@@zekeharris5276 Sftu minnesota is one of if not the best team in the nba right now, they didn’t need those players, they just kept building a squad that’s great on offense and defence, and that last part is mainly thanks to Gobert
@@benadrylcucumberman981 bro they were terrible last year. So half a season of good play is equal to 5 players and 4 picks? 2nd round exit at best isn't worth all of that. And they gave up defensive talent to aquire him which just makes it a bad trade
Don't be so quick to downplay this trade. It was more than just a copy machine. It printed and copy too. That's like having a franchise player in your office back in 2003.
As a Timberwolves fan, I was hella annoyed with the Gobert trade at first. Really seemed like a rash decision (to say the least). However, this 2023-2024 season, he's proven to be one of the more valuable members of the team in many occasions and is on track to win his 4th DPOY with our #1 D.
Minnesota having Anthony Edwards and the young supporting cast it does is another reason I thought calling the Gobert trade the worst of all time was a highly exaggerated claim.
Few things: - The TWolves trade seemed bad at the time and is still an overpay, but Minnesota's 1st in the west and is a surefire contender. - Ainge gave up a boatload of picks in that 2007 trade (7 alone for KG iirc) so if they didn't win a title it was a failure. (Edit: should also mention that this team almost failed multiple times: they went to 7 against the 8th-seeded Hawks and LeBron’s Cavs, then 6 games each against Detroit and LA., including a 24-point comeback in Game 3 of the Finals.) - Fultz ruined his shoulder, but he would've been a star had that not happened. - Kobe refused to play for the Hornets. - Rodman was an absolute cancer on the Spurs. He didn't stick to defensive assignments, constantly misbehaved, and was a huge reason they lost in the 1995 playoffs.
@@JacksonWalter735 Kobe and Pau only beat them once. In 2009 KG got injured and missed the entire postseason. Orlando beat them in 7. And in 2010 all the big three were noticeably worse than in 2008, especially KG. Boston also didn’t have Perk so Pau feasted. LA wasn’t as top-heavy but their team was constructed way better, and they had Phil Jackson while Boston had Doc Rivers. So the fact it was even close says something imo.
That Westbrook one was personal huh lol. And the spurs trading Rodman isn’t even all that bad. It was all about fit. Rodman was NOT going to play with Pop and the spurs.
Saying the wolves won 41 games with rudy without mentioning kat's 60+ missed games is a huge cherry pick lmfao. Saying kessler played better defense is fine, he did slightly. But let's not leave out the fact rudy averages 2x as many points and like 5 more rebounds per game.
It’s great that Gobert and the Wolves are playing much better this season, but I also understand the true value of this trade is gonna be judged in the playoffs.
You released this 41 min ago knowing Gobert is a rebounding/block league leader on the #1 team on the West while Kessler and Vando are coming off the bench in reduced roles lol nooooo way
@@Heyjjay0 So Kessler, playing 18 min off the bench for Utah is a real star, but Gobert starting for the #1 Wolves is not. Got it. I never said he was a star btw, I said he was a rebounding/block leader, which is undisputed fact. The Moses Malone example was better, I wish this video started with that. Overall it's a good video.
Gobert was an overpay for sure, but shouldn’t be part of this list. Kessler’s stats show he is actually one of the best run defenders in the league right now with opponents shooting 20% below their average. Insane.
I’m far from a wolves fan. But this season definitely changed the narrative of the trade. As of right now it absolutely seems worth it. Now they still overpayed a lot but the trade isn’t a failure.
One thing people overlook about the Rudy Gobert trade is that the Timberwolves did it to surround Anthony Edwards with winning basketball early in his career, which is something that they massively failed at when developing Kevin Love, Ricky Rubio and then Towns and Wiggins. While Rudy Gobert hasn't had the most success in the postseason he's been on team's that at least made the playoffs every year which Minnesota can't say has been accomplished since the KG day's
@@OkSlouth how they gonna pay all of them? Rudy's contract is massive. They already have Rudy, Kat and Ant on max contract.Ant and Jaden Macdaniel are still on their rookie/smaller deal, Conley is expiring. Naz Ried is prolly gonna demand more money. Their window for a chip is not long IMO. They are already near the salary cap this season, and next season it will be higher.
