10 Strengths of a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP)

Drama queens, crybabies, whiners, wet blankets - Highly Sensitive People (HSP) have been labelled all of these things and more, when the truth is, there’s a lot of things most people fail to understand about the concept. HSP was originated by Dr. Elaine N. Aron (1996), and it refers to an inherent, biological predisposition some people have to process and perceive information on a much deeper level. If you’re an HSP, then you think and feel things with greater intensity, in a way that many others can’t understand. Sometimes, HSP are mistaken as empaths. Do you know someone who might be an HSP? Do you agree with these signs?

@@Nick-tz3ke it's ok to cry if you're a Male and hell I would just yeet those boys if they saw a Male crying and telling them if they're a girl- And just because you're a Male doesnt mean you cannot cry, it doesn't make you look weak, it makes you look you went something bad and serious. When I saw my brother cry for the first time, I didnt know what to do since I always comfort girls and my brother was older than me. It made me realise boys also cry, and go through tough times like girls do too. So Sometimes, you have to let it out too. It doesnt matter whether you're emotional or stoic, you need to let it out. (Its bad and it's not mentally healthy keeping your feeling inside a bottle and not opening it to someone. You understand right?) Videos like this don't really help either. The video had trouble trying to convince us that some of these traits were positive. It didn't even explain what "sensitive" actually means, just tied it in with empathy and mediation (so it was double counted). And ultimately, these are more feminine traits. Not too say men don't/shouldn't have them, we should, but they do not complement us in the same way. They do not fulfill us the same way it would for women. We can have feminine traits but they need to be expressed in a masculine way. I think I'm an HSP as a man. But it has become a strength for me. I learned to deal with stress in healthy ways early on. I can confront others without offending them, take the lead so that others don't cause more problems. I'd say boundaries are the most important. They're good to prevent yourself from being over influenced by the empathy you feel, to prevent people from manipulating you, or taking advantage of your kindness. It took some time though. I've been described as both an a-hole and a kind, good friend by the same people. Lol.

On the contrary, I find it easy to connect with other blokes who also have HSP, HSPs have a tendency to know who are similar of mind, so you end up talking to them more, rather than those who are not. I guess if there are no other HSP guys around, then yeah, it could be quite a lonely experience.

My biggest problem is that I can't understand when people are being mean to me or they are just teasing. Also I am not really good at criticism. And that's something I wish I can work on
@dc656
@dc656 3 года назад
I'm not good with criticism either, it feels like my world is slowly crumbling for some reason when I am criticized. But I've been trying to work on myself based on the constructive criticism from my supervisor and couple of my close friends, and when they give me recognition that I am improving I feel extremely proud of myself. That is the double edged sword of being hypersensitive, when things go wrong you can end up experiencing harsh pain and anxiety, but when things go right it feels like you can take on the world.

I've always been a HSP. I cry whenever, when I'm happy, sad, angry, frustrated, etc. I want to stop showing it to people but it's hard. And people can be very mean. I'm sensitive towards people's behaviours and emotions. I can tell what you're feeling and act accordingly. I don't know people don't understand that it's not a bad thing. I don't know why they don't let people express their emotions. But if you're one of us, know it's not wrong of you to be like this.

that could also be living life to the fullest though. if you are doing something you enjoy while in your room then thats one way to live life how you want. i usually shut myself away from life most of the time as well and just sit around playing video games because its what i enjoy doing and it doesnt cause me huge amounts of stress. its something i can go back to after the more important things in life are taken care of as well so that i can unwind, relax and enjoy myself. some people will argue that living life to the fullest means getting out there and actually doing things all the time. but for others like myself, its as simple as enjoying the smallest things life has to offer. Having a house to live in, being able to keep up your basic survival needs with consuming food and liquid, and having people to talk to on occasion that you are on very good terms with are the main things i think about every day. and while i might not be as popular or as outgoing as others, i always think of how good i have it compared to others and how carefree life can be in my shoes

