Ok I know the Jedi are supposed to be the good guys in Star Wars but after taking a deep looking at the jedi order during the republic era, I began to notice that this order of cape wearing mystics were actually kinda screwed up.

Essentially the Jedi Order believed itself to be completely and absolutely good, therefore it forbade it’s members to have any kind of attachments physically or even emotionally. The problem with with this thinking is that when Jedi came to brushes or even experience the dark side they did not know how to properly deal with the temptations of the Dark Side, which left them MUCH more vulnerable. It’s like a straight A student in high school who had never ever gotten an F moving onto college, they don’t know the experience of failure and how to learn from it. The Jedi were fundamentally flawed the moment they decided to dedicate themselves to the Light, it was only a matter of time when they fell

basically this, the Order decided instead to teach how to deal with attachment and emotion so to not being tempted to the dark side, to take the 'easy' way and forbid them as it this will have resolved everything or as someone in another board pointed out, it probably started as a 'suggestion' that a proper Jedi must avoid attachement so to dedicate fully to the force and be a more impartial negotiatior and later when the order fossilized it become a dogma. And just movie and tv shows clearly demonstrate how this was true only in theory, many jedi/padawan pairing act like parent/children or older sibling/younger sibling even if they don't admit because organic being usually crave attachment and emotional closeness
@mjfan8704

And yet the Jedi allowed the Master/Apprentice bond. Isn't that a little hypocritical. They claim to have no need for attachment yet that attachment is required to pair a master with a student.

No, you do make a good point. Maybe in the distant past, the Jedi were exactly the peace keepers they imagine themselves to be. Over time though, they themselves became complacent; comfortable in their small role with the Republic, becoming just as corrupt as the system they defended.
@SchultzDorinda
@SchultzDorinda 3 года назад
@Ignacio Jimenez Anglinthey were because they let the corrupt Republic dictate their actions. Were they still true to their beliefs, they wouldn't have gotten involved in the war, and maybe even went to neutral territory to avoid the conflict. They are peacekeepers not soldiers. If the peace is broken then they have nothing to keep or fight for, and thus have nothing to do the the government who is itself at war. They would have done what Satine believed they should have done. They would have went only to places when the War hasn't reached yet and would've kept the peace there.
@theapexfighter8741
@theapexfighter8741 Год назад
I personally think you are wrong. The Jedi weren’t blinded by light, they were blinded by politics. They became servants of the republic first and not servente of the Force. BUT, They were still doing more of It’s will than most. Of course, Palpatine had a hand in it as he orchestrated the war, putting the whole Jedi Order in a bad spot. Qui Gon Jinn is who was right the entire time. If it wasn’t for Palpatine and the Republic, the Jedi wouldn’t have lost their way. They were still heroes in my opinion, they were just not good enough to stop what was going to happen.

The Jedi are the ones that unbalanced the force... ...Holy shit.
@davidgiles4681
@davidgiles4681 5 лет назад
The polarization of both sides unbalanced the Force. The Sith used emotion as their base reason to exist and abandoned intellect as a balance. The Jedi used intellect as their base reason to exist and abandoned their human emotions. If you mixed the two, you have the Gray Jedi (of whom both sides did not appreciate).
@ravenstrategist1325