Let's not forget when the Knicks threw away their whole core of players, even the water boy, to get Melo early midway season when they could've just waited till summer to get him for free and keep a really good team.
@@SIB-6 that's partially Melo fault though he didn't get along with anyone he was the one who demanded the Knicks move Lin after he missed games with injuries plus he's the one who wanted Amare Stoudemire even though he was super injury prone at the time.
@@Reese1882yw not only that, he was the one who constantly demanded both Denver and Knicks to do the trade ASAP, and because of his desperation and Knicks FOMO effect they went with it, which did them wrong.
@@redmangoose182 they had Ibaka already but they didn’t want to go into luxury tax and people forgot that Harden played horrible in the finals that year.
Yes, because Harden was wont 3 championships since the trade...oh, he's not won a single thing! And Houston gave up their future for Harden in the form of a lot of draft picks. Harden wasn't going to sign any free agent deal with OKC so why not get something out of it? One of those draft picks became Steven Adams. Harden had already declined the offer made by OKC. This was a no-brainer and our forgetfulness shouldn't make us think the trade was bad.
The second I heard the Gobert trade being brought up I knew this dude has no real nba knowledge whatsoever, the Gobert trade was well and truly worth it. What did the wolves really give up? A few late first rounders and a few average role players??? They’re now first seed in the west and have been for 2 months, and they have by far the best defensive team in the league. They literally got exactly what they wanted. Bro has absolutely no ball knowledge
Both things can be true at the same time. It wasn't one of the worst trades but they still overpaid for him, I mean compared to other stars, the amount they traded for to what they got. They definitely overpaid. But Gobert isn't a bad player by any means and the media and people were unfair. He needed to adjust to the system which last year was just bad. But glad that they're at the top of the world rn and as someone who doubted Gobert, I'm happy to be wrong.
I really don't think it was that big of an overpay honestly. It was a bunch of role players and a few late picks for the best rim protector in the entire league. The system wasn't bad last year, there was just a ton of injuries and the team never actually got a chance to gel and figure things out. It's just a horrific choice to put him in this video, especially first.@@blackhand8299
As a wolves fan, The Gobert trade turned out to be great. All the first round picks are overrated. And this season, Gobert was way better than those 5 players that were traded. Gobert is as valuable as Ant and KAT come playoffs time
@@user-hk8jx6uk5jjust because those picks were just role players doesn't mean they didn't overpaid. All it took was 1 good Player and it would be even harder to justify the Gobert Trade as it is.
@blackhand8299 so who is the one good player? A guy from a draft pick 4 years from now?? What is your point? Unfortunately, the Wolves are good, but will not win a championship until KAT is traded.
Don’t forget Utah traded Trey Lyles and the 24th pick in the 2017 draft to Denver for the 13th pick. Utah took Donovan Mitchell at 13. In 2013 Utah traded the 46th pick and cash to Denver for the 27th pick. Utah drafted Rudy at 27. Denver won a title so fans cant really complain, but those are some lopsided trades.
As an OKC Thunder fan I still can't believe OKC traded Harden. The mistake that they made was signing Ibaka first for 48 million which didn't leave enough to give Harden a legit offer. They should have waited to sign Ibaka and made sure they locked Harden down and then if they lost Ibaka so be it. Ibaka was the expendable player, not Harden. Had they kept KD, Russ and Harden together the Warriors dynasty never would have happened because OKC would have been kicking their ass every year on their way to multiple championships.
Tim Connally made the Gobert trade which is ironic because of all the shrewd picks he made for Denver. He helped build Denver into the championship team, Calvin Booth put the perfect finishing touches on it.
As an Orlando Magic fan, the first thing that came to mind was Rob Dumbass Hennigan trading Victor Oladipo, Sabonis (2 future all stars) and draft capital to OKC for Serge Ibaka (Out of the league a few years later). That's an all timer right there.