I grew up with an extremely abusive mother and father. I was taught at a very young age that "men" aren't supposed to cry. I've been called every name in the book by my parents and siblings and yes, have been told countless times that I'm "too sensitive". I was usually singled out the most by my parents and siblings as the "punching bag" of the family because it was extremely easy to get a reaction from me through physical and emotional abuse. I realized very early that if I didn't want to get my nose, arms, legs, face, broken and bloodied or my teeth knocked down my throat, that I had to bury that trait deep down and fight against it with all my will power. So I can tell you, as an HSP, crying isn't always a good indicator that you possess that trait (among other indicators that might apply to the vast majority of people with this trait) Your upbringing can have a huge affect on how your HSP trait manifests. I'm in my late 20's now and suffer from EXTREME anxiety, depression, insomnia, and a list of other disorders. Please, if any of you reading this has a child that's an HSP, please please please recognize it as a real thing and please allow it to inspire you to treat your youngster like the incredibly special person they are. I'm not saying spoil them rotten and follow them around with a silver spoon. But these kind of people do require a bit more understanding, patience, and love than most. If you raise your HSP child right, they can grow into the most beautiful and creative and artistic individual you've ever known. But be warned, if you treat your HSP child like they are just too sensitive and need to be roughed up, misunderstood, and beat in order to become "normal" the only thing you'll accomplish is creating a person who is in constant agony, pain, and depression for their ENTIRE LIFE. You will probably lose that child to suicide or drug overdose later in their life. I honestly don't know how I'm even still alive. Please just be patient with your HSP kids.... You have the power to create a wonderful person OR an extremely dysfunctional and miserable person who's every waking minute is literal torture. It's too late for me. The damage has already been done. But maybe this comment can help some other young HSP have a childhood I would be envious of. A healthy childhood full of love and acceptance and patience. Please allow my broken spirit to become a beacon of light for someone else in their formidable years.

