If you arrive at Narita and don't activate the JR Pass, you can't ride the NEX for free into Tokyo. So is the NEX not worthwhile and is it better to go into Japan another way? 🤔
@tokyocheapo
@tokyocheapo 9 месяцев назад
It’s usually best to activate the JR pass the day you start using the Shinkansen. The NEX costs only a fraction of a Shinkansen journey, so be careful about activating the JR pass and using up any days just for a NEX journey - it means less days for saving money on long distance travel.

I don’t remember what it was called, but there are other trains between Narita and Tokyo. Mine took like 45 minutes and cost $10 or something

One of a major mistake that seldomly people/vloggers talks about is.. **Always have your passport or travel document with you** while traveling Japan. Japanesse Police can detain you without any of those legal proofs if asked. Japanesse Police usually do their random checks on train station exits and public area.

One year ago today I would be landing at Narita Airport. The biggest mistakes I probably made were talking with my travel buddies on the metro (sometimes even with a high tone of voice because of the sound of the train), drinking in public, having a very limited amount of time there I spent very few hours sleeping so during the day I would constantly be chugging canned coffee and energy drinks, and last not buying a 3 day pass on the Suica and instead paying every single trip on the metro singularly, spending a lot more money. Can't wait to go back this summer with a lot more lessons learned in respect and money saving

One thing I had never seen mentioned and I ended up embarrassed about was the no shoes in changing rooms. The attendant chased after me and even though they were lovely about it I wanted to crawl into a hole haha also I never knew the tokyo cheapo team were brits! How exciting! I always feel like all the japan content out there is by Americans and I can never relate when they compare their experience with “home” so I’m chuffed! Randomly found your site while planning my second trip. New subscriber here now! 🌼

The biggest mistake I realized I made was sitting in the priority seating on a subway. A few minutes later I was just looking around and noticed the signs and immediately jumped up to move somewhere else 😬 Edit: Mobal is a good sim card. It cost me $43 for 2 weeks of unlimited data. It was easy to pick up too, I was one of the first people out of the airport. Next time I'll try an e-sim though.

My first and biggest mistake in Japan was getting on the Keisei Skyliner without knowing that SUICA/PASMO doesn't cover the limited express reservation fee. Since it had a separate gate compared to the normal Keisei line, I assumed that it will automatically charge my suica when I got out. But to my horror, I realized we had to get the reservation ticket once I got on the train. Gaijin luck, the ticket examiner let me go by making me pay for the ticket when he came to my seat.

Uh worst thing i did was go to an onsen and not check tattoo policy and was asked to leave. The manager stepped in and said it was fine while they were talking to me though so im not sure if that was soley my fault. Worst thing i saw was a tourist get into the onsen without bathing first. like 8 people around us all gave him 'the look' you all know the look.

My worst mistake was not having a coin purse. I had to use a ziplock bag which was so ghetto. 😂

Regarding Sushi, you should definitely try, but also try something else. The Japanese kitchen is so much more than Sushi and you would really be denying yourself if you don't try many of the other great dishes like Tempura, Yakitory, Ramen, Donburi, Curry, Shabu Shabu, Onigiris etc - not to say the great many chain restaurants like Royal Host just to mention one.

Hey, I just watched your video and I must say that it was really informative and well-made. I was wondering If I could help you edit your videos and also make highly engaging shorts out of them.

I heard that they have stopped producing the SUICA or passmo cards. Is that true? I am visiting Japan next week. Should I need to do any prebooking before reaching there? Please help

You can get a Pasmo passport or welcome suica card. Only lasts 28 days and not refundable though. Or you can go to Osaka and get a iccoca card.

The single worst thing I did on my trip was end up puking on the train. On the day I left Japan, my spouse and I gorged ourselves on the fruit we hadn't eaten yet (satsuma and strawberries) because it couldn't come with us to the US and then quite quickly had to get to KIX from our hotel in Osaka. Between nerves and all the acidic food I was quite nauseated and attempted to at least puke out the door at a stop. No sooner did the door shut than it all come up. At least the stop wasn't crowded and nobody had to walk in it? My hauling luggage everywhere is surely a smaller thing than this.

Fitting room experience: I was handed a piece of white kind of tissue. I thought it was to store my shoes while trying clothes on. Until the girl from the shop shows me I had to put it on my head. Still not sure how to use it in the correct way 😅

The mistakes I made- I didn’t bring a dark colored outfit when I knew I was going to a cemetery ceremony- I cringe every time I see my bright shirt next to everyone else in gray and black in group photo. Also a boo boo to not bring stockings and closed toe shoes I could easily slip on and off. I did remember that older women in particular don’t wear tank tops or generally wear shoulder baring tops, even younger ones tend to wear at least cap sleeves or wide top short sleeves, not spaghetti straps or showing bra straps..

Small but amusing mistake: Thinking the funny coin with a hole but no Western numbers on it was just another version of the 50-yen coin when it's actually 5 yen. Frustrated some poor old soba restaurant waiter when I spent an entire minute trying to pay with it, until I switched it with a 100-yen piece and left confused. Only when I got back to my hotel and did some quick googling did I realise what was wrong.

LOL, that's a classic mix-up! Can't imagine the confusion. Those 5-yen coins can be tricky, especially without Western numbers. At least it made for a memorable moment at the soba restaurant. Bet the waiter had quite the story to share too! 😄

Traveling with my daughter and as our train left the station I noticed the train was filled with all women. Realized I got on the women only train car. Embarrassing.

My biggest mistake in Japan was using a 7/11 toilet on my first day, I didn't know that bidets existed (typical British bloke) and had my rear attacked by a jet of water. Needless to say, anyone shopping in that store heard my suffering.
