I think it is funny that the Gripen is mostly known for being the most unreliable plane on earth while also having the least crashes and highest availability of all modern fighters. It is truly a fantastic plane with a shitty reputation. A reputation that has absolutely nothing to do with the actual airplane and everything to do with people who are pissed about the fact that Sweden with 9 million people managed to produce one of the best planes in the world.

@Bobby Brady comparing it to the f16 C/D or later varients is reasonable enough as they compete directly on the international market, together with fighters like the Rafale. The lightning 2 is a different beast though, both in cost, and range of missions. It is a case of horses for courses, for my money, for lower end NATO, latin american and Asian airforces the gripen is a great all rounder with the lowest maintenance costs per flight hour of any modern fighter. For higher end air forces who need that stealth first strike ability and can afford it the F35 is the best choice.
@Chilukar

@Bobby Brady sorry to burst your bubble but I have worked in several sucessful tender processes representing US companies in selling their weapons systems and training aids. You can live in your echo chamber all you want. Those of us who live in the real world know that the f16 and gripen are direct competitors. There are dozens of countries where they have gotten to a similar stage in "fly off" competitions. You have every right to disagree with senior officers of so many different countries, just as I have every right to tell you that if so many people who know what they are talking about disagree with you, you would be wise to consider the possibility that you are wrong.

The Gripen is an awesome fighter. I have seen it at BIAS 2018. For this aircraft, the powerplant provides power-to-weight ratio comparable to the F-18 used by US Navy and some other European nations(like we've seen one used by the Spanish Air Force). It's super manouverable thanks to it's cannard stabiliser( the small wings you see at the front, usually featured on Soviet/Russian planes). The two crashes seen in the video are caused by them. The cannard system is great in the ideea that it is amazing for manouverability, but you need to be very careful with that thing because the great manouverability comes at the cost of great instability. It can be operated in more conditions than an F-16 requires and can accomodate much more weapons from differnt manufacturers as far as I remember. Basically, if you need a fighter to defend your air-space and do not want to buy a Soviet one, Grippen is what you need. I So that's exactly why we fucking purchased second hand F-16s from Portugal. The cost? Over 700million USD for 12 of them. Basically, we could buy the same ammount of fresh, out of the factory Gripens that could suit our needs perfectly for the price we paid for second hand planes that have nothing to do with our stated purpose. Not having something with F-16 as a plane of it's own, but the efficiency of a weapon/system is determined of how to use them and F-16s are useless for Romania. When the first NATO F-16s showed up some time ago(not ours) they could not even land on our airstrips because they are highly sensitives. They require a lot of time to take off. So if you need to intercept something, like a border country needs, F-16 is one of the least favourable options on the market. Yeah, if you have to bring down or escort a civillian plane, it does not really matter what you get in the air. But those bloody morons want to put us on a warpath with freaking Russia with Hypersonic missiles and such. And their planes are extremely fast(an Su-35 can outrun an F-35 actually, especially in short bursts). By the time we get those planes in the air, they might have nothing to land back on because the airstrip was destroyed. Hungary on the other hand, got their hands on the Gripen. And they did not dare to waste a second showing off with them at the said airshow.

One wrong fact that I noticed. The JAS 39F is not a special version for Brazil but the two seated trainer version of the JAS 39E. Just like the B to the A and D to the C befor them. All countrys that orders an JAS get thier own versions since the platform is so versatile. Last news artical I saw about the Brazil order they have ordered 34 Es and 5 Fs for long term field teasting/replacing thier oldest and most outdated fighters. If SAAB dilivers on all promises on this small order it´s a high likelyhood that Brazil will replace all their fighters with JAS 39E/F to streamline thier airforce with a very cost effcient platform as you mention in the video. Fun sidefact if the JAS hade used the english naming standard it whould be called FAR 39 Gripen (Fighter Attack Reconnaissance)

@7:58 The AIM-9 Sidewinder is a short range (maximum range around 15 nautical miles, or roughly 28 km, on the latest and more advanced variants) infra-red guided missile. It falls into the category of "Heat Seeking" missiles. These types of missiles generally have an infra-red sensor (it's kinda like an infra-red camera) on their tip that search and tracks heat sources and, based on the position within the field of view of the seeker that the heat source is found, the guidance system recieves programmed instructions to maneuver towards the object emiting that heat signature. The Codename "AIM-9" stands for Air-launched Interceptor Missile - Type 9 (I'm not sure what the number is supposed to indicate). The missiles codenamed as "AIM-" are missiles designed to intercept air targets (helicopters, other fighter jets, airplanes, drones, etc). There are also missiles codenamed "AGM-". These stand for "Air-launched Ground-attack Missiles". Missiles designed to destroy ground vehicles, buildings and infrastructure.

