10 Worst Decisions Sega Ever Made

The youth of today will likely grow up with nostalgia for the eternal battle between Sony and Microsoft. For the kids of yesteryear, though-that’s our way of politely reminding you that you are old-the phrase “console war” referred mainly to Nintendo and Sega. Neither company is especially warlike today. Nintendo is charting its own territory and Sega…well, Sega still exists, which itself is a kind of victory. So why exactly is Nintendo still around to “Nintendo it up” while Sega has been barred from creating another console for the rest of eternity? Well, it honestly comes down less to Nintendo winning the war than it does Sega making so many horrific decisions that they caused themselves to lose it. Here are the 10 Worst Decisions Sega Ever Made.

Yup, well worth mentioning - the PC-Engine drive also was comparatively successful, so the failure of the Sega CD can't actually be mitigated by it being "ahead of it's time".

The problem with Sega is that it’s basically two different companies. US and Japan and they weren’t on the same page. Too many cooks
@MrZer093
@MrZer093 3 года назад
5000% correct. It was like the Japanese branch was jealous of the success of their US branch and kept undermining them. Or maybe they were competitive with them. Either way, they just kept shooting themselves in the foot to spite...themselves? It was a really weird thing at the time that even Nintendo did back then but Sega took it to new levels. Japan really felt like they knew what the US wanted more than the US did.
@VanTheDestroyerer

@@MrZer093 It made me quite sad really. The Saturn was my first ever console, and (which I know means that I've something of a bias.) in my opinion, was one of the more fun consoles around. All Sega USA did was release really really bad games and fail to get a 32bit Sonic game out with their self important STI studio that was filled with egotistical game designers. Kind of like The Travelling Willburies. A star studded line up that just don’t work well as a team and produce mediocre disposable crap.
@crazydud3380

Yes, Sega's success at its peak was mostly thanks to Sega USA, the Japan branch would frequently try to undermine and overrule them. Japan was the original Sega, so it seems that wounded pride got in the way of sound business decisions.

I think it's fair to note that Sega considered using DVD for the dreamcast but vetoed it because of the licensing fee and the increased cost of production. I think they where well aware of DVD being the future, but weren't really in the position financially to commit to it.
@CasperEgas

Exactly. They had to choose between dvd and internet compatibility. They chose the latter, as they thought it would be the future (which it was) and that it would make the console stand out more. I agree.

Unlike sega, Sony learned from all of the other manufacturers mistakes at the start, don't overproduce and sell 4 or 5 different systems of multiple generations at any one time, and respect your partners that you'll need to make software etc. I can't see Sony surviving in this space as we know it forever though, they seem to be a little less consumer friendly this generation
@jonnyOysters
@jonnyOysters 3 года назад
The bit about DVD is unfair.... Sony was a DVD patent holder. Of all the companies that Generation they had the most to gain to include a dvd player. When the dreamcast was released in 98 it would of been an absolute fortune to include a DVD player. They would of definitely would not have been able to compete with the ps2!
@fizzyfuzz5878
@fizzyfuzz5878 3 года назад
The Dreamcast and DVD just had bad timing. In Japan it released in late 1998, while the PS2 was released there first in early 2000. Adding DVD functionality in late '98 would've raised the price substantially. Also I don't think DVDs were nearly as popular in late '98.
@ArminAwesome

So true. The playstation 2 launch was so succesful because it was a reasonably priced dvd player at the time. At the japanese launch, more people bought it with the matrix dvd than actual games.
@Chelaxim
@Chelaxim 3 года назад
Sony also had a part in creating the DVD format so they themselves were really the only people who could get away with putting a DVD player in their system. Just like PlayStation 3 and the Blu-ray player. Also due to Sony owning the right to DVDs if the GameCube and Dreamcast use DVD format then Sony themselves would still take a portion of the profits due to manufacturing the disc

DVDs weren't then, but literally(1) everybody knew DVDs were the future.
@jonnyOysters
@jonnyOysters 3 года назад
Yeah I really can't call it a mistake, in that they really wouldn't of been able to include one at all specially as you said in 98. Sony shared the patent to DVD with Philips and Pioneer and therefore were able to make the PS2 relatively cheap to make it competitive and famously the cheapest DVD player at launch. There was no way Sega was going to be able to compete with that.

"Most of the good games were on handhelds." At least TripleJump doesn't pretend the good Sonic games on GBA and DS didn't exist. Several of those games were some of my favorites, plus Sonic Colors on the Wii. But far too often discourse acts like they didn't happen. There were two dark ages for Sonic. The first one from 2004 to 2009 and from 2013 to ongoing. Sonic Heroes; whether you like it or not, suffered from quality decline compared to the Adventure games and Shadow would go on to use the same engine as Heroes. Heck; if you thought that Shadow had bad controls, they were even worse in Heroes and the rail grinding was glitchy as heck. As for 2010 to 2012; while the Sonic fanbase very often bashes on the change of tone these days; not to mention that Free Riders was legit bad, Sonic Colors and Sonic Generation were genuinely fun games and the first two Sega All Star Racing games are genuine gems. However, sadly, it was a short lived silver age and things have mostly just gotten worse since Free Riders. As for Sonic Mania, I don't consider it a masterpiece. Cool visuals aside, it's a very mediocre title that lacks originality.