I grew up the same way... tho i was taken from my bionarcissists(ya BOTH bio parents are/were narcissists lovely eh?) & raised by bio fathers younger sister & her husband..1st year of my life frankly im lucky i made it that year! At 6 my drunken fall down f in the ass bio father told me who i really was & LET THE GASLIGHTING BEGIN! NO1 gave me answers for shit, few years later the Dad(uncle) that raised me started beating the snot out of me.. it got witnessed by outsiders & teported i was made the 1 in the wrong. So my 9 yr old self realized there was no help, no1 gave a flyin shit. My 10 year old self made her 1st suicide attempt. My bio parents tried killing me, ive tried, exhusband tried, ive been shot, stabbed, 3 serious car accidents..i was always a passenger, & diagnosed with cancer.. Ive jad 3 families..my bio family, adopted family & had 3 sons of my own & each one was destroyed & taken away from me. IVE LITERALLY been seperated from my own kids for 22 yrs & was 'allowed' nearly 10 together split in 2, 8yrs together & 17 yrs apart & fate alloted me a mere taste for close to 4 yrs of having a small taste of 'normalcy', beforefate stepped in ince again..at the same time I received my cancer diagnosis. Repeatedly being told 'life is what u make it' when every step u make to move ur way 8nto a life that u only get to watch everyone around u have. I only knew 2 emotions.. anger & EMPATHY.. sympathy & empathy are NOT the same.. I DONT have sympathy.. couldnt give a flying shit, I DO however have EMPATHY ONLY for those that are worthy of my emparhy..children, creatures, vulnerable people that didnt bring their vulnerability onto themselves. I DO NOT cry unless Im alone, i was never able to show weakness because then Id be preyed on or somebodys punching bag, I didnt have a startle response up until about 8 months ago... to acheive that I moved myself into the middle of nowhere, kept to myself for 12 yrs had very limited contact with anything, everything & everyone aside from my 2 cats & 2 dogs. Had 1 of my buddies(i dont actually have human friends my cat & dog are my friends because theyre everything humans provwn me that humans cant be..loyal)catch me off guard..i jumped about 3 ft high & he nearly got K.Oed! Im not liking the startle response crap of all things daye could return to me a startle respinse is definitely not in the top 10 FOR SURE! I am sensitive, almost to a psychic degree, nor being able to show or feel any emotions growung up, not being permitted positive bonding with anyone, neing abused mentally physically emotuonally i never learned how to regulate my emotions... i also dont like being touched or crowded.. 'Reactive Attachment Disorder' made me a bery unique mother of 3 young boys. I foyght luke HELL so they wete able to learn it was ok to FEEL, to cry if ur sad, feel secure if ur scared ect ect..& those boys were well behaved well adjusted smart caring pilite boys.. that grew into well adjusted productive members of society. JUST BY THE GOOD GRACES of the only luck U have..longevity.. I figure im either immortal or the freaking antichrist with my ability to escape death as much as i have! I WANT U TO KNOW that I yave a good undrstanding of EXACTLY what u have gone thru, people like us are here for a reason..not sure what it is but its gotta be good humanity changing shit with all the life lessons & pain weve endured.. our exsistances may be lonely & heartbreaking but DONT EVER GIVE UP BEING U.. HSP that hasnt managed their intense feelings usually end up with loads amount of stress, anxiety and depression. This shows that they have acquired a different way to desensitize. Usually this happens when the individual is surrounded by people who shunned them by its livelihood. Also taken advantage of people who use their empathy to seek attention from them in a unhealthy manner. Now I dont know if Good Will is a genetic trait or aquired trait or a natural function. All I know is that an act of good will activates the reward system which makes you feel good when you do something good. Beating someone down also rewards the brain cause victory, who doesnt like to win a fight or in control? This creates a unhealthy cycle of abuse and its harder to win against it the more you stay and fight back, others strategies is to run and seek where you are accepted and loved, to seek yourself and love yourself. HSP some of you might be depressed or anxious cause of past experiences, allow yourself to live today again like you used to.

I'm glad you mentioned depression, anxiety & stress. Yes, Yes, Yes. That's how my brain and body react when overloaded with feelings and thoughts. Now that I understand what is happening I can unplug by being alone and doing something creative like going for a bush-walk , reading fiction , even cooking or cleaning. I am surprised that it is as common as 1 in 5 because I find it quite rarely in other people. Unlike Narcissism that is so common.Now I am going to watch- How to Ignore People- on youtube.

I believe this statement is true. I'm struggling with all sorts of stress, anxiety & depression... but I believe I'm an HSP who grew up with a sociopathic mother & sister. I used to love drawing all the time all while my mother would bark at me saying that will never make me any money. I went away for a summer only to come home to bare walls in my bedroom-- my mom tore down & threw all of my art away. My sister used to tell me that it was more enjoyable to wait for my reaction to sad parts in a movie & laugh at me (all while a touching sad scene is happening in the movie) than it was to watch the movie she paid for. After she literally threw my pet hamster against the wall & killed it, she told me I deserved it for tattling on her. Many other contributing factors prevent HSPs from embracing their HSP-ness & instead try their hardest even after realizing this to suppress any and all initial emotional knee-jerk reactions to anything. I've become so numb to many things. I'm not all sunshine & tears like I used to be. I don't think I could ever go back to being anything like that, if I ever was that way to begin with.

HSPs feel deeply, they truly know emotions. They are rare and yes, best friend material. I think Professor Charles Xavier is HSP. He know how’s it like to be in pain emotionally. Soft hearted, gentle and calm. He cares about mutants and humans. He is sensitive and empathetic. Charles is a good listener. Which is why he is the best emotional support for Magneto and Wolverine. One of the few Characters that Logan respects.

