I love how this movie tries to convince us that the daughter wouldn't know what her dad looked like in high school. The man peaked in high school; you just *know* he's shown his kids his high school yearbook like 50 times.
There’s tons of people with barely any pictures of when their parents were younger. Myself included. I wouldn’t recognize them today even with the few pictures I do have.
As many have stated throughout the comments about never having seen a pic of their dad when younger, you do have a point in the fact that man did peak in high school and was very good looking. There’s no way he ain’t have old pictures up around the house or at least bragged to his kids about his prime with a yearbook in hand or smth lol
Yup. He totally did. And also you know for sure his kids didn’t give a fuck about their boring dad’s past. It’s clear they had zero interest in him in the beginning of the movie, so they would never connect the dots, seeing that photos or not.
17 Again managed to create 2 extremely inappropriate relationship scenarios. An older women getting close to a 17 year old and a daughter have a crush on her father, and yet it’s still a great fill-good movie lol
i think it helps that the dad is VERY UNCOMFORTABLE when he realizes the daughter has a crush on his 17-year-old self, although it's hysterical to me that he is totally unaware of the effect he has as a mature, empathic, good-looking 17-year-old to other girls also that age. maybe that's what makes us root for him too, that he's not taking advantage of the situation in wildly inappropriate ways. another hysterical aspect is how he just _has_ to flirt with his estranged wife while still in his 17-year-old body - like it's sweet that we realize how deeply in love he still is with her and wants to make amends but bruh!!! 😂😂😂
dylan being absolutely terrified of incest before it even happened and slowly getting hysterical the closer it got to becoming incest was the funniest thing
Maybe he got "Back to the future" vibes? Never seen the movies but I heard that the protagonist is travelling to the past and there is some weird love-story(-like thing) between him and his (young adult/teenage) mom (I do not know if he recognizes her immediately or later on). It's huge drama, that you can create easily in such a setting.
@@xionxiv9293 He recognises her inmediatly but she falls for him hard, so he spends the entire movie trying to make his mom fall for his dad so he doesn't dissappear.
"wait wait wait... if he has a teenage daugther... this film is not gonna- do anything- incestuous?" LOVE Dylan always sniffing the bullshit out from a mile away, nothing gets past him
Ive only seen one picture of my dad when he was young and it wasn’t even clear. And I was an adult when I saw that picture. So yeah it’s extremely realistic haha especially if you don’t have a lovey dovey family with pictures everywhere
Reading the original screenplay is a trip. This movie should be an inspiration to any aspiring screenwriter. If that thing could be made into a movie, anything can.
Ok but nobody is talking about how when Zac gets old again at the end.. nobody would ever see this guy again? Nobody would submit a missing persons report? Nobody would think he'd been abducted??
I know this comment is 2 years old but I've thought about this. Like off in the future the son just goes 'whatever happened to Mark,' and his parents get defensive about it and then later on either he or Maggie have a son and the kid grows up to look like 'Mark'(which can happen I know people who are dead ringers for their grandparents), and now the kids think Mark was like Maggie's twin who got given away or something or his parents killed him or something 😆😆😆
I saw the movie ages ago so had forgotten most of it. Seeing it now,how in the hell did the coach, his wife and children NOT recognise him!? Did his kids never see photos of him as a teen? 😂
Yes exactly they have a picture of him in the school and they go to the same school he went to so they didn’t see his name and the wife he drop multiple hints she was like nope not him the coach how could you not remember him he was the best player
I think it could be explained simply by them not expecting it. When we humans do not expect something we oftentimes just oversee it. We don’t notice what we never expect.
Dylan: "Can i just sit safely here without that fear that his daughter is gonna star coming to look at daddy in a new light and then she's gonna star saying daddy a little bit differently. Can i sit here safely??? Is this a safe space???" Me knowing the plot: Sure buddy (ʃƪ¬‿¬)
Then he wouldn't have been there for the pregnancy and formative years. It's not like he's an underprivileged kid and that was the only opportunity he had. He did ok for himself in sales. Look at that house.
I love this movie, but after just watching your commentary I realized if I was the mom I would totally think Zach Enron was my husbands son from someone else, Ned was covering it up and my estranged husband had disappeared rather than own up to having a kid with another woman.
Yeah, plus the fact that nobody else saw it. They live in the same town with all the same people and no family or friends recognize. Even their own kids never saw photos of their dad when he was young? But people still look the same as adults when they were teenager
I couldn't agree more about Leslie Mann and Zac Efron and how they worked so well together. it would be pretty cool to see them in another movie together now that Zac has even more comedies under his belt.
