12 Days of Xmas #4: Waco: The Rules of Engagement 

Everytime I interacted with agents of ATF in the course of my service I got the distinct feeling they had imbibed, ingested, and smeared way too much Hiptang.

Talk about an incredible example of screwing the pooch. There were a hundred easier ways the whole situation with the Branch Davidians could have gone down, and the ATF chose the dumbest and most destructive to see if they could use all their new equipment

This will forever be a Christmas movie for me now.

Fun anecdote; during the opening firefight, the FBI/ATF ran out of bullets, then threw up their hands to call a truce. The Branch Davidians let them walk away unharmed, since they couldn't fight back and the Davidians thought that it would be cowardly to shoot them. No mistake, I know David Koresh was an evil man. But, even so, let that sink in for a second. They let their soon-to-be-killers walk, because they believed it was dishonorable to harm people who are defenseless, even if they started it. Shame the Federal fucking government begged to differ.

Wendigoon has a great video about Waco. And the weapons stockpiling was a bogus claim.

I remember an ATF agent saying at the hearings that the idea of knocking on the door to serve a warrant is over. They're coming in, one way or another. Then a person on the compound saying that, if they had come to the door, with a warrant, they would have complied and let the agents look around. I think the ATF wanted to see what they could get away with, and loaded up for a full scale assault. Then got their ass handed to them, but in no way, shape or form, would they be allowed tback down. Also, why were members of DELTA FORCE used in the final assault of the compound? And the rear tank had 2 members shooting mp5's rounds at the back of the compound. The government really fucked this one up, then tried desperately to cover it up.

The Waco raid lead directly to the Oklahoma City bombing. I had a neighbor that was in the building when that truck bomb blew. If he were five feet forward of where he was, he wouldn't be alive today.

The thing that strikes me the hardest, and scares me the most after watching this documentary, is that you have on the one side Koresh, who believed that he was right, had God on his side and refused to back down, and on the other you have the Federal Authorities who believed that they were right, had the Government on their side and also refused to back down. The tragedy was that between them were Koresh's followers, men, women and children, who had become trapped in a situation over which they had little or no real control.

Whew, it's a good thing those 3 letter agencies learned their lessons from this incident!

'Stockpiling' weapons is not illegal. Owning a lot of guns is legal, and expected for people who sell guns at gun shows.

The doc is a masterpiece.

First weapon stockpiling isn't a crime. Second they were licensed federal firearms dealer. they could legally buy bulk firearms and sell them. The ATF had no reason to do anything they did.

Aish! And they wondered why little Timmy McVeigh went all boom-boom in OK a few years later?

Adaptation is probably one of my favorite films, that and Chinatown.

First time I ever heard of Waco was when Bill Hicks talked about it on his 1997 posthumous CD Rant In E-Minor. I remember trying to look up whatever I could find on it on the wild west that was internet at the time (no wikipedia for instance).

FBI takes a lot of flak for overtly mishandling a situation handed to them in a fubar state by the ATF who show up, don't present their warrant, don't identify themselves and open fire on dogs that were penned up. People inside started shooting back. Typical ATF incompetence. If they had been competent they'd have picked people up while they were away from the compound picking up supplies or whatever, then called the compound pretending to be a hospital and grabbing a few more. Whittle them down. Certainly wouldn't have taken any longer than the 19 months of surveillance.

It's a merry old time, this one. I also actually like "Red State" by Silent Bob on a similar kick.

That is the failure of the mechanized police force. In an urban combat situation, the military is perfect to engage the enemy whereas civilians in urban areas are just collateral damage, a meat grinder product of war. On other hand in hostage engagements where a lot of journalists and sometimes 100 cameras with helicopter bird views, for example, in Beslan, Waco, terrorist hostage or bank robbery situations where civilians are not collateral damage military mechanized police SWAT team always ends in failure.

If you really want to understand the story watch Scott Horton's work on it.