@@davidgiles4681 Sith used intellect all the time. Their focus changed by individual by individual. You know geniuses like Plagueis and so forth. Loads of intellect.
@davidgiles4681
@davidgiles4681 5 лет назад
@@ravenstrategist1325 Yes and no. Yes, they used intellect. But, emotions powered the intellect. Depending upon the emotional value they put on a certain act or set of acts, thier emotion powered the intellectual pursuit of those actions. Do not get me wrong. Emotions and intellect must be balanced. the balance is that Sith had the pendulum swing more on the emotion powered intellectual pursuits. An example is the destruction of the Jedi. that goal was (in some areas righteous anger). But, it also created individuals who had potentially unstable personalities. In order for a Sith to become a master, he had to kill his master - only the strong survive. that in it's own right is valid. In Nature, only the strong survuve and continue the order (Bane's Rule of Two). The Jedi were the complete opposite. they had intellect that suppressed emotion (not sex, love, family, attractions [that could cause emotional out put - that would potentially lead to hate ... dark side]). the Jedi took emotions and buried them under intellect. they too had potentially unstable personalities. But, the fascade of "intellectual pursuit" - over the emotional equation also had it's negative results. the Jedi worked as an organization - that is good. But, this Org was based upon intellect overcoming emotional arguements. Anakin Sky Walker proved that emotions were not correct (if left unchecked and unbalanced - suppose if Anakin said, "I am married and I will be a Jedi. I do not care. You take me as I am or not at all.". The council would be forced to either take him as he was or discharge him. Luke Shywalker was married to Mara Jade and had a son. He allowed "attachments" and the "new order" worked because of it. I am sure that some "disputes" rose. His emotional "attachment" to Pademe was his downfall. The Sith used the supression of his wife and future kid(s) as a lever to turn him to the dark side. If the Jedi had balanced "attachments" and intellect, the dark Side would not have had that sway. You see that the Jedi did not value emotion and intellect as two sides of the same coin. So did not the Sith see that intellect and emotion were the same sides of the coin. To balance this, one must have emotional contacts and or "attachments" and still be able to use intellect to reach the goal. the person(s) must then be balanced in both - not one tipping the other. I used Vulcans (ST) as an example. Every 7 yrs, they must mate or die (physically).

The Sith? One guy and an apprentice. Yes, Anakin brought balance to the force by destroying the existing Jedi order. My confusion comes at why Yoda or any other Jedi never thought that concept through. like... "Hmmmm triumphant we are and have been. To bring balance, our deaths it would mean!"

Agreed. My point was about the Jedi attitude about this "Chosen One" prophecy. At the time that Quai Gon "determined" that Anakin was the Chosen One, as far as they knew there literally were no Sith. I am just mystified at the plot writing. How can the Jedi think that "bringing balance" would mean anything good for them? It would be like being in Vegas... having won a million dollars at craps... and some bimbo whispers in your ear, "Bet it all on the next roll, it will bring balance to your bank account!" Ummm ok... "I think I will call it quits for the night." LOL

Actually the canon states that the light side IS the force in balance and the dark side is basically an imbalance in the force. I think the issue is they asked people to do things that were unnatural, or were beyond the capacity for most humans. Yeah, OK jealousy is bad, but people need attachments. It's normal. Getting married was not a light side activity, and in fact, I would suggest that allowing marriage could have been an incentive to greater commitment to the Jedi, because they wanted to protect not just some vague notion of 'democracy' or 'The Republic' but their own families. Banning attachments and emotions was seen as a way of protecting people, but in itself resulted from fear and proved to be counter-productive.

I admit, you aren't wrong on several of your points. But I DO have counters to several of them. First wit regards to the child soldiers: Anakin and by extension Ashoka are NOT "normal" padawans, they are people that WANTED to get involved. In Episode 1 Qui Gon told Anakin specifically NOT to get involved, and to "find a safe place and stay there" True he did bring him INTO a battle, but only in so far as to 1) keep an eye on him and 2) because there was literally no better place to bring him (the planet was blockaded and the entire city of Theed occupied) The "role" of a Padawan is to watch, observe, learn, and ask questions. So Ashoka and Anakin directly involving themselves was, unorthodox but they did so because they believed they could handle that involvement...and they did so quite well for the most part. "Only a Sith deals in absolutes: You cited Anakin killing Dooku, and Mace attacking Palpatine. You forget that Anakin was VERY hesitant to kill Dooku, and likely would not have had Palpatine not ordered him to, remember Palpatine was the Chancellor so this was akin to an executive order, which directly violated the Jedi Code. To Windu now, recall that he initially went to ARREST Palpatine, and bring him in alive. In addition, it took the deaths of THREE Jedi master, and several minutes of pitched battle for him to adopt the stance of Killing Palpatine.

