Yep. You had a great mom. My mom was pretty good, but I craved advice. She never left me with any phrase she would always say, or words or wisdom. I even know what some of my friends parents use to always tell them for advice. My parents loved me. And led by example, by always getting up for work every day. Never taking a day off. So I learned a good work ethic. But I still wish I had some verbal advice, or something? Advice on becoming a woman, dating, on boys, on sex, on marriage . I didn’t get a talk, about any of it. Had to figure it all out on My own. Now a days…..I try to teach my kids everything I can about life.

My parents raised me saying the EXACT same phrase. My father especially. My father and I were like twins. We were best friends in the sense of we did everything together, hung out all the time, talked smack about people together, laughed, cried, and everything in between, but at the same time he was still my father and a damn good one. I miss him everyday. My mother is the mama bear and if you mess with her baby, you're gonna get mauled. I'm so grateful that I had such a wonderful childhood.

The fact that her child opened herself to her parent proves that she is a mother who isn't quick to lash out harshly whenever she hears news she doesn't like. She makes herself emotionally available to her child so her child is comfortable speaking to her about such a sensitive topic. She needs to still be firm and place boundaries, yet foster an atmosphere of open and healthy dialogue to explore this issue from various angles

Yes, however it can also mean that the mother has been acting more as a "best friend", which she shouldn't do IMHO. She said her daughter would be driving in a few months too. Sounds like she's allowed to do adult things while still being a child.

@@BeaBelfastVideos Yea, could be. It's healthy for a child to perceive a parent as not only a parent, guardian, and disciplinarian, but a friend as well, a safe place to confide in. Parents shouldn't only breed to instruct, protect, and provide, but to build a solid, wholesome, respectful, honest, and enthusiastic bond with their offspring. Wisdom will aid in properly balancing those various identity-perceptions of the parent

I was told by a licensed counsellor that I should allow my 15 year old daughters bf should be allowed to spend the night once a week. I said absolutely not. So I was labelled a bad parent.

Once the kid is already doing it, it's risk management. Say you think it's too soon and think they should slow down, but don't take steps to "make" them stop. Get them birth control, maintain consistent communication. That's all you can do. Trying to over control it will backfire. It's risk mitigation at this point, baby.

This is true. Unfortunately, like her daughter, I lost it with my boyfriend at 15 as a PASTORS daughter. It was a nightmare. But my mother put me on birth control. I'm 21 now and have been on it since I was 15. Yes, I still had sex, and yes I made some bad choices. However, I haven't gotten pregnant and I've been safe. Unfortunately it's most of the time true once you open that box, it's open. I got punished for having sex at 15, maybe rightfully so, but It didn't stop me. In no way do I think I was ready, but at that point in my life I was going to do it no matter what.

I can’t agree with you more. I don’t have kids myself because of health issues. I do however have lots of nieces and nephews. The youngest two just turned 16 in May. They’re twin boys. Their parents have two very different approaches to things like this. My brother is very open about sex. My SIL kind of has this attitude that if it’s not spoken of, it won’t happen. Yet she walked into one of her boys rooms while he was jerking off. She came right out and said that she was weirded out by it. She thinks that no kids have ever done that. She has older brothers but by the time she was in high school they had already moved out and were in college. So even if they do that at home she likely never knew it. She spoke to them about it and they told her that it was normal for boys to do things like that. She still doesn’t think it is. My brother on the other hand while he knows what it’s like to be a teen father, knows that you can’t be with your kids 24/7. So they know the risks involved and aware of the consequences.

Shortly before I turned 16 my parents pulled out all the stops to get me out of an unhealthy relationship. Took my phone, didn’t let me get a license, etc. At the time, I “hated” them (had a great relationship with them before this incident). I threatened to run away and get emancipated and all sorts of other craziness. Less than a year later I appreciated what they did for me. As a parent, I can only imagine how hard that season was for them and I’m so grateful they did everything to keep me safe.

I set the first bar at them having a good relationship and treating each other respectfully, loving, kind and them both wanting to engage in sex. That seems to have been the case. There is different opinions about if 15 is too early to have sex in general but that was not what the comment I reacted to was about. Where does this " she was just 11 yr old 4 yrs ago" come from? It`s a really strange comment. I mean she was 9 years old only 7 years ago, you know? Do you have an 11 year old child that you are imagining in that scenario or something like that?

