We got to watch it in our class as well. Final year of primary school so our teacher treated us to watching the match. Suffice to say the girls in the class weren’t impressed and were allowed to go home early!😂
Just love that second goal. The brilliant opportunism and blinding skill of Causio, the aniticipation of Benetti who knew exactly where to pick up the ball, brilliant cross and then that fantastic diving header from Bettega. One of my favourite goals.
Italy a class apart. England under Revie were unimaginative, dull and he obviously had instructed his players to stop players like Causio at all costs. England at the time had a wealth of classy, skilful midfielders, wasted under revie.
Italy did not have to "hammer" Bowles, as he was a non-entity for nearly the entire match, though I'd be interested to see some examples of the "hammering" you are referring to. On the contrary, here's the (very real) hammering Graziani received from McFarland, Clement & Greenhoff: 11:05 11:55 15:55 58:00
As a boy of 9 years old I remember seeing the goals on the BBC news and feeling disappointed. I remember Emlyn Hughes who had a fall out with Revie many years later being asked about his memory of this match. He said we got murdered and it could have been a lot more than 2-0. MacFarland was guilty of some very reckless tackling on Graziani and got away with it. No wonder they kicked Keegan black and blue at Wembley. Having watched the game now both sides were guilty of some nasty challenges. In the modern era there would have been many yellow cards for both sides. Who would have thought Italy's No.8 would be England Manager one day?
For me the nadir of England's mid 70s descent into mediocrity. Revie handing out caps like confetti, never identifying a preferred team. Cherry, Greenhough, Mills, Clement...decent professionals but not international ability. A midfield of Brooking, Cherry and Greenhough is basically 2 defenders playing in midfield.
@@anglotim Bell was injured & Hudson disappointed & slightly past his prime. However, *Francis was perfectly alright, already established & had just scored a wonder goal vs QPR.* *Coppell & Hill were also in perfect shape,* if Revie wanted to attack Italy from the flanks. *But Revie saw it fit to keep such talented players waiting,* *while at the same time bemoaning the lack of available talent...* Thus, he thought it wise to field England with *6 defenders,* with *a back four who had never played together before* and *no wingers* to "stretch" the organized Italian defence... After the match, *Facchetti said that was the worst England side he had ever seen,* *disorganized, confused, with only modest ability and - surprisingly for England - little heart for the battle.* Those were Facchetti's exact words.
I remember there was almost a sense of inevitability we'd lose this game, especially after England struggled to win their previous World Cup qualifier at home against Finland. Chants of "What a load of rubbish" were common during England games at Wembley in this era.
The second goal from Bettega showed what people have always known - that when it comes to it, Italy can really play. I remember at the time it won the BBC Overseas Goal of the Year award and Bill Shankly said 'never mind the goal of the season this is the goal of the century.' And some people today want to ban heading!
ENGLAND FOREVER!!! LORENZO DI PORDENONE.