Recall that the Jedi were NOT going to take him in, he had no credits, or means to support himself. Padme had no residence to let him stay at (she was not a senator at the time) And he had no access to food. Qui-gon had access to republic credits for the initial diplomatic mission but couldn't just GIVE them away as he saw fit. Leaving Anakin on Coruscant would have been the absolute worst thing for him...because not only would it have left him completely alone, it would have left him in the PERFECT place for Palpatine to get his claws into him.

Respectfully Cen2050, why didn't Qui-Gon "Suggest" that Anakin remain with Boss Nass? He was nowhere near the fighting in *any* of the aspects of the Battle of Naboo. Furthermore, one thing that was *not* pointed out in the video (as far as "Child Soldiers" is concerned) is the age of the Clones. Not only were they slave soldiers who were never given a choice, but due to the accelerated aging, they were only ten years old at the start of the war. The use of the Clones also brings up another thought about how the Jedi value lives; the clones continued to age quite rapidly. While I don't know how long the Clone Wars lasted, Temura Morrison, the actor who played Jango Fett in the second prequel also played Commander Cody in the final one, appearing to be somewhere around forty years of age, if he were an unmodified human. That leads me to ask at how young of an age would the Republic expect their Clone protectors to have age related health issues? At thirty (assuming any survived to reach that age), they'd have the health problems of a sixty year old unmodified human. By the time one would be old enough to serve as the President of the United States (thirty five), he's reached the physical age of mandatory retirement here. "Life creates and shapes The Force," yet the Jedi seem to have little regard for individuals within the scope of The Force, except for those who fanatically tow the line within their order.

Just for reference, Jeff Anderson, the Clone Wars lasted 3-4 years. Started in 22 BBY, ended in 19 BBY.
@Cen2050
@Cen2050 6 лет назад
Jeff Anderson, I fully admit I did not consider that and concede that point. The ONLY justification I can offer is concern/suspiscion that the Gungan force would be completely routed and their encampment would be subsequently found/annihilated...or worse just bombarded from space. Whereas Theed was too important to attack from space. You are also NOT wrong about the clones, But I humbly and respectfully disagree with your assessment of their treatment and occasional mistreatment at the hands of the Jedi: The concept of them being "child soldiers" while accurate technically is not accurate physically or, more importantly, physiologically: Just because a humanoid has only lived for 6 years does not mean they have the developmental progress of a 6 year old human. There are sentient races in other science and fantasy games, and series that only live for 6-10 "earth" years. What we are essentially looking at is a genetically altered "offshoot race" of Humans that have accelerated aging/learning. The clones were specifically, genetically crated for combat. WE, as viewers know this is not morally or ethically right. But pull an Obi-Wan, and look at it from the clones point of view: 99% of them were shown more than fair and equitable treatment, from their Jedi Generals: Generals who were, for the most part, NOT happy with the situation but had to chose the lesser of two evils. Generals who DID mourn the loss of their men, because they each had a distinct identity in The Force. War, it is said, brings out the worst in people. In the case of the Star Wars universe, that meant the creation of a clone army, and the transition of a legendary (if secretive) organization of diplomats, peacekeepers and philosophers into a military command structure.

@@Amell_Wesker In the movies, particularly in the prequels, that is absolutely true. The Jedis teachings and training methods emotionally/psychologically destroy anyone who has ever known healthy emotional support, real family, and real love. Basically, anyone who has any sort of understanding what it means to be a regular person with healthy emotional support, personal interests, and close relationships outside of Yoda’s space soldier cult of total emotional/individual:psychological denial and detachment would lose their mind trying to fit in with them, and then become Sith when they could no longer deal with the Council’s bullshit anymore and thought all their options to do any better or find support were exhausted. It’s tragically ironic that Anakin Skywalker is actually more like the ideal Jedi knight that Obi Wan, Yoda, and the Council kept trying to force him to be in the prequels as Darth Vader after he gets burned up, put in that life support suit, and loses everyone else he cared about (at least in part because of his own doing, though also because of the Council and Obi Wan). He becomes more apathetic and detached, learns to delude himself with that whole “it’s for the greater good” mantra that they all taught him to use to rationalize the atrocities he commits against anyone who seems to get in the way of that mission, learns to blindly and obediently serve Sidious and the Empire, regardless of the person’s age, ability, creed, guilt, innocence, or race. While he still has adrenaline junkie, blind rage, and manic episodes on occasion, he’s far more focused and emotionally self-controlled than he was in his younger years before going completely off the rails. While he’s not wholly innocent himself, the prequels are a pretty tragic story of how the road to hell is paved with good intentions and how to create a monster.