I don’t totally agree with John here, it’s best to keep her safe and protected my opinion with birth control or condoms. As soon as she turns 16 age of consent in Washington is 16 years old. Most of the United States is 16 or higher. Some states are 15 so if that’s the case that means that most adults think that children at 16 or older can make consenting choices to have sex, I don’t know what John is talking about here, but it seems more like his moral values or religious values is in the way of what the law says. I and give them all the details of what’s going on what can happen. If you truly cannot wait, then give them protection, but you would prefer them not to have sex. as long as all the parents agree about the situation. Because if their parents don’t approve, maybe then, she has less to worry about because their parents are pulling the son away not her. Overall, my parents could control me whatsoever. They tried the best, but I was very sexually rambunctious when I was a teenager we have to live and learn from our mistakes and no amount of parenting would’ve controlled me.

Right in my late twenties and my mother as of this year doesn't know if I'm a virgin or not lol. There is no way in hell that I ever would have been comfortable enough to go to my mother as an adult and let her know what was going on in my sex life. The mom needs to try to guide her in the safest direction but she can't push her there. Or the trust or the trust she had going to her about this, is permanently dead. And that could be considered a lot more dangerous then sex.

Well, here's my opinion. Yes, 15 is young. Probably too young. But it isn't 100% destined to end in a disaster. I met my gf when we were both 15, and yes, we did "it". Here we are 7 years later still together. How ever now that I am 22, I can definitely see why any parent would agree with John here. If it was my own child, I would probably be just as protective. I guess we were "lucky".

I would try to take as many precautions as i could, take her to an ob, maybe get her on some birth control, and access to condoms. because let's face it. they won't stop. better to be safe. just my opinion.. and normally when you say no to a teen, they just want to go do , whatever you said no to even more.

At 15, most people don’t understand the full consequences of our actions. There’s a difference between consent and informed consent. It takes aging a few years to get what your parents are talking about. My first xesual encounter was at 17. Even though I was not manipulated or had a 6un held to my head, I was doing a disservice to myself. This 15 y/o girl may think this is a good idea now, but she might gain a different perspective when she enters adulthood.

@@ralegade7710 I come from a third world country and where it does happen that minors are married it’s completely illegal and it won’t be a recognised civil marriage until the age of 18. But of course we’re dealing with some serious stuff here, severe and violent rape culture, women and child abuse stats that will have your head spinning, so we just can’t afford to also be marrying off kids. But in rural areas (where there’s a lack of jobs, education, resources and all round progress), they still do it. So yeah, not a good measure to base your argument on.

I turned 16 and my parents bought me a box of condoms and gave me the talk and told me i could trust them with whatever I needed to say. I was always truthful when I was going to see a girl or if I wasn’t. I later asked them why they did that instead of taking my truck away or taking my phone away. They said because we were once teenagers and our parents did exactly that and we still found a way. Teenagers who wanna do it will always find a way. So if we can’t stop you we might as well do our best to make sure you’re safe. Also it’s not allowed in our house!

@@nicolab2075 I think you have more faith in teenagers not doing it or being scared I’m in my mid 20s now and I know for sure that about 99% of the kids I came in contact with were exactly the same weather they told their parents or not. Teenagers talk especially to each other. I’d say very very few just “don’t”

I was told by my dad that anyone I date I might marry and to not consider dating someone until I knew them well enough that I would marry them if they asked me on the first date. Saved me so much heart ache and baggage that my friends carry around especially about there first time and the guy up and leaving.

@@Kwildcat13 I saw other people in my high school break up after a few weeks or at most a couple of months. I thought they were incompetent and thought it was a stupid waste of time to be in a relationship where neither the bf nor the gf want to marry the other person, so I decided not to pursue anyone that I didn’t want to marry. Then my junior year of high school, I met my now wife. Towards the end of my junior year of high school, I asked my now wife to be my girlfriend and go out to dinner with me on a date that weekend because I knew I wanted to marry her. I was only 17 and she was only 15 and we ended up getting married and have been together ever since. It’s really not as difficult as people make it out to be as long as you use basic common sense.

This is silly...if you tell them no, they will hide it from you. This isn't a "cry for help"...it sounds like she's fine. You're just going to create rebellion. She trusted you, don't prove she made the wrong choice. Who says she feels gross or pressured? I had sex at that age and it was incredibly gentle and beautiful and consentual. Why assume it's bad?

When I told my mom I wasn’t pressured - I was - I just knew what she wanted to hear, that I was safe. She didn’t encourage me to continue this of course.. but I wish she’d have done more to limit me. I felt pressure from him. Pressure from society. And that was 20 years ago.. todays kids have so much more pressure!😢

She doesn't see the full ramifications. Also, no, he is not respectful, because it isn't respectful to do that with a girl you can't take care of and make a future with. Again, 15. @@Goonfn99Because sex complicates things. It’s brings risk that is often unnecessary into your life, your health, and the health of your partners. And not just physical risk. I saw all my friends engage in sex in school and all they got out of it was literal emotional damage. Sex really should be saved for marriage. Or at the very least, a long term relationship between adults. Not kids. Not teens.

