All I have to add is that the destruction of the Enterprise was not "like" the death of a beloved character, it WAS the death of a beloved character. Much like Serenity in the Firefly series and movie, Enterprise is absolutely, 100% a character, and a much-loved one. Other than that tiny detail, good video. Not sure if this theory has been thought of, but i just had a thought. Benny Russel is Sisko after the series. The Sisko did return after his time with the Prophets, but in the 1950's with amnesia of his time as Ben Sisko. and remembered that time as dreams that manifested as story ideas. His subconscious could even be making him see people that sounded and looked like the people he knew as human versions of them. obviously they couldn't have planed that when they made the episode. but it could easily fit.
@barbarossarotbart
@barbarossarotbart Год назад
I've got nearly the same idea. The only difference is, that Benny Russel is a reincarnation of Sisko, who was created by the Prophets to ensure that certain things happen. After Russel died, Sisko went somewhere else, where he is needed, either as a reincarnation or as himself.

I like it. You know, this would be the perfect pitch to Paramount. A new series called Star Trek: Epilogues. It would be an episodic trip through old stories that could give some closure to unresolved plots and characters from TOS through Enterprise. And maybe even shore up the continuity a bit. Might not be everything the old school fans want but I promise it would be a bigger hit than any of the star dreck they are putting out today. (though I am really hoping SNW brings it home in season 2.

One of my favourite callbacks from TNG was in the season four episode, "Data's Day". @@dellytancyl524 I agree to a point, but "A Quality of Mercy" also makes call backs to TOS episode "Obsession". Apart from the USS Farragut, we also have Kirk criticising Pike for "hesitating", which is something Kirk used to do until re-encountering the cloud many years later. This has made Kirk a much better leader. We could also draw comparisons with "City on the Edge of Forever" in that Pike accepting his fate parallels Kirk accepting the fact that "Edith Keeler must die." Both Pike and Keeler wanted peace, but their timing was off sealing the tragedy of both characters.

That Benny Russle episode was one of the best, yet hardest to watch episodes of all of DS9. But the Trubble with Edward wasn't a call back but a retcon. In Enterprise, and TOS it is stated that Tribbles are born pregnant, but only behind breeding when their is ample food around. Since Enterprise takes place a near century before DISCO, that would make Trouble with Edward cannon breaking.

It was in "Mr. Scott's Guide to the Enterprise", and that's exactly how it went. Destruct 0 was the plain jane explosive charges throughout the ship, while Destruct 1 was deactivating the matter-antimatter intermix containment field. (Probably took longer, but made a much bigger KABOOM) Looking at it in that light, given that the Enterprise was already pretty banged up, chances are high that most of the charges had been disabled due to having to reroute power to more necessary systems...or the damage just put'em offline outright.

When Kirk called Scotty to stand by for self distruct in TMP, it probably would be done using Distruct 1. Since the plan was to take out V'Ger and the distruct method in STIII would definitely not have done much to V'Ger, the matter/antimatter comment makes more semse.

In season 2 of Picard, the 000Destruct0 code makes a reappearance when Picard uses it as an emergency self destruct command. As it started a mere 10 second countdown and was the only one required its likely that this instant gratification version was reserved for moments where the ship is soooo close to being taken over, there is no time left to reach a consensus about using it, much less waiting for an amount of time needed for crew to evacuate. It was reserved for "we need to blow the ship up now" kind of moments.
@bigloudnoise
@bigloudnoise Год назад
Something that always stood out to me about the self-destruct sequence in Star Trek III...when you hear the computer counting down, you clearly hear it say "five" before the Klingon captain starts shouting, almost as if to emphasize that "five". Going back to the TOS episode, Captain Kirk says that once the countdown hits "five", there is no stopping the self-destruct. So, having the countdown clearly say "five" in STIII is like a subtle acknowledgement to that fact.

I suppose it's a matter of breeding quickly like a Terran rabbit (short pregnancy and refractory period before the next breeding can occur) vs. what feels like near-instaneous reproduction (based on McCoy's remark about tribbles being "born pregnant"). Basically? Phlox saying tribbles bred like rabbits in the 2150s doesn't invalidate what happened in "The Trouble With Edward"...it just indicates that Edward's decision to tinker with Tribble biology was a truly dumb one.