But over the years I experienced several traumas from bullying to sexual/emotional abusive cases. After 25 years I’m finally realizing all these traumas and working through them with a therapist. All the nice traits of being HSP were just frozen and that’s sad to me that I could have been enjoying the past 12-13 years to the fullest but I was too numb. But it’s never to late! I’m just starting to get myself back and that is the most wonderful thing. So everyone out there who experienced similar things, never give up!

Can relate. I used to be like that alot and it turned into an addiction, a co-dependancy situation of me and another person. It's a good trait to "be the change you want to see in the world" like if you have faced many hardships and being alone and friendless, being a person that gives struggling people an ear to vent to once in a while or give them some advice that you wish someone else had told you when you were younger... But don't let it become your entire life. You are worthy to better your own life, if you give all your time to try to fix someone elses life you will 1: Put your own life on hold and never get better. 2: make the other person lazy so they don't want to try to fix their own life. But also don't just lend out your ear and sympathy to just anyone, that's how you attract leeches. People have to prove to you first they are a good decent person too so the friendship is beneficial for the both of you. It shouldn't be one sided. These days I'm way more choosy of what people I give my time to. I will wait a long time before I feel like I can trust someone and call them a friend. People that try to force being my friend super quickly makes me show my iron thorns because my safety is more important than if someone perceives me as a bitch. That exact scenario happened to me just a couple of weeks ago at work and said colleague got super butthurt just because I told them "no". I'm done being a people pleaser. I'm learning to embrace being a bitch without feeling guilty about it. That is my goal.

This video changed my views of myself. My whole life, I was told my feelings and acuteness to my emotions made me weak, emotionally unstable and a crybaby/drama queen. Thank you for showing us HSPs how needed we are in the world and how the way I am is not a weapon, but a gift to be embraced, esteemed and celebrated.

There is one thing that I'd like to add regarding the ability to take good decisions. Because they are so empathetic, HSPs are more likely to difficulties in setting their own boundaries as a child (and if they do not learn how to set healthy boundaries, also in later years). An HSP might empathise with, e.g., a parent who gets stressed or angry if the HSP child does not want to behave in the way that the parent wants it to behave. The child learns that following her/his own feeling/senses is wrong because it is hurtful to the parent. This is how HSPs might face difficulties in taking decisions, and they need to learn to reconnect with their inner compass.

@plumereveuse5183 4 года назад
@@zozoplans It's not a question of accepting people for who they are. Of course this is something that we should all do. But I don't think being in tune with oneself and living life to the fullest are things that are innate. However, those are "traits" that are correlated with happiness. When you know what you really want and try to live accordingly, then you're happier. I just made people aware that they can try to learn the traits if they want. Perhaps they will need (professional) help, perhaps not. But I didn't say they were obliged to do it. If they are satisfied with their life as it is, then great ! I'm not saying they should change. I've been a HSP for almost 3 months now and because of it, I'm on the verge of losing my best friend and some other good friends of mine. I just wanna know why is it so hard for my friends to actually understand me, while most of the time when they need help or need someone to talk to, I will always be there for them. But nowadays when I need them to be the person I could talk to, they just gone .. vanished. Some of them said its because I'm too sensitive and I do realise that but that doesn't mean I can't change it. I feel sad that they won't understand what I've been through for the past couple of months ..

I think as Highly Sensitive people, we both know that we are beautiful on the inside, and that's what matters! Someday, people will be able to recognize you more and more, and they'll finally understand what it feels like to be mentally gifted. I can totally agree. A lot of people diss me for being a "cry baby" as well. But I know that someday, one of the 7 billion people in our world with understand you with all their heart and they will give you the same treatment back. I suffered for almost 3 years until on 2017, I was able to stabilized myself both physically and mentally by making myself busy with assignments in Polytech. personally i think that if said friends arent showing the exact same sympathy and support that you show them then they might not be as good of friends as you think they are. the people i am friends with are good people because they all have their fair share of problems and we all help each other out through the tough times in life. friends have to be there for each other, understand each other, and fully support all the good decisions you make as well as help to keep you away from bad decisions that they know would only hurt you. take some time to think about how your friendship has changed with these people over the years. sometimes we lose friends or just altogether cease communication with them and thats okay. we dont have to have a big group of friends that we can always talk with. we just need a few friends who know us and actually get us for who we are. i should know because ive been through a couple incidents with past friends that has ended said friendships and its just something that unfortunately happens from time to time, whether it be due to disagreements, unjust actions be they accidental or on purpose, or just losing interest in being friends in general due to multiple reasons. find out who supports you the most and stick with them in your lives. dont worry about others who cant be as supportive or sympathetic

