I liked this movie as a kid, I never understood why it got so much flack at the time. Even as an adult, I find it a touching and fun film. To this day, I still love the adorable reindeer.
It got flack because ti openly criticizes the materialism Christmas had become by the 1980s...Kids were all about what they were GETTING for Christmas and not what they were GIVING for Christmas...so critics hated it I believe because of this...its not a feel good movie until things get set right in the end...its a reminder of what Christmas is really about.
I remember my elementary school showing the movie the day before Christmas vacation and it was the first time I saw it. I loved it then and I still love it as an adult.
He is the best Santa! Charles Durning was also good in It Nearly Wasn’t Christmas as was Art Carney in The Night They Saved Christmas. But David was the best of the 3!
I remember seeing this movie in theaters as a kid. Mom refused to let to let me see Rocky 4 so we went to this instead. It's been at the top of my holiday seasons viewing ever since!
This movie shaped my idea of what Santa Claus was as a child. We still watch it every year. I can't help but feel that he froze to death in the snow... and the elves brought him back to life to be Santa Claus. Adds a bit of a tragic element to it... with a good end of course... but the idea that he would sacrifice himself like that would make a really good legend.
@@PowerGlove79 I remember getting those in happy meals too. They had different colored covers. I kept them for years. Interestingly enough I did not see the movie in theatres
My dad took me to see it at about the same time and age. My dad was always taking me to the movies, he sat through so many crap 80's and 90's movies. He was an awesome dad.
To me, this was always the real Santa Claus when I was a child. Though I've grown up, a part of me never lost that idealistic spark of goodness and hope that Santa represents. This also demonstrates why I ignore critics and form my OWN opinions!
It was magical! And, it made me feel Christmasy. Isn't that what a Christmas movie is supposed to do? The critics must have all gotten coal as children. Why else would they have been so down on it?
I was 10 years old when it was filmed. Our family was friends with Santa's double. He was in charge of the live reindeer scenes. We stayed in crew housing with them in London and watched them film the death scene at Pinewood Studios. I was able to be in Santa's Workshop before it was filled with toys. It will always be my favorite Christmas movie.
I would have to agree with you, because I still have both the VHS and DVD of this Movie, I like the DVD one Better, Because the Picture is Clearer, and the Sound is Better too, also This Movie is just, Amazing, Unbelievable, Wonderful, and Awesome, also that song "It's Christmas All Over the World" by Sheena Easton, is the Best Christmas Song Ever, Right Next To "All I want For Christmas is You" By Mariah Carey.
I still believed in Santa Claus at the time the movie came out. David Huddleston is a genius in the role. Judy Cornwell. Dudley Moore. John Lithgow. So well-cast. Much better movie than reviewed at the time. Not great, but entertaining with great intentions and aspirations.
The Ceremony Scene, where Santa gets the blessing of the wise old man, is one of the most wonderful & magical Scenes in any Christmas relates movie. It is is soooo incredibly well executed. So much care, such a strong sense for sensible storytelling, the outstanding performances of every single actor (from the biggest to the smallest role) and the wonderfully done sets and props..... it is all right there and it touches me every darn time i watch it. The whole Santa origin Story is being carried by the wonderful actors who play their roles with so much warmth it is incredible. :)
@@KRAFTWERK2K6 Yes it's a really great Christmas movie with great performances and really touching scenes that get's to me also in a good way because it has so much emotion.
One of my all time favorite Christmas movies. I think they made the right choices for all the characters and it was a perfect Christmas movie in my eyes and still is!!
You and I see eye to eye with this movie, Santa Claus The Movie. Our perspectives could not be more accurately parallel. I was 5 when I first saw this movie. It touched me so deeply and made an everlasting impression on how I see Christmas and Santa. The music, cinematography, actors...the whole thing is just one wonderful nostalgia. I will never forget how special this movie was and still is. Thanks for posting!
maybe to him, it is....? also, it is mine; it is the only Christmas movie I still watch to this day, since originally seeing it back on HBO.... I do not watch any other Christmas movies.... this one always had/ has such a unique charm, and really such a special ~magic~ to it.... so much genuine, light-hearted fun ~ truly a "classic" to me ☺
For me every year it comes down to five movies I have to watch. Santa Claus the movie Scrooged Elf The Santa Claus Single Santa meets Mrs Claus/meet the Santa's (TV movies) Then as a bonus the Muppet Christmas movie 😄
MINTY!!! I thought I was the only person who loved this movie 😁. It was recorded on a VHS tape given to me on my 2nd birthday. It became a tradition to watch it every year, which I did until the tape wore out. I am hoping to introduce it to my daughter next year to keep it going. Great video as always mate
I was 5 years old when this movie came out, and it still delivers that Christmas magic. Fun fact: the blu ray has German subtitles. I can only guess it's because Santa Clause has Germanic origins.
I loved this. To me, he WAS Santa Claus. I didn't realize until I was grown that he was also the mayor in Blazing Saddles "never mind that shit, here comes Mongo!!!" 🤣
When I was growing up, this was the movie I would watch right before going to bed on Christmas Eve night. It really had a special place to me and my family.
My mother was all about. Christmas and this was always her favorite Christmas movie and we watched it every year. Oddly, whenever I've mentioned it to people no one else ever seemes to have even heard of it. You hit me in the feels with this one Mint.
My all time favourite Christmas movie!! Love the soundtrack, love the story and love the comedic relief!! All the actors are well cast. Just introduced my children to it!!
I love this movie. I saw it as a kid and I’ve always liked it. It has a very genuine sweet charm! The critics have no idea what they’re talking about and it’s a fantastic Christmas film!
The opening scenes give me a tidal wave of holiday warmth, but the whole modern setting leaves me longing for what feels like would be a better story. The whole idea of Santa through the centuries and how he’d manage things during the earlier years. Still, festive enough.
