Ww2 Fun fact. The primary Innovator behind the chain home system, Robert Watson Watt was born 10 doors up from me, and went to school at the recently demolished school at the bottom of my garden. My primary school, was the high school he attended.

Imagine that. The guy who refused to turn his Nav light off at dusk was the first to be shot down 😃 Risked the mission too. Hopefully a lesson learned there

Gave playing a rest after multiple epic failures taxiing and take off with the Spit, let alone flying the beast without blowing up the engine. 3 weeks later (after being inspired again by GR and some studying of how to do it) I plugged everything in again taxied and took off from Biggin Hill a damn sight better than most of these. Also shot down a JU88 (ok I gave the laser gunners no ammo!), found my home airfield and did a nice landing with 1 gentle bump. I was so elated after my feat that I forgot the basic rule of landing DO NOT BRAKE and promptly broke my prop. But I walked away. Great cinematics on this vid, enjoyed it.

The reason the Mossies had such a hard time is you were not playing the music from 633 Squadron while you flew. Every Mossie pilot knows that, jeeezzz! Also fully expecting the 633 trench run from the Grim Reapers! ;-)

What is the reasoning for having Allied Spitfire and Mustang attacking Allied aircraft? Can't German aircraft, Bf-109 and the Fw-190 A8 and D9 handle it to be more historically accurate?

The naval histories say that in winter the sun never sets in Scapa but makes a complete circuit every 24 hours (well obviously it's 24 hours!). Not sure about March but I think there would not be much darkness available for the attackers.
@andreartymiuk
@andreartymiuk 2 года назад
In Orkney in summer it doesn't get dark.. on the summer solstice Stromness golf club holds a competition that tees off at midnight. In mid-winter the sun rises around 09:30 and sets again around 15:30, so long dark nights, very short days. In March it would be dark by 19:00.

I used to have a computer game by Talonsoft that simulated the Battle of Britain. You could play as the British or the Germans. As the Germans, you had to select targets and plan quite detailed bombing raids. When I played that side, I tried a variety of strategies, like bombing runways, destroying radar facilities, destroying oil refineries, destroying electric power plants, destroying ball bearing factories and destroying dockyards and ship yards. Going after any one of these strategic targets would do critical damage to the RAF, but it was always very difficult to inflict more damage than my forces would suffer in return. What I found worked best was just to conduct massive nighttime terror bombing raids. I'd just pick a city, or in London's case, part of a city, and send half of the Luftwaffe to spend the night firebombing it. I'd just wipe one city after another off the map night after night, no doubt causing enormous numbers civilian casualties while suffering very light losses of my own. Pretty much every time, especially once I'd finish almost completely leveling London, the British would capitulate.

mossies should have been wavetop height and not silhouetted against the sky
@andreartymiuk
@andreartymiuk 2 года назад
I assumed when I built the mission they would come in below 150 ft. The triggers on the ships / island lookout posts would not have fired and reported their position to blue if they were 150ft or below. Was well surprised when they came in high and silhouetted against the sky. The blue cap flights saw them over 30 miles out.

Landed on Kirkwall to dive on the world war 1 wrecks in Scapa flow, the interesting thing is the runway isn't flat, you cant see one end from the other :-)! I'm going to have a Highland Park whilst I watch this :-)! However whilst it's the most Northerly Sotch distilery it's no longer the worlds most northerly distilery - that now belongs to Myken in Norway, Noth of the Arctic Circle! THose bomb loaded takeoffs looked hard, do you know what caused the mossies engines to start smoking on startup - lack of warming up?

@-Zevin-
@-Zevin- 2 года назад
Looked to me like someone not used to multi engine aircraft. I haven't simmed on the Mosquito yet, but you can see similar things happen in other twin engine aircraft, like the BF-110 A-20 etc. You can get massive rotational torque from the engines, as you do in allot of WW2 aircraft, pulling you usually left, depending which way the props spin on the aircraft you are in. With a twin engine you are getting double the torque pushing you left, and rudder won't compensate at low speed. He should have throttled up the left engine only to 80% and the right to 100% this would balance the aircraft out during takeoff. Once in flight you can balance the throttle again, and trim the rudder to compensate slightly. The P-38 is a dream to fly because the props counter rotate, each going the opposite direction. This means it takes off smooth and centered with no input.
@andreartymiuk
@andreartymiuk 2 года назад
I certainly use differential boost to control the mossie low speed yaw before rudder kicks in. Helps also to underrate the take off... use lower power, longer take-of run and hold on the ground to maximise lift off airspeed for greater rudder authority and counter the roll as well.

I was doing some looking about into add on mods for DCS and came across the German navy pack....this gave me an idea for a mission the GR crew could try. You could use the German navy pack to recreate the infamous Channel Dash using the Channel map, German navy pack and any warbirds you want to use!!! What do you think Cap??