I was met with such resistance it was mind boggling. I was labeled now . Moms crazy. She’s so sensitive.....etc. the shell I was slowly emerging from, well I went back in very quickly. Today is my 40th anniversary. 40!!!!! Yet the only recognition I got was a brief “happy anniversary “ from my spouse as he made his way to the coffee pot. It hurts so bad. I’ve made a decision. I'm sorry you hurt. I found out in my early 50s I am an HSP. First realization- I am not crazy! So much of being criticized for was my sensitive response to being overwhelmed, and no one around me growing up got that. Second, after living with this knowledge, as much as it is painful, I cut out family members who just continued to use me for their emotional crutch. I stopped enabling them. They can still be saying negative things about me, lie about me, but do I really need that? It's hard to let some family members go, there is a deep grief, of what can not be, but my life is so much calmer, letting myself be me. Pray for you to find peace.

I know things are hard but know that you have the power to change that. You have control over who you are and what you do. I know that is both terrifying and liberating as a concept as you have to take responsibility for everything you do, but it's also a gift. You have power and control. You can do anything you want to, it just takes inner strength which you do have, it's just a matter of finding it. Baby steps are still steps. Hope ya'll are doing okay and hope what I said made sense and wasn't attacking or judgemental seeming. I have been there and am there still in part, life is rough but also beautiful. Good luck (: edit: I do not in any which way mean this as a way to blame yourself for when you don't do well or don't achieve what you want. If you don't try you are guaranteed to not succeed, but in trying you will fail-that's just apart of it (aka: you will f up, you will not work as hard as you wanted to, you will have lapses and that's great because it means you are trying, which means you are going forward). Also this stuff is incredibly hard and honestly people around you will probably never understand how hard-but that doesn't matter, it's about you and you got this. I felt this comment may have been a little brutal as it's how I talk to myself (when I am most upbeat lol), hence the edit, I hope it hasn't been a source of negativity for anyone. All the best to everyone, I hope life is kind to you all.

My sensitivity always made me close to hating myself, as everyone around me always told me, "Stop overthinking. Stop being so sensitive about everything. Stop crying. You are going crazy. Your life will be better if you change." No matter how hard I tried to make myself to change, it never worked. Thinking something was wrong with me, I fell into deep depressions and locked up my emotions, which only made me angry and bitter. Now I know that it's because this is literally the way my nervous system is wired as a survival trait. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this, I just need to be aware of how this can come across to other people who dont understand HSP. I'm tired of being what other people want me to be. Years ago, I hung out a few times with a girl I met at church, who my parents introduced me to. She seemed eager at first to get to know me. After those few times we hung out she told my parents "He's a great guy, but too sensitive." Since then, I choose to keep distant from her. Especially after she asked if I wanted to hang out again, which I agreed to (may have only done it because i was kind of in a bad mood that day and she probably noticed) , but then she never called me back, which really got me upset and wanting nothing to do with her. Especially since us Christians aren't supposed to lie. Forgetting also doesn't seem to be an excuse since it was her idea. I always hated being highly sensitive. It felt like a weakness, especially as a man. It seemed more like a trait that was appropriate for a woman. Thankfully, someone recently told me that the world needs more guys like me. I had been lying to myself for 10 years that I was not HSP, and I am more on the side of logical and cold path. Well, it was such an intense war between my ego and true self, I was drowned in the dark and quite empty space with self-neglect. It was uneasy to aware, understand and accept myself as an HSP. However, I can do it now and I can see sensitivity is the divine gift in my life. I must learn how to make the best out of it.