My late grandfather had a taped copy of this movie that I watched over and over - so this always makes me think of him at Christmas time. So glad other people remember it - thanks for the video Minty!!!
Thank you Minty for doing this movie. It was and still is one of my favorite Christmas movies. It's sad that they don't show it on television very much anymore.
Best Christmas movie ever. There has never been a better Santa. I remember watching this movie in the big screen, and it amazed my child senses. The candy canes that make you fly gave the movie a willy wonka feeling.
Another fun fact, which I think is just REALLY awesome, is that this movie was the first time that a team of eight reindeer was put together and trained to work as a team. I've heard that's not something that reindeer tend to do naturally in the wild, and that it's almost impossible to get even three or four of them to work together. Also additional music trivial, 'Santa Claus: The Movie' has been associated with The Radio City Rockettes since the movie's release and at least through the mid-'90s. I can't exactly remember how, since I was a kid at the time and I can't find any information on Google, so I'm not sure if the movie was used in the advertising for the yearly Christmas show, if they used 'Christmas All Over the World' in the show, or if it's some combination of both. All I remember for sure is that it was a big enough cultural impact that we heard about it all the way here in Michigan (Broadway/NYC theatre news rarely made it out of New York and into national headlines during the '80s unless it became a HUGE deal that really caught people's attention - eg: 'Les Miserables' or Lloyd Webber's 'Phantom of the Opera'). Does anybody else remember The Rockettes using this movie in their Christmas show?
My sister and I watched this every day for years around Christmas. No one I know has ever heard of it. You've made me happy today, I ordered the DVD for same day delivery. Lol.
This may surprise you Minty, but there was a movie from the 1950s called, "Santa Claus: The Movie" as well. It was riffed by Rifftrax last year and had Santa Claus facing off against the Devil.
I loved this movie when I was a kid. I always wanted to watch it around Christmas. It put me in the mood for the holiday. Thank you for bringing back the memories Minty. Great job!
I saw this movie like in 88-89 had to wait till the VHS came out. I was a teen and I enjoyed the movie. I remember my father's reaction to the movie almost seeming like two movies. The first part the origin of Santa, he loved that. Although my father would leave when the modern part came on. As I have gotten older I don't like the last half as much either. It is too commercial, which ironically the movie touches on.
No, you are definitely NOT the only one... I absolutely LOVE this movie! When I was a kid, they played it on HBO all the time and I'd watch it almost daily, even when it wasn't Christmas time. Now, as an adult, it's just not Christmas until I watch it. But I honestly thought my sister and I were the only ones who loved this movie. I'm so happy to know that others appreciate it (and whatever faults it may or may not have), too!
In the United States almost 80% of the marketing for this film was through McDonalds Happy meals and McDonald’s Christmas commercials (in the early 80s McDonalds Holiday commercials were a really big deal, had high production values and played almost every half hour on every channel. Had it not been for McDonald’s most of us wouldn’t even know this film existed. Sad that this film was considered a box office flop, (hadn’t gotten to the part of your video mentioning McDonald’s until after Almost typed my entire comment lol)
@@BlueNiteiiii McDonalds actually had ornaments for this movie that came with a purchase of a $5 book of McDonald's Gift Certificates. My mom still has two (one for me and one for my sister) that go on the tree. We usually decorate the tree watching this movie as well.
Amazing video Minty, love the Thompson Twins music on this!!! SCTM was a very very fond memory for me as a kid and I, like you, have a big soft spot for it. Thanks for the nostalgic reminder, hearing Sheena Easton again gave me tingles. Keep up the good work xxxx
Love this movie! My family and I kinda had a special screening of it when it was in theaters. The local two screen theater at the time usually had showings at roughly 7pm and 9pm. We went to go to the 9pm show and were the only ones in there. We didn't think anything of it, but we kept waiting and waiting for the movie to start. Finally we went and talked to the theater employees and they said that they weren't doing a 9pm showing of that movie that night. But, since we had already paid and waited so long they showed it for us anyways! As a kid that was so cool to have it shown just for us!
I love that film it's so sweet and heartwarming and makes me cry when the reindeer starts crying over patch and I also love the actor who played Santa he is a sweetheart and the super duper loop he dose with the reighdeers is so awesome. This film is now a treasured film through out Christmas it brings Christmas Joy and love.
This film has had a Piece of My Heart since I was a kid. I Love that you mention Batman Returns too ... I think you enjoyed being a kid in the 80’s just as much as I did. I really Love your YT Videos. Thank You.
It is way too long since space exploration started for that myth to still be so prevalent. Death in vacuum is so much more horrific than sudden explosion.
Thank you Minty! This is my favorite Christmas movie as kid! I though I was the only one who loved this movie. I just bought the dvd on Black Friday! You are awesome!
OMG! Thank you so much for making this! I'm now 54 and I STILL love this movie! Notice how much Kirt Russles take on Santa in his new show looks a heck of a lot like his 80's counterpart?
This is my all time favorite Christmas movie. I saw it when it came out, I was seven and it was magical. Their version of Santa's workshop is how I imagine it to be now. So magical.
The worse christmas movie EVER made? How much crack was that critic smoking? But seriously this is in my top 5 favorite holiday movies of all time and this is the best Santa Claus ever portrayed on film!
I remember this fondly from my childhood. It really captured the wonder and magic of Christmas for a child of the 80s. It's one of my favorites alongside scrooged and A Christmas Story. A cult classic that often gets overlooked.
I love this movie! I was able to watch on theater as a kid. And it's a tradition for me watch it again each xmas too. In fact I just watch it once again tonight and I'm truly glad to find that you made a video about this movie. 👍🎬