It is interesting as well as highly relevant to note that Anakin Skywalker's attachments werent what lead him to the dark side, but rather the Jedi Order's rejection of attachment that made his fall all but inevitable. If Anakin were permitted to save his mother months before he actually did leave to find her, back when he first had the dreams about her, he could have gotten to her in time. And if Anakin had felt able to take his dreams of Padme's death to the Jedi Elders without fear of reprisal, they could surely have advised him on how best to handle the situation and they could have worked out the situation together, logically and without the need to abandon the light side of the force. The Jedi order was its own undoing. For balance to be attained, the order - and not only the Sith - had to fall.

It was a case of the Jedi doing what they thought was right but at the same time so caught up in what they're doing they just lose themselves. Fact is they screwed up Anakin by using him as their Mule when he knew himself it wasn't right on certain things they asked him to do. Was it wrong, was it jist what the had to do I don't know. But he was elevated up the ranks of responsibilities out of the rule books and he felt that wasn't fair to others. They really went wrong when they asked him to be their snitch against the Emperor. He felt he himself was a legit man at the time but noticed there was some shady business going on and he had already been taking his information to them on his own as the Emperor was doing everything he could to keep An akin at his side. So they asked him to he a spy against the Emperor which probably would have accomplished the same thing he was already accomplishing but he didn't want to pretend to be an ally knowing he was just doing it to get information which pretty well set him over the edge. Anakin was a kid of high morality who lived a hard life and around immoral people and hated living in that life so he would have done what was right even if not asked as he felt it was in his moral nature to do so if it helped moral people. What they asked him to do was against his morality and inevitably he lost faith in the people who claimed to be his protectors. Frustration and anger at that point just moved him to the dark side and the rest is history. Again were the Jedi "bad guys" I don't believe so. Good people in a situation where they sometimes have to make out of the box choices. Anakin grew up as a slave worker. He wouldn't understand that.

E. B. In the words of Spock, older people are "emotionally compromised". Anakin was already compromised when he left his mom and lost Qui-Gon at age 10 not to mention he had a Sith lord posing as a politician manipulating his mind throughout his Jedi training. It took the death of Shmi and his fear of losing Padme to push Anakin over to the dark side to the point where he becomes Darth Vader. Luke had it worst because he had to watch Owen, Beru, and Obi-wan die right in front of him. Then, he had his hand chopped off by Vader and went apeshit on Vader when he threatened to turn Leia to the dark side. The only reason Luke didn't go down the same path as Vader did is because: -he found out Darth Vader is his father. -he didn't have any Sith lords mind-twisting him since childhood like Vader was. -he doesn't have a mother or a girlfriend to worry about like Vader did. AND -he's not easily fooled like Vader was. If only Kylo Ren had followed Luke's example instead of Vader's.

I agree agree agree. However, if the Jedi, namely Obi-Wan had given Anakin's dreams credence (and Padme' too) and said ok, let's go check it out, after all they were in the business of saving innocence, then his mother would've been saved early on (as she was taken a month b4 when Anakin's "dreams" began) and he would not have been so uncontrollably angry as she'd still have been alive. So you could argue, it was still the Jedi's fault. As was them pushing Anakin to spy on his friend and use other than honorable methods to achieve their goals in RotS, going against their own "Jedi way". Anakin was manipulated by both sides, with the Jedi really only interested in controlling him and his prophecy fulfillment. IMO.