Yup! Precisely. She can get her license but if she intends to use a car to sneak off with her bf after school, no solo car access until 18🤷🏾‍♀️. Or she can work and save towards one if she chooses. When she is being dropped off to hang out with friends, location sharing must be on. No phones after 10 pm. I didn't even get a phone until I was 15 lol. My parents knew where I was. After school I was in tutoring, student clubs, sports practice, at the library, or home. Dad dropped me off at volunteering on Saturdays and we went to church on Sundays. Kids need structure.

15 is way too late to wait to talk about sex with your kids. Especially girls. I heard most of this from my peers, school and pornograghy before my parents talked to me about it. It's really a disservice to them and they need knowledge from their parents about this. Don't make them feel ashamed for being curious and wanting to know more about it

I began dating my first boyfriend when I was 20, and I married him at 22. When I got older and wiser, I realized that I was not as mature as I thought. I was very naive about some things. Still, I can't even imagine dating at 15. My parents would not have allowed it. I hope the mom can get her daughter to realize that she is making a big mistake. One day this boy may be far in her past, and she may regret giving him so much of herself at such a young age. Girls and boys need to save some things for marriage. Mom needs to kindly set boundaries.

Dating though, also teaches you things and not just in sexual way. It teaches you about how to work in relationships, how to compromise and figure stuff out. I think you nailed it. Supporting a relationship before a certain age then opens the door to early sexual activity that you then set your child up to expecting you to support too… you know I’m avidly reading all the comments because I have a preteen daughter and I know this is coming sooner or later, the conversation at least and I think it’s a strong safeguard to just say as a parent I’m not entertaining boyfriends until the age of 16… that way the whole thing only begins at 16 instead of ripening at 16. My daughter is phenomenal and we thus far have a great relationship, but I think she knows me well enough to know I mean what I say. Period.

There is a serious medical argument for not taking chemical birth control from a young age. My sister did and she had significant difficulty getting pregnant when she finally decided she was ready to have children. A discussion of this factor might go a long way to making a young woman rethink the pharmaceutical industry's recommended advice on this subject, particularly if you include in that discussion their record on opioids and their obvious failures thereof.

Which is upsetting to me because we are close and I'm more conservative. But my understanding is most of them do not want to use contraceptives like condoms. This is why we weren't allowed to date until 16. Our parents wanted us to focus on learning about ourselves, figuring out future, and not getting sucked into drama. Since birth control was mentioned so early in their conversation, I think the girl probably had a pregnancy scare. Being too open with your kids because your parents didn't talk with you isn't the answer. They have probably been doing it for a long time now.

Birth control isn’t 100%, and 16 years later I have so many regrets about ever taking it. Several doctors have suggested that it’s why I’ve had fertility issues since I was a teen and even had multiple miscarriages. I have to disagree on this take. Her child is making an autonomous decision and being smart about it by confiding in an adult, talking about birth control, and doing it with an established partner who reportedly respects her. I’m not saying it’s ideal to start at 15 but given it is happening, it is much more important to empower her to be safe both emotionally and physically than to try and put the genie back in the bottle (which isn’t going to work). You say 15 year olds can’t make good choices but she is showing her capacity to make good choices by confiding in her mom and talking about birth control.

The issue I’m having is if your kids gonna have sex. They’re going to have sex. You have to have honest conversations about concerns, risks, health etc, but you can’t forbid it at this point. It’s already happening. Forbidding it will stop your daughter from being honest. Point blank. My honesty was always met with restriction as a child and I started lying. I do not look back and thank my parents for that. There needed to be conversation and trust.

Teenagers, even the more mature ones are still too young for this. Even though she can't control her daughter, her daughter needs to know that she disagrees with this decision her daughter has made and then share why and all the risks associated with that (even the damage birth control can do) but that she still loves her so much and is there for her. I will tell my daughters those things but also say "hey if you get pregnant, you have to be the adult and take care of that baby (or babies). I will be there to help but I will not take over while you still run around and act like a child." Adult decisions = adult responsibilities.

That’s bizarre advice. Once the daughter opened that door, she’s not going back so the mom should be concerned about the safety of her kid. It’s creating a problem where there isn’t. What’s the practical advice? She shouldn’t get birth control: she might get pregnant. My first time was at 15. I can't say for sure if I was too young or not. As a Christian I slightly regret it but the main thing is that it was always in a safe situation with someone I trusted who also trusted me. As young as 15 is, the main thing is that they're safe.

