You are amazing to even pursue a repair as bad as the board is! I trust you called the customer and told him it was going to be a very costly repair! You are the best. I wish I could send you any broken radio I have in the future. I trust you totally! You are the most knowledgeable engineer I have had the pleasure watching. Truly a GENIUS at work. 👍
I am watching all of your repair video even if they are very old because you are a real genius! This one is like letting somebody out of intensive care room. For me this radio would be already scrap! Bravo!
Awesome, your patience and workmanship are to be admired. When I saw the PCB I was sure it was not a feasible repair, but then I remembered who was doing the repair work. Thanks for sharing this and prior videos. '73 OM.
well done but what a mess you had to sort out, when people have faulty radio they should bring it to someone like you peter who knows what they are doing you had much repair to get the radio working again but you stuck with it and I do admire you for not giving up many another repair would have given it back to the owner and told them there was to much mess to fix It is a joy to see step by step expert at work and so much learning Peter and thank you for another video :)
Brave man taking that one on, anything is fixable with time, effort and cost…but I would of refused to even look at it after seeing the reg placed on top of the other, right away I thought burned traces, then the other work was bodged, yeah a brave man Peter, well done, you fixed a pig and made it a king.
You really are a great tech that goes the extra mile for your customers , I would consider this repair somewhat of a nightmare and you handled it like a boss , I find your video's inspiring and enjoy watching all of them, I look forward to more in the coming year , please keep up the great work........ yourself and Mr carlsons lab are my favorite tech's ....... both very inspiring....... have a very happy and productive new year ....... 73
It seemed like the last "golden screwdriver guy", destroyed the whole tranceiver. But, you've got it repaired at last. Well done!! I've got the same tranceiver and I wanted to see this repair. Greetings, Fred from Nederland.
Peter, you are honestly a saint. Most people would have handed that radio back to the owner and said "No Thanks" or simply told them they needed to order a new board. You stuck with it and turned a sows ear into a silk purse of a repair. That really was some amazing work and shows what you will go through to fix something before giving up. If I might ask, what would a repair like this cost?? It must be less than a new board but I am wondering how much less. Sad to see such a great radio damaged to that extent but its great to see that you were able to bring it back to life. I would love to have one of these. Thanks again for the wonderful video! 73 de N0BPS
Thank you Brain! I would not call me a saint just a guy who loves what he is doing! The manufacturer would approximate charge 600€ for a new board. Thanks again for your kind feed-back 73
Hello Peter! Love to watch your repair videos! That one had a cluster of issues, but the Petermeister came through. I always look forward to your videos. Thanks for posting and hope you have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! 73...Dan w4mnc
Wow, that was quite impressive... and a very nice job. You obviously know your craft, and also take it professionally, which are two hard to find qualities, nowadays.
Peter, you had your work cut out for you on that one. The golden screwdriver operator really left his mark. Was fun to watch your work a round on this one. Thanks for another great repair video.
Omg poor little radio, rescued from the butcher shop ! Only to live once more. That owner is lucky you were willing to touch that radio and give it some love.
Saw your video today and I am sad that shipping from Norway is too expensive. Would realy liked it if you could fix my 857D! Great video, Peter. Great job!
Come to the words that cannot say what if to me i had to buy new one ,wow you are great .as time i have same problem with my iCom 751A too ,as the memories card were failing . so i still will follow your news on any fixing .. great ..
Hello Peter! Thank you for the great and interesting videos! I learned so many from them! I have Yaesu FT-857D and i love it very much, i use it in different bands. But i was very upset that on 2-m and 70-band it has not so good reception of RF, like on others bands. I know that electrical part for 2-m and 70-cm bands in FT 857d simple and not the best. But i am sure that with your help we will be able to revise and possibly to make it better. What can you advice to check and possibly change in scheme to make the reception of RF signal on 2-m and 70 -cm bands better ? I checked and compare the reception of 2-meter RF signal on FT-857 with Quasheng UV2-plus radio and to my surprise the reception of RF on Quansheng uv2-plus with external antena (superheterodyne too) is looks better (less noise and better hearing of weak remote stations). I hope to get the advice from you to make FT-857D work better here.
Excellent work Peter I love the way you explained every thing in details. Sad to see someone destroy such a great radio like that. How much Will such a repair like this cost? Thanks for sharing 👍 I'm subscribing to your channel now👌😆
nice job Peter its hard work to take over a job after some one else has been messing arround with everything. i find it better to do a quick alignment first as that shows up many faults after some one else has been playing. that was expensive work that many professionals would not take on. well done and Merry christmas to u.
Hi Gay, yes it is no fun to take over a repair like this..Concerning alignment i´t was not possible in this case as we had no function.. Thanks for stepping in 73
Good morning, back again enjoyed your quest to restore the station yet again and useful to which it is intended. Keep going this way and you will certainly more followers in. remains for me to wish you a nice 2nd Christmas and a happy and healthy 2017. '73
Nice video! The FT857D was my first legitimate ham radio, where I had a license, and transmitted. I am driving past the uranium mine in Utah, heading for Colorado, so Frohe Weihnachten!! The tailings pile is always lit up like it's Christmas. I hope those are electric lights, and the overburden is not glowing!! Ihre Familie Gott Segnen
I dropped the control head for my 857D into a bucket of water, and dirty socks. I got very lucky. The radio would not talk to the ATAS 120D antenna before my accident, but after it's bath, and a quick clean & dry, it has been working fabulously well. I used some German cigarette papers to soak the water out of the display. I went and bought more of those German papers, for that reason. They work great for soaking water out of tight places.