When have the sith ever forbade love? That has never been a thing. If anything a lot of sith shy away from it because many see how it can be a weakness and exploited. Like Malgus... who also saw how it could give him more power... and even after killing his love, he loved her. But its never been a rule, and many have loved And yes, the sith are about freedom, more specifically personal freedom. The entirety of the sith code is about that; the more power you have the more freedom that power affords you. Strength -> Power -> Victory -> Broken Chains -> Force = Free A quote that sums up sith philosophy is "Only those with the strength to seize their destiny deserve to have one". @Emmett Leone-Woods Sith arent suppose to allow their emotions to control them, they're suppose to use their emotions to fuel their power. In many ways, a prime example of what a sith is, is Malgus. The moment he realized his love for Eleena was detrimental to him and his growth as a sith, he decided to kill her. He still loved her, and he used the emotions he had for her and her death, give him a great deal more power. If his emotions controlled him, he wouldnt have made that decision. Yea, there are sith that get lost in their emotions, but sith are suppose to be the ones in control of themselves and nothing else

JohnnyNismo who the fuck said "balance" was intrinsically good?
@kennethkates3140
@kennethkates3140 6 лет назад
david, "balance" may or may not be intrinsically good or bad, hence why it is called balance. Balance denotes a fair blend of two opposing forces, and "true balance" would a blend that allows no, or limited, movement toward either force without an increase of force from one side or the other. And "perfect balance" would be like "true balance" but would not allow any increase in force on either side and would remain in "perfect balance." But to achieve any form of "balance" you need input from two side, preferably from opposing forces, in an even amount. Otherwise, be the force good or evil, it would be "unbalanced" and that is intrinsically not good. And that is something that both the Jedi and Sith knew, the difference is the Sith sought to unbalance the force in there favor, and the Jedi ignored it in their teaching, even actively sought to suppress voices that raised how unbalanced in the "Light" the Jedi Order had become.

grey jedi arent greater masters of the force; there hasnt been anything in starwars to imply that utilizing both light side and dark side aspects of the force makes you more powerful. It gives you more options, yes.. but that doesnt make you more potent or provides a greater magnitude of power. And if your goal is to constantly maintain balance within yourself, and not move freely... you're restricted, just like if you were to limit yourself to either the light or the dark

Some ways to fix the Jedi: 1. Jedi Knights/Master raise force sensitive children alongside their parents, maybe multiple per teacher in some kind of schooling community. That might help making them understand what is right to do but without cutting them off and life potentially ruining them. 2. See more Grey and be a bit more open and transparent to things outside the Order. 3. Controlling emotions doesn't mean shutting them off. Emotion can and often will come suddenly then overwhelm and that is the biggest risk of it. Jedi should be prepared for that and learn to still keep a calm mind during this times to decide what is best. 4. Allow teenager/adults to be taught Jedi but still be mindful and careful. Even (slightly) messed up minds can be brought back to the right path and stick to it when done right. 5. Get rid of that arrogance and think more thoroughly what you do, without believing your above laws and regulations. Although, even politicians of our time have something called "political immunity" that protects them from immediate repercussions, even if they drive kill some civilians so they can do their job. But they at least aren't absolutely immune to punishments. It's just way more complicated to hold them responsible for their actions 6. Teach more about the Dark Side and all it's temptations with the many forms it can take on and how and why you should resist it. Surely this won't solve all the issues and there will still be those loosing their path because that's just the (human) nature of sentient beings but I believe it would be better like this.

