This is the second video in a mini-series looking at upgrades to an old Lima ringfield/pancake motor-driven Class 47 locomotive, enabling it to be used on a DCC layout alongside more modern models.
Due to the length of time that it takes to carry out all of the modifications, the lighting segment of the project has been split into two separate videos, Part 2a and Part 2b. In this part, we begin to look at installing directional lighting.
The video covers the removal of the dummy forward lights, drilling holes for new rear lights, preparing new working headlights and headcode maps using miniature LEDs.
NB. This is a step-by-step video produced in response to subscriber requests. If you're not up for a long video looking at each part in detail, this isn't the video for you!
The wiring diagram referred to in the video can be downloaded here: www.strathpefferjunction.com/dcc-decoder-wiring-diagrams-for-non-dcc-ready-locomotives
Items required for the modification work and installation are:
- Miniature pre-wired surface-mount LEDs (4 x warm white, 2 x cold white & 4 x red)
- Resistors (2.5K ohm & 10K ohm)
- 1mm dia. fibre optic
- Paint stripper
- Cyanoacrylate glue (Superglue)
- Glue 'n Glaze glue
- BlackTak
- Kapton tape
- Heat shrink
- Hot air gun or cigarette lighter
- Soldering iron, solder & liquid flux
- Pin vice and drill bits
- Various tools, including: jeweller's screwdrivers, small side cutters, wire strippers, modelling saw, an exacto knife and a cutting mat.
In Part 2b, we'll finish preparing the rear lights and then move onto wiring everything up and getting it all functional...
Thank you very much for watching. Please comment, like, share and subscribe!

Thanks, Guy. Very much appreciated. Part 2b came out in the wee small hours (it was uploading over night), so you've not long to wait! If you've any queries, just drop me a line. The main thing when wiring up the directional lights is to remember that if there are two cabs, no.2 end should be reversed for it to operate in a directional way.

Superb how to again, have a good collection of Lima Locos bought over many years, which I intend fitting lighting and TTS sound to, So your series is invaluable. Look forward to remaining parts.

Many thanks, Jim. I really appreciate the kind words and support. I wasn't sure with these videos whether to keep it really brief or to cover each step. I went with the latter. I know it makes them long (and some folk may not be up for that), but I've watched videos in the past where I wished they'd explained all the little bits as it's not always so obvious if you've not done it before, so I thought I'd go with that for this mini-series. There's always the skip button if folk have heard it before! :)

Nice work there. Small suggestion. When you're drilling holes for things like the red marker lights you've done here... use your model scalpel and use it to poke a precise dent at the centre where the hole will be drilled. It works like a shallow pilot hole to give a guide so the drill bit doesn't accidentally jump to one side or another.

Do like the username, of course the original junction was Fodderty Jnc but no one ever called it that on the railways except the knowlessmen in far away London :)

Indeed. I can see the original Junction from the house. I wanted to make it a combination of the junction and the village, rather than just adopt one of the two former station names here.

Hmmm. It's quite a few years since I bought them now. I'll see if I can find a link, and if so, I'll post it here. You'll find them on easy though I'm sure. Searching for 'miniature prewired led' or similar.
