Hi, thanks for your extremely informative videos! I'm still struggling with getting the information about starches (bad)/ resistant starches (good?) and how to calculate them in the daily intake. Do you have the info on which is which as it is not written on packages? For instance are legumes like chickpeas allowed or not? I've read as well you could eat cold potatoes but I am extremely suspicious!! 😀 Apologies if you have been through this already, I don't see it in your list. If so could you give the link? Thanks! ☺

@@drekberg Super! It would be great if it could include the different types of flours. Almond flour is well known of course but they say it's all good as well for green banana flour (which is delicious by the way), coconut flour, hemp flour, quinoa flour, chickpeas flour, rice flour, etc... @Baron Bar Did you call yourself a cell biologist who writes reviews with peer-reviewed literature? I don’t think so. If you are, you must be working for pharmaceutical companies or your “professional work” is funded by drug companies. I don’t know you but from observing your comments, you are a sloppy careless untrustworthy reader as you totally missed his name for someone else. His last name is Ekberg not Elberg. As a cell biologist you should pay more attention to details or you should review your comments before posting it. After all, you are only accepting “peer-reviewed” materials! Just learn to spell his name correctly next time and save your peer-reviewed comments for your pharmaceutical friends!

It has something to do with the diet you grow up with. For example if your parents give you a healthy diet and access to it you will grow up not liking the rates of chemical sweeteners. For me I had and still have a healthy diet but the problem for me is stuff like cake or some sweet fast foods that I bought or my mom occasionally. It's stuck with me and cutting this habit slowly but yeah.

After 50 plus years of insulin resistance, multiple diets that worked temporarily, poor eating habits and a sugar habit, at 70 yrs old now and pre diabetic at a whopping 275 lbs on a 5'9" frame I have finally found the answer that will reverse all this thanks in part to Dr Sten's videos. I have lost 25 lbs in just over 5 weeks doing intermittent fasting and Keto, now on OMAD after a month of 16/8 and I feel reborn, that there is now hope for me!

Dr Sten, thank you! At 50+ I was chubby with hefty “love handles” and thought, “oh well, that’s life, this is my body type and there’s nothing I can really do to change that.” I had heard diets don’t work and had little time or patience to exercise… then I started intermittent fasting 16/8 and dropped about 6 pounds in a month. In 6 months I lost 30 lbs and reached my weight goal while feeling much better. I have cut way back on carbs and try to walk for about an hour in the morning and evening to hit a nice balance. This is a way of life…not a diet and has made a huge +++ effect on my health!

He said, while comparing low cal with fasting, that if you reduce your calorie from 2000 to 1,500 you’ll lower your BMR, but when fasting, you can eat 2000 every other day, so 1000 calorie per day, and you won’t reduce your BMR! How does that make any sense! Reducing your calorie even less will preserve your BMR?!
@marinap69
@marinap69 Год назад
That’s because when you don’t have a sufficient meal (it’s lower in calories, and your body doesn’t feel satisfied with it), your body will try to retain as many calories as it can by slowing down your metabolism- that’s when you eat three times a day but each time with insufficient calories. On the other hand, when if you eat once a day, but it’s a full meal which gives you a sense of satiety, your body relaxes and does not feel the need to reduce your metabolism. Our body knows in this case that when the next meal comes there will be plenty of good nutritional food and it will be enough to “make it happy”, to satisfy its needs, and therefore there is no need to conserve the calories, or to store the fat.

Every BODY reacts to food differently and it's up to individual people to listen to how their body responds to carbs, fats, proteins etc. If you plateau in your journey, this is when you evaluate your eating pattern and modify what you think could prevent you from achieving your goals. It is overwhelming but his explanation makes so much sense. I am on a low carb/keto FB page and what plan works for one person may not work for others. People complain often about stalling, Dr. Eckberg gives great insight in layman's terms on what individual should observe within themselves to continue in their success.

