I truly admire your collection. I've been a collector for years as well but only alone less than a quarter of what you have. Maybe less. I'm just under 2,000 games. The Sega Genesis is my by far favorite console growing up as a kid I was never a Nintendo fan. Don't hate Nintendo though just the Sega games appealed to me more. I owned both consoles. I became visually impaired / blind 6 months ago and I can't even play video games anymore however, I never stopped collecting have two teenage Sons that will get my collection eventually and it's fun to collect. But, I recently found one video game that I can somewhat play and it's back on the Sega Genesis. It's Splatterhouse 3 I only have about 10% Vision in my left eye and even that isn't seeing it's just Blobs of colors and shapes but it's enough for me to see the character and the Sprites good enough to move through the levels. I was so happy because I've been miserable not being able to play any games. Again I admire you for collecting as much as you have and I hope to be there eventually to. I just have a hard time finding a Sega CD that's my next goal.

@Michael O Callaghan truly I agree. I always knew what I had however after losing my sight you tend to find out how much the people in your life truly are there for you. I'm blessed enough for I still have my side peripheral a little bit and Technology to allow me to be able to speech to text Etc. Everyday is a new learning curve. But that's exactly what it is a curve then you hit the straight away and just flow with it till the next curve.

Vincent Grasso i feel very sorry for you that you have lost 90% of your sight. But it’s incredible that you are likely still able to put commands on youtube ,right? But would you belive that i only see 7% with my richt eye while with my left eye i don’t see anything at all ,no light, nothing. But despites that am just gaming, doing all stuff athome, cycling outside on my bike edoing sport games on gym such as soccor, volley ball etc,,, I was almost born with such low sight so i just don’t know better. I know other peoples wich can only see 25% with both eyes but they can’t even use a remote control wich is average.

Agree 100% on Streets of rage 2. It's truly the only game I go back and play all the way through after all these years. I feel so lucky to still have my original cartridge. Since you have the entire collection it's pretty awesome to hear that your favorite one is Streets of rage 2. It was always my favorite game growing up

Genesis was my first console, I got it when I was 6 I believe. I remember the one I got came with Sonic 3 and a Sega t-shirt. Played the hell out of that thing, even after I got my PS1 when I turned 8, I always went back to X-men and Street Fighter turbo.

Thank you John for another great video and for sharing your experience. I bought my first Sega Genesis in 1991. I went to my local mall with my wife (I got hitched to young) I was 16 years old at the time and as soon as I purchased the console with Sonic the Hedgehog and held that beauty on my hands, went home, opened it (loved and remember the new smell from the Genesis), I knew I was in for a great gaming experience. Sadly I had to sell all my games over the years or else today my collection would of been great. Now, I only have about 33 Sega Genesis games (pitiful huh?) But I own some nice ones from altered beast, wonderboy in monster world, castle of illusion, golden axe, shinobi 1,2 and three, super monaco gp and so on. I really enjoy your channel, collection and above all, your humility. I appreciate how you keep it wholesome without using profanity for younger viewers to enjoy. Take great care. 👍👍👍

I’ve recently bought a Sega Mega Drive again. I remember being 6 and playing Sonic over and over again. I am now 31 and have Sonic 3 in my Mega Drive and intend to build a collection of games that I had as a child and also building new memories on what I think is pretty much the Greatest Console of All Time! This is a great video John, keep up the great work. New Subscriber here watching your older videos and enjoying them

The Genesis will always have a special place in my heart. My wife and I still play Streets of Rage 2 and love every second of it. I was totally hooked on Starflight, such an awesome under rated game. Sega Genesis was the bad boy on the block that everyone secretly wanted to be.