Apparently, Leslie's daughter Maude, who was 10 at the time, had a huge crush on Zac. When word got out that Leslie and Zac had kissed for a scene, Maude licked Leslie's face because she wanted to taste Zac's spit. It's pretty hilarious, in a cute way! 😂🤣
Honestly that's the part of the movie (aside from the daughter hitting on her dad) that should've been the most cringe but somehow they actually made it work. I liked their dynamic a lot.
I'm so happy this video was recommended to me. This guy is so funny and after a few days i've binged like all his videos and his second channel lmao. He's got such good content, I have been missing out. What a cool ass dude.
my story exactly! this was the first video and i’m just like “WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALL MY LIFE?!??? I MISSED OUT FOR THIS LONG AND YOU’VE BEEN HERE SINCE 2017??!😭” glad to be here now though.😅💕 he’s just the best.
This movie proved that Zac could be more than Troy Bolton. The scene where he gives the speech to the health class about safe sex, and later during the court scene, always makes me teary eyed.
It’s so funny to me that Sterling Knight was exactly 20 years old when this movie was released, so his “this looks like a 20 year old with CGI” was not wrong
I read the title and immediately clicked cause I fully agree. I always loved this movie but everyone else either doesn’t think it’s good or hasn’t seen it and I’m confused every time. So I’m glad that hopefully the rest of the troublemakers love this movie!
They should do an aftermath of the movie where the characters cope with being deceived by him: the daughter, distraught, sits in the therapist's chair crying, afraid that she'll accidentally fall in love with her father again. The son is in shambles because it took a major magical event for his dad to finally notice him, and now that his parents are back together, he lost his best friend.
That’s actually depressing now that I think about it and it would’ve been interesting to see that as a sequel or they could’ve showed it at the end of the movie as an epilogue
I feel like Zac Efron is as close to the male equivalent of Megan Fox as we've gotten. He deserve more attention than the superficial appearance stuff he gets.
@@ninjanibba4259 They mean how Megan is a really talented actress but is always overlooked or simplified bc of her looks and hows shes seen as a sex symbol. Zac is also really talented but many underestimate him bc of his looks and superficial stuff
@@ninjanibba4259 how DARE you come for Megan. Hollywood has treated her like trash for years. She's talented and has way more to give and show than Hollywood and directors would let her for YEARS.
This might sound weird considering Dylan is just a RU-vidr who makes movie commentaries, and that does not has to do with any mental health thing, but tbh I couldn’t be more grateful this man is doing this videos. Every time I can’t sleep because of my horrible thoughts, watching this videos calm me a lot. Thank you Dylan for doing what you’re doing, without knowing it, you’re one of the reasons I don’t get anxiety attacks. Thank you.
“If that boy were an Apple, he’d be a Delicious.” Delicious is a type of apple (Red Delicious, Golden Delicious). It does make sense but it doesn’t excuse the trash writing.
"She won't get back with her ex because she's got romantic feelings for her father!" Honestly, I never thought I would hear those words come out of someone's mouth in my lifetime...
Man, I forgot that the reason he lost the scholarship in the beginning is because he decided to raise the kid with his girlfriend. Like man, you gotta give him credit for at least that.
Exactly, like he could've played the game so he could be successful and support his growing family. But he blamed his wife for his decision instead? Trash
@@TheNinjapancake14 not sure about that, he would probably been given the scolarship, which means a few years, while he coulndt have made any earnings and would have probably been away from home, leaving the girlfriend to raise the child alone and without the money to give it the life it desveres. Just thinking, i'm not from the US, so correct me please if i'm wrong. But he could have and probably should have played the game to keep his options open and later decide what to do, mabey together with their parents..