Also the Sega Dreamcast came out in Japan in late 1998 adding a DVD player to something in late 1998 would substantially jack up the prices. As was said before Sega was not the first to use CDs. NEC did it first. I remember getting it at the time. The Sega CD had quite a few good games so it was worth it unlike the 32X which was never really a good idea. And there's no way they could have put DVD playing in the Dreamcast. It was just too expensive at the time and the Dreamcast had to be $200. Releasing the Saturn early was a bad decision for sure. Although I love it have over 100 games for it that started it's downhill trend. The Dreamcast was a great system that had excellent games but it was too little too late. Sega didn't have the money to compete and that was that. In a way the Xbox is almost like the Dreamcast 2. It had a similar controller and Sega made a lot of games for it. Sega is just a company that had one big success,the Genesis,and didn't know what to do afterwards. It's like they succeed by accident.

I felt bad for Sonic, Sonic deserved better and especially he helped the Sega Genesis become successful. Yuji Naka should've fixed the mess Sega made with Sonic instead of making Balan Wonderworld, TBH.

Not to mention the history of awful Sonic ports. Sonic Adventure DX, Sonic Adventure 2 Battle, Sonic Genesis and now, Sonic Colors Ultimate. Like I want Colors Ultimate to succeed. We shouldn't have to fix those ports that Sega should've take responsibility into without us having to mod the game to there true potential. Feel bad for all of the people playing the inferior versions, I am glad a lot of those game gain the ability to hate. I don't care about the extras. I want quality over quantity! Does the people want Sega to get away with shoddy porting and leave it up to the fanboys to fix there games and make them what could've been true remasters and definitive editions? I don't think so!

If I were Sega, I would've: - ensured the Saturn was easy to develop for, and include Mega Drive & Mega CD backwards compatibility, maybe even ditch the system when offered by Sony to collaborate with their PlayStation - ensured there was a new 3D Sonic game ready for the Western launch of the Saturn or PlayStation - put more quality control into 1st party releases and not outsource to dodgy development firms - ensured older games continued to be easily available for years to come, either through backwards compatibility, compilations, download service or whatever else - had the Dreamcast sold in America for $250 no questions asked (I heard part of the Dreamcast's problem in America was that it retailed for $200 when $250 was the suggested price) - made a proper handheld to succeed the Game Gear, similar in specs to the Game Boy Color and Neo Geo Pocket

Sega wanted to create Sonic X-treme for the Saturn, but that instead resulted in one of the worst cases of development hell ever. As for Sonic Adventure, that actually began as a Saturn game, but they decided to move it over to the Dreamcast and Chaos was create to demonstrate what was possible with Saturn's successor.

TO BE FAIR the reason Sega didn't use DVD's and used GDRom's instead is for one singular reason. Licencing. Yeah Sony owned the rights to the DVD format and anything using DVD's had to pay Sony a licensing fee, which would mean added cost onto the Dreamcast. Sony meanwhile could throw that shit in their PS2 for no extra cost because they owned the damn format and as a result the PS2 was basically the cheapest DVD player on the market for quite a while. The more you know

It was indeed a stroke of brilliance on Sony's part.
@AstralPhnx

@@VanTheDestroyerer Sony very much had the upper hand here and it helped A LOT. Hell remember how the original Xbox was unable to play DVD's unless you bought that weird remote and dongle that plugged into the controller port? Yeah that was due to licensing reasons. Microsoft didn't want to force up the price of ALL retail systems by adding the cost of a DVD licence onto it so they effectively sold the DVD licence separately to keep the cost of the actual Xbox console down

@@AstralPhnx Indeed I do! I got the xbox as it came out, only to discover to my dismay that I was going to have to get the additional hardware! XD I was a little salty about that one.

@@VanTheDestroyerer Haha yup. Got Sony to blame for that. I had a PS2 during my younger years (PS3 was already out but the PS2 released here in New Zealand at the current day equivalent cost of 1000 US Dollars so uhhhh yeah) so I just thought all systems could play DVD's. Although I spent most of my youth with a PS1 because again, those prices lmao. The weirdness of being a Kiwi born at the tail end of the 90's

You know its so nice how in the last few weeks people have come together to celebrate Sonic on his 30th anniversary and remind us all why we love the franchise. Sure there's some negativity and unnecessary arguing here and there but these last few weeks have actually shown unity and love amongst fans. Now I love you guys but I must respectfully disagree on your point about Sonic. At best there are only really 3, maybe even 4, really bad Sonic games, those being Shadow, Sonic 06 and Sonic Boom Rise of Lyric. Sure Sonic Forces disappointed but its hardly a BAD game, the same can be said for many of the games in the series. To call it one of the worst franchises of all time is in my opinion a gross exaggeration especially when, as I've just mentioned, the last few weeks have shown that there's actually so much more good than bad and its just Internet culture (and people like Game Grumps) pushing this agenda that Sonic is bad. Sorry for the long rant but I just wanted to get my point out there. Sonic really isn't that bad.

To be fair, just like Nicolas Cage’s erroneous example of Thomas Edison inventing the lightbulb in the first National Treasure movie, they learned ten ways not to be successful, but it would seem they only needed one way to make success come knocking. For those unaware of what I’m alluding to, check out Sega’s method of dealing with fan projects versus Nintendo’s and you too will be amazed at how almost stupidly obvious the solution to their problem turned out to be.

I have one bad decision they made just recently. They made a techno remix of Korobeiniki in Puyo Puyo Tetris 2. It just doesn't fit Tetris and it just sounds worse than the first PPT's remix. The first game's one was really good and more accurate to the original rearrangement. The second game's garbage track doesn't fit to the Red Square and Kremlin Wall background and it is literally just an empty shell of the first game's remix... Whatever I'll just use the fusion theme...
