While in Colorado this summer, I blew my front differential spider gears on an obstacle near the infamous 'wall.' In order to get off the trail, I had to convert to 2WD so that I could safely maneuver out of Poughkeepsie Gulch.
On the trail, I elected to remove the flanges and use Ben3Dbuild's dust covers for my exit. While this method works well enough, it is not a perfect method on account of the hub only being protected from the front. Debris can still enter the back of the hub since the axles are not being held in place, pulled to the side, by the c-clips (no flange = no c-clip).
I cut two CV axles in half and used the inboard and outboard sides to seal the diff and the back of the hub - a true 2WD conversion (short of implementing the part-time kit from Cruiser Outfitters).