@@ronnitschka College Basketball is a Minimum 3 year commitment now, so you’re not wrong. But back in the 80’s, he could have gone straight to the NBA. So to me, the movie always seemed off for the time it was set in. What I’m saying is, even with the D-League he could have made a good earning in the minors playing basketball and raise his kid. The movie just made him quit right after this game. Which always bugged me
@@m.c.martin he didn’t even need to continue to play bball just get into the school. Or play the game and make the decision later. I understand he’s 17 but he could’ve done something else. They could’ve figured out something better, but that doesn’t make for a good plot
I think him running out during the game was his way of giving up the scholarship. Like I think ur right that he could've waited and not thrown his team under the bus there, but it was symbolic of him choosing a future with Scar over a future in basketball. The problem is, the rest of his life he talked about the "what ifs," and it made Scar feel like he regretted his decision. Therefore, that's why we got to the end and he just did it all over again-- he had to show Scar (& realize himself) that it was the right decision back then & it's still the right decision in present time
a k-drama remade this story and its just sooo enjoyable! its called '18 again'. all the characters are developed. the daughter's character is wayy better there. she's a really strong person who doesn't take shit from anyone. the mom also takes a long time to forgive the dad. also talks about how difficult it is for a divorced woman to navigate life with her kids. anybody who has time should really check it out! its great.
There’s actually a Korean adaptation of this movie, except instead of a movie, it got turned into a series, it dives a bit more into the character building and development, it does still contain a bit of comedy like any other kdrama, but it does get a bit sentimental and emotional at times, a lot more than the Zac Efron version, i recommend watching it (18 Again), you might also recognize some scene similarities
Yes! Wanted to comment this! Plus the sexual/sensual bits that they tried to make funny here are I dunno, subtler?/less pronounced and weird/uncomfortable. They worked around the father/daughter relationship much better there 👍 loved the police station scene, super heartwarming 🥰 Lee Do Hyun’s acting was captivating ☺️
Sterling actually auditioned for Troy Bolton but never got the part then he was trying to go to golf one day and Zack’s car was blocking the way or something and he got really pissed off and had a go at him. Then they ended up working together on this movie and became good friends. Also Sterling played Chad Dylan Cooper who is iconic if you ask me😌 he and Demi Lovato had great chemistry.
I loved how they paid homage to all three "Back to the Future" movies by having Mike's daughter, standing over him while he's knocked out, unaware of who he REALLY is!
I know Sterling Knight from Starstruck, which Dylan may not have watched yet. See, in Starstruck, it is a metaphor of Dylan's story line. Dylan is a RU-vid star instead of a pop star, and he will watch Starstruck in order to understand what his future holds.
has anyone ever pointed out how great of a movie director dylan would be? like he’s chillin with the whole youtube thing, my main source of entertainment, he’s absolutely amazing with what he’s doing. it’s crazy to see his progress over the years, but dude has the potential to go so much farther
I know what you mean. He’s wicked entertaining, but also a down to earth guy who knows his shit when it comes to the technicals of storytelling and moviemaking
his often referenced experience at the defunct college was for film school, i believe, plus he's been in the process of writing a book for several years now and i'm sure he'd direct the movie adaptation of it - if it ever happens. and then it would be really meta if he made a "Commentary on my own movie" video
Same, but I notice he can be misogynistic at times. I'd like to see him more aware of this/have personal growth before directing. Altho I'm sure there are worse people in hollywood as we speak lol
You calling out major plot points ahead of time is the best part of any movie commentary! It's really interesting how your brain makes the connections super quickly..
Narratology, patterns, tropes… don’t know if Dylan knows what he knows, but he definitely knows a lot. He recognises basic plot devices and knows that the plot will demand A, B and C… he doesn’t need to think that much, because his knowledge lets him just recognise things…
@@saorihirai4492 Calm down, please. There are many ways of watching a movie. For example I prefer looking for patterns and tropes, others prefer to sit back and enjoy jokes, moods and other things, then there’s other kinds of watchers. We’re different, you’re not any better than anyone else, and people are here to enjoy these videos. So calm down and let the comment section be a positive space. Basics to some can be hard for others. Common to some can be impressive for others. Remember to be humble. I wish you a good rest of the week.
Dylan looking for a specific line in the script and instead of just using find in page he scrolls and scrolls desperately attempting to find the one line he wants. Now that’s comedy!!
“I don’t like you calling your daughter pretty when you’re in this shape - in this form - can you like not do that? It’s an off limits thing…” “I’m SO disgusted but also so INVESTED.” *all collectively screaming at **30:10* “NO I DON’T WANT ANY GAMES!!” “I have so many conflicting emotions.” I am DEAD 💀Loved this video Dylan - just what I needed today. Hope anyone reading this has a great day :)
I feel like 3:10 was sexual harassment... the daughter is really creepy, and very forceful, even as he clearly refused. She'd make me uncomfortable in real life
@@Rainbow0015 Yeepppppp!!!! God dammit the dude was unconscious and she dragged him to a room and was rubbing his chets while he was blacked out?? WTF?? **Shudders**
This might be my favorite video of yours to date. It was just such a fun watch and I loved how into the movie u were. The complete panic u displayed every time zac and the daughter were in the same room together was hysterical.
