Technically one doesn't need to buy a local Philippines SIM phone card. There are various international phone plans out there like GoogleFi that work around the world. I use GoogleFi, and it works pretty well I can make calls, text, go online even with a USA phone number. I only pay for data used. Local SIM card likely cheaper though. In addition, having a phone with USA number also allows me to use banking apps with no issue at all so don't need to use VPN. Or if there is a problem I can call up their help center with my local number and resolve any issue. Just a bonus 🙂 Overall though if living there long term I would keep my GoogleFi phone as a key back up and buy a cheap phone at Phils mall and get local SIM card to use on day to day basis. I had not heard of Angkas though that I would add. Doesn't Grab have an option for motorcycle taxi though? It certainly does in Thailand (Bolt too), but I'm not sure about Philippines Not sure I would say a music detection app is vital hahaha.