Love the video! Like you I have priceless memories playing Genesis. I remember seeing Sonic 1 for the first time, playing it, and being blown away. Later I would play NBA Jam, Mortal Kombat, Aladdin, Steel Empire, Madden, NHL, Gunstar, Streets of Rage, and Street Fighter 2 Champion Ed. like crazy. How could you forget these games (or others like Splatterhouse 2, Virtua Racing, Ristar, not to mention the awesome space shooters). The Genesis was an underdog to the SNES (another all time great system) but held its own with unique experiences. It had a cool factor aura that still exists for me. The sound was not as good but it was distinctly sega (gritty, creative, and cool). Back then, we would buy a game, then sell it for the next one since they were expensive, but I wish we could have kept all those games... Sega eventually failing was painful to watch but the memories will always be there. “Bare knuckle!!!”

The Sega Megadrive was a MASSIVE part of my childhood. I remember spending all my pocket money at the rental shop every weekend. Streets of Rage 2 is in my top 3 - no doubt. Sonic 1-3/& Knuckles will always have a special place in my heart! My dad loved Desert/Jungle Strike. Toejam and Earl.... wow. Just so many! ❤

Streets of Rage 2 is my favorite as well. I remember getting a preview of it ON VHS, no less, and I just watched the footage over and over and over, until the cassette barely worked. The game did not disappoint, I have completed it hundreds of times. The Mega Drive also had a large number of absolutely groundbreaking games for me in general. Phantasy Star 2 dazzled me with its enormous world, Super Street Fighter II was almost arcade perfect, Gunstar Heroes is my favorite run and gun-shooter of all time, and the mighty Sonic 2 was just a dazzling masterpiece for me. I've recently begun collecting again, and I've been enjoying the hell out of Dragon's Fury and Ranger X. It also made me branch out and get all the other Sega consoles I missed back then (due to being dirt poor), so I've picked up the Mega CD, the 32X, the Saturn and the Dreamcast. Only missing a Game Gear now. Thanks for the memories, Sega, both old and new. I'm a fan forever.

It's one of my favorite systems of all time. I had the master system and got the genesis at launch. Aside from the great games you mentioned, my favorite games on the system ended up being Strider, Midnight Resistance, Thunder Force III, Musha (which I actually bought when it came out), Hyperstone Heist, Valis III, Golden Axe and Batman-movie adaption. I remember playing those constantly. Every birthday and xmas revolved around what genesis games I got.

Very nostalgic video. Neat to hear your personal history with the Genesis. Never had one growing up but I do now and I'm eager to play a bunch of these. It's interesting that you'd go to a local place to test games to see if you'd want to buy them. That doesn't really exist these days, at least around me, so I go to RU-vid gameplay videos to see if I'd like to own the games. Very interesting.

My memory of Sega Genesis, playing the hell out of Streets of Rage 1 and 2, as well as Golden Axe. Street of Rage was hands down my favorite. I first played it over my a friends house when I still owned an NES. He owned a few Mortal Kombat games on the Genesis. I would occasionally go to The Wiz electronic store to play consoles, including Genesis. Once I got my hands on a Genesis, it was Streets of Rage and Golden Axe all day. A nice Halloween hidden gem on Genesis is Haunting Starring Polterguy, still own that game and love it. I also love Kid Kameleon and bonanza bros.

we have similar collecting backgrounds John. the Genesis was my first system I bought with my money ftom burger flipping at McDonald's back in 89'. like you said, games were fewer back then so you played what you had and appreciated it more. was my work horse system from 89'- 95' .even though I had a jaguar that was my show horse, my genesis 32x cd was the work horse. most of my games and gaming were done on it till my Saturn collection grew.great system had great arcade ports. almost got a nes instead but I wanted the best in 89' and loved Sega arcade games. so many fun memories with it. cheers for ol' Nelly the work horse!! not the best but reliable as all hell lol!!!

Great vid Johnny! For me it will always be Golden Axe. As a kid back home in the Phillipines, my neighbour will ask me to join him and play GA. We would walk 45 mins to get to this Internet Cafe. Pretty much a place where there's chairs and old crt's are hooked up with NES and Genesis. And we would play Golden Axe for so long. One of my cherished gaming memory.

