12 Days of Xmas #9: John From Cincinnati 

I love shows that only got 1 season. It's either because they were far too good or far too bad.

I loved this weird show. Found it genuinely interesting.

It's got a hip tang

John from Cincinnati is a fantastic show that basically everyone I know wrote off after the first episode. Which is a shame because the deeper and deeper the season goes, the more rewarding and even exhilarating the material became.

Love how these Hiptang ads have a mini film or TV series review tacked onto the end. I think the model from the ads really has a future in doing reviews... If he doesn't end up consuming too much product...

Seems like the Dougie Jones arc with a SHIT TON OF good character actors

Almost certainly the most lost and forgotten gem of any T.V. show ever. It's pretty much too subtle for it's own good.

I saw a promo for this show when I was a young child and for some reason it stuck with me. I Google this show every couple years to make sure I didn't dream it. Still haven't watched it.

I got a special Hip Tang in my underwear after I made a Hiptang Hotpot for the family. It went down well with my cat Frank, he loved it. Edit: No, Frank just exploded.

I'll check this out but goddamn man I could only get through 15 minutes of Queen of Versailles before contemplating arson.

I am so glad someone I respect liked this show as much as I did. (Or almost a much as I did... Milch is our greatest living television writer.) I bought it on DVD and treasure it, occasionally turn someone on to it. This might be obvious to others, but... "John From Cincinnati." "JFC." "Jesus F*cking Christ." Not a coincidence! Aside: Milch's Luck was also a great, great show that died too soon for a variety of reasons.

I remember kinda liking _John From Cincinnati_ and being into its weirdness. But I resent it because Milch should have finished _Deadwood_ first instead of leaving everything hanging.

my friends and I in college were all Milch fans after watching Deadwood and so we were very excited for JFC. However, even with the non zero amount of drug usage in the house, we still failed to understand this show. The opaqueness of the show as you put it so succinctly still didn't cover up the fact it's a hodge podge of metaphysical gubbly gook intertwined with the sillies and some buried family trauma. Maybe now that I'm older I can appreciate the aimless charm of the show, but it'll always retain that stigma of original viewing.

I will always think of that show as the show that got Deadwood canceled. HBO could not handle the very large cast for both shows and milch couldn't write for both and for some reason chose John from Cincinnati over Deadwood which is a top 10 TV show of all time. John from Cincinnati wasn't horrible but I think it was pretty good at best. Dad wood was epic. Not a good decision by David milch in my opinion.

This show is like taking drugs without taking drugs. It can get you high without drugs. It's not good. It's bad. It's not bad, it's good. That last episode makes no sense whatsoever.

This show was/is brilliant. Some day I hope to understand it. Was it supposed to be the second coming of Christ.? Very weird but entertaining.

I watched the show as it aired. I was very excited, because I felt like this was the 1st time I was going to get to watch a new hit show from the beginning, but none of it made any sense. I later read an interview where the showrunner said that he didn't come up with the script by thinking about it, but by praying. I think that explains why it was nonsense. "Mother of God, Cass-Kai" makes sense the way anything makes sense if you indulge endless association and interpretation, but you can say that about anything, including cutting to silent blackness at the end of your series. (Let me clarify: it isn't that none of it made sense, it's that it made sense only in that indulgent way that lets you decide that A Day in the Life is really about the JFK assassination. Anything can mean anything if you want it to.)

It was a great show, wonder if you've seen Lodge 49 simaly vibe but more linear storytelling, alchemy and lots about late stage capitalism

Even though this only had one season, it seems like Breaking Bad. Breaking Bad didn't grip a lot of people by the balls in the pilot, so they cast it aside. BIG mistake... 😯🙃

Ugh, this was a horrible show. It went nowhere and it took forever for it to imply it was even going anywhere.
