On this episode of Midwest Whitetail, we follow along with Mike Reed as he closes the chapter on yet another River Farm legend. Going back all the way to 2020, this buck shined as a beautiful main frame 8 with true potential to blow into a monarch. Fast forward all these years later and Mike's plan to hunt the ghostly buck finally came to fruition. Join Mike as he dives into his step by step process for hunting "DK" during the 2023 season dating back to finding the shed antler after a controlled burn in the spring. I live in the west and I can tell you I love mule deer but there’s something so cool about whitetail hunting being able to control the genetics and feed to a curtain point being able to have history with the deer it’s cool stuff

I do need some new waders! I tried to walk out to him in my waders. Water was about 5 feet deep so my short self couldn't make it. Then I had a leak in my waders to boot so I got wet anyway! Thank you!

Congrats Mike on an awesome buck! Did anyone else notice the fresh blood on DK's right antler and the fresh puncture wound in his right ear 28:13. Curious who the fight was with.

Thank you! I first noticed the damage to his ear after we pulled him out of the river and thought he might have done it after I shot him. As you mentioned, you can clearly see it in the video prior to the shot. It was a big flap of skin on that ear. I'm also curious who the fight was with. Maybe moss! Thanks for watching.

Hey there, We can definitely do a stand breakdown there. We actually have done one in the past. If I could find that off season show we could share the link here while waiting to update it. The general idea for the entire river farm is that it is 500+ acres of wetland grass/willow thickets, etc. Very thick at the ground level. The deer head mostly off the farm to the north in the evening to feed in the ag fields and work their way back in the morning. I keep lanes mowed for easy quiet access. We don't typically use lights and we use electric vehicles to get around to minimize ground scent and stay quiet. I can approach the set directly from the east. We rarely ever bump deer going in for the morning hunt which is usually about an hour prior to daylight. Because they typically bed back in the peninsula, I can access from the north in the afternoon and get close to the base of the tree by walking up the slough. I'm not saying we never bump a deer but as you can tell, we can hunt that stand many times and have great hunts. Thanks!

Mike I have to ask...... What are those thingy migigers on your boots. I'm assuming warmers, but what kind what are they called... Im super curious and interested in getting some I have 1200grm Thinsulated Itasca rubber boots and my feet get cold when it's in the low 30,s.... So I need to figure something else out before it starts getting really cold

Go check out Arctic Shield! They have insulated boot covers that make a world of difference on a cold morning in a stand!

Boot insulators from Arctic Shield. Game changer. Those are Rye's feet in the video! I haven't got mine out yet. Arctic shield did a demonstration for us with dry ice on a foot/boot without the insulator and and the other foot with the insulator over the boot. Amazing how well they work. The"score" is just a unit of measurement to give one reference.If you were having a conversation with someone and he said that he shot a 180 class buck you would know that it's a huge buck. All animals killed for food are trophies especially with a bow.