It gets even crazier when you realize Sam Presti used the same package (Oladipo+Sabonis) to get Paul George in a win-win trade with the Pacers. Not to mention what he got for PG from the Clippers. Man, he sure compensated for that Harden trade.
I know Marc gasol was an amazing player before anything, but k Brown for pau gasol was crazy at the time haha, I Loved gasol on the grizzly and thought he was super underrated since West has kg on wolves and Duncan and saw him play a bit of times, and he was always with Spain for Olympics.
The Timberwolves have spent more time as the 1 seed this season than the rest of franchise history combined and have the best defensive rating in the league. I feel like they dont have many complaints atm.
“The harden trade marked the beginning of the end for the Thunder dynasty” What? We had no dynasty. We were a super young team with one finals appearance. We continued to be contenders for the next few seasons until KD left. That comment doesn’t make any sense.
Adrian Dantley made every team he played for worse. It's not a coincidence that the year the pistons traded Dantley for Mark Aguirre, they immediately won back to back championships with basically the identical roster. Bob McAdoo did win an MVP but is considered by most NBA historians as one of the weakest MVPs in undoubtedly the weakest NBA Era. He also wasn't a winner until he became a sixth man/ role player. I'm surprised the Magic Johnson trade isn't on here cause that literally started the showtime Lakers and he's considered by most a top 5 player of all time and the goat of all PGs. Also, I agree with all the comments saying the Gobert trade should no longer be on this list. As a nuggets fan, you should have mentioned how we gave the timber wolves the 13th pick, which was used on Donovan Mitchell, for Trey effing Lyles AND we also traded the 27th pick to the Timberwolves which was used to draft Rudy Gobert so yeah....
The 1998 decision wasnt that bad Robert Taylor just had more to go off which made gm trust him no one really knew how great Dirk could be until his 4th year in Dallas
Okay to be fair to the Spurs, that “Best rebounder” has a lot other strings attached that are not going to show up in basketball stats, except maybe technical fouls and ejections. My favorite Dennis Rodman fact is that as of recently he was good personal friends with Kim Jong Un, and has spent more time in his presence and more time visiting North Korea, than any other American.
As a Thunder stan the trade was dumb with Harden but we really had a better record without Kev Martin, and would've went back to the chip had it not been for a injury
The Spurs trading Rodman had nothing to do with talent and everything to do with his attitude. Perdue was also a big part of the Spurs 99 championship.
Yeah and also imagine 0 rim protection. Biggest part the wolves are the one seed is them allowing least ppg in the west by a pretty far margin. I would still nut if wolves had KD to be fair
@@Boof37 dude KD is a 1 in a million opportunity! There is no other player like KD in the nba and there probably will never be!! But for gobert there’s guys in the league currently arguably even better than him. Minnesota overpaid for a player that can be easily replaced but you can’t ever get a KD
@@thecoolrich no they wouldn't. If you're the Suns, why give up a in your words "1 in a million player" for some scrubs and 5 firsts? That's basically asking you to get fired as a GM and fr your team to be stuck in BBall hell
Rudy is getting another DPOY This year and is playing the best defense of his career. Don’t know if i can make it through the video talking about Kessler and vando are better defenders
Honestly as a Lakers fan when Russ trade happened i told myself wtf manager thinking... And that Kobe trade for Divac was Jerry Wests genius if im remembering right.
The Hawks wasn't quite so bad, as they got 2 future Hall of Fame players in exchange for the draft rights to what turned out to be the most dominant defensive player of all time. But Rochester? What where they thinking?
Rudys trade would’ve only been bad if the team was around the 8th seed. First round picks mean nothing to a 1st seed. Drafting Gleague players for no reason. Essentially gave up a couple of players and 5 gleague players. Maybe 1-2 beecome rotation pieces but thats it. We put alot of value on 1st round picks sometimes without taking account what that pick might actually be for that team.
Wtf is this hate against Gobert ???? Do you even make sense ???? They are the first team in the West, how do you even think it's not worth ??????????????
Actually Jason Tatum’s pick was from the kings then traded to the 76ers for dearron Fox then traded for Fultz and fultz pick was from Brooklyn not tatum’s