Much like John the Sega Genesis is very near and dear to my heart for not only the same reason that it was the first console I bought with my own money but also the first console I owned period. Growing up my parents made the conscious decision not to allow any video game consoles in the house. Their reasons were many, varied, and I must as an adult admit logical but I won't get into all that right now. What it did mean was that there were no video games in the house till I got a job in high school and my own bank account that they couldn't control or interfere with. With my own meager part time earnings I bought a second hand model 1 genesis with a model 2 sega cd attached. I have many fond memories of playing games with my kid brother on that system, sonic, lethal enforcers, Ulitmate MKIII, and too many to name. I still have the system in my collection and it still works. That one small purchase set me on the road to collecting, made me a Sega fan for life, and helped cement the bond between my brother and I with our shared love of video games that we still have to this day. Thank you Sega!

Great video John! I love how genuine you are with your videos. Alot of youtube channels try too hard with weird jokes and time wasting gimmicks. And you absolutely nailed it with Streets Of Rage 2 being the BEST game on the console. So many good memories of me and my brother playing it when we were kids in the mid 90's. We still play it to this day, our saying is "the streets aren't looking too safe tonight" or "time to clean up the streets" and we laugh and know it's time to fire it up. And his girlfriend rolls her eyes knowing she'll have to sit there and watch us play through the entire game.

Oh, there are just so many great memories with my Genesis... The early Sega arcade releases were probably my favorites. One of my favorite accomplishments of the time was winning the Championship and defending it in Super Monaco GP. I picked up both a model one and model to Genesis about three or four years ago, thanks in part to seeing you with MJR and then on your own channel. I was able to recover my original collection, and since then have added about another 60 to 70 titles to my collection. My fondest memory on the Genesis was finding a 100 life cheat code for MUSHA in GamePro magazine. Even with the hundred lives, I couldn’t finish stage 5! It also happens to be my biggest regret. If I recall, the game cost about $70. I could never get it, but considering the number of times that I rented it, I probably could’ve used that money to buy it!

I remember WAAY back in olden times (or as the kids like to say, "1992"), I was stationed in Okinawa, Japan serving with the US Marine Corps. I hadn't played video games in quite a while as the last consoles I had owned at the time were a NES and a Commodore 64 which I left at home when I shipped off to boot camp a year earlier. One day, I was walking through my barracks when I saw a flyer on the communal bulletin board stating that a Marine was selling off both a SNES and Sega Genesis. I decided to see the guy who was getting deployed to another base and wanted to sell off his stuff so he wouldn't have to haul it with him. At that very same time, another Marine had showed up who was also interested in buying one of the systems. He was adamant about buying the SNES. Now at this time, I didn't know much about either system aside from a few commercials I had seen on tv and some in-store advertisements. I had seen someone play an off - road racing game on the SNES earlier that year (the title escapes me because I'm old and senile) and was mildly impressed at the graphics but didn't look like anything I'd be especially eager to play, so I wound up buying the Genesis from the guy. He packed in "Sonic The Hedgehog" with the system which I had never seen or played before. Me and my roommate hooked up the system in our room and booted it up. I think we wound up playing for about 3 hours before we decided to call it a night as we had an early run the next day. When I got back to the barracks after work, I immediately took off my boots, sat on the floor, booted up my new Genesis and played Sonic for the rest of that day. Since that day, I became an avid Genesis fan and still love to play and collect Genesis games to this day. And to think it was all because of a guy who was so adamant about buying a SNES that he basically forced me to buy a Genesis. The universe is funny that way.

My first experience with Sega was visiting my mom's cousins in England. They had a Mega Drive and I played these games: Golden Axe, Castle of Illusion, Tazmania, and Moonwalker. I had such a blast playing these games! My parents always bought Nintendo for me (I have an idea why, but don't need to go into it, lol). Now that I'm an adult, it's fun to dig into a console I barely have experience with... it's like being a kid all over again!