@shawnaustin9907
@shawnaustin9907 6 лет назад
Anakin wasn't going to kill Dooku until Palpatine goaded him into it; he then says he shouldn't have done it because it wasn't the Jedi way. Mace Windu was also violating the Jedi way when giving into his fear that Palpatne was too dangerous to live. So this was not behavior taught or championed by the jedi, quite the opposite. I could be wrong, but I don't believe children were ever taken against the will of their parents because they were force sensitive. It was simply that the parents had a choice of allowing them to train with the Jedi from when they were young or never be able to join or be trained. Asking such a thing of a parent is 'bold' to say the least, but as long as it is optional and there is no coersion, it cannot really be referred to a 'baby stealing'. Younglings in general, were not warriors. Ahsoka was young, but also an alien, so who knows what human psychology applies there. Anakin was at least 18 when the Clone Wars started, and in the actual live action films, Jedi children were never a part of the war effort.

The Jedi may not have been perfect but it's very hard for me to understand the point of view of people who say they are no better than the Sith. Knowing that the Star Wars Universe presents a galaxy where multiple force sentient people exist, that these force powers make them way more powerful than the average living being and give them the option to completely dominate non force users, I surely prefer to have the ones who invoke altruism, restraint, peace and harmony over the ones only believe in passion, strength and power. I prefer a Jedi Order, with all of it's flaws, that at least TRIES to search for the greater good, than a Sith Order seeking only power and personal satisfaction. The Jedi may have broken some of their core beliefs in war with the Sith, but I believe the possibility of seeing a Sith Order emerge is even worse, and therefore justifies it in part. Realising that the Jedi Order is not perfect, while saddening, is not a reason to lower it to the levels of the Sith Order.

Pureblood Sith are not creatures born out of sith alchemy that is pure bs. You cant justify murdering an entire species just because "ermahguurd ewiiil", because guess what, it is all about perspective's and that the Jedi are as genocidal as the Sith Order was proven many many times. So don't try that angle the only thing you can throw at a Sith is that their society is build on a Caste System and the poor are treated like shit but thats not a thing in what would happen in the Republic right? RIGHT? Oh i forgot , the poor in the republic don't even have a opportunity to rise up because entire families stay poor for generations eventhough they are capable. Oh and i would really overthink your position about genocide because if we use that parameters than you are using then we should purge the whole middle east and africa, because they have archaic societies where murder and slavery is their daily life.

Imran I don't know much about Star Wars history not related to the original 6 trilogy but I still prefer the Jedi to the Sith and would certainly prefed living in a Republic run by the Jedi who seem focused towards altruism as much as possible than an empire run by the Sith who only seem to be interested in personal gains. Judging by the original trilogy, it's kinda hard to say Palpatine wasn't the bad guy by plotting against the Republic and preparing Jedi genocide for decades. Concerning the genocides committed by the Jedi that I didn't know of, they must obviously represent a very dark page of the Jedi Order and a very difficult decision for them to make at the time, one that, tough questionable, was probably made with the greater good intention of not having selfish Sith run the Galaxy. What I like about order under the Jedi, is that you could, as a civilian, present this fact of genocide committed by them and expect them to admit the wrong that there was in it, even tough they did it for the greater good, or what they tought was the greater good. Put a Sith in front of the same facts, and he would probably laugh at you as he doesn't care about any morals other than personal gain and power. Laugh at you that is, if he doesn't decide to directly electrocute you with Sith lightning for is own amusment. Doing something bad for a greater altruist good, or what is tought to be (tough always condemnable, and I'm sure the Jedi had a great deal of remorse following their act), does not equal doing something bad for the sheer sake of personal gain and power. You can discuss a wrongful act committed by a jedi, but you can't discuss one committed by the Sith, as they do not care about right and wrong, unlike the Jedi. The Jedi are therefore not perfect and perhaps even less than that, but their quest to be good (such a hard thing to do when you think about it) makes them better than the Sith and their quest for ultimate selfishness. Going back to what I know better, the 6 movie trilogy, it is quite evident that the Jedi are better than the Sith. In the Republic, the Jedi do not seek ultimate power but only to be a positive guiding force in that Republic, aknowledging that not everything is up to them, while Palpatine just wants everything for himself, even tough large segments of his galactic population do not seem satisfied when he becomes empreror. And he doesn't care one single bit about it, just like he didn't care blowing up entire planets as a show of force.
