the Genesis was "Blades of Vengeance". Played the heck out of that with my brother as a kid, but I have no idea how much it would cost now.
I bought a genesis lot back in 2010. It had Combat Cars in the lot. I never heard of Combat Cars when I owned a Genesis back in the early to mid 90's, and based off the box art work I figured it sucked. I still have never even played it as my library grew. All have to try it out because it looks good, and I loved RC Pro AM. It also had Desert Strike, but I never played it either because I loved Jungle Strike and it came with the lot.
Soldiers of Fortune (or The Chaos Engine as its know in my region) was one of my favourite games on the Amiga! I still feel like its best played with a joystick, but the Mega Drive version is still great, and has good music!
I don't really collect for the Mega Drive but there's a few titles there I'll be keeping an eye out for. Have you got plans to do this kind of video for other systems?
I have one question about sega Genesis games did all of the original releases of sega Genesis games come with black and white manuals or were there color manuals as well for the original releases of the sega Genesis games
I really needed this video in my life. I just started collecting for Sega Genesis, and my budget is fixed while I pay my student loans off in 1 year. Thanks, John!!!!
i am new to collecting genesis games and I am wondering if you pay extra for games with "the goodies" as you call them. the reg card and or posters. im trying to collect all genesis games. some of the CIB ones with the extras are way more than just manual box and game.
Yeah...you can get Desert Strike nowadays pretty cheap. But back in the day, I paid around 65 dollars for it :) I still have my copy though and it's still one of my favorite games for the system.
Soldiers of Fortune is also called The Chaos Engine worldwide, and if you do not own a Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, guess what, you can also get it for the SNES/NSFC (Super Famicom), Commodore/AGA Amiga, MS-DOS, Amiga CD32, Atari ST, RISC OS, and, most recently, possibly for the PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PS Vita, and mobile phones, and, yes, they are also available on a vast majority of these platforms for NTSB-U markets as well, and they are also just as great as the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive port of the game, John Hancock. There is also a sequel, but it was only released in Europe and it was only released for the Commodore/AGA Amiga and Amiga CD32.
Man some definite gyms here Love the Sega Genesis graphics had a Sega Genesis back in the day Currently still own a Sega nomad With No mods on It Not much on Clone consuls So the Sega nomad Is the only Genesis I currently have in my collection Always looking for good games to play on it Found a few on this video thanks bro 😎🍻👍
Always loved Soldiers of Fortune (or, as its better known by its correct title, The Chaos Engine. Used to love playing it on my Amiga, and later got the AGA colour version, which looks beautiful. Those are probably the best versions, but the Mega Drive/Genesis is a close 2nd. Desert Strike was also a beloved favourite in the Amiga (and thanks to it's Extra Half-bright mode, you got much more colour than on any other version, along with clearer sound and digitised explosions). But again, the Mega Drive version is a fabulous game. Having recently acquired a 32x and an Everdrive to go with my Mega Drive and Mega CD (and a lovely wireless controller from 8bitdo), I'm revisiting the Mega Drive/Genesis library, to see what I missed. Currently, really enjoying Sunsoft's Batman the Movie.
Wow. I forgot about Cyborg Justice, that was fun. I rented that multiple times about 27 years ago. Completely forgot about it until seeing this video! I'm also a Genesis fan. Good picks.
No one ever talks about "B.O.B." from EA on Genesis and SNES. The Genesis version plays a little better imo. Awesome gameplay, and bright big sprites. It's a awesome run and gun with multiple weapons and power ups. Some puzzles and platform aspects. Great game! Would love to see it in one of your reviews. Awesome video and great game recommendations, as always.
As someone that a. owned both systems, and b. played that game on both systems, they play practically identical to one another, though the sound is clearer on the SNES.
@@paxhumana2015 to me the Genesis colors look shaper and, for lack of a better term "crisper?". Talking about the background. Like some of the slimes and electronics seem to pop more to me on the Genesis. You are right the controls are pretty much identical; except for whatever reason I have a harder time grabbing rails and sliding on the SNES version; and I guess I was referring to the Genesis 3 button controller feels better to me than the SNES layout. I should have been more specific. No wasted buttons. Just a preference thing. Glad to see someone else who enjoys the game 👍
Never played Desert Strike, but I own both of its sequels, Urban Strike and Jungle Strike and think both are absolutely fantastic. If you can't find Desert Strike then I think it's safe to recommend the sequels just as much.
Cheap playable games I've found . James Pond 1-3, fantastic dizzy, Izzy's quest for rings got it for $5 complete on eBay, generations lost, tiny toons got them all for $10 complete each i believe
Soldiers of fortune in Europe is known as The Chaos Engine. And also its a bit pricey, because megadrive was very popular over here. Great game anyway.

Pac-Attack is a very addicting game, I def recommend this one too.
For genesis sports games, can't pass up EA NHL 94 and Madden 95. A few other cheap games that I recommend are F15 strike Eagle II, Last Battle, and Aero The Acrobat
