You can soak that baby in a vat of apple cider vinegar and water 40/60 for a few days and it will be totally rust free. I've been cleaning tools and engine parts for years with it. Then neutralize the acid with alkaline water/ baking soda, then power wash and wire brush to a fine clean finish. 👌👍
That was really fascinating just seeing how different things were done back then. I couldn't tell but when you showed the crank journals on the block did they have a bearing in there?
Yes, that really thin grey stuff (the chewed up stuff) is the original main bearings. It's poured babbitt, rather than insert bearings. It'll get melted out and re-poured.. if the block is otherwise salvageable.