I think Benny Russel was a human the Prophets connected to Ben Cisco for the purpose of sending a message, but also I think the people around him didn't actually look how Ben saw them. I think, to tie things back to Ben, their features were mirrored to people Ben related to. The young man who was a son figure to Benny looked like Jake. The female writer looked like Kera, The love interest looked like his girlfriend. It wasn't because they looked similar, but what they meant to him was similar. The head of the publishing company was Odo because because he was someone who played by the books as Odo did. And so on. And maybe he's a distant relation to Ben. But I'll tell you. That moment when he looks in the window and sees a reflection of Ben is something I felt to my core as a writer. Whenever I talk about being a writer on my Channel I use an image of Benny Rustle because how he connected himself to DS9 is how I feel towards my stories. Ok, follow my logic here: Sisko is essentially 1/2 celestial being and 1/2 human. It is entirely possible that Sisko experienced Benny's life, but the details were filled in using Sisko's images and memories as the world details, Dukat and Weyoun being corrupt police, Kira the begrudged female (not really) writier. Etc. In a nutshell, I think the very essence of his prophet half instinctively reached back and allowed him to experience the events of time for a real person, but with him having a ring-side seat for the story, feeling every emotion, every bit of pain, and every ounce of sorrow for the world he experienced. And I think vice versa for Benny Russell...that he was transplanted to Sisko, and the same thing occurred as a consequence...With action there is a reaction kind of thinking.

One of the tech manuals stated that there are different destruct commands to destroy the ship in different ways. Destruct Zero sets off explosive charges that blows up the ship - but also ejects the antimatter fuel pods safely into space - as you wouldn't want a huge antimatter explosion going off in close orbit of a planet or near a space station. Destruct One would set off the antimatter, in a very big bang. Another destruct code would blow the impulse drives. One thing I always wondered about was what happened to the warp drive coils when they blew up the Enterprise in orbit of the Genesis Planet? You can see that the warp drive units themselves didn't blow up - and while the structure around them would probably have burnt up on reentry, the coils themselves, which are designed to handle enormous amount of power and heat, wouldn't be affect by reentry heat at all. The probably crashed landed somewhere on the planet, I would guess.

I believe in Mr. Scott's Guide to the Enterprise, the destruct sequence has two options. 000 destruct 0, and 000 destruct 1. I believe destruct is 0 initiates self-destruct without ejecting the warp core, destruct 1 ejects the core first. I may have that backwards however. I think the notion was one would be less destructive to the surrounding environment...

Kirk’s destruct code - 0-0-0-destruct-0…. Picard uses it in ST: Picard, season 2, episode 1, except it’s “Picard-0-0-0-destruct-0”

I think modern Trek is leaning too heavily on the Member Berries. Now, the writers are purposely putting in obscure references. Picard Season 3 was full of them.

@@RedHeadKevin Picard season 3 is the only good Trek in almost 20 years. 90% of the references had a point. That was Trek. I ve never been a Fan of the D. When they blew it up 30years ago, i was fine, because i love the E. However until Ep 9 i never thought i would need to see the D, to be happy, watching a show. And yes, thats my opinion. If you think its s*** fine, that your opinion

The final code sequence told the computer what kind of destruct sequence would be activated. I don't remember what the 0-0-0-destruct was for, but the final option of zero meant to use the explosives in key areas and to eject the core and antimatter pods. destruct-one would drop the antimatter containment, and I think destruct-two was to force a warp core breach... but i'm not sure about that one.

Dispose experience as Benny Russell could have simply been created by the Prophets and for Sisko to learn from it. Think of it like any other Orb experience. Perhaps Sisko was aware of the real Benny Russell and the Prophets used that knowledge to fashion Sisko's vision/experience.

Unfortunately, the tangential references to Sisko in current shows, and his inclusion in the “God War” comics, are the proof that we will NOT get any kind of real DS9 follow-up in any new shows or movies. This is how IDW and Marvel have handled popular side characters in Star Wars, and I am almost certain that I have seen editors and industry professionals state that this is how they “sweep this truth under the rug”… The character is in a current Story, so the fans of that character have content about them to consume, and the show runners now don’t have to worry about them. Best example: Qi’ra from the Solo movie. She’s had two comic arcs about her, and in one of them she even had possession of Han’s frozen carbonite slab. Plus, she has crossed paths with many main characters. All while fans beg for more Emilia Clarke(Myself included). It is by that logic that I have surmised Paramount has NO PLANS to feature Sisko in Any of the new shows or movies. Looks like the mention of Benny Russell and Lower Decks Easter eggs are all they want to give to DS9 fans. They even had the TNG crew mop up the Changelings. I will NEVER be okay with that. All I can do is shake my head and be thoroughly disappointed.