A few too many errors. The Gripen isn’t expensive to maintain, quite the opposite the Gripen is extraordinarily cheap to maintain. But South Africa is out of any kind of funds. The Gripen E is the single seater, the F the two seater. Brazil is getting primarily the E. They’re also not getting them shipped as they’re building their own Gripens. The Swedish system that was too expensive before the Gripen wasn’t the J35 Draken but the system 37 Viggen

The version of Gripen that will be delivered to SWAF this year is Gripen E, it have a empty weight of 8000 kg, max payload of 6800kg, ferry range of 4000+km, supercruise and STOL. It is the on!y light fighter with the capacity of a medium weigh fighter. The avionics include GaN AESA with 360 degrees action, which includes powerful electronic warfare and are part if the total sensor fusion, IRST, multiple unjammable datalinks and self protection system at least as effective as passive stealth, which by the way are ot stealth for Gripen E. The fly away price is not cheap, but the cost per flight hour is a fraction of other fighters and the later expences are more than half of the cost for a fighter. Further more gripen have the shortest turn around time of all fighters, wich mean that more fighters can be in the air, where it is a weapon, at a given time and not on the ground where it is a target. Even the upgrade time is much faster than other fighters, due to its modular design, which mean it will stay in the frontline of airpower for the forseeable future.

The Gripen is the "Android of A/C", as such each operator specifies it as they want to suit their needs. The RSA Gripen are equipped with RSA built navigation and radio systems etc... So their Gripens are built to carry the weapons they specified when they were commissioned. And as such, it's up to RSA to keep tabs on their own strategy regarding current and future weapon systems in use.

The data links both fighters have would work well together. The F-35's could focus on BVR engagements, and the Grippen could handle the dog fights. Sweden probably wouldn't need a lot of F-35's. Just a few would greatly enhance their air force.

Us "English guys" have no problem with the pronunciation, only Americans for some reason. When I lived near RAF Lyneham, (after working as an RAF Aerosystems engineer at RAF Cosford.) in southern England, I saw them testing the Gripen vs. the Eurofighter Typhoon, although looking similar, once you look at the engine intakes, that's the first giveaway. The Gripen totally dominated the EF2000 and even the US was interested in buying some, but because of the whole battlefield C&C system computer, the Ternav tactical navigation system, Saab, told the US "no, we refuse to sell you any" concerned about their record in so-called "friendly fire" incidents, friendly fire, isn't.

Coming E/F has some really nice specs. Some of the lowest wing loadings, highest ITR and STR's. Extremely nimble. Extremely wide armament range. First in world built in AESA GaN EW-suite. AESA Swashplate radar with more than 180-degree view. IRST sighting. Supercruise. EW-suite is probably considered best in class, even by the old generation. Networking and full inter-fighter hard to jam datalinks. You can fly silent in a group and share targeting and radar data from a single fighter. Or triangulate from multiple fighters. NATO compatible. Short takeoff & landing. Meteor and IRIS-T missiles, both considered best in class. Gripen was the first fighter to wield the Meteor. Prolly a bunch of other nice stuff too.

Gripen orders threatened F-35 sales in the Nordic countries. The Gripen used the Volvo RM12 engine, which is a derivative of the General Electric F404 engine. Later Gripen variants could mount the GE F414 engine. It is instructive of the amount of soft power that the US holds when, just as negotiations for the Gripen were reaching a climax in Norway and Denmark, suddenly there was an "issue" with export controls of GE technology in those engines. There were also "issues" with export controls of the AESA radar in the Gripen. Key air force personnel in those countries also "suddenly" started to promote the F-35 as an alternative while export control issues were resolved. The result was that Norway and Denmark wound up adopting the F-35.