So the Sega Genesis was the first home console my family got *brand new*. Both of my parents were in the Navy at the time and to be honest, I'm pretty sure my Dad bought it for himself. I'll never forget the night, I must have have been 6 or 7 years old, and watched my Dad beat the original Sonic The Hedgehog. The Sega Genesis was my first home console so it holds a pretty special place in my heart too. I was 8 years old when I got it for Christmas in 1993 with two games, the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 pack-in game and Mortal Kombat; the latter of which was the sole reason I asked my parents for a Genesis instead of a SNES. Mortal Kombat was every bit as awesome as I had hoped and Sonic 2 turned out to be an amazingly good surprise. I ended up collecting a good 30 or so Genesis games in my youth, but to this day whenever I think "Sega Genesis" the first games that come to mind are the Sonic the Hedgehog and Mortal Kombat series.

Megadrive is the king for me too. Got the first edition here with Altered Beast early for Christmas, but I pulled the old "I need to test it mum, make sure it works" trick... And had a good solid evenings play well before I was actually given it to unwrap. Was the first system I used to go buying import games for too from a specialist shop in North London, picking up Japanese versions of Strider, Magical Hat, Hellfire, DJ Boy... Which all these years later are still solid favs which I will play through regularly. Golden Axe, Revenge of Shinobi, Thunder Force, the library is GOLDEN

Hi, John! Greets from Moscow! Thanks for your another great memory video. In Russia of 90s we haven't much licensed games. We had our own pirate version of Famicom called Dendy, never heard of NES. Original Super Nintendo was a huuuge rarity, and I was very lucky to have a good friend of mine, whos parents got US version of it with stuff like Star Fox, Donkey Kong, Killer Instinct, Rival Turf, BT&DD and Link to the Past. What about Sega - I got my first "High definition" version just a year ago. In 90s there was few friends of mine with more likely pirate copies of asian versions of Mega Drive, and that was a time I goes mad about videogames. First games was Shadow Dancer, Robocop VS Terminator, Golden Axe III, Tiny Toon Hidden Treasures and Splatterhouse 3. Games list was very limited that time - should I say #1 game always was Ultimate MK3 :) All game carts was replicas and chinese copies. Also russian kids goes on playing Mega Drive till 2002, while all the world plays PS and Gamecube. Sometimes I get news about unheard consoles from Sega Magazine, which my dad brings from US. I quit playing consoles in 95 and switch to PC gaming, but came back last year, starting my collection of Genesis, its almost 30 games already) Favorites now are Flink and Dynamite Headdy. Thanks again for your memories and good vibes! ) Ivan.

I bought the Mega Drive on september 27, 1990 on the Swedish release day. There are so many great games. Landstalker, Soliel, Ristar, and series like Shining Force, Phantasy Star, Sonic, Streets of Rage... and not to forget, the very underrated and forgotten Rings of Power!

I loved playing my Genesis growing up and received the Sonic 1 bundle as one of my first games ever! I went on to early own Ms. Pac-Man, Borrowing Toejam And Earl 2 from friends and now to collecting new and exciting games for the console!

You have a great collection Mr. Immortal. My brother bought the Genesis and the only game he bought was X-Men. Man that game is tough. I can only beat it with the cheat code. Without the code I can only get to the Sentinal stage. So many good games for that system like Shadowrun, F-117 Night Storm, all the Sonic games and Shinobi games and so much more.

Great video the Mega Drive is one of my favourite consoles with a huge variety of incredible titles. Even scarier is the NES is 35 years old.

This was a great video, I'm holding off in fully celebrating the 30 years until we reach the Genesis milestone but I feel you, That's my all-time favorite game console and my personal GOAT for the gaming industry. I guess its because its the game console that was with me at my adolescence. I grew up with the Sega Genesis and many of its games appeal to last year in grade school, to Junior High and eventually High School. When I finally got the Sega Saturn in 1996 and replaced the Genesis as the Alpha on my gaming sets I was already on my way to college and had just turned 18yrs old. So in a way that's when the "teen years" ended. but it still remains as the Patriarch because of the massive amount of games, on both Genesis and Mega Drive (as I also got a Japanese Mega Drive later on). I'm somewhere in the ballpark of 450 games for the Sega 16-Bit, and while I refrain to chose an all-time favorite game simply because it has an incredible library of greatness, I always come back to "Streets Of Rage 2" because that was the height of what the Genesis was about. That game alone serves as my "test" when I get a new controller, set up the system with a new TV/Monitor or hook it up to an AV set in Stereo, Surround etc... SOR2 is the system's gold standard.

