Anytime. Thank you. Anything to avoid $196 an hour at the dealership is worth it. With confidence and proper tools, the bikes are definitely something that can be maintained at home.

You need to use the GS911 to activate the ABS pump when you flush the brakes.

To fill the shaft drive reservoir with oil I use a typical small oil can with the thumb pump. It's such a small amount of oil, it takes no time and you have great control over how much oil is going in and the level when it is reached.

@danman5857 Thank you. An oil can with a thumb pump is the correct tool to use. If it get another shaft drive BMW I will definitely buy one. The turkey injector works really well, too. I cut the end off slightly and it allowed the oil to flow out of the end. It worked really well. The hard part is lining up the hole inside on the axel with the fill top to get the oil to slowly leak in. You're right about a small amount of oil. It is only 5 oz. Just go slow when adding new fluid and it will drain in properly. Too fast and it will spill out, like you can tell in the video by the mess on my floor mat.

I don’t know why the factory doesn’t put these out. It isn’t like the world doesn’t have the internet. Every service should be online now.

Bikes are much more straightforward than cars. You can see or access almost everything without taking the whole thing apart. Thank you.

10,000km are 6,213 miles. Just the conversion being a metric bike. Don't forget to check the spokes. It's an often neglected maintenance position on spoked wheels that can cause severe injuries. If you need the BMW TIS shop manual, I can send you a copy.

Good call. Thank you for the informative comment. I check the spoke tightness when changing tires. When I dismount the old tire, I do a full inspection and cleaning of the wheel. I burn through tires way faster than the 10,000-mile service. I'd love a manual. Thank you, Mike

@@motorradmikegrossheim Good to know you keep up on the maintenance plan. The Advantec oil is excellent, has high amounts of anti wear and detergent additives. Engines with high mileage still look spotless with no discolouration on the inside. Also check out their Advantec Protect fuel additive, unfortunately it's the only BMW approved fuel additive, but it contains tons of PLA that cleans off carbon deposits like nothing else. Did you already receive the updated maintenance plan from July 2023? They added removing the shaft drive, checking it and lubing the spines to the list every 20,000km and replacement of the shaft every 60,000km, but I will overhaul the old one with new u-joints with zerk fittings at a local shop. The shop manual is a PDF file. If you are OK with it, I e-mail you the link of the cloud storage to the address on your RU-vid page. It's 150MB, too large to send it directly via e-mail.

Thank you for posting such an informative video - very much appreciated! Have your exact same bike (including the manual suspension), all your steps seem clear however I was wondering what your thoughts were on using the 75W-90 final drive oil instead the 70W-80 the owner manual specifies?

Great question. Thank you. "SAE J306, which is the standard for gear lubricants, had been revised in February 2019, and it tightened some of the broad windows of kinematic viscosity. That is why BMW adopted the new limits." All of the dealers still carry and use 75 w-90. 70w-80 is more expensive and hard to get. I picked up my kit from the dealer, and that is what they gave me. Unless you live and ride in cold weather all the time or have trouble shifting into 2nd cold, it shouldn't be a problem.

Have not heard about the J306 spec change - that makes sense. Talked to my dealer (Grand Rapids, MI) yesterday - and just as you stated, they also use the 75W-90 when servicing these bikes. Thanks for your quick response!

Why skip the valve clearance check -- or do you have that performed elsewhere? Using the Motoscan app with a USB-to-ODB2 adapter is cheaper than a GS911. I have a GS911 anyway, because it does more and explains what it does better.
@motorradmikegrossheim
@motorradmikegrossheim 8 месяцев назад
The valve clearance was done by Missoula BMW in order to keep the factory warranty in order. I agree about the USB GS 911 for the price and the options. Thank you, Mike

@@motorradmikegrossheim Read up on the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. It was passed by Congress in 1975, and deals specifically with what a purchaser of a product can do in regards to voiding a warranty or not. Harley-Davidson recently was busted a year ago for this and forced to honor warranties in cases of independent/self repair or use of 3rd party parts. None of the maintenance you perform or have performed at your direction outside of a BMW dealer will void your warranty unless BMW can prove in court that what you did directly contributed to whatever issue later arises and BMW refuses to cover. BMW used to sell service DVDs of all its bikes, including the RS. In early spring of last year, they ordered a stop sale of the DVDs and ordered all unsold inventory be shipped back to them. A dealer will make far more off of servicing the bike than selling it.

BMW also got into "Industrial Banking." Only allowed in Utah. Congress cut off new companies starting a new industrial bank a few years ago. BMW probably makes more money off of lending now than they do, making cars and bikes combined.