As being an high sensitive person, its amazing to see a lot of people like me. It makes me slightly happy to see there are people out there also noticing the slightest changes in peoples tones and actually knowing what they want to achieve with their way of talking. For me there are constant vibes hanging around making people able to enter that certain "vibe". Its amazing to not feel alone and misunderstood for once. Thanks guys.

I never realised I was a HSP until I saw this video. I'm so used to having numb myself to the more negative emotions. It's not that I'm being dramatic but I love ocassionally being a bit more selfish and childish towards my bf so he takes care of me. It's tiring to just always be responsible but more often than not I like to behave "motherly" towards him too. He understands where I'm coming from and I'm so grateful for that!! It's so cute when he expresses his needy side towards me... =×=♡

I think I’m a H.S.P but also an introvert probably mentally unstable, so living life to the fullest is sometimes difficult :)

So much is so clear now. I am great at my job of counselling and helping patients diagnosed with a difficult condition, just over the phone. To me this is the easiest role and o totally enjoy this. I 'get' their mood, fears, vibe, style and adapt my help as needed. I have had countless compliments and gratitude from these people. I am always surprised by it, as it is so easy, so i don't understand why they are so grateful. After seeing this clip, it is starting to make sense. I did not realise i have this innate skill. I thought this is something you just train to do. I always also wondered why some other people don't enjoy these kind of jobs, or are don't achieve the same results. However, i also totally experience the downside of this character trait. I am indeed over sensitive to so much. A slight harsh tone, a criticism, a joke that is s bit dubious, work emails that are a bit too direct, definitely all conflicts (whether with me or between other people), funerals are truly awful for me (even if i did not know the person that well). I totally relate to bottling things up, suffering and then exploding. Mostly i get depressed however, or totally withdraw, instead of acting on it. As a child, i suffered immensely from arguments between my parents, injustice, selfishness. I left my family behind, as fast as i could, and now really realise why. It was not necessarily to be independant asap, but also to avoid the hurts. It is really hard to go through life like this. Especially not knowing you have this 'tendency'. I always thought i just have to increase my resilience to situations and people. On the one hand, it is a great skill, on the other, a real disability. I just resigned from my job, as could no longer take the criticism and nasty comments. Feel devastated, unappreciated and totally mistreated. How do we protect ourselves? How do we ensure we don't get abused? I feel so strongly about this aspect. Thanks for reading this everyone. Gather your strength, your pride and self respect, know you are a wonderful caring person. But make sure you protect yourself. I guess, every time we get upset, we could just decide to 'downgrade' the level of hurt, knowing that we react too much? Same as when people advise to 'take things with a pinch of salt' ? We just need a bucket of salt? Take good care everyone ❤

If that's what it means, my therapist was wrong and I'm certainly not a HSP.

I grew up with an extremely abusive mother and father. I was taught at a very young age that "men" aren't supposed to cry. I've been called every name in the book by my parents and siblings and yes, have been told countless times that I'm "too sensitive". I realized very early that if I didn't want to get my nose, arms, legs, face, broken and bloodied or my teeth knocked down my throat, that I had to bury that trait deep down and fight against it with all my will power. So I can tell you, as an HSP, crying isn't always a good indicator that you possess that trait. Your upbringing can have a huge affect on how your HSP trait manifests. I'm in my late 20's now and suffer from EXTREME anxiety, depression, insomnia, and a list of other disorders. Please, if any of you reading this has a child that's an HSP, please please please recognize it as a real thing and please allow it to treat your youngster like the incredibly special person they are. I honestly don't know how I'm even alive still.
