Hey bud, just to let you know, I used a tamiya line scriber to cut the back out for the fan and it works a lot better and faster, just incase you build another one, give it a try

I am a little curious. I've been watching a few DIY for a spray booth. Some recommended to get the ones that do no produce heat/spark due to the fact that you might be using flammable paint/aerosol. Is the exhaust fan you are using suitable for flammable paints?
Meor Naim Mkz I’ll answer the question for you. No it’s not. Both the fan and the LED light are perfect ignition sources to cause a fire or explosion 💥
@@gregorycafiero9688 there are no fumes. It's water based, non-toxic, paint. You still don't want it in your lungs, but it's not dangerous once it settles somewhere. Which I assume it would in the 'box' behind the fan.
Why didn’t you just use a 5” reducer for the fan? Simple solution to a simple problem. I also put an inline fan halfway through my tubings. I have about 8 feet for the fumes to travel then up to a window, so a fan at the booth and a secondary fan halfway up and I have great pull. All fumes are vented outside.

While effective, this is pretty ghetto phabulous! This is what you get when you don't have the right tools for the job and must MacQyver every last bit. A few things I will say, first, the worry of fire from sparks is way over blown. Farts are flammable too, yet these fans have been sucking farts out for better than a century now. Modern fart fans have little risk of sparking, but if you are concerned, make sure to turn the fan on before you spray, this is the most likely time when a spark would occur. Once running, there is basically zero chance of fire. Second. Not sure if this is just me, but the depth of the booth seems to shallow to be effective at trapping and removing the nasty bit from the air, but I can be certain without more information. Others with more experience can probably speak to this area of the build. Third, as others have mentioned, those nasty screws are a scar away from the ER. Another best practice for mounting to plastic like this, is to provide a wood backer to run the screw into. If done properly, the plastic can be drilled out larger than the screw, as you are clamping the light to the plastic. Think layers, light, plastic, wood. The light to the wood removed any worry of the plastic failing and takes away the scar threat as well. Also, you can easily find proper duct work at home depot for cheap, but effective passage of the air that is "cat proof". Those slinky ducts are prone to claws and failures, where the thin duct is much more resilient. If you go this route, I recommend buying the foil tape as well, makes your build look that much more professional. This stuff sticks and seals like nobodies business, and if I can add a pun, it is flashy as hell! They also make fully articulating elbows that can be set to any angle you need from 1 degree, to 90 degrees and everything in between. So set you angle, tape it, join it, tape it, done. Plus you can create an air register size exhaust that accepts the cheap filters pre cut to fit and you have the added long rectangle port to put through the window, making it much easier to seal, no dirty t-shirt required! So all in all, this is a good reference for your own DIY, booth, but with a little more thought, you can get rid of that ghetto look and feel and create a booth that the manufacturers of the overpriced booths, to green with envy. HTH
Farts are in no way as likely to cause a fire or ignition like Laquer and Enamels will, your advice is horrid and uneducated (They are also not as condensed). The over spray even with a filter can accumulate on the fan motor and if you use a dummy hardware store regular fan and those can and will ignite if they build up. Inside the home it's a fools choice not to use an explosion resistant fan just as an added precaution. You can get away with it for as long as you do until that ONE time and that's all it takes, Murphy has crept in and, well, you can figure out the rest.
@@animalyze7120 wow, you are too stupid to recognize a joke when it literally climbs up you little body, forces open your mouth and farts directly down your throat, maybe even a little bit wet. Again, if you are playing with more than rocks in your head, you will understand that A. most people will turn on the fan BEFORE they start spraying. B. The threat of electrical spark is greatest at start up, once running, if wired correctly, the threat drops to near zero. But just for you, I will add this. If you make your own booth, it would be prudent to have an emergency shut down switch. Second, have a dry chemical fire extinguisher by the door, in the off chance things go tits up. These things would be obvious to most people, but apparently you need to learn, barney style.
Zak use Hot wax on the screws to cover the points of the screws. Also the filter paper I would use 2 or 3 ply's. it wouldn't hurt the more ply. Also if you are spraying Solvent based paints, Don't you think that static given off from the Light would ignite the fumes?
I’m really late to the party but will this set up work good with lacquer paints? I’ve looked at some pre built booths and they usually come with dual filters which seems like it’ll severely limit air flow.
I have one of those collars you put around a cat's neck to keep it from licking it's body. I imagine you could use something like that between the fan and the tubing. The same collar made for a small dog would probably work too.
2:40 a good way to prevent that problem, is choose an exhaust fan which’s diameter is the same than the jeil spiral flexible hose. For example, if you got a 6” hose, pick up a 6” exhaust fan
I love the idea that you had with this. Myself i would have used a deeper tote. Plus i would have mounted the fan on the outside of the tote to have more room inside. How long did the plastic wrap last for you? Also wow on the light. On high i bet that would light up the whole room if all the other lights were off. You have given me some ideas to work with for making one my self.
Very cool video and its something I need to do because airbrushing outside doesn't work worth a damn, and that music makes me want to put a top hat on and swing a cane/walking stick around and do a little dance
rather than that water bottle / plastic bag, why not just take a plastic/Tupperware popcorn bowl, cut the bottom out, affix the hose to the bowl and then bowl to fan, It's shape naturally lends itself into a funnel for the air and I've seen bowls easily reach 200mm radius, That being said kudos for the diy creativity
Do u use this booth? I’m Geting into painting and customs and I just want one that is not gona leave a huge amount smell inside my home. Id pay for a really nice one ( around 1-3k ) if anyone has suggestions
Check out the pinned comment regarding my second attempt at this. It was much better. If you wanna buy one I would not recommend getting one of the ones you can find on Amazon or whatever for around $100-$150 that have the collapsible hood around the fan. I’ve tried a couple and both were way too weak. The only really nice ones I’ve seen available for purchase are from these really small hand-made manufacturers in Japan. They go for around $700 then plus however much in shipping. But a good option if you’re willing to spend a bit for a good quality and fancy looking booth.
WARNING!!! a fan with vent holes in its rear is flash point if solvents are use....result- fire/poss explosio Dont do it unless you only use acrylics/water thimmers
Nice work :) You should stick a piece of paper or something through the whole you fed the pull string through so the string doesn't get torn form the sharp edge over time.
If you want a more sturdy 'connector' from the fan to hose have a look at your supermarket for trifle dishes, the six portion one would probably fit that perfectly! I just bought one of the ones you weren't impressed with today and now I wish id seen this first! Dohh!! Cheers matey.
dunno if you got them there. But you know how you used the knife n heated it? Just go to the dollar store and get a soldering iron. Plug it in and there you go. I have one just for that. Just dont use the one you use on plastic to solder for real. Well unless you can change the tips.
NOT SAFE SUITABLE for solvent based paints or thinners. Very dangerous. You need a squirrel cage blower with about 650cfm to use with solvent based paints/thinners. For acrylics it may not be as bad but alcohol IS FLAMABLE and may be a fire risk. Keep a fire extinguisher handy in any case.
I like this, it's much simpler than my DIY job. I spent way to much time over building mine. Keep it simple, and clean. Good job, boss!! Two questions first, where are you venting that too? I assume out a window. Second are you gonna be spraying a lot lacquer paint? reason being the first set up I used was very similar to yours, and the paper let a lot of paint through and the lacquer ended gumming up the motor, took a while, but something to consider.
fuzzyhawk down Thank you, first! And yes I'll be putting the hose out the window~ And yes, I'll be mostly using lacquer. But aside from the filter paper I'll also be using a larger filter like the cardboard type for Mr.Hobby's spray booth.

