In this short series I take a look at Festool’s Domino after 10 or so years of use, and discover that not only is it essentially a free tool, it’s also half the price of one of its competitors. Enjoy!

Great video as usual Peter. Domino hit the USA in '06 and it changed my business, no more rabbets, dados, groves or old school M&T for me in my carcass/furniture builds, assembly time is super fast. No more dovetail drawers either, assemble the drawer sides, run through dominos from side of drawer into front of drawer, super strong. I love the Seneca Domiplates on both the 500 & 700 machines. I also removed the pins on the 500 fence, pencils marks for me. To make it even more efficient, one board gets all mortises small width setting, adjoining board gets the second width setting on all mortises, super easy assembly. Seneca also makes a Imperial Thickness gauge if needed. I use CMT bits as well...

Great video. I found when I bought my Domino, years ago, I needed to make several test pieces of various types of connections like joining a panel in the center verse a corner edge. When I messed up it was always because I got confused on the "reference" surface. To this day when laying out parts I mark an "R" on each piece just to get my mind right on the reference. My work is only a hobby, I think if I was doing this daily I could skip the "R". Once again thanks for the good videos.

Hi Peter. Nice video. I prefer the domino not to be in the center as it helps avoid wrong side out during assembly. If it is 1mm off center, this enables a quick visual check of proper assembly during hectic glue-ups. Steve

For the type of work you do, that tool is indispensable. For the few times I need it, I can use my router table to make the slots and biscuits instead of dominos. I liked the "previously enjoyed" terminology. So much nicer than "used"!

I've had the domino since it was first introduced to UK at the 'tools' exhibition where a nice introductory discount was on offer :-). OK its only been for hobby use, but in all this time I did not realise that the width dial should only be turned with the motor on. I just downloaded a manual and its confirmed!!. I doubt if I ever bothered to RTFM in the past. Fortunately no damage to the domino appears to have resulted. I almost did not watch your latest video as I thought it would all be rather old hat to me. But once again your tips and demos prove to be of great value. Looking forward to part 2 to see what else I may have cocked up :-).

Incidentally I don’t know if you’ve seen it and I stupidly didn’t mention it in the video, but the ‘supplemental manual’ (link in the description) by Rick Christopherson is excellent - so much clearer than the Festool original. 👍👍

Thanks Pete. I've had mine for four years and it has made my practice of M&T just about extinct. I also make custom Dominoes to fit the Medium and Large hole settings, where one standard is not quite big enough and maybe two doms wont fit. I've noticed your Domie plate and have been looking for one (Australia). I think I could make good use of one. Love the tip about the 1mm packer.

Great video as always Peter. I was just looking up when I got mine as it needs some attention due to wear on the plunge rod thingies. Got mine in 2009 and it was my first Festool purchase when I started up on my own. Like you, together with the TS55 it's been used on every job and I think they are revolutionary. I also bought the XL700 when that came out and sold my morticer.

Thank you Peter. This intro is well done, but as a new owner of a domino, I hope to gain from your insights as a 10 year user. When do you change domino sizes and why? Do dominos in MDF require screws too? Domino drawers worth making or a just a justification to use the tool in an ad? Basically I'm asking for the 10 year insights one can't get from a manual or other domino videos. Thanks for all you do. You do it well.
@10MinuteWorkshop
@10MinuteWorkshop 5 лет назад
Thanks John. This short series is really just an introduction or (re-introduction) to the machine and it’s capabilities, rather than its actual use. Also, for much of what you ask, many answers would start “it depends...” lol, and with so many variables the chances of covering enough at sufficient detail within a ~10minute video gets pretty slim. Depending on the relative success of theses videos (Part 2 out tomorrow) I do plan a ‘best practice’ type of video, but not immediately. To answer your questions as best I can, you change Domino sizes depending on the thickness of the material and the strength is the joint required. Dominos in MDF don’t always require screws, but if not visible then screws are a very quick -and cheap - way to ‘clamp’ a joint while the glue dries. And solo-drawers are absolutely worthwhile - they look great and are so easy to do! Hope that helps, P

I think being a newbie I rushed in and bought the wrong thing and bought a biscuit joiner to give my A2 photograph frames' mitre joints strength. I've since been told, rightly are wrongly, that the biscuit joiner is only for when you are attaching two pieces of wood perpendicular to each other and I should have bought a Domino. A very interesting video, thank you.