Probably because she was in distress. And Zac Efron caught on and pressured her to tell him. And combined with the distress of being a pregnant teen and Zac Efron pressuring her to tell him, she probably just blurted it out without thinking
Director, hesitantly looking at script: "Exactly how much cringe do we want to make the audience feel?" Writer: "Yes." Director: "Just... Yes?" Writer: "I want the audience to Filardi cringe."
Dylan: "hold up he's turning 17 again, they aren't gonna make his daughter fall in love with him because he's Zac Efron and is 17 again right?" Me who has seen the movie before: "oh man you're in for a wild ride"
What's even funnier is that Stan bullied Maggie's brother... but they didn't seem to hate each other??? Like you'd think Maggie would tell him "don't bully my brother"?????? But she didn't care???
I think the idea was that she's so in love with him she's willing to completely overlook his flaws or even make excuses for him, and she probably hates her brother too, there's a bizarre deleted scene that kinda goes into this.
the courtroom scene gets me every time. the way he tries to remain emotionless as though he's just reading someone else's letter but you can just hear that he's getting choked up.
See this movie actually shows the Oedipus complex well, the daughter really liked him because he treated her how a dad teaches their daughters how they should be treated, with respect, so him talking to her like that makes her feel loved and respected how Dad's love their daughter's. No one loves us more than our parents so subconsciously we are searching for that same love. So yes it's creepy but it's also a psychological take (probably done accidentally by these less than poor writers) Edit: I said "no one loves us more than our parents" as a blanket term to use my point I agree not everyone has amazing parents but we grow up either thinking we do or thinking this is the best we are gonna get, I know I have thought that when it came to my parents, but ya, it was just a blanket term to explain how the Oedipus Complex intersects with the movie, I didn't mean to insult or bother anyone by the statement.
“No one loves us more than our parents” unless you had abusive, unsafe parents…then I hope to hell I (we) meet someone who loves us more than them. But really good assessment, I agree with your comment and explaining it that way makes those scenes way less cringy and creepy. You’re 100% right. I’m surprised Dylan didn’t pick up on that or address that.
Don’t agree with "no one loves us more than our parents." Sometimes people have a stronger relationship with friends and lovers than family. Not everyone has an amazing family, a lot of abusive and neglect parents, etc are out there and it happens a lot. Especially dads.
I still don't get why they got a 40 yo actor to play a 34 yo character. I mean, I know they do that kind of thing all the time but I feel like they made Mike and Ned seem reaaaally old, like mid thirties is not that old 🙃
The amount of videos I’ve seen of you doing commentary, and guessing what’s going to happen and usually you’re right lol I vote that you make a movie already.
zac efron is truly one of the best actors of our generation and i wish ppl would stop treating him like just a pretty boy. so many classics under his belt!
@@catrionabruce3 he has a lot of really good films tho especially his last ones like the greatest showman, the ted bundy one, gold, etc. he's proving himself way more now but he still had good movies back then like charlie st cloud, the lucky one, parkland, etc
@@antonella4632 exactly, i just hate that everyone sees him as the pretty boy (this is especially seen when he had that one video where he looked different and everyone started hating him for looking different and i'm like fuck you)
no... maybe if he didn't constantly do brainless comedy movies, but... there's not one movie where he could break the stereotype he build for himself 🤷🏻♂️. there are enough actors that are famous for one (1) series, but could break free from their first characters (because they are actually good). for zac however, his acting is very consistent from his first acting roles to his most recent acting roles - the only thing he ever improved are his muscles and i'm genuinly concerned people think his acting is even close to "one of the best actors".
I remember my dad brought me and my little brother to see this movie when it came out in theaters. We were like seven and five. He had no idea what the premise was, so when Zac Efron's daughter started trying to seduce him, my dad panicked and rushed us out of the theater 😂
I did a little RU-vid detox for the last couple of months. And the only channel I really missed was yours. Oh man, I needed these laughs right now. Thank you.
I actually love this movie (Even though yeah, it gets cringy and weird at times), but I really like the concept of him, having the chance of changing what happened, but ending up doing it all over again, idk ♥
There is a k drama with the same concept but.. lets say its more emotional (I legit cried with some episodes) its named 18 again, I think you will like it also nn