There are only three fighters in NATO that can take pretty much the whole NATO inventory of AA and ATG missiles and bombs (up to 4000kg). The Tornado (Retired Feb 2019). The Typhoon and the Gripen. For example there are very few US fighters that can carry ASRAAM Meteor and ALRAAM. The US generally only provides for AIM-9 AMRAAM and occasionally ALRAAM for Air to Air (the AIM-7 now being more or less obsolete). I do not know of any US aircraft capable of delivering ALARM (the only Anti-Radar missile that can loitre) and ALARM had a far longer range than HARM (and HARM was actually nearly 50 meters per second slower) for the early HARM models (the new HARM does out-range ALARM hence ALARM being at least in theory retired). The Typhoon can use not only AIM-9, ASRAAM, Meteor, AMRAAM, and ALRAAM, but can also use for example the now more or less obsolete R530, R-550, AIM-7 and Skyflash, and even some of the more obscure missiles like the Israeili Python (which is extremely effective). You may wonder why provision was made for obsolete missile systems. The answer is simple. Even a Meteor or AMRAAM will not take down a fighter every time. These aircraft were developed in the Cold war and the USSR had bucket loads of fighters. It was estimated that at one point the USSR could have sent near 5000 MIG-21s of various types into Europe as a first wave. This would have then been followed by successive waves of progressively more and more modern fighters (or so some thought). Put simply there are just not that many missiles around to only use the latest and greatest. OK so taking out a MIG-21bis would possibly need 2 or 3 obsolete missiles, possibly even 4 if the pilot is really good. But that then saves the better missiles for when you are engaging SU-33 or better. At this point it was not expected that the US would be able to deploy fast enough to Europe to re-enforce the UK never mind some of the countries further away. IE it would take a minimum of 9 hours to get enough F-15's to the UK to make a difference, get them sorted out and into a first combat mission. In reality you could possibly triple this. In 9 hours the USSR could send 4-5 waves and the air war could possibly have been over.

Keep in mind the Gripen is a "Light" fighter. lts not a medium fighter ala F-18, F-35, Rafale, etc. its a budget jet which is a pretty darn good one that fits the "small fighter jet player" countries, ie. Brazil's, or Sweden's needs. Gripen is still not cheap by any stretch but its operation costs are lower. You don't need to look any further than which jet did Israel purchase and immediately launch into operations? F-35... They also decided they like it so much they added a large follow on order to the original purchase. The current flyaway cost of the F-35 is like 90 million and dropping. lt simply ticks all the boxes better than the competition. Providing you have the budget for it. Arguably one F-35 is worth 3-5 of any other 4 gen jet fighters in what it brings to a fight imo.

The JAS-39 Gripen A/B, C/D, E/F variant scheme basically just follows the U.S. standard. For example the McDonnell Douglas F/A-18: A/B is the first generation, where A is the single seat and B is the two-seat versions C/D is basically an overhauled and upgraded version of the A/B (think house renovation) E/F (Super Hornet) is effectively a new plane built on the same basic design as the original F/A-18 but with a larger air-frame, larger wings, more hard-points, more powerful engines, new avionics and materials. JAS-39 variants: A/B is the first generation, where A is the single seat and B is the two-seat versions C/D is basically an overhauled and upgraded version of the A/B (think house renovation) E/F (Gripen NG) is effectively a new plane built on the same basic design as the original JAS-39 but with a larger air-frame, larger wings, more hard-points, more powerful engine, new avionics and materials. They are also using very similar engines. Since the Gripen is a single engine plane the engineers at Volvo modified the original General Electric F404 (used in the F/A-18) to have more thrust and be more reliant. Much of those improvements fed back to GE and the multitude of engine variants that came after. The E/F versions of Gripen uses the General Electric F414-GE-39E which is itself a variant of the F414-GE-400 used in the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet. The "JAS" stands for Jakt (interceptor/fighter), Attack, Spanning (surveillance and jamming). To continue the comparison with U.S. naming conventions this would be equivalent to the F/A-18G nomenclature. Saab is also part of making the Boeing T-X trainer for the U.S. and it kind of looks like the F/A-18 and JAS-39 had a baby girl.

Actually the F-16 is totally unsuitable for the role the Gripen fulfills in the Swedish Air Force. Its operational doctrine during the Cold War, when the Gripen's development started, was to disperse the whole air force in the first hours of a conflict to several hundred improvised air bases, using stretches of the national highway sistem as airstrips. This doctrine required high operational flexibility and technical simplicity of the aircraft, which were to be serviced by reservists in isolated pockets of resistance without the expensive toys found in a major peacetime air base. The low air intake of the F-16 automatically disqualifies it from consideration. Unfortunately this video is in Swedish, but you get the idea when you watch it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_EKUwNUmex0.html BTW Switzerland and Poland also relied on highway airfields to a lesser extend. The USAF in Europe also planned to fly from West German highway strips, mostly A-10As. The threat from the Soviet air forces pushed the Swedes in that direction and curiously enough Taiwan is looking for a similar solution today, but because their main fighter is the F-16 this makes it much harder and because their other main fighter is the Mirage 2000 it is impossible to operate them from highway strips, as the landing speed of the Mirage is over 300 km/h due to its delta wing. The Viggen, the Gripen's predecessor, is alto a delta wing fighter, but its canards reduce the landing speed dramatically to about 175 km/h.