I fasted for 8 days a year ago, I only drank water. I worked, slept and exercised the same as usual and tried running in the latest stages of it though that was unsuccessful. I've been on OMAD (One Meal A Day) for 13 months ever since. Maybe 2 days a month I'll have two meals a day but that's always within 3 or 4 hours between each of the two. Usually at mid morning or noon. I grew up athletic but turned skinny fat and out of shape in my late twenties. When I turned 30 I started to take intermittent fasting and fasting more seriously (I've done it years beforeas well but at a lower level and inconsistently). I am 31 now, OMAD for 13 months in a row and also consistent workout schedule that consists of bodyweight exercises primarily focusing the lower body and recently implementing upper body exercises as well. Running 2 times a week (those two days are locked on the calendar and haven't missed one in months) without landing on my heels, only toes (30 min run before sunrise). Strict sleeping schedule (bed at 9pm - up at 6am), living barefoot and exposing myself to cold as much as possible. No more microwaved food and 0% junk food, take outs, bakery sweets, etc. Reduced intake of carbs and increased usage of fat like extra virgin olive oil or butter (no more inflamatory vegetable seed oils). As you can see, it's a chain of things, driven by a few main elements such as diet, or a workout goal. During these 13 months I've noticed some effects. Increased focus. Increased stress tolerance. Increased drive and confidence. Body FEELS better, and mind seems sharper, cleaner. My skin got better (used to get a rash around my nose and eyebrows, patches of red skin that later turned scaly. Doctor said it's chronic and I can only treat it with a lotion they gave me...). If it comes up, it's because I had some dense sugar (happens around christmas and similar celebration situations) or abused carbs. Temptation resistance has increased considerably. Bodyweight went from 86kg to 68kg. Bodyfat percentage went from 20% at 86kg to 13% at 68kg with no muscle mass loss. While doing OMAD, I still manage to fast for 3 days once a month. You guys have no idea how much my mind, body, relationships, contact list, business opportunities, finances, economy and professional work has improved in A SINGLE YEAR. They've always told me life ends at 30 (meaning you lose freedom, can't grow anymore, etc). Life has just started for me. And it all begins with a simple but hard choice. Who do you wanna be? Make that choice and stick to it. Great things take time and you are on your way to make them happen. You will manage as long as you don't break a simple rule. DON'T QUIT. Your body adapts. It just needs time, but you always quit before it can change anything.

I've been doing 16/8 for some time now and am always worried about whether or not I'm taking in enough cals during my eating window. I've searched all over youtube and this is the first video that really explained it to where it made sense. You have a new sub my man, thanks a bunch for your work!

If you eat 3 banana it is too much. Avoid too much of anything. Balance diet, u good to go. Avoided seeds flour, nuts flour even is good but it will put u on too much fat . The carbs they eat are store bought bread and bagles, muffins, poatato chips, french fries, all highly processed and full of sugar , salt and oil and carbs. Fasting with whole foods plant based should give the superior result of all. Not high fat, animal protein diet.

I have been really enjoying your videos. I would love to see a video on foods to eat after a longer fast. I usually do OMAD fasting but also mix it up with longer fasts. Coming of these longer fasts in the right way is more important than the shorter fasts, so would love to hear what you have to say about the best way of doing that. Also would love to look at the math of calories to grams (or pounds for the Americans). I know there are a lot of variables but some guidance on it would be good.
@ednalansdowne232
@ednalansdowne232 Год назад
Here is some basic info on food calories. First, the numbers typically tabulated are derived from what is called a bomb calorimeter. The food (fuel) is literally burned in a closed system with sufficient oxygen to complete combustion, and the heat produced is captured and measured, usually by how much of a temperature rise occurs in the calorimeter water bath, with a defined amount of water. This testing established the fact that proteins and carbohydrates have 4 calories of heat value per gram, fat has 9 calories per gram, and alcohol has 7 calories per gram. These are for dry weights. Now, there are two things to take into account. Much of what you eat is not 'dry'. A pound (454 grams) of bread does not have 1 pound of carbohydrates, typical meats similarly are not 100% protein. Boneless, skinless chicken for example is typically just under 20% protein. Butter has some water and protein in it so it is not 100% fat, however most oils are essentially 100% fat. The second thing is that your body necessarily access all of the calories in the food. You will not digest all of the fiber for example, or you may have malabsorption problems. The amount of usable calories that you need depends on factors such as how active you are and how high your metabolic rate is. These are also influenced by your body mass, what the temperature and humidity of your surroundings are, how much clothing you wear, etc. A pound of body fat has the energy equivalent of 3500 calories. That is approximately the calorie requirement of two days needs for a sedentary person.

All you need is a Nutrition Tracker App, like MyFitnessPal or Lose It. Based on your BMI & TDEE (which they calculate for you), these apps show you if you are under-eating or over-eating. You choose if your goal is to Gain, Maintain, or Lose weight, as well as at which healthy rate you’d like to achieve these goals (ie. the # of lbs you’d like to lose per week: .5 lbs/wk, 1 lb/wk, 1.5 lb/wk, etc). I can only speak for MyFitnessPal (free version) over the following features, but the app also shows you if you’re keeping within your Macros, which you can set to your own preferred percentages. And it also syncs with your fitness watch so that the app automatically adjusts (increases) your Daily Caloric Allowance depending on how much you’ve exercised (how many calories you’ve burned) that day to prevent you from inadvertently eating less calories than your body actually needs due to how active you’ve been.

