(1349) CX5 (Formerly Scorpion & Marks) Picked & Gutted

I had no idea the CX5 was still being manufactured, It used to be called the Scorpion and nothing has changed in the overall design other than the new high security pins and countermilled chambers. What a tough little lock! I would NOT hesitate to use these on my front door!

The CX5 is a UL 437 rated pin-tumbler lock made by CX5 Security in South Korea. It uses six pin-tumblers and five springless finger pins which interface with a sidebar. The CX5 is distributed and rebranded by Marks USA in the United States. The CX5 was originally sold by Scorpion and distributed by Can-Am Door Hardware, Inc. It has since been rebranded by Far Pro Security Solutions and sold through CX5 Security of Canada/South Korea.

Easy way to get past the top pins is by reverse picking. Lift all the pins, use heavy tension BOK, then pulse tension until they drop you into the false set. Switch to TOK and set the sliders. Works like a charm on both of my CX5s.

All those odd lock rating system. I liked the way Assa-Abloy used to label their locks: Record pick/bypass time using max 10 pounds of non-power tools. Choose 5, 10 or 15 minutes. As picking improved, locks were downclassed and massive advertisements run to make people upgrade the defeated locks to the better model.

I have a soft spot for Stanley padlocks. Bill, it looks like that would drop right into one, upgrading it's pick resistance quite a bit. Any chance you have a Stanley around that you could try it with? If you're looking for a *great* padlock, pick up a few Stanleys. Not only are they a challenge for beginners to pick, upgrading the core to something more substantial makes them truly great high security padlocks. My collection is up to six of 'em now, and still growing. Edit: Oh, and was there any anti-drill protection in the CX5?

I'm confused, what has been improved? Scorpion CX5 and Marks high security have always been the same. Maybe it seems improved because many of them were keyed incorrectly. If you don't believe me, check my really old Marks high security video. It's exactly the same pins/design as what you have. And yes mine was picked with lots of practice before putting on camera, was not an easy lock to pick.
@bosnianbill
@bosnianbill 5 лет назад
"Improved" removed. Like you, I picked the older Scorpion and Marks but didn't keep them around the shop afterwards. I didn't remember the undercut chambers & thought that the new Korean manufacturer had made that change.

It is a (probably permanent) "singer's rattle" in my voice box that occurs around 4600hz. If you look at the spectrogram of my audio you'll see that there is a blank spot along that frequency where I applied a notch filter. Not perfect, but it seems to work.

I love your videos. Can I make one suggestion? I know little about much and less about making videos. Saying that, I also want to say I am a long term noob.. is it possible to be close in enough with the zoom? to show all the detail of the lock and what your picking hand is doing, but, out just a little further to see your tensioning hand. I am struggling mostly with my tensioning and I watch for the different pressure you use by looking at your fingers. Thank you for hearing me.
@doublejaylar
@doublejaylar 5 лет назад
Unfortunately you aren't going to be able to see the way someone changes their tensioning. It's not something that can be shown or quantified. Every person has to "feel" their own way through learning how to tension properly. The only way to learn it is practice practice practice. Bill has quite a few videos on it, or go here locklab.com/locklab-university/picking-techniques/. Best of luck to you!
@Druid_Plow
@Druid_Plow 5 лет назад
That's also part of the reason Bill puts those marks on the sides of the core, a visual cue to when he is feeling counter rotation and therefore applying less tension.