Hello Peter, great video as usual. I wondered if you had a suggestion for a DIYer / lower cost jointing method? A jig that maybe fits in the £20-40 cost bracket? Obviously less accurate and slower but much more accessible for someone making a few cabinets, book shelf etc?

gday Peter, nice review I got the XL Domino soon after its release and it revolutionised my business(small hardwood folding chairs), i also went to Seneca but for the bit extension to allow the use of smaller cutters since then it has cut over 100000 mortises probably closer to 200000 maybe more (don’t really want to know) without missing a beat. In fact i’m about to head into my factory and cut a thousand or so today. With the use of jigs I can lock the Domino in it’s plunged mode and offer up the pieces of timber very quickly easily and accurately. cheers from the poor cricket nation of Oz

Hi Peter, Just wondering if you have ever considered painting full boards before you cut them down, rather than leaving the 'domino glue strip' unpainted each time? I'm assuming it makes a difference to the strength of the joint, but just thought I'd ask! Would save so much work painting if you could do this! Also, just watched your latest quarterly review and want to say thanks for the great videos, and try not to worry about the moaners too much! Remember, most people happily enjoying your videos don't comment :-) Your ever growing subscriber list proves that! Cheers, Matt
@10MinuteWorkshop
@10MinuteWorkshop 5 лет назад
Thanks Matt. Short answer - no; most of the cutting is done by my timber yard, so it's not a practical option, though I've often wondered why MDF isn't available pre-primed, as it almost always ends up painted. Then again, I know plenty of painters who are fussy about their primers, so maybe it's a non-starter. Even without the timber yard doing most of the cutting, though, you'd have to factor in time taken to prime, not to mention the physical space required to paint, dry, store, etc... 👍👍
@mattkindon2917
@mattkindon2917 5 лет назад
@@10MinuteWorkshopI see what you mean. I find it really fiddly trying to keep glue lines clean with bookcases/carcasses etc on the faces so thought you might find this frustrating too... probably sounds lazy of me but if the paint doesn't actually weaken the joint (to a notable difference) I just wonder if it's worth leaving it unpainted! Thanks. Matt

Thanks for sharing this Peter but as a hobby woodworker I have to ask why is a domino joiner better than a biscuit joiner as it seems to do pretty much the same thing? I can see that the dominos provide a bigger gluing surface but isn't that compromised by the thinner material surrounding the slot, especially in 18mm stock? Maybe I should wait for Part2? Best Regards.
@10MinuteWorkshop
@10MinuteWorkshop 5 лет назад
Thanks Ken. I think we had all the biscuits vs Dominos arguments about 12 years ago, but in short; biscuits are thin (you can snap them with your fingers) and rely on the adhesive to make them swell to make a right fit. They’re fine for alignment, but don’t really form a structural joint. Dominos / loose tenons are much stronger, and because of the wide range of sizes (from 4x20mm to 10x50mm) they’re suitable for all kinds of smaller joinery tasks (eg rails) where the physical size of a biscuit makes them unsuitable. Tough call. But - and this is hearsay, haven’t used one personally - there’s a learning curve to it, and it’s much happier in MFC than in MDF, for some reason. Hope to get my hands on one before too long. 👍👍

Both. I bought mine on the back of one job - to make a (small) pair of French doors for a conservatory. I wouldn’t have attempted that without the Domino, though with the benefit of hindsight I probably could have used through dowels just as easily. Dear Peter, did you know that the pins on the early Dominos (mine has 2006 on it - it has pins) had to be swapped for those peddles - or how did you call them - because Mafell had a patent on those pins - used for the DD 40 and DDF40? I bought a Domino router after having worked years with a Lamello classic. Now I am combining those actually - for economical reasons actually. Got loads of Biscuits in boxes... The physical strength of the Dominos compared to the strength of the Lamello biscuits has been, and is, an important parameter for me when choosing for the one or the other. Anyway - very interesting again to hear what you had to say (2 years ago).

Yes - Festool have always denied it was anything to do with patents, but it’s pretty clear when you see them together! And yes, mine is also an early one with pins, not paddles. 👍👍
@WinoSnip
@WinoSnip 3 года назад
That to me is a strange thing - when communicating directly with Festool or Mafell, I quite often sense that not all is being told. They will have good reasons for it, but it somehow, for me, does not easily line up with “we take our customers serious”. I rather hear a “sorry, we decided not to comment on that topic” than some made up explanation where in between the line you clearly read that it’s a sales pitch and not an open communication with a loyal yearlong customer with loads of experiences with their tools. Anyway, I had some very nice chats as well with Festool and Mafell and they really helped me out in a fantastic way with some problems. Maybe they keep a history of client contacts - that might explain a bit of it.

Peter, i see you are a big Festool fan. In Australia the tracksaw is circa 560 GB vs a UK price of say 420 GB. There drills and drivers are also very expensive . Any idea why the huge price differential. In Australia they are pretty much priced out of the market.
@10MinuteWorkshop
@10MinuteWorkshop 5 лет назад
No idea at all I’m afraid. We could speculate about high import duties (are other brands priced significantly higher in Oz than elsewhere?) or the size of the market (fewer potential buyers over a larger area means higher prices) or it could just be Festool charging what they think the market will bear. 🤷‍♂️ Also, by all means call me a ‘fan’ but I bought the tracksaw as it was the only game in town at the time, and then the extractor because it made perfect sense; I’ve continued to pay the premium for their tools as there’s a solid business case to be made for both the systematic approach they take, and the high residual values. I still own the vast majority of the Festool tools I’ve ever bought - including the original saw and extractor - and were I to sell them, I would probably recoup most of their original purchase price, even after over a decade of daily professional use. Not many tools you can say that about. 👍👍