I have been fasting for one year now, on may 2020, I started IF, but the hunger went away and I started prolonged fasting, first for 3 days, then 5 days for a month, then 12 days, 12 days and 21 days, lost 30 kilos in 2 1/2 months , after refeed and some days later I gained 7 kilos. I started 2-3 days of fasting for 2 months, i was 143 kilos when I started, and I’m 6’2, I went down to 106 kilos, but I gained weight right away 7 kilos after I went back eating and 5 more in 6 months, even though I did keto and IF almost everyday, some months I go for 5 days or 10 days of prolonged fasting, I have been doing 18 hr IF and lifting weights right before my first meal and I have gain lots of muscle I asume due to the HGH in the 18 hr fast, but 2 months ago I’ve notice that I am gaining weight even though I’m doing 2 days water fast every week and eating around 2000 cal, because my stomach can take any more food, some times I do 1 meal and a bullet proof coffee, because it’s too much food. I have done 170 days of water fast in 400 days in total, and taking my electrolytes and teas (ginger, turmeric, green and black teas, etc). In this last 2 months I’ve gained 2 inches in my stomach, doing everything right, now I move to eating my 3 meals a day and trying to eat 3000 calories a day to see if I lowered my BMR of too much fasting, I hope I start seeing some results, I think my body is storing everything I eat in my belly as a distribution center. Do you have any thoughts ? I recently did a 10 day water fast and only lost 1.5 kilos after refeeding, that’s why I am concern ! And some weeks not eating for 2 days and gaining weight in those weeks! Hope you can read this post and give me your feedback, thanks I have lost my weight by using your info in your videos , thnx for sharing your knowledge 👍🏻 !!! I’m very greatfull !!!

Wow respect the fact that you keep on trying! You did some real fasting, that must be so frustrating to gain weight while fasting this long. I feel sorry for you, also the fact that you didn't get a response!😪

I'm 6 days in on a lightweight fasting routine that i started on a whim. Dont care that I'm down a few lbs already, number means little to me, what matters a lot is much more stable energy, vastly reduced sugar cravings and BLOATING has gone down. A nice win for only doing a 14/10 imf

Would be nice to see some ranges for grams fat, carbs, and protein base don weight and activity. Not expecting to see my exact situation but I could comfortably extrapolate, given a range. IDK. Good vids, though.

Just eat balance diet don’t over eat carb, protein, or fat. Intermittent fast is great start with 13 hours don’t touch food.

Hi sten How do you know you have insulin resistance or insulin sensitivity. I have high cholesterol 8-4 and I’m taking meds for high blood pressure. 156/90 average. My gp just give s me meds to reduce it without tryi to find why it up in the first place. I believe fasting helps reduce bp. How much exercise should I do walking wise half hour per day?? Thank s for a great channel. And sorry again for the Dave asprey comment I really messed that up.

Love your videos and learning a lot. But still very confused about the calorie thing. How much is too much and how much is not enough? Is the limit the number of calories you burn every day?

Many seem convinced that "the good life" consists of moving hardly at all and also be able to eat very well and frequently. That's supposedly how rich people lived and live. But isn't it ironical that this good life makes you old and sick soon ?

I really laud the people who are successful with nutrition and fasting. It's all so confusing to me. Calories aren't important, but they are. Protein is important but not too much! Fats (healthy) are good but if you eat too much, you won't lose stored fat. Exercise, but if you work out too hard, your body uses consumed glucose and not the stored fat. Geezus, how can I ever get this straight? Six weeks in (keto) and I'm almost defeated.

Maybe consult a Keto nutritionist to help plan out meals. That's the problem I have; planning things out. Another truth I've discovered is that a lot of times, when I feel hungry, I have to remember to drink water instead and you will feel satiated and your energy will elevate. Keep going... don't over eat : meaning just one "helping" of the fat, protein, and (maybe a little carbs) you've selected on your plate. If you're at an American restaurant it's a good chance you've got enough for two meals in front of you... eat half and save the other half for lunch the next day. As far as exercise; just go for walks. You can do this!

Sigh 😩, nobody knew losing weight could be so complicated; too much protein not enough protein, too many carbs not enough carbs, too much fat not enough fat, too many calories not enough calories, too much exercise not enough exercise, etc . . . How I long for the days of my stress-free youth when I didn't have to worry about IR, low BMR, hypothyroidism, pre-diabetes, etc. . . . Nevertheless, thank you Dr. Ekberg for providing us with this very important information.

Elsa Loebell it’s not, all these diets are FADS. Eat less, move more that’s it. It just gets harder the closer you are to goal weight and when you have lower body fat.

Hello from Australia, Can you fast too much. Is there such a thing as fasting resistance. Ver insulin resistant here age 79 female. Trying fasting 4days each month. Finding it easy. But worried about fasting getting to the point of not working. Can that happen. OMAD feels good . Low carbs. Under 5 grams daily. Clean strict keto for 3 years.

my carbs are 20 to 40 net a day, protein 70 to 80 grams a day and fat 120 to 140 grams a day, average daily calories are 1800 a day, I have 2 meals a day between 12 and 8pm I have weighed the same now for 14 months after losing 56 lbs from the start. SOOOO I am making a guess at too much fat and calories?

I absolutely hate the hypothesis of calories in - calories out. There are so many variables, that most people are off by more than 20% on a good day of counting.
@fidelmercado2621

Exactly, Calories in Calories out assumes that all colories are created equal. That is problematic

I can't gain weight or grow much muscle even when I worked out with heavy weights...