Yep you showed him.😂 in made one out of 3.20x30x3/16 foam board sheets hot glue gun to hold it together 6.00 still have to put lights an a fan in but so far think it will work good.
How about just getting an 8"x4" adapter for a bathroom fan from any hardware store cheap EZ and meant to do that exact job compasses used to draw perfect circles are cheap too ill stop there lol

BTW the Mr.Hobby Spray Booth was so useless to me... Stopped working automatically to let cool frequently, really not efficient; as well, the fan wasn’t powerful enough to suck out the dust near it, which made dust often stick on the wet paint surface.
I was wondering about sparks from the cheap fan. I've seen a breeze box fan catch on fire while a mate had a furnace filter on top and he had it in the window garage airbrushing his helmet with lacquer. Solves do burn easy ... just a thought.

Hey thanks for watching! I believe the fan was something like 36W, but I honestly don't remember. Your best bet is to check the box in the video, cause I threw it away! ^^
The audio distorts badly around a minute and forty-five seconds into the video. As far as duck tape goes it comes in many colors down here in the States.

Yes yes and thath was a usefull comments, but i also think that if you use spraybooth like me, few hours a week between work, wife, dog, sport ecc ecc and not like a pro modeler there is no such a danger or maybe just a little, btw i'll try to catch the right fan anyway. :D Pla plating next tutorial? ZakuAurelius I'll look for the video. honestly I thought this rig was impressive for cost efficiency and doing what it needs to do! fortunately, here stateside it's a bit easier to find sturdy components at a much lower price!

Observation: Good concept but a lot of overkill. Your "booth" is too shallow, a deeper storage box wouldve been better.. A 10" personal/desktop box fan wouldve sufficed better w/ the same results. And you wouldnt've needed the duct tubing - place a filter piece in front of the fan and tape a piece on the backside. $40 for the LED bar is too expensive for a DIY project such as this. $3 LED tap lights would give you the same results w/ 2-3 of those. I know this is almost 2 years after the fact but just my observation.
