It's that time of year- The 12 Days of Xmas 2022. This season I'm doing the same as ever- looking at movies or TV shows that are unique, or have interesting ideas, or are implemented well, or are just generally worth watching. Today is "John from Cincinnati," a 2007 series from David Milch and Kem Nunn.

I love shows that only got 1 season. It's either because they were far too good or far too bad.

John from Cincinnati is a fantastic show that basically everyone I know wrote off after the first episode. Which is a shame because the deeper and deeper the season goes, the more rewarding and even exhilarating the material became.

The way you described that reminds me of what many have said about Breaking Bad. I told them, watch past the pilot, it will not disappoint. I did agree with them though, that a pilot should grab a person by the balls, or tickle the lips... LOL 😅😝

Same thing happened with Patriot on Amazon prime. No one made it past episode one, but just like John from Cincinnati, it gets deeper and deeper as you go along. It's a show made by watchmakers❤️

That's because it was slotted to take over The Sopranos Sunday night slot (when Sunday night slots mattered). With weird outrage over The Sopranos ending still going, and this being nothing like The Sopranos, everyone just moved on. Had this hit in the streaming era, it would be much more popular.

I am so glad someone I respect liked this show as much as I did. (Or almost a much as I did... Milch is our greatest living television writer.) I bought it on DVD and treasure it, occasionally turn someone on to it. This might be obvious to others, but... "John From Cincinnati." "JFC." "Jesus F*cking Christ." Not a coincidence! Aside: Milch's Luck was also a great, great show that died too soon for a variety of reasons.

my friends and I in college were all Milch fans after watching Deadwood and so we were very excited for JFC. However, even with the non zero amount of drug usage in the house, we still failed to understand this show. The opaqueness of the show as you put it so succinctly still didn't cover up the fact it's a hodge podge of metaphysical gubbly gook intertwined with the sillies and some buried family trauma. Maybe now that I'm older I can appreciate the aimless charm of the show, but it'll always retain that stigma of original viewing.
@bookaufman9643
@bookaufman9643 Год назад
I will always think of that show as the show that got Deadwood canceled. HBO could not handle the very large cast for both shows and milch couldn't write for both and for some reason chose John from Cincinnati over Deadwood which is a top 10 TV show of all time. John from Cincinnati wasn't horrible but I think it was pretty good at best. Dad wood was epic. Not a good decision by David milch in my opinion.

@@edward2448 I thought it was a brilliant way to tell the story of the Second Coming. For the purposes of the narrative, lets assume Jesus/G-d were real. Wouldn't old JC come back to a very unlikely and damaged place, full of unbelieving and damaged people? It's not as though he'd turn up at the Vatican, being the hippy he seems to have been. And wouldn't he communicate in ways that they might understand? I think so.

I watched the show as it aired. I was very excited, because I felt like this was the 1st time I was going to get to watch a new hit show from the beginning, but none of it made any sense. I later read an interview where the showrunner said that he didn't come up with the script by thinking about it, but by praying. I think that explains why it was nonsense. "Mother of God, Cass-Kai" makes sense the way anything makes sense if you indulge endless association and interpretation, but you can say that about anything, including cutting to silent blackness at the end of your series. (Let me clarify: it isn't that none of it made sense, it's that it made sense only in that indulgent way that lets you decide that A Day in the Life is really about the JFK assassination. Anything can mean anything if you want it to.)

I think it just feels weird for many people to consider Christmas the start point rather than the endpoint, because all the celebration tends to happen the 24th/25th, and the time people usually have free from work or school overlaps with Christmas but usually not early January. Sort of for pragmatic reasons I think (basically socio-economic reasons) the 12 days became a lead up to Christmas instead, in popular culture in the west at least