A very good lesson, Peter. Thank you. Patience and careful thought wins. I'm curious about he 8 v regulator as it carries its own output as well as the 5v current? there must be a heatsink on the mainboard . . .
Golden AngleGrinder you mean, what a hackjob people have done to that radio, thumbs up Peter for fixing that correctly!👍Most techs would not touch that radio anymore!73s51
my 857d also came back from he shop and work well for about 30 days. they replace 3 ceramic filters and did a realignment so the hf would have rf output. now the hf receive is back down again and my ssb is off .5hzs high from what a follow ham told me.
I really enjoy your sharing your excellent trouble shooting skills. Thank you. What make and model of camera do you use? It's video quality is excellent.
:-o ...... noooooo ...... is it really true? The repair previously has left incredibly ugly traces. When I saw this I was really shocked. Peter, you're really a brave repairman. Now you have earned a few relaxing days. I wish you a merry christmas 73 Bernd
Hello Peter, I just bought an 857D with some issues to fix and love to see your videos to learn! I’ve noticed a very curious coincidence between that radio and mine. Next to the regulator there’s a inductor. In between, on the board, there’s a small piece of tape with some white paste. Also there’s a small smd resistor on the corner of the variable can which goes to gnd. According to the board layout there’s nothing like that. Well, my 857 has the very same thing. Couldn’t find anything on internet. Wondering what that is? If you or anyone else could tell me what that is I’ll appreciate. Thank you! Best wishes Diego
Wow, that's nasty. I'm surprised you repaired that, I'd have been very wary of putting my name to a board that bad. Was the original 'factory' regulator on the destroyed part of the board? Love the videos, please keep making them and a happy new year.
Thanks for feed-back Clint. Well as I said in the video...this repair is without any warranty so under ´this agreement we can do it..but you are right it is a risk.. Yes the regulator was in the area of the destroyed part. 73
Full marks for your commitment mate, I service radios but I would have taken one look at that mess and put the lid back on and sent it back. I hope you charged at least 200€ because as far as I would be concerned that radio was BER until you gave it the kiss of life. I would only have a go after that cowboy if it was a mates radio. If you want to work with SMT then you need to invest in the correct equipment, it looks like the bodger before you used an angle grinder and arc welder in there.
Another Great Video Peter. I'm confused!, I thought Butchers worked on meat not Radios, so its not just Cb radios get completely messed around with. Keep up the great work Thanks Justin
TRX Bench i have a yeasu like the one in the video. the audio on AM is very flat and weak and on ssb seems to be fair to ok. any recommendation. dont know history of radio. Maybe mic is poor or is AM just not a good mode on these
Great repair. Nice job relocating the 5v regulator like that, very professional. I'm assuming you let the owner know that there's no guarantee, as anything can happen when a multi-layer pcb gets damaged like that. Interesting that the person(s) who worked on it before were smart enough to cut away the damaged part of the pcb without shorting the ground layer, but not smart enough to route the missing 5v supply, and also why the heck would they mess with the alignment like that?
Thank you Steve. Yes this repair is without any guarantee, as you said we can't say what will be next..No idea why he was messing around with the alignment that much. Never seen something like that before.. All the best and 73
Repairs like this should be against the Geneva convention. Thank goodness that Peter was on hand to help this poor radio back to some kind of normality. War is hell : (
personally, i wouldn't have bothered to repair it. what a mess. i would have looked for a new board or just toss it in the parts bin if cant get a new board. congrats on getting it working again. 73's
When you turned that board over, revealing the nasty damage around the regulators, I found myself wanting to hunt down the guy that did it and slap him right across the face. (ha!)
Olá tudo bem ?? Eu tenho um deste porém original. Nunca foi mexido . Ele está desta forma . Ao ligar fica piscando o painel. Qual peça estraga para que o equipamento venha travar o pll ??
Sorry Peter that radio has had the golden screwdriver gone through it and I will tell you that the best thing to do is replace the whole board with a new one .
Terrible what mess some old school "tv repairman" can do to a hardly engineered pcb.. at least they should follow your channel or go learn to solder before attempting repairs in this kind of equipment.. hi Keep it up, always like to follow you along! Happy holidays! 73 de YO5PVJ
Thank you Andrei. Yes it is a bit of learning to handle the SMD solder work.. But at the end I personally like the smd stuff much more than through hole stuff. 73
once again an excellent video. i really want you to do a through video on Icom A110 tranceiver. icom is wonderful radio but too less information is available on internet. your fan
Thnx and by the way putting this radio serviceable really shows how passionate you are for your work. kindly give me your personal email id and contact number also. you really are SUPERB !!!
TRX Bench because even if replace it, it will get damaged again due to bad DESIGNE of some high voltage passing through, I have never used AM only when listening to Air traffic control on VHF ... see my Facebook today @ ali AlKulaib and see the filter removal by taking out the elements inside ... 73 de 9K2MB