That’s why I wasn’t allowed to date until 18. I think allowing a boyfriend and dates and alone time sets up the scene for this type of stuff. Our society doesn’t value courtship anymore. Then we wonder why men treat us like 💩

15 is much too young for a girl to start having sex. They get emotionally attached and then when the relationship goes south, they can't handle the devastation it brings. They become shattered beyond recognition.

The fact is that at 15 her daughter is still below the age of consent. She can't legally condone or allow it. Most people cannot handle the psychological consequences of it until 18 or 19, so that's the kind of age she should be forcing her daughter to wait until.

Are you kidding? I began having sex at 15 & I regret it. Sure it felt 'natural' but we are not animals. We are made in God's image and sex is for marriage. Period. My life was chock full of promiscuity, drugs, depression, shame, worthlessness and more. It was when I committed to do things God's way, life had meaning. She needs to tell her daughter this. She must forbid her daughter from ruining her life. No sex.

I'm sorry to hear you regret your experience, it's important to discuss with a teen to wait until their ready and make sure they are safe and with someone they trust. Teens will have sex with or without our permission, it's about teaching them to not be peer pressured and be safe. It's better your teen is comfortable coming to you than being afraid too. Set boundaries within your home, such as no locking themselves in the bedroom and curfew so sex is less likely. My mom is a nurse and spoke to me honestly as a teen and I thank her for that. The best advice she gave me was, don't let anyone peer pressure you, make sure it's with someone you won't regret, and ALWAYS ALWAYS use protection.

There are hormone-free female contraception choices. The copper IUD and a diaphragm, to name two.

@@aimeeglatt3299 These are good options for some but not all. Copper IUD can still cause other issues, and the diaphragm isn't very effective even when used correctly. Condoms and fertility tracking (done correctly) are going to have the least side effects. The best option is to combine methods. For instance Diaphragm + pull-out method combined actually has over 99% efficacy.

So wait....daughter with all trust and honesty and sincerity and maturity, goes to her mother when she COULD have just gone in secret to her pediatrician (mom’s own admission) and Dr. D’s advice is to ‘not let her get her drivers license next year, and drive her wherever she goes.’ WOW. Good luck with her EVER going to Mom about ANYTHING again until she angrily leaves the house the second she turns 18. Lord I hope Mom didn’t handle things that way! 😳

If you had a 15 year old and she comes to you with all trust, honesty, sincerity and maturity and tell you that she is taking drugs and alcohol, you would allow her to do so because you are afraid of actually stepping up and being a real parent to your child?? Dr John was right for telling her that. teens naturally react with emotional outburst when they feel they are denied, but at the end of the day when their older they'll look back and realize you did this for them. But for now, taking care of her child is more important than her worrying about emotional outburst and hate. It's called being a loving parent with boundaries.

BUT I find taking away her ability to now get her license is a direct punishment for her honesty. And now her daughter is probably just going to go to her pediatrician and get put on the birth control her pediatrician decides on. So what has this really done except to ruin the mother/daughter flow of communication and trust , and now Mom doesn’t even have a voice and decision about the method of birth control.

The environment that this mum has obviously created... Is amazing. Truly beautiful. I started having sex at 16 (almost 17) and NEVER would of told my parents. I lied for years. But I knew I decided after being with my partner (and current husband) for a year... I decided I wanted to. I didn't want anyone else's opinion besides a healthcare provider and how to go about doing this safely. It can be very lonely to make this grown up decisions so young. So I'm so proud of this mum and how much trust she's obviously built up over her whole life. Fantastic parenting. ❤️

Talking from experience As a girl who had sex since she was 15 and parents pretty much just turned the blind eye and pretty much didn’t want to know what I was doing. Never questioned what I was doing if I was doing it or that I should stop let boyfriend spend the night , my parents drink with me and now as a 35-year-old woman who is incredibly ashamed of everything I did and now wishes I had parent that tried to protect me and show me why it was wrong and how it would affect me later I hope she sees this message Because her daughter is enjoying it now but it’s probably not the man she’s going to marry, and she will always regret it God bless ❤

I disagree. My first boyfriend and sex were at age 15 back in 1986. I asked to be put on birth control because I knew myself. I knew then that I didn't want kids and I maintained that view all of my life. Absolutely disagree with John's moralizing on this one. He is not living in the real world.

My wife and i found out our daughter was pregnant at 15, her life is/was forever altered. We were a religious family and when my daughter asked for birth control at 14 for "acne" i said no- I regret that decision. We did not have a frank talk with bf's parents and found out later that they were allowed to spend time alone- while the parents were home. I assumed they were chaparoned.