The genesis was the first console I had growing up. My parents got it for us when I was 4, it was the bundle w/ the first Sonic game, and they picked up Afterburner 2 as well.

I hear you on having to "earn" your consoles & games as a kid, I begged my father for a Atari 2600 but he said no & that was that, it wouldn't be until I was 27 before I saved up & bought my first system the C-64 which absolutely captivated me. It's great to see & hear you discuss the beginning of your gaming experiences earned which makes it all the sweeter my friend.

I can remember having a Sega Master System then we got a Sega Genesis from Babbages at West Oaks Mall in Houston, TX. It came bundled with Altered Beast and I was blown away! I couldn't believe the arcade game I played at the bowling alley looked so good on our TV! I had to send away for Sonic The Hedgehog (the was like a voucher or something) and it came in the mail 8 months later). Never had many titles but I rented quite a few. Mortal Kombat (ABACABB) was so cool!

Nice video as always, I really like your content. I love Mega Drive. The first time I played any games on that system was only four years ago and I fell in love with it. I’m a kid from the early 80’s and I was a huge Nintendo fanboy and I didn’t know anybody who would own Mega Drive. But in 2014 I bought Sega Mega Drive and I was like ”whow, why haven’t I played with this before?!” But here’s my top 3 favorite games: 1. Streets of Rage 2 2. Shinobi III: Revenge of the Ninja Master 3. Castlevania: The New Generation (Bloodlines) I think I’m gonna enjoy some SoR2 right away!

I am completely and utterly jealous of you. I've been trying to find a Sega CD in decent condition and it's virtually impossible for a decent price. I owned all of that as well when I was a kid even the rumble pack if you remember what that was. But they lost it over the years or my brother sold it to his friends cuz he was a jerk. Now, I've been trying to get it all back slowly but surely. Again, I hate you and I am completely jealous of you. LOL

@@myvisuallyimpairedlife5674 I was always so anal about my video game collection.. always took care of all my systems.. and I never even lend any games out cause I'd never get them back, or I'd feel like a jerk asking for them back lol..... but yeah, I LOVE my collection

I actually grew up with a Sega Genesis and SNES after my older sister and oldereet brother swapped consoles. I don't have much nostalgia for the genesis compared to the SNES, but I love hearing your memories about those games. It's fun to hear about people's childhood memories with games.

YES! I'm a HUGE Streets Of Rage 2 fan also! That game blew me away with some of the best music in any cart back in the day, and some exciting beat em up action all the way through. Great, great levels and characters with special moves that were high end for a brawler cart back then. Not as technical or challenging as later head to head fighting games like Mortal Kombat or Street Fighter 2, but certainly just as entertaining! That was one of the first games on the Genesis that I played nonstop until I beat it ( aside from the Sonic franchise).

My all time favorite for the Genesis is Toejam and Earl but the first game I ever played was Sonic The Hedgehog in 1991 at the age of 6. I got my original Genesis system for Christmas in 1994 when I was 9. Lots of great memories and I have to concur with John that SOR 2 is one of if not the greatest side scrolling beat 'em up's of all time. I could write a book on my love for the Sega Genesis....

Amazing collection I grew up Nintendo but went to my friends house a lot to play his genesis so I felt at the time I didn't need to ask for another console. We played Streets of rage series,TMNT Turtles in Time,Sonic series a lot, and of course SF/MK series great times in the 90s.

Hi John, love your channel, love your collection and first of all ,love how humble you are . You like to play and, after, to collect, and thats one thing i appreciate very much on youtubers, cause seems everyone just spends money just for having a huge collection with no love at all for gaming that is the objective for me. keep on man!, just wanted to tell a couple of things you could have miss in your videos. i know is no easy pie making this videos, but is something that cuts the flow every time you cut the video, or when you freeze the image . hope it can help you upgrade this awesome channel. thnx and best regards