@10MinuteWorkshop 5 лет назад
If I've understood properly, then no; domino mortices are always perpendicular to the face of the machine. You can alter the height and the angle of the fence, to put dominos into the flat face of a bevel or mitre, for example, but you can't skew the angle of the mortice in relation to the face, no.
@MrUmy786
@MrUmy786 5 лет назад
Peter Millard Somehow I knew you'd understand what I was getting at! Ah rats, that's a shame! I have an 45° workpiece with which I want to put some dominos but I wanted the angle of the dominos straight as opposed to referencing off of the 45° cut. Back to the drawing board I guess! Would it be possible to remove the fence and create almost a 'fake fence' for the domino to reference off of to create the angle?
@10MinuteWorkshop
@10MinuteWorkshop 5 лет назад
Only way to do that would be to make the domino mortices, then make the bevel cut, unless you're very handy with engineering - the whole fence assembly comes away from the body of the machine for bit changes etc... so I guess it'd be possible to make something that would fit, but well beyond my level of tinkering. 👍

@@10MinuteWorkshop DDF40 is slightly more expensive but from what I understand you can use all the sizes of the bits in one machine VS Festool which has 2 machines depending on the size of domino you want to use. So you're saving there. Lamello looks ok but the joints are weak. Look for reviews and you will see what I mean. What would be useful to you is that you can dissasemble the joints but you could do the same with the specialist dowels on the Mafell. What you would miss on both Lamello and Mafell is the power cord attachment system though. Just my 2 pence
@10MinuteWorkshop
@10MinuteWorkshop 5 лет назад
No, the Mafell has several versions - the new one (DDF40) only has a 40mm plunge and max of 12mm bits. The 40mm plunge is a headache because most useful KD fittings (eg hafele) are 60mm long, so if you use them in 18mm board you need 15mm/45mm plunge. But as max plunge is 40mm, you need to finish it off with a drill. 🤷‍♂️ There’s more, but long story short, the Mafell looks great on paper, but hits a few bumps along the road, in use; a pal of mine sold his Domino to buy the Doweller as it ticked all of boxes, but he’s since returned it and bought a new Domino...

Very interesting video. And I don't even have a Festool Domino machine and I'll probably never (say never) have one.Thanks for sharing. I subscribed about one year ago to your channel because I was looking for a RU-vid video about a problem with my band saw. It turned out you had the same one (that time). I subscribed and learned so many things since then. You are a great teacher. I know that you are mostly working with MDF, which is not the most healthy material in the wood working world, it seems. Last week I ran into this video, made by an Australian RU-vidr which was very interesting. (how to make a MFT) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Xi9raT8gyEE.html In one of the comments he was asked about the "helmet" he wore and as he reply he explained how dangerous MDF is, when you saw, drill or router it. About the saw dust I knew but the formaldehyde in the glue was a surprise for me. I have read some reports about it, two years ago. One was in German, very extensive and very technical. The other was in English, an excerpt of the German original. Less extensive but still very technical. Maybe you can, one day, explain in normal words, how dangerous (or not so) is working with MDF and what to do minimize the risk of health damage. If you did such a video already in the past, or you know another video made by somebody else, maybe you can put a link.
@10MinuteWorkshop
@10MinuteWorkshop 5 лет назад
Thanks Hans! I have a ‘what’s the fuss about MDF’ video planned, yes. IMO the link between formaldehyde and MDF has been massively overstated - here’s a link to the UK Health & Safety advisory on MDF:- bit.ly/MDF_FAQ. In short, if you’re buying branded boards made in the EU it will be a ‘low emission’ board. But - and here’s the money quote:- “The most common binder for boards intended for dry environments is urea-formaldehyde. Other binders may be used depending on the grade of board and its intended end-use. For example, melamine urea-formaldehyde, phenolic resins and polymeric diphenylmethane diisocyanate (PMDI) are generally used in boards that require an improved moisture resistance. PMDI binder is not formaldehyde-based and consequently does not emit any formaldehyde.” Formaldehyde is used as the binding agent in boards intended for dry environments. Moisture resistant boards use a different binder (PMDI) so are formaldehyde free. 👍👍

Well hold on peter, since about 14 years ago formaldehyde has been proven carcinogenic and the exposure level Typically needs to be below 1.5 ppm (varies somewhat from country to country). It has a probability of causing cancer in the nose. It seems to me that a lot of furniture (particle board and mdf) from the past was made with urea.formaldehyde. A very good reason to continuously ventilate your home! Formaldehyde exposure in the home to me is a not well-known issue. Also, you mentioned MDI: MDI/isocyanate seems on the suspect list on the European Union today as well. It is also used in foams and materials used in that mattress you sleep on every night :-) and in isolation materials... If you know a good industrial hygienist he/she could help you in prepping the video. It is one of my areas of expertise in my professional life. But hey, like you I am a very busy man :-). Yet another Festool plug with no reference whatsoever to any alternatives for poor people. You didn’t mention biscuit jointers once and whilst it could be argued that they aren’t as strong as a domino they work on a similar principal not only providing strength through the biscuit but also increasing the surface area of the glue spread which in turn is stronger than the wood in most cases.
